I've heard of a few of them. I've posted some Gorgoroth and Mayhem stuff on the "What are you listening to?" thread. Gaahl was good, but I think I preferred Hat more.

Gorgoroth - (Under) The Pagan Megalith

Wormrot - The Final Insult

Insect Warfare - Disassembler

Iron Maiden

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G90ngH2anxQ

Judas Priest

Rainbow. If you're wondering why this sounds vaguely familiar (other than Ronnie James Dio on vocals), that's Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple on guitar

Ozzie-era Black Sabbath has it's place, but I really enjoy the first album they did with the 3 core musicians (Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler) and Ronnie James Dio on vocals

And I'll throw this in here as well, for any thrash metal fans who wonder where Metallica ripped their sound off from. These guys were playing proto-thrash metal out of Wales. In 1971.

Warp Riders by The Sword. This whole album is perfect, right down to Robert Heinlein Glory Road-style storyline and the sci-fi novel pastiche cover art
