Today, Lizardcube, a studio made up from Omar Cornut (Tearaway, Pixel Junk Shooters) and Ben Fiquet (comic and animation artist) announced a cooperation with DotEmu to develop and publish a remake of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. The game will be released for PC and consoles.
Similar to Monster Boy, which will be a new entry in the series (and which is also inspired the Wonder Boy III), the studio will work together with the series's founder Ryuichi Nishizawa.

Description
A good curse makes a good game (or so they say)! turned into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, a lonesome adventurer is facing the challenge of a lifetime! In search for a cure, our mutated anti-hero will explore the many traps of Monster Land... and defeat many stuff-throwing, curse-wielding dragons. How many more transformations can one hopeful body survive, as it turns into a Lizard, a Mouse, a Piranha, a Lion, and a Hawk... The six different forms of our shape-shifting hero make up the cast of this non-stop action-adventure platformer!

Featuring

  • A huge interconnected world!
  • 6 playable forms for our shape-shifting hero, with different abilities!
  • Dragons of all kinds! A Zombie Dragon! A Mummy Dragon! A Samurai Dragon!
  • An eye-patch wearing shop-keeper pig who may or may not provide a sense of warmth and direction!
  • Beautiful, hand-drawn animated graphics!
  • A memorable soundtrack, based on Shinichi Sakamoto's originals, re-imagined and recorded with classical instruments!
  • ...and more to be announced!

The artstyle looks IMO much nicer than the one from Monster Boy. I hope this turns out to be a good game.

I've played Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV.

The numbering of these games confuses me...

Wonder Boy

Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap

Wonder Boy in Monster World

Monster World IV

The game better have a decent saving system! :P

So this is a sequel or reimagining

There is also a inspiration on the Wonder Boy series as well:

;)

Game Atelier advertised their game Monster Boy more or less as a sequel (without the name, though), whereas Lizardcube's game is a remake/reimagining.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on April 18, publisher DotEmu announced. A PC version will launch via Steam “a few weeks after.”

It's also up on the EU-PSN for preorder. Price: 20 EUR or 16 EUR if you have PS+:

And some cool tidbits about the game itself:

Quote

  • The retro modes are running in widescreen, 60 FPS (constrast to the original Master System version running in 4:3 ratio with a refresh rate of 25 or 30 FPS depending on your console region). So the scrolling and physics are now smoother.
  • The game will accept your original passwords from the Sega Master System and Game Gear versions of the game! So you can effectively load a “save” from decades ago.
  • The game will be able to emit new passwords that will work on the original 1989 and 1991 versions. You can also use those passwords to transfer your game accross any platform the game is targetting.

The thing about the passwords sounds really cool. :o
