Popular Post Superbuu3
Huge thanks to DEMON for providing the banner Anyone who wants to join, you may use the Metal Gear sign up thread here, state which games you want to join. If you want to send an enquiry after that date, send me a PM or use this thread here. Anyone who invades this thread breaking this simple request will likely be added to my ignore list and effectively banned from all future playthroughs, this also includes anyone who puts spoilers in the thread, beyond the point we've played up to. This starts Friday November 11th, if you don't have the game I maybe uploading a full video playthrough of this, if you want to join in on discussion of the game, don't discuss anything beyond the current checkpoint. I have tried to remove every single trace of anything that seemed like it could be a spoiler so don't worry about getting spoilers reading through this post. Before we start: We are not aiming for the platinum, but it requires 5 playthroughs. There is a trophy for not activating alerts, alerts only count if the top right of the screen says alert (disabling enemy radios appears to stop this happening). I would not recommend going for that trophy on a first run unless you have no issues reloading and saving often. After 2 or 3 runs you will have enough dog tags for the stealth suit so this trophy becomes easy. Link to Dog Tag guides: Tanker Plant Guidelines: 1. We only play up to the agreed milestone, I think if we leave people behind the group will fall apart, if people fall behind we will continue, but i do hope he others will try to keep up. 2. If you do meet an agreed story milestone, try to focus on any collectibles. 3. Let us know in the thread if you meet a milestone so we can tell if everything is running smoothly, if you're having trouble with a boss or particular enemies try to ask in the thread first before consulting a guide, this is mainly to keep the talk on the game still open. 4. If you have any suggestions I'm completely open to them. 5. Anyone who wants to join, you may use the General Metal Gear sign up thread here and state which games you are joining. So just update us to let everyone know where you are. If you've played the game before and are going for beating this multiple times feel free to play at any rate you wish. First discussion will be after people have beaten the tanker section. In regards to VR missions playthrough as you please, I'm putting these up for motivation. Checkpoint 1: Beat The First Boss (shake their body after the fight for a dog tag) and Beat 20 VR missions (optional) Checkpoint 2: Beat The Tanker Section and Beat 40 VR Missions (optional) Checkpoint 3: Meet Pliskin and Beat 60 VR Missions (optional) Checkpoint 4: Defeat the first Dead Cell member and Beat 80 VR Missions (optional) Checkpoint 5: Find Ames and Beat 100 VR Missions (optional) Checkpoint 6: Find the President and Beat 120 VR Missions (optional) Checkpoint 7: Complete the Sniping Section and 140 VR Missions (optional) Superbuu3's tips and tricks: I recommend looking at the mini tutorials in the game to better understand the controls there are a lot of advanced moves. For the platinum you will need to play through on 5 different difficulties and obtain all dog tags (you can miss a couple i think, but try to obtain all on lower difficulties) In this game pistols shoot by holding the square button to aim and then releasing to fire. Automatic weapons fire on pressing square firmly and aim by touching lightly. To hold up an enemy aim at the enemy when they dont see you (best done from behind or the side, possible from the front but not recommended). To obtain dog tags from enemies hold them up then aim your gun at them from the front pointing at the head. To move with a pistol while holding down the Square button also hold the X button and you can run with your pistol out. If an enemy is not scared of you use the socom to shoot past his head or just shoot his arm or leg and he will change his attitude. Shooting an enemy in the arm will stop him using his two handed weapon (some have pistols), shooting in the leg will cause them to no longer run, shooting there radio (a box located above the right butt cheek) will stop them calling for help via the radio theres also a trophy for shooting ten of these. The environment can be used to your advantage shooting pipes can release steam to kill enemies. Shooting fire extinguishers wil release a smoke cloud to disorientate enemies and give you some cover (combined with thermal goggles this can be very effective). Shake enemy boss bodies if they are still around after defeating the boss they will drop dog tags. You can do chin ups when hanging off a ledge with L2 and R2 together, this will increase your grip strength which will be needed to obtain a trophy in the last section of the tanker (completely optional if you can be bothered). freddie1989
Nice work Buu, I will be cracking on with this as soon as I have done the online for Arkham Origins due to them shutting the servers down soon.
FFHannibal
I was hoping to play a little bit tonight, but I forgot I hadn't installed the HD collection already and it went from 4 minutes left to 15, which it has been stuck on for the past 30 minutes. So I guess I'll just let it install, but I probably won't be playing tonight. I think my very first time playing MGS should deserve me not being tired (and able to play at least more than an hour). I'm also going to be watching all the cutscenes, so it'll take me more than an hour to get to the first checkpoint.

AffectatiousDonk
Holy cutscenes Batman, not sure if I'm playing a game or a movie. First boss down, just getting a hangs of controls, not just realised R1 takes you to first person view
FFHannibal
Those cutscenes really are the bee's knees, wow. Even before the game really started I was staring at my screen in what I can only describe as awe. Being new to the series, I kinda felt MGS was blown way out of proportion and it seriously couldn't be that great as a franchise, but boy was I wrong. The music, the scenes, the names on the screen, it really felt like the intro to a movie and that's before actually starting the game My only complaint is the 'grainy' footage, but that was kinda expected. I left all the options completely the same and contemplated briefly if I should read up on the general story , but I decided not to (aside from that one article with its 9 or so pages I think). I was kinda worried about not being able to follow the story, the characters, etc. but so far it's going really well. It took a few, no a lot of, cutscenes before I could actually play and it didn't really help that the 'tutorial' was shown before those scenes. I'm going to stop here, because I feel like I could wax poetic about this game for a long while. But a game that can have me dying on the first boss like 6 times before I finally figure out how to properly shoot and not have me putting it down immediately is quite something (it might even be ).
AffectatiousDonk
. But a game that can have me dying on the first boss like 6 times before I finally figure out how to properly shoot and not have me putting it down immediately is quite something (it might even be ). I spent 20 minutes in a highly intense battle with the fire extinguisher, neither of us prepared to give ground. Everytime I tried to shoot it, it would artfully dodge out of the line of fire. Discovering the first person aim mode after being blown up by those lasers in frustration 5 times was truly a game defining moment. The first boss has nothing on that fire extinguisher.

You have no idea how accurate that description is. Played through the Tanker, just over 1hr to complete the level and I think I got all the dogtags. Grinding grip out is a bit of a bore but very helpful Will try out a couple of VR missions to keep me fresh.

Discovering the first person aim mode after being blown up by those lasers in frustration 5 times was truly a game defining moment. The first boss has nothing on that fire extinguisher. Surprisingly I managed to hit the fire extinguisher fairly quick, but then I just walked straight into the lasers and triggered the bombs for no reason at all . I also keep crouching and lying down for no apparent reason, it really is quite amusing. I'll be trying to complete the Tanker tomorrow and hoping that I've miraculously gotten skilled by then. Superbuu3
You'll be glad to know the controls in all the other games are a lot less convoluted, although there's hundreds of more interactions in the later games. The version of MGS 3: Snake Eater in the HD collection had a movable camera put in, although I don't know if its the default option, but theres an option to change it to movable. It definitely is a testament to how intersting the game is that the overly complex buttons you eventually jut deal with it because you're enjoying the game too much. I still find it hilarious how complex it is to jump out of cover, while pressed to a wall to turn around and aim in first person, which I think needs at least 3 or 4 buttons pressed. Remember if anything is confusing you do feel free to ask about it, I haven't posted much, but I am keeping an eye on the thread.

Psy-Tychist
How is everyone doing on the game so far? I'm about 18% on the VR missions for one character so far, has anyone tried the missions yet?
angelgrievous
I didn't sign up for the we play but I am playing it right now. I'm playing on hard and trying to get all of the Dog Tags. The controls do taking some getting used to. Just keep at it. I've done a couple of VR missions but I'm OC about getting the best score and so I'm stuck on like the 4th or 5th one in stealth. I'll be playing along with you guys for another playthrough at least. I'm about to boot it up now, maybe I'll try to not be so obsessive over the VR. Superbuu3
How is everyone doing on the game so far? I'm about 18% on the VR missions for one character so far, has anyone tried the missions yet? I haven't done the VR missions from scratch, but I was already a decent amount in I think I know on the two initial characters getting 1st place ranks was relatively easy. For me the Tanker stage itself doesn't take long as I used to play the crap out of it, I think I left off in the hold, but I was waiting on people to actually let me know when they finished the tanker so I can watch the cutscenes and come up with some decent discussion. I do love how awesome the cutscenes are in this as they really don't get old no matter how many times I have seen them.
Psy-Tychist
I do love the cutscenes, especially later on with the Codec moments... I played the hell out of it on PS2, got to Extreme mode but Fortune is a pain in the ass. But, I'm getting ahead of myself a bit.

I didn't play on extreme on PS2 as I couldn't do the bits you need to rapidly press a button. I'll see if I bother on this version.
FFHannibal
I've just completed the Tanker bit. I also did some VR missions, but only like 3%? I'll keep my thoughts about the first bit for another post, when more people have cleared it, wouldn't want to spoil anyone.

Superbuu3
Did you have another checkpoint in mind Buu? I think its time we just did one as a lot of people aren't responding. I'm not sure how long that is into the plant but i'm pretty sure thats before any boss fights. However there is a crapload of cutscenes before that point. Checkpoint 3: Meet Pliskin and Beat 60 VR Missions (optional) Discussion points for checkpoints 1 and 2 should be up hopefully by tomorrow. AffectatiousDonk
New checkpoint sounds good. I am just near the end of the tanker section. I haven't done any VR missions yet but will try some this afternoon. I'm playing on Very Easy so only problems so far have been getting use to the controls. The online on Arkham Origins is more of a pain in the arse than I predicted but as soon as that is done I will be on this. Good to see people enjoying it, I can't wait to visit this series again. Melanogaster1987
Sorry for waiting so long before starting - I quickly ran through the tanker last night; Checkpoints 1 and 2 completed for me. I don't think I'll bother with the VR missions yet, though. Edited November 19, 2016 by Melanogaster1987
