Popular Post xFalionx
We've moved to a new thread. Pretend this one doesn't exist and go there instead. Monthly Madness - A fun way to passively purge your backlog! This month's theme: Earth Hardcore requirement: at least partial underground/cave setting Allowed are all games that have a strong relation to the element earth. This could be the name of the game, the setting, a gameplay feature, or something else entirely. While this is only partially subject to interpretation, participants should provide information about what part of the game relates to the element. Very small relations like "The game is set on a planet made out of earth" will not count towards this theme as the element has to be strongly reflected by the game. Example: Minecraft Next month's theme: Random Spoiler: Suggestions and explanations for next month's theme. Spoiler Explanation Each participant may suggest a single theme for the next month. On the 15th of May all theme suggestions will be put into a list and four themes will be randomly selected using a tool like Random.org. Participants can increase the chances of a theme getting picked by suggesting the same theme as someone else. These four themes will then be put into a poll until the end of the month to decide a final theme for June. Rules All of these rules are defined loosely and are to be treated as principles to follow when suggesting a topic. Should your theme deviate from these principles in a large degree, I may request you to vary your theme or suggest a new one entirely, so try to follow them. Themes should... Have a large selection of games.Example: If you wanted to suggest "Zelda games" as a theme, you would have to change that to "Nintendo games" instead because a single franchise doesn't have enough games to be a full blown theme. Be accessible to anyone who has at least one Sony console. If your theme does not include any games on the PS3, PS4 and/or PSVita, there is a high chance that some people who only have these systems will be left out. Anyone who owns at least one of these three systems should be able to play at least some of the games in your theme. Not be too hard to accomplish.Having a theme like "Ultra Rare platinum trophies" would take away the fun of this easy-going event. Include a HC theme that is harder to achieve than the usual theme but not near impossible.I might end up altering your HC theme to achieve a good balance. As long as you follow these principles, your suggestion should be fine. Current suggestions Games with knights and/or dragons (HC: both knights and dragons in the same game) (1 user) Games that offer the use of companions (HC: animal companion(s)) (1 user) Games with (un)dead beings (HC: player character is an (un)dead being) (1 user) Games that you have picked up for less than 10$ (or the equivalent of your local currency) (HC: less than 3$ but not for free/through ps+) (1 user) Games with really short names (1 word or less disregarding "the", "a", or similar words) (HC: only 1 word and not more than 6 letters not disregarding the words mentioned before) (1 user) Games based on something that has already been or could in the future be shown on TV (HC: games based on live action) (1 user) Games with awesome soundtracks (HC: no AAA games) (1 user) This event is supposed to spice up your game selection by providing a certain theme for each month of the coming year 2017. Participants will receive grades for each month depending on their completion of a game that fit's that months theme. Themes could reach from something simple like "2D games" to abstract like "rain" and will be decided on via polls. For now everyone will be able to vote in the poll but depending on the opinion of the participants I might change this in the future to counting only participants' votes. The way it is now will certainly guarantee more interesting themes to be picked and after all this event is about creating a diverse selection of games to play. In addition to the grades, there will be special challenges that can be completed for bragging rights. These challenges can be completed at any time and require a gold grade. While this isn't required, participants are highly encouraged to post their thoughts about the games they play, or discuss them with others. There will be grades for each month ranging from to , and they will be shown in a list for each participant in the main post. The grades are rewarded for the following criteria: - No grade: Participant signed up after this month was already over. - Bronze: Awarded for participating in the event. - Silver: Awarded for finishing the story of a game that fits the theme of the month. - Gold: Awarded for 100% completing a title without platinum trophy that fit's the theme of the month. - Platinum: Awarded for earning the Platinum trophy of a game that fit's the theme of the month. Participants that earn more than one platinum trophy that fits the theme of the month will get a platinum star for each additional platinum trophy earned in that month. Participants that earn more than one gold grade, or already have a platinum grade will get a golden star for each additional 100% completed theme-fitting non-platinum game finished that month. Challenges only have the platinum grade. If you complete a challenge, you will receive the grade for that challenge. As with the monthly grades, participants may earn additional golden stars for their challenge grade by completing the challenge multiple times. Episodic titles without a platinum trophy will be treated specially: - Silver: Awarded for finishing every episode on your profile. - Gold: Awarded for 100% completing every episode on your profile. - Platinum: Awarded for 100% completing every episode of the title. Participants are free to choose 2 monthly themes to skip whenever they like to. In those months ranks can also be awarded by completing games that don't fit the theme of that month, but will be marked accordingly. This should be used if a participant has no games in their backlog that fit the theme of a month. Ranks unlocked by using a skip won't count towards challenges or stars. I was originally thinking about creating nice trophy cards at the end of the year, containing statistical information along with all of each participants earned badges. Since I don't have enough time for that, I changed this to a simple list. Depending on the amount of participants and the amount of free time that I'll have in the coming year, I might do this anyways but don't take it for granted. There is no limit to participants. Grades will only be rewarded when a participant posts about the completion of a relevant game in this thread. All kinds of games are allowed, no matter what console (PC/mobile included) they are on or what age they are from. Participants are required to be honest about their completion since the completion of trophyless games can't be tracked. Instant completion of a game by cross-saving or other means is not allowed and will prevent the game from counting towards your rank. Hacking or the use of other means to gain an unfair advantage over others will result in the same punishment as rule 5. Games of any completion percentage are allowed, an exception to this would be games with only one trophy left for a different event. (See rule 8) Participants can request a platinum rank for a trophy list that has only one missing trophy (or more that are stackable) before the platinum trophy, if they're participating in a time sensitive event like the Platinum Rain Day. I reserve the right to change these rules at any time, should the circumstances call for it. If you feel like I missed anything, feel free to point it out. I'm always open to suggestions. Monthly Themes Spoiler January - Perspective - 3D Games February - Consoles - PS4 Games March - Random - Artistic Games April - Naming - Long Names May - Elements June - Random July - Time August - Place September - Random October - Halloween November - Advancement December - Christmas Challenges (All games completed for these must fit the monthly theme) Spoiler Complete a retro game. (Anything released before or within 2005 will be eligible as well as any kind of remake/-master or rerelease of those games) Complete a game that counts towards a different PSNP event. Complete 4 games within one month. Complete a game because of the event, that you would not have played anytime soon otherwise. Complete a game that fulfills the Hardcore requirement of that month. Complete all currently released DLC of a game (games only count once, even if more DLC is released throughout the event). I may or may not add a few more challenges during the course of the year, depending on user feedback and the rate of achievement of these challenges. To sign up, you simply have to post in this thread saying so. Once you're signed up, you'll need to provide the following stats before you start gaming in January: Current number of achieved platinum trophies Current number of 100% completed titles without a platinum trophy ^(NOT PSNP's "Completed Games" stat. Count every game that's ticked off () in your profile. Current completion percentage These will be used to display the progress you made during the event. After you've posted these stats, you're free to play anything you like or earn some monthly ranks by playing something relevant to the theme of the month. Make sure to post updates in the thread whenever you feel like there's something you accomplished and make sure to update your PSNP trophy list at the end of every month so I can confirm your progress. I'll be posting an announcement at the start of every new month. You have 24 hours after that post has been made, to finish any relevant games and post an update about them in the thread to receive the corresponding trophy rank. You can sign up at any time of the year. If you want to sign up after the start of the event, you'll have to include the stats from above in your post. You'll get the bronze rank for the month you joined in, which means that all participants joining in January will still be able to earn all of January's ranks if they want to. I wanted to post this for quite a while, but the last few days were pretty stressful. The event might feel a bit rushed due to that. If you have any suggestions for this event or future iterations of it, be sure to tell me about them. I appreciate any and all feedback I get. If there's any more questions, be sure to ask them and I'll answer them and add them to the FAQ if they feel important enough. Also, if you're wondering why the thread started a bit weird, it's because I posted it by accident before I was done. I blame the new editor. FAQ Spoiler Q: Can I earn a platinum rank for a game that I played on a non-Sony console? A: In certain cases, yes. A platinum rank can be awarded for games that have a platinum trophy but are played on a different platform. This requires the other platform to have the same achievement list as PSN. In case a game has a set of achievements different to the PSN trophies, or features no trophies at all on Sony consoles but does on another platform, usually a gold rank will be given out upon 100% completion. Exceptions can be made if a set of achievements proves to be hard or time intensive enough that it would get a platinum trophy, would it ever be released on Sony consoles. In these cases, ask about it in the thread. Q: What titles are eligible for the challenge that requires retro games to be played? A: Any software originally released before the start of 2006 and any form of remake, remaster or port of this software is eligible for this challenge. -Active- BillyHorrible Spoiler Monthly ranks: January - Perspective - 3D Games February - Consoles - PS4 Games March - Random - Artistic Games April - Naming - Long Names May - Elements - Earth June - Random July - Time August - Place September - Random October - Halloween November - Advancement December - Christmas Challenge ranks: Complete a retro game. I've signed up for some other backlog events in the past but those didn't really help (), maybe this one will . 8 minutes ago, Edunstar84 said: Count me in as well! I need a new incentive to finish more games. It's great to see some interest even before the event is properly introduced. It might help you but at the very least it should provide you with some more diversity. 6 minutes ago, DetectiveCJ said: I'm interested in this but won't sign up until I get more information about the themes. None of the themes that I've planned are really gonna be about the difficulty of a game or it's plat, so I don't think you'd have to worry about that. More information will be following soon, due to my silly mistake.
ladynadiad
Can you give some idea of what themes will be? I'm not so concerned about difficulty, but more if themes will actually fit games I would have any interest in playing. Also a question related to one of the rules. You are saying we can play from any "console", I'm guessing first off that will also include PC and mobile. But the actual question is, are all other platforms going to be unable to get a platinum grade in a theme even if they have the same achievements as the PSN trophy set that does include a platinum? Like to give an example, let's say the theme is something like mystery type games and I decide to play Murdered: Soul Suspect which would fit it. I own that on Steam so I can't get a platinum trophy, but the achievement set on Steam is the same as PSN and a 100% on Steam would be the same as earning a platinum on PSN. It could be verified with me linking my achievement page from Steam. Or if I played a game on Xbox Live my 100% could be verified from xbox.com. I'm asking this because my PSN backlog is growing smaller, but my Steam and Xbox 360 backlogs are huge and I'd love an event that will include them, but not if it means I put myself at a disadvantage because I opted to buy a game on Steam or Xbox for various reasons, and in some cases long before I owned my PS3 and Vita.

I'm trying to keep the game themes broad enough to allow some free room. Then again, encouraging people to try something they wouldn't have otherwise is one of the goals I had in mind when planning this event. As far as the general idea of the themes will be, each month is gonna have a major theme, of which there'll be smaller themes to vote for. An example would be January's major theme of "Perspective", of which people will be able to vote for the minor themes "3D Games", "2D Games" and "2.5D Games". I'll list those major themes in the OP, once I get the chance to actually finish the damn thing. There'll also be a few months where I ask all participants for theme suggestions, of which one will be picked at the end of the month using a random generator. Thanks for bringing that up. Of course, if the achievement list of the game is the same as the one on PSN and you can provide proof of completing all achievements that would be necessary to earn the platinum trophy on Sony consoles, you would be able to earn the platinum rank. And yes, consoles include PC and mobile. But yeah, I know the problem. Before I got into Sony consoles again, I amassed quite a few unplayed steam games. I'm gonna continue finishing the OP now. ladynadiad
Cool, then sign me on up. Always can use some excuse to also work on the 360 and Steam backlogs. Though who am I kidding, Steam's backlog is so never going away, but I have quite a few games there that also exist on PSN with the same achievement sets and could always use an excuse to play those instead of the easy 100%s I typically go for.
SyIaris
I'd like to join in as well, please. Sounds interesting. I'll be curious to see what sort of games I wind up with... Steam bundle junk/extras may be my only possible option for some of those, depending on the specifics. Plats: 48 100%: 80 Completion: TBA How do ports/remasters work for the "retro" bit? Not that it particularly matters since it's a side thing, just curious. Also, since I was bored, is this kind of what you were after? It's a little messy, I didn't bother trying to get everything exact or make a good background. Edited December 22, 2016 by SyIaris

xFalionx
I think I'm pretty much done with the OP now. I hope I didn't leave out anything important since I'm pretty tired. Don't forget to vote, people. 35 minutes ago, SyIaris said: I'd like to join in as well, please. Sounds interesting. I'll be curious to see what sort of games I wind up with... And yeah, that's sort of what I had in mind, maybe a little different and smaller, so you could have it in your sig as more of a side-thing. Along with a larger version for profiles. I might do that after all but I'm not guaranteeing anything since I'm relatively short on time. Also, I've added a bit of text to clarify that remaster question. Basically: If the original game has been published before 2006, it's gonna be fine, no matter if it's a remake or a port. You should reread the OP before I sign you up. It's pretty much done now, sow there's some new information you might want to know about before signing up. I ran out of likes as well, so don't be disappointed if you didn't receive a like yet, I still love your posts. @Lucas @Edunstar84 @DetectiveCJ @Pixel-CAT- @ladynadiad

They both say 2D right now. Looks pretty fun, I'm not going to sign up however, as I will almost certainly wander off mentally at some point and forget about the whole thing. Hope you get a good turn out though.

I knew there was bound to be some mistakes when tiredness and copy+paste meet each other. Fixed. Yeah, I guess something passive isn't really perfect for everyone. I personally prefer the slow pace to the pretty fast pace of regular events but I think the monthly themes will spice things up enough so it won't feel too boring. Fitzquaid
Sign me up, please - this seems like a fun, chill event and I definitely want to make progress with my backlog next year. I'll post stats closer to the end of the month.
Lucas
@xFalionx Added my stats to my original post as well. That's all, right? About completing PC games, do they count for a gold grade or a platinum grade once you've got all achievements from a PC exclusive (like Undertale)?

Undertale is probably a poor example there since it lacks achievements on PC so there wouldn't be something to verify that you did 100% the game, unless it has in game achievements? I doubt it though because the dev was very against the idea of giving the game any sort of achievements. For a better example, I'd go with something like Final Fantasy IX. That's one that exists on a bunch of platforms, but only on PC and mobile does it have achievements. I'd use that one because it's a long enough game with a large enough achievement set that if that version came to PSN it would certainly have a platinum. Or if you really want to do a better example where the game even has an achievement for earning all other achievements like a platinum, Final Fantasy IV is a good one.
xFalionx
@ladynadiad @Pixel-CAT- @Fitzquaid @Lucas @Enma8910 I signed you up. Make sure to check your stats at the start of January to make sure they are still up to date, and don't forget to post them if you didn't already. 3 hours ago, Lucas said: @xFalionx Added my stats to my original post as well. That's all, right? About completing PC games, do they count for a gold grade or a platinum grade once you've got all achievements from a PC exclusive (like Undertale)? Yep, that's everything for now. Honestly, I would love to award platinum grade ranks for games that have no platinum due to platform exclusivity, but I feel like it wouldn't be fair since I don't really have any good criteria to determine which games would deserve that. That's why in most cases I will reward gold ranks for 100% completed games which are exclusive to a non-Sony platform. I might make exceptions to this on a case by case basis, if the achievements are clearly hard enough to deserve a plat on PSN. I guess in those cases you should ask beforehand. I think I should elaborate on that in the FAQ section, when I get around to that. I will still, however, reward platinum ranks for games that are played on a different platform, but have a platinum trophy with the same set of achievements on PSN. 7 hours ago, Edunstar84 said: Unfortunately, I don't own any 2D or 2.5D games, so my vote went to 3D. Do you really not have a single 2D game? Pretty much every second Indie game is a 2D game, as well as some others. If you're subscribed to PS+, in November there were the 2D game Letter Quest and the 2.5D game Pumped BMX + in the instant game collection. Anyways, I was thinking about giving everyone the chance to skip one or two themes in case you don't own any fitting games. You'd get to earn the same ranks marked with a little J or something like that by playing a different game for those months. I'll add that to the OP later, since it's probably a good idea. Also, can I take your post as a confirmation that you'd still like to join, now that the OP has been updated? Actually, posting your stats at the end of the year is pretty much what I had in mind for the same reason. Posting them now is not required. I guess most people on here seem to have PS+, that's why I was figuring you might have it as well. Right now the scale is tipped towards 3D games anyways. Hemiak
Ah screw it. Go ahead and sign me up. It's not like I'll get hunted down by wild dogs if I fail the challenge. I had a question about Consoles for month 2 however. What exactly does that mean? Because none of the things I can think of make a lot of sense to me. I have 106 plats and that won't change before the year end. I'll update the rest later.
