Any tips for races and car combat challenges?

I still have 12 conveys lefts and have yet to do any races not story related. but not sure where to start

where/how do you obtain the cars for the challenges?

Unfortunately I’m a getting burned out of this game, so I want to have a plan to knock these remaining trophies/challenges as soon as possible

I did all of the races and it was a waste of time. I think it’s better to save them for last (when you have all of the Archangels unlocked)

it’s lame that some of the archangels (half of them) won’t unlock until you reduce the threat to 0

I think the ‘cars section’ of the roadmap should go this:

- do the conveys and make sure to get the hard challenges before finishing all of the conveys (the spike kills for example)

- now that all Archangels are unlocked, do the races and get legendary time

- do the cars specific challenges, these are easy and won’t take long

Just to clarify, clearing all convoys unlocks all Archangels?

The Archangels are just the Magnum Opus with specific upgrades equipped in the garage. To unlock all the parts in the garage for the Archangels you need to:

reduce the threat level in Jeet's and Pink Eye's territory to 0,

reduce the threat level in Gutgash's territory to 1,

beat all Top Dog camps to get the paint colors,

and find the other car body types other than your own at specific scavenging locations.

After all the parts are unlocked you still need to buy most of them with scrap to use them. Also some upgrades are locked until you complete certain Story missions and maybe Wasteland missions so you should wait til you get those done first before bothering with the Archangels besides the ones needed for the story.

I recommend leaving at least 1 convoy in Gutgash's territory because if you don't destroy the lead truck you can fast travel to any nearby point which re-spawns any escort cars that were destroyed and you can use them to farm any vehicle kill challenge that doesn't need Buzzard or Roadkill vehicles.

I knew this much, but the way TalalHmd phrased his post made it sound like you unlock all that is needed to build the Archangels just from doing the convoys, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious.

I've gotten almost all Car Combat challenges except the specific vehicle/Archangels ones and the "Kill X amount of Roadkill/Buzzards". Any recommendations for these?

The Death Races are solely populated by Roadkill vehicles to farm.

As for the Buzzard kills:

The two Buzzard vehicles are Charbones if you also need that challenge.

As for specific Archangel kills if you unlock the vehicle that needs to be destroyed by completing its death race you can drive it out of a stronghold, use the flare to call your Archangel and get the kill that way.

Also us his video for the Righteous Spike Archangel challenge

Save at least one convoy in Gutgash’s territory to grind away at the 100 Scrotus kills.

To future players, I’d highly recommend building the Jugger of Virtue whenever possible. That vehicle has three challenges associated with it for killing 15 buzzards, 15 roadkill, and 15 scrotus. No big deal, right? BUT, once you complete those, it unlocks three more challenges requiring 30 buzz kills, and 100 kills for roadkill AND 100 scrotus. I did unnecessary hours of grinding to complete these tasks. If I had unlocked those challenges earlier in the game, I would have knocked them out through natural progression. But by saving all Archangel challenges until the end, it added a couple hours on my 70-hour platinum run.
Hope this helps - have fun with the game!

I only did the 15 kills challenges for that archangel and can't remember having ones of 30/100/100 for a specific archangel. I think the new ones are repeatable ones(?) and those are not needed for the trophy. I had quite a few repeatable challenges left at 'completed 0 time' when I got the trophy.

The buzzard kills can be farmed easily as in the video above. Roadkill in the races. Scrotus: There's a respawning vehicle in the east of deep friah, right next to the tunnel towards the desert. Also has a respawning sniper.

The 30 buzz kills, 100 Scrotus kills, and 100 Roadkill kills are repeatable challenges and just like any other challenge that is labeled with 'completed X times' are unneeded for the platinum. When you said you did unnecessary hours of grinding to complete them you were right as they weren't actually needed.

An alternate way to get cars for challenges is to jack them GTA style and take them back to a stronghold. Before I realized you could win cars via races I would get in every vehicle I came across. If it's a vehicle you don't have, it will tell you, and you can drive it back and it will be added to your garage for selection.

sorry for the confusion, I've cleared everything except for the conveys, that's why I said 'clear all of the conveys to unlock every Archangels' so it's not just the conveys, you have to reduce the threat to unlock everything

I had a little bit of a scare last night. So I read up that patch 1.05 made the platinum unobtainable by not allowing you to start up certain death runs. I'm more than halfway done with the game so I thought that I would have to start all over again by reinstalling the game. Turns out that patch 1.06 fixed that issue. Thank God!

There are just so many Archangel and Death Run related challenges, and I really hate skill/time based stuff they throw in every game. Does anyone have a strategy to share to minimize the number of races I gotta do (given that I win them of course)? If I do one race per location, per archangel, with legendary time and make sure to destroy at least one vehicle in each, I should be covered, correct? Obviously if I don't earn legendary token or lose I'd have to grind it out, but under perfect circumstances would this be all I gotta do - 16 perfect races?

Don’t sweat the Death Runs. The legendary times are very manageable.  Most Archangels don’t get unlocked until late in the game, so that’s why most people do those at the end of their plat run. If you are having problems with any of them, just thunderpoon your opposition once the race stars and you’ll have smooth sailing.

Thanks! I completed most of the game now, so I think I'm gonna work on those races tonight and try to get majority of them out of the way.

Also, if you lose track of what needs to be done, if you look under “Collectibles” and check out the vehicles section, when you highlight each car, if will tell you if that vehicle has a legendary time.

Thank you! I was just pondering about ways to track it properly. I even made a little chart on paper to assist me. The collectables trick will come in handy. I actually just finished three races and had fun. They are pretty short and sweet, which was welcome in my books.

For anyone who is just starting up, read below:

  • Most of the car combat challenges can be done on convoys, make sure to keep a few alive, easy ones are the two convoys at the Reek Hills region and Grit Canyon region of Gutgash's territory, the route is simple, with not many turns and twists, also easy to snipe for challenges like "Rule of the Day" at the Grit Canyon convoy. When chasing the convoys, make sure to leave alone the main vehicle. These convoys are also easy to get the boarders kills.
  • There is one challenge that requires you to take down a Sideblender with a Sideblender, I recommend you do that in a death race, those cars are not very common.
  • Every vehicle combat challenge with an enemy vehicle has an alternative vehicle to use, mainly because there are three factions in the game, the War Boys (there is a subgroup of this, Stank Gum's Legion), the Roadkills, and the Buzzards, and all of these have their own vehicle types which do the same thing, like Charbone for Buzzard and Flamergamer for Roadkills serve the same purpose, you find one of these, you are good to go for the challenge. So don't enter death races just to unlock those cars, you'll find ample while free-roaming, if the car is not in your collection, you board it and the game will prompt you to take it to a stronghold, it will not if it is already added to your collection.
  • There is one challenge, "Gum Shoe" that requires you to take down a vehicle from Stank Gum Legion with a specific archangel, these vehicles are colourful and can only be found in Deep Friah's territory. Although, I did find some of these cars roaming when I visited the territory after zeroing out the threat, however, some players have reported to have not encountered one after the threat has been reduced to zero. I am not sure what could be the reason behind this inconsistency in spawning but it is highly recommended you complete the challenge before eliminating the threat in this region.
  • Any challenge requiring you to destroy vehicles of any type or of a particular faction, it can be done easily if you have already added any unarmoured vehicle of that faction into your collection, spawn it outside Jeet's stronghold, drive it straight from the stronghold entrance to jump off from the broken arch/bridge to lose some of the life of the vehicle and then call for your archangel or the Magnum Opus to destroy it swiftly. However, challenges requiring you to grind another vehicle to its destruction or side ram another vehicle is advisable to be done on Convoys, these are easy on moving vehicles than on stationery ones.
  • Lastly, don't focus on repeating challenges (the ones with "complete xx times" under the challenge description), the non-repeating challenges are the only ones that count towards the progress for Up to the Task trophy. So once you get, for example, 15 Scrotus vehicle takedown or Shoot the driver challenge done, move on to the next non-repeating challenge.

Hope someone starting the hugely underrated game finds it useful. Always feel free to reach out on PSN Messages for any assistance.

I had this problem with the Gum Shoe challenge that no Stank Gum cars would spawn in Deep Friah's region. Tried everything and the solution was to restart the game and since then they always spawned within a few minutes after leaving Deep Friah's stronghold.

I think the problem was that I was playing for a long time without turning the game off and in which I also finished act 4. Last mission of act 4 has to do with stank gum and that might trigger the 'not spawning' of the vehicles.

Even finishing Act 5 didn't solve the problem, it was solved once I finally restarted my game. It took me 2-3h to resolve to that until I read some youtube comment about restarting the game to get them to spawn again :/

Also maybe useful as a general hint. If I needed to destroy cars with other cars that weren't the Magnum Opus, I sometimes found it easier to shoot out the tires on enemy cars. Doing this seems to always result in them stopping the car and getting out. After killing the driver, you can take as long as you need destroying their vehicle in whatever way you need. Especially useful if you're driving an enemy car already and don't have access to the thunderpoon and other weapons.

I found this made it easier when you had to do very specific types of kill, e.g. grinding or using the rear burner on some cars, since the enemy vehicle isn't moving around anymore.

The 2 charbone buzzard vehicles mentioned earlier are also very useful for those challenges especially if you reduced threat a lot and less enemy cars spawn. I remember taking one down with the side burner and by the time I took down the 2nd one with the sideburner, the first one already respawned!

For the grinding kill: you can do some damage to the car with the burner before you start grinding them to make it quicker :)

Yes indeed. I forgot to mention that, but the burner is very useful for reducing a car's health to near-death and then being able to finish it off easily via whatever other means.
