Does anyone else miss the "old" internet?

I see a documentry about "The dead internet" theory. Was very interesting and they definitely have a point.

When I first got on the internet back in 99. The net was super slow but it felt alive. There was activity everywhere. Geocities, msn chat rooms, chat rooms and forums were everywhere. Do chat rooms still even exist? I've not come across one for a decade or so 🙁

If trophies had come out in the year 2000, there would have been 1000s of websites for them. All with bad GIFs and view counters.

i miss free internet. for my older american friends here will remember back when dialup was the only option, you could go to walmart and they'd have racks and racks of cds that were free. 1000 free hours of AOL etc etc. i'd grab handfuls of those and never pay for internet. when the time on one disk ran out i'd just use another one. good times.

Not as old as some people. But, one of my fondest memories is way back in the mid 2000s and finding youtube for the first time.
I'd used Myspace and facebook like everyone else even if I was like 7 lol. I still remember the first video I saw it was Angry Video Game Nerds video on Castlevania 2 me and my brothers loved the nerds content and always get a touch of nostalgia when I watch him even his new content.

Another thing which might be a me only thing was playing those text based pokemon rpg websites idk why they just hit different.

I’m saying that.

I’ve heard the name as a punchline before, in jokes folks have made about Youtubers, so I assume he’s one of them…

…but never seen any content with them in it, come across any videos, or had it fed to me via algorithm or anything :dunno:

He's the biggest youtuber of all time, the guy who created the squid games YouTube video and gives away hundreds and thousands of dollars to people, he min maxes the entirety of YouTube

Ever since he got big, the bar has been set unbelievably high and it's made it so some people have had to try harder to compete

What really annoys me about the Internet today is its complexity. Websites are overloaded with pop-ups and videos that simply play. Why I need to search and find a house symbol as "back to front page" instead a simple hyperlink with Front Page ... It only leads to confusion. I was asked one day why I had the save icon on my desk - it was a floppy disk... just a floppy disk

Yes, the pages used to be quite ugly, but simple and clean! I mean..look at old youtube:

On Google you find exactly what you were looking for and not 4 sponsored links. You had a very specific question? No problem! The search result on Google was usually a forum entry where sunny_josi86 had the exact answer for you on page 46.

Social media was also much better back then. Do you remember when Facebook came along and everyone used it as a digital diary? You only saw posts from friends and what they liked. No videos, no reels and no advertising from any companies etc. and Facebook is new compared to the first pages with chat rooms. Where bad gifs and the first small trolls were common.

Video games were also more fun. The communties were smaller, but they were mostly made up of gamers who enjoyed playing with people from all over the world, it was just crazy. You rarely met casuals, and when you did, they tended to play browser games. Those were our mobile games!

And last but not least, there was no filter. comments/content wasn't deleted but dealt with, “teabagging” wasn't considered toxic, video clips from South Park, Two Girls one Cup and Glasass would have today's generation 3 reels uploaded with the title “the most violent thing i've ever seen. i need therapy”, media would report on it and it would be banned. We're still alive and we didn't kill each other!

Remember as we are also able to buy stronger laptops, phones with better cpu, ram etc. the requirements for websites, programs and games also increase day by day. Thank goodness I can afford a good way living. Though I still miss the times where I didn't spend half of my RAM just for a browser that opens psnprofiles.

Oh yeah, heavy usage of social media also is a problem worldwide. We are simply addicts.
