Popular Post The Chosen Undead
Welcome to my Platinum Showroom! Below you will find a list of all the great games I've Platinumed so far, along with earn dates, rarities, and short reviews. Note that all reviews are solely my opinion, not to be taken as a definitive review. I hope you enjoy reading through my list of accomplishments! ~~~~~ #1 - Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition January 6, 2014 || 16.4% Difficulty: 2/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 Good ol' Minecraft. I really enjoyed watching the PC version of this on YouTube, and I wanted it so bad, so naturally I was overjoyed when this version was announced. Gotta say, it was nearly as good as I expected it to be. Visuals are crisp and well-defined, the frame rate is smooth as silk, and there is a abundance of content to plow through. I've played this game for well over 100 hours on PS3, and I still haven't even come close to finishing everything I meant to do. I thoroughly enjoyed every second with this game, from my first steps in the world, to finding diamonds for the first time, all the way up to finding and taking down the Ender Dragon by myself. I rarely used the multiplayer features in this game, but when I did they ran just as well as the rest of the package. In terms of criticisms, there really isn't much I can offer. The game feels quite easy once you get good armor and tools, even on the highest difficulty; the online portion is overrun with whiny 12-year-old pyromaniacs; and the map size is somewhat constricted, but overall, these don't really detract a lot. Pros: Great visuals and frame rate Wealth of content to explore It's a genuine joy to play this game, even now Online can be deactivated Cons: Feels too easy Online is infested with young children and annoying burn-it-all people Small world size ~~~~~ #2 - Guacamelee! March 5, 2014 || 16.9% Difficulty: 4 / 10 Enjoyment: 9 / 10 Well, I have to say I wasn't expecting this. I got this for $15 off the PS Store after seeing a trailer, and the game ended up being amazing. The graphics were smooth and beautifully designed, the game had a cool story to drive it along, and the combat was both fluid and hard-hitting, with a great combo system to back it up. The difficulty was nicely balanced, and I liked the various powers I collected, and the way they were implemented into traversing the world. I especially like the final boss, which made use of several move-resistant shields to force me to switch up my tactics on the fly. The Hard Mode was very much so, and I may not have beaten it at all if not for a very peculiar glitch that I exploited to change the difficulty to Hard during the final boss fight. I like the game so much I bought both DLCs, and quickly became one of the 3% of players to get all the trophies, There is very little wrong with this game. The only real flaws I can find are that the game is too short over all (my second playthrough clocked in at 3.5 hours with 94% completion), and Hard Mode is just a bit too much so. Pros: Amazing style, tone, graphics, design, story, etc. Brilliantly designed combat that makes it fun to be a Luchador Tons of secrets around every corner Cool powers to find and use Cons: Too Short Seriously, it's way too short Hard Mode is a bit on the hair-puling side of challenging ~~~~~ #3 - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed April 10, 2014 || 11% Difficulty: 9 / 10 Enjoyment: 6 / 10 To start off, I really only got this game in an attempt to bolster my game catalog back when I first started playing. And for the most part, I'm glad I did. When I first started playing, I was wowed by the brilliant graphics, the cool combat, the sweet characters, and the scope of the world itself. And in the end, some of these things actually held up. The graphics are indeed astounding, especially for a game released in 2008. The world is indeed large in scope, with several varied, interesting locations to slash your way through. The combat is cool, but how much so I will cover in a second. Now for the negatives. At first, the characters and story seemed interesting and cool, and the combat deep and satisfying. As I played, however, I began to notice holes. The characters profess love, join rebellions, and attack major vantage points, but the story that strings it all together is weak and unsatisfying, with characters failing to fully explain why they are doing certain things, or even in certain places. The combat seemed cool until I realized that just a handful of variations on the same 5 or 6 moves were practically required for victory. I would have appreciated a bit more depth. Also, the highest difficulty in the game is far, far too hard. I struggled to beat the game even with an infinite health glitch activated. Chopping your way through the galaxy is much less fun that it should be when a single Stormtrooper(!) can down you in three hits. Several of the trophies in the game require grinding on a large scale. I also noticed an array of visual, gameplay, and auditory glitches. So with all that said, why did I play the game at all? Looking back, I can't see a legitimate reason for me to like it, but I did all the same. Even so, I'd have trouble recommending it to even a Star Wars fan. Pros: Amazing, gorgeous graphics Combat functions most of the time Story has some length Awesome boss fights Cons: Too hard Glitchy Poorly designed story Game rewards reliance on a handful of combos for every encounter ~~~~~ #4 - Portal 2 April 27, 2014 || 7.2% Difficulty: 4 / 10 Enjoyment: 9 / 10 Let me start off by saying that I adore this game. From the first time I took control of Chell, to any of the many multiplayer runs I did, the game never ceased to impress me. The graphics are beautiful, lavishly detailed and well-made. The story is weirdly touching, with an awesomely scripted and flawlessly voice-acted cast to back it up. The characters, such as they are, are endearing and charming, even when they're trying to kill you. The multiplayer is well-made, functioning as a separate campaign with its own set of trophies. I really have a hard time finding anything wrong with this game - the wonky physics always work, the puzzles are just hard enough to create 'Aha!' moments with relative frequency, and the game has a ton of content to chew on. My only complaint would be some slowdown during multiplayer that disrupted some timing-based puzzles for me. Pros: Lavish, detailed graphics Fluid frame rate in singleplayer Lengthy, challenging story mode with great characters Awesome voice acting and script work. Color-coded subtitles Physics are great Well-made Cop-op campaign Cons: Some distracting slowdown during multiplayer ~~~~~ #5 - Ratchet and Clank May 15, 2014 || 28.7% Difficulty: 2 / 10 Enjoyment: 9 / 10 I don't know why I never played this before, but I'm glad I did. I loved this game from top to bottom, from the graphics (which have been nicely remastered) to the combat (fun and frantic) to the overall design. I can't think of a single thing wrong with the game at all. I loved the variety of weapons and the different effects they had, I loved the story with its funny, well-written characters, and I loved the levels themselves, which were cleverly laid out so as to hide collectibles in plain sight. Pros: Nicely remade graphics Cool story with great characters Great level design Awesome weapon selection and combat Cons: There are no cons ~~~~~ #6 - Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando June 4, 2014 || 35.9% Difficulty: 3 / 10 Enjoyment: 9.5 / 10 This was included on the disc with the first R&C, so naturally I played the two back-to-back. I enjoyed this one even more than the first. The weapons were improved over their great originals, with some awesome new options thrown into the mix. The story was every bit as good as the first, and maybe even better. The graphics were on par with the first game. And to top it all off, I got a whole new set of cool levels packed with secrets to find. In terms of negatives, there's a bit more wrong with this game than the first. The game as a whole feels quite a bit more difficult, to the point where I had to grind out levels on earlier planets just to progress through the story. Also, I had to spend an incredible (to my then-self) amount of time grinding weapon uses for the trophy. Pros: Great graphics Good story with cool bosses Awesome new weapons and abilities Lots of new levels and secrets Cons: A bit too hard Weapon grinding is a pain ~~~~~ #7 - Transformers: Fall of Cybertron August 10, 2014 || 5% Difficulty: 9 / 10 Enjoyment: 10/10 I picked this game up after seeing several reviews touting its splendor online. After Platting it, I can truthfully claim that it's one of the best games I've ever played. The campaign is long and detailed, with rich graphics and well-made, well-voiced characters. The combat is very well-made, with a large array of weapons that can all take out enemies in different-yet-equal ways. The boss fights are awesome, and really show off the game's power. The levels and areas are richly detailed, with moving parts everywhere the eye can look and a huge level of detail to everything you see. There are also a huge amount of weapon blueprints, audio logs and other goodies to collect, with helps add to the already long campaign. The multiplayer is also absorbing and rich, with several highly customizable classes to choose from, and the same great weapons from the campaign to use with them. However, the online trophies are very difficult to obtain, to the point where a dedicated team of boosters is required to get most of them. The online portion of the game is also flooded with pro-level players and a number of hackers that was growing at an alarming rate when I quit playing a while ago. Pros: Beautiful graphics and locales Lengthy campaign mode with tons of secrets to find Awesome characters that mean something Fully customizable multiplayer mode Cons: Ridiculous online trophies Pros and hackers make up the majority of the online community ~~~~~ #8 - Need for Speed: Most Wanted (PS3) November 14, 2014 || 8.2% Difficulty: 6 / 10 Enjoyment: ∞ / 10 I'd actually wanted this game for a while before I got it, but when I saw it on sale digitally for $5, I couldn't resist. In hindsight, that was probably the best deal I ever got - this game is amazing. I have no qualms or doubts in saying the Need for Speed: Most Wanted is the best video game I've ever played in my life. The graphics are very detailed, and the game runs smoothly no matter how much is going on onscreen. The world at large is sprawling and imaginative, and nicely broken up by airfields and industrial zones. There is a huge array of cars to choose from, and each handles just as you would expect it to. There are tons and tons of unique and interesting events, from races with or without cops (whose A.I is pleasantly challenging, by the way), to speed tests and even cop-escape missions. I loved the competitive nature of the game's online interface, and the ease of accessing it all via a simple one-tap menu. There are a staggering number of billboards and smash gates to crash through, Jack Spots to find, and missions to beat, and it all comes together in a cohesive and utterly enthralling package. I only have two small gripes with this game. First, the smash gates (all of which you have to crash through for the Platinum) do not show up on the map like billboards and Jack Spots do, which can make it a bit tricky to find them. Second, races in online play are restricted to sets of 5. You cannot do any single races, nor participate in events at all without another player in the world. However, neither of these things really detracts from the experience at all. Pros: Great graphics and framerate Huge selection of cars that are all fun to drive A plethora of missions that are all unique Massive amounts of both story and post-campaign content Extremely easy to pick up and play with a simple drop-down menu interface Cons: Smash gates don't show up on the map Online events are restricted to sets of five ~~~~~ #9 - LittleBigPlanet Karting November 23, 2014 || 3% Difficulty: 6 / 10 Enjoyment: 3 / 10 I'd actually had this game for a while before I decided to Platinum it. It's an alright game, but it has a lot of problems. The game looks nice enough, but there are a few rough edges. The campaign in decently long, but I never felt invested in what was going on. There are lots of pickups to get, but some are so outrageously hard that I ended up paying $2 for a time-saver pack to skip having to put up with the difficulty. There are weapons, but none are particularly interesting. There is an online mode, but it is horribly glitchy and unstable, and ruined the already mediocre experience for me. This game takes way more effort that it is worth to Platinum, and I'm glad I got it out of the way. Pros: Nice graphics Lengthy campaign Cons: Boring weapons Much too hard to get all the pickups legitimately Online is glitched, unstable, and generally broken ~~~~~ #10 - Lone Survivor December 2, 2014 || 5.3% Difficulty: 5 / 10 Enjoyment: 6 / 10 I got this game as part of a pack of games, and intentionally put it off for later for some reason. The game has a nice pixelated art style that's cool to look at, and the visual filter does a good job of making everything dark and dangerous-looking. The gameplay is tense and fearful, just as it should be, and there's a constant feeling that your next step will be your last. There are a lot of subsystems that go into making sure you survive, and it's fun to figure them all out. That said, the game does have issues. The story is short and confusing, failing to provide and explanation for most of the things that happen in the game. The game being so short, it gets boring and stale over the minimum 5 playthroughs it takes to Platinum the game. However, I had a good time with the game, and the Platinum looks cool in my collection, so it's not a total loss. Pros: Deliciously dark and brooding Cool gameplay Interesting to figure out the gameplay systems Just difficult enough to keep you on your toes Cons: Gets stale ofter a couple runs through Short, confusing story ~~~~~ #11 - Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions December 7, 2014 || 6.8% Difficulty: 7.5 / 10 Enjoyment: 8 / 10 I got this game after reading positive reviews online (like most of my purchases). I found it to be a pretty good game. The graphics are really cool to look at, with a different style and filter for each world you play in. The combat is weighty and satisfying, and never unfair. Boss battles are exceptionally well-made, and are a highlight of the game. The story, such as it is, is cool, and I enjoyed playing through the game. I found the game to be very easy, until I hit Hard Mode, that is. The spike in difficulty from Normal to Hard is astounding, and I had a hard time just struggling through the levels until I figured out how to manage the tougher enemies. Pros: Cool story Awesome graphics that change with the world Well-made combat and boss fights Cons: Hard Mode is too much so ~~~~~ #12 - Burnout Paradise January 14, 2015 || 14.4% Difficulty: 3 / 10 Enjoyment: 7 / 10 This game came heavily recommended to me, and so I picked it up mainly as a test, and ended up having a good time with it. The graphics are pretty good for how old the game is, but they tend to get just a bit fuzzy at high speeds. The game setup is interesting, with all events (of which there are a lot) staring in an intersection and finishing at one of only eight points around the city. There's a good sense of speed, and a lot of cars to unlock. There are tons of jumps around the city, and it's a blast to go flying off them. However, there are a couple issues. There are only so many kinds of events, and they all begin to feel the same after a while. The DJ that narrates the game is grating and annoying, and I played with the game muted most of the time to escape not only him, but the game's awful soundtrack. Also, one online trophy in particular is very irritating to obtain. Pros: Nice graphics for such an old game Lots of events Cool game setup Good sense of speed Cons: Events feel samey Horrible soundtrack Grating DJ narrator ~~~~~ #13 - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II March 30th, 2015 || 9% Difficulty: 4 / 10 Enjoyment: 4 / 10 I bought this game solely on my experience with the first Force Unleashed - that is, I wanted to see if they got it right the second time around. The answer to that question is a resounding no. The game is almost identical to it predecessor in almost every way, and worse in some. There is only one area where the game was improved: the stability. The game runs much smoother that the first, and with less glitches. The combat is cool to pull off, and really make you feel in command of the Force. That's where the good parts end. The game's story 1: is far, far too short, 2: makes little sense, and 3: is thoroughly boring. There are a grand total of 9 levels in the game, and it took me maybe 20 hours at best to complete everything the game had to offer, and I only enjoyed the first 5 or so. There is a set of challenges, but there are only 10, and only 2 of those are really difficult. The final boss fight of the game is far too long, far too easy (even on Hard!), and finished with one of the worst endings to a game I've ever seen. I could not recommend this game to anyone, even though I cared enough to write a guide for it. Just...stay away. Pros: Less glitchy that the first Cool, powerful combat Cons: Identical graphics to the first game Horrible story with a terrible final boss Extremely short Too easy ~~~~~ #14 - Need for Speed: Rivals June 16, 2015 || 10.4% Difficulty: 3/10 Enjoyment: 8.5/10 I got this game based on my extremely positive experience with Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and I really hoped that this game would live up to the same level of quality. It comes close, but falls a bit short of first place. For starters, the game's graphics are astounding - they even excel over NFS MW by a bit. The world is massive and varied, with environments ranging from a desert to a seaside to a forest and more. There are lots of cars to collect and race, even on the Cop side of the campaign. As a racer, there is a unique risk/reward system in place where staying on the street longer gets you more points, but attracts more police attention - and if you're busted, you lose everything. There are a lot of events to play - around 60 on each side of the campaign, and there's just enough variety in the events to keep things fresh. There are weapons in the game, which I worried would give it a very Mario Kart-esque feel, but I was proven wrong - the weapons are very well balanced, and no car or weapon feels overpowered or unfair. There are some issues, though. The game tends to freeze for a moment at high speeds to load in the world, and the Racer A.I. sometimes gets confused and drives the wrong way during races. However, the biggest problem is pop-in. This game's pop-in is atrocious, and I encountered many things, from civilian cars, to cops and racers, to the entire road at one point popping in and out of existence as I drove. I also fell through the world on several occasions, at one point staying under for so long that the cops pursuing me forgot I existed and drove away. This game would be a lot more enjoyable if the technical implementation was better, but its current pop-in and glitch-infested state, it's a little frustrating to constantly be crashing into cars or barriers that haven't popped in yet. Pros: Beautiful graphics Massive world with lots of secrets Large car collection Cool weapons that actually work without turning the game into Mario Kart Cool risk/reward system for Racers Cons: Touchy A.I. Extremely poor technical implementation - pop-in, frequent loading times, other glitches, etc. ~~~~~ #15: Terraria June 20, 2015 || 2.5% Difficulty: 6/10 Enjoyment: 6.5/10 I bought this game on a whim, because it reminded me of Minecraft which I was thoroughly enjoying at the time (See Platinum #1). Now that I finally have the Platinum, I can tell you that Terraria, while it draws inspiration from Minecraft, is very much different from that game. The game has a nice, clean, pixelated graphical style that is cool to look at, and the chiptune music in the background is easy on the ears. The game starts off fairly simple, but quickly becomes extremely difficult. Careful preparation and a whole lot of panic-swinging are required to survive most excursions into the overworld, at least until you get high-level armor. The game has an absolutely staggering amount of content, so much so that only the most dedicated will see it all. There are hundreds upon hundreds of items to find and craft, enemies to kill, environments to see, and bosses to kill. (in fact, the Official Terraria Wiki has over 17,000 articles!). This overabundance of content leads to a feeling of perpetual frenzy, because no matter how much you do and and see, there is always more to do and see. There are some noticable problems with the game, though. The difficulty (mentioned above) is extremely high, especially on Hard Mode (which you can't turn off once it's on), and most hard Mode enemies can kill you in just a few hits, even with the proper weapons and armor equipped. Also, I ran into some minor glitches, with enemies spawning, items occasionally glitching out of existence, and a couple trophies not popping even after their requirements had been fulfilled. Pros: Great visuals Incredible amount of content that usually fits together well Environments and enemies are well-crafted and cool to interact with Cons: Way too hard Some minor glitching Could take over 500 hours to Platinum the game with no boosting Note: I want to make a huge thank-you to the following players: banzaiTNT, DARKB1KE, and most of all SarDarniTron. These players helped me along a huge amount in this game, and reduced my grind to the Platinum from well over a possible 500 hours down to 45. Thanks, guys. ~~~~~ #16 - Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit July 16, 2015 || 9.5% Difficulty: 5/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 The last of the PS3 NFS Plats for me to get (since I won't be getting NFS The Run) was the second-most enjoyable of them. For starters, this game looks great. The visuals are astounding (for a 5+ year-old game), and the open world is enormous and varied. The game always runs without a hitch or a hint of pop-in, which is huge plus. There are a lot of cars to pick from - a number which is only bolstered by the DLC content - and most of them handle well. There are lots of events to play, and there's more than enough variety to keep things fresh. The fact that this game, which was released in 2010, can have nearly identical graphics to Need for Speed Rivals (See Platinum #14), and also have a larger, more diverse world and be more fun to play is mind-boggling to me. That said, there are a couple issues. The A.I. is fair most of the time, but in some late-game missions it can turn into an infuriating death machine, reducing the events to a test of pure luck rather than skill. Also, the Cop career is a bit too short for how much XP you need to gain to reach maximum level. These are minor quibbles, though, and the game is still great overall. Pros: Massive, varied open world with lots of secrets Great selection of cars to choose from Technically stable (Take that, NFS Rivals!) Great graphics Lots of fun to drive and play events Cons: Cop Career is too short Some minor A.I. issues ~~~~~ #17 - inFAMOUS 2 August 16th, 2015 || 20.7% Difficulty: 4/10 Enjoyment: 7/10 I skipped playing the first inFAMOUS to get this Platinum, and this game ended up being much better than the first. The story is an indirect continuation of the first game's story, and the opening was really cool. Right away, the game's graphics impressed. Everything looks nice, if not exactly cutting-edge for a 2011 game. The city of New Marais is well-made, and fun to traverse. The story is decent, but ends up feeling like a 10-hour fetch quest with superpowers. Speaking of superpowers, the asortment you are given access to is very nice, and the game does a good job of making you feel like an all-powerful bad@$$ most of the time. I found little fault in the game, aside from some fetch-quest-y missions. That said, it did start to get boring on the second playthrough, especially since Hard mode isn't really hard at all. There was also a grind required to buy the last powers, but that could have been avoided if I'd managed my points more efficiently. Pros: You have awesome superpowers Large city that's fun to get around Nice graphics Cons: Story feels like a big fetch quest Little replay value ~~~~~ #18 - SSX January 30th, 2016 || 3% Difficulty: 4/10 Enjoyment: 7/10 I grabbed this one on a whim while on vacation. I didn't really expect much (it is a sports game, after all), but I was pleasantly surprised. The story, such as it is, is incredibly threadbare, and strung together with laughably terrible comic-book-style cutscenes that add very little to the game. The gameplay itself is much more enjoyable, with a short-ish 'story' mode accompanied by semi-online and online-matchmaking modes that give access to over 150 different drops. The graphics are serviceable, and the simplistic interface manages to look nice without getting in the way. There are a ton of different tricks to pull off, but since players with any skill will spend about 85% of their time in Super Tricky, they do start to feel samey after a while. Winning events (by scoring the most trick points or reaching the bottom the fastest in the campaign; the online modes add a tougher survival-challenge event) gets you medals and credits, the latter of which can be used to buy gear, but there is a flaw with both of these systems. Medals are almost entirely worthless, as the only requirement to pass most campaign events is placing in the top 3 (in a four-person event!), and the flow of credits from events is so fast and gear is so cheap that becoming a fully-upgraded pro boarder never feel like a challenge. The action is supplemented by 'Deadly Descents', which task the player with simply surviving an incredibly deadly run. Most of the intrinsic hazards (avalanches to outrun, deep pits that must be flown over) are fun and interesting to go up against, but some (Thins-air descents that require constant monitoring of a depleting air gauge or a drop down a sheer cliff in whiteout conditions) are more frustrating than fun. The problems continue online, though to a lesser extent. The online service is mostly barren of players, which is both good and bad - it makes getting all the placement medals for the Platinum pathetically easy, but you also need Friends to compete against for other badges. Lastly, playing online gets you access to the exact same tracks as other modes, and there aren't any new pieces of gear or upgrades that you can't get elsewhere, so playing online always feels like a slow grind to nowhere. The gameplay is enough to make up for that, though. Pros: Great sense of speed Massive array of tracks Fun extras, like Deadly Descents Cons: Some Deadly Descents are annoying Barren online modes Campaign is too easy Low-value money system Tricks feel samey after a while unless you go out of your way to wipe out every so often ~~~~~ #19 - Rayman Origins February 1st, 2016 || 12.4% Difficulty: 7/10 Enjoyment: 8.5/10 I ended up liking this one a lot more that I though I would. The game has a very cutesy, pleasant cartoon-like aesthetic to it, and it's never hard on the eyes. Despite the crisp, finely tuned graphics, the game never sacrifices control for style, so every action controls smoothly and and cleanly every time. That ends up being a good thing later on in the game. The story is decent for a platformer, and thankfully doesn't try to get in the way all that much. The game is full of tons of challenging levels to play, bonuses to fins, and records to beat, and it's enough to keep you immersed for a good 25-30 hours. Ubisoft even managed to make a water world that is fun to play, which is an accomplishment in and of itself. I did have a major issue, though. Remember those great controls? Yeah, they come in handy for the MASSIVE difficulty spike at the end of the game. While I breezed through most of the rest of the game, the last 4 levels by themselves contained more challenge that the entire rest of the game combined. I spent upwards of 35-40 minutes each just beating the levels, and more than an hour apiece on the time trials. That degree of difficulty-spiking is just unacceptable. Pros: Fun, family-friendly platformer that also appeals to completionists (like moi) Perfect, fluid controls Great, cartoon-y graphics to complement the controls Lots and lots of extra content Cons: Massive difficulty spiking ~~~~~ #20 - Shadow of the Colossus February 8th, 2016 || 2.9% Difficulty: 9.25/10 Enjoyment: 12/10 This is, hands down, one of the best games I've ever played. For a PS2 game (even a remake), the graphics are astoundingly good, the sense of scale is incredible, the atmosphere is incredibly immersive, there is over 50 hours of content, and, most importantly, every little thing you do in the game is a heap of fun to do. I can barely praise this game highly enough. The only issue I can find is a brutal difficulty spike for 2 of the 16 colossi in Hard Time Attack mode; the game is essentially perfect to me other than that. Pros: Gigantic, detailed word Really good graphics Incredible sense of scale Immersive atmosphere Tons of content Colossal (*snort*) replay value Cons: Some difficulty spiking ~~~~~ #21 - GRID 2 May 6th, 2016 || 4.9% Difficulty: 7/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 Okay, so I picked this one up on sale for USD $8 with all DLC included. What a deal that was - though after playing it to completion, I would gladly have paid full price for the game. Where do I even start? Well, the graphics and sound are high-quality (though by now those are pretty much expected of Codemasters' products), and the game runs without a hitch. The story, which is pretty standard for a racing game, is well delivered, and even makes creative use of the SportsCenter broadcast style for a couple of cutscenes. Thankfully, the story is light enough to keep mostly out of the way and let the cars do the talking. Gameplay is very solid here. There are a host of cars to choose from (almost too many, but I'll get to that in a second), and the majority of them are fun and easy to control. The game straddles a fine line between sim-racing and arcade-racing, and it comes off beautifully. Events are fast and fun, and carry a great sense of speed, with cars whipping around corners one after another, and it feels great. The campaign is also surprisingly long for a game of this genre, clocking in at nearly 30 hours (for me, at least), and carries a great sense of progression as tracks slowly become longer and more exotic. The game also supports online play, in several different game modes, from standard lap and point-to-point races to interesting Touge events. While the online is fairly barren now, it can still be a lot of fun to tear up familiar tracks with human opponents instead of bots. The game does come with some issues, though; While the campaign may be long, it feels even longer due to the absolutely brutal enemy A.I.. I consider myself to be somewhat good at racing games, and I struggled to win most races on the 'normal' setting. In fact, I even had to turn the difficulty down to get though a couple events! Also, while there are a lot of tracks, most of them are just different routes through the same locations you've already been through a dozen or more times already, so they begin to feel samey faster than they probably should. Finally, the flow of new vehicles in the campaign is so fast and so unmitigated that it becomes hard to get comfortable with a car and the way it handles - unless you stick to one car on purpose, in which case all your opponents take the souped-up new cars and leave you in the dust with them. Overall, this is a very quality game, and I would recommend it to any racing fans out there. Pros: Lengthy, varied campaign with lots of cars Solid, fun gameplay Tons of modes to choose from Cons: Brutal A.I. Tracks can feel samey Too many cars, too little time ~~~~~ #22 - Rayman Legends June 27th, 2016 || 7.6% Difficulty: 4/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 Picked this one up on sale, too. I love the visual style, right off the bat. Every area in this game looks beautiful, and is a joy to move through and interact with. The story is light but enjoyable, and provides just enough incentive to keep going on. Movement is fluid and precise, and never sacrifices precision for detail, much like its predecessor. There are a ton of levels, and even a whole chunk of the game dedicated to re-vamping levels from Rayman Origins. Every single action in the game is a ton of fun, and I always find myself smiling unconsciously when I play this. The music levels are also a genius idea. I only have one major gripe with this game, and that is the grind towards the 11th Level of Awesomeness. Anyone who has played this game knows what I'm talking about here. Even on top of 100% completion in the campaign, a player who earns Silver Cups (top 50% of players) in every Challenge every day still has a roughly 9-month grind ahead of them, since most Challenges only reset daily. This is very hard to forgive, and I definitely would have given up the game long before I did if it weren't so much fun. Pros: Beautiful art style Lots of levels, and all are fun Tons of little nods and gimmicks to freshen things up Music levels Cons: Huge grind for one trophy ~~~~~ #23 - Dark Souls II June 29th, 2016 || 17.1% Difficulty: 9/10 Enjoyment: 10/10 I played this one using the disc-based Scholar of the First Sin Edition, which on PS3 means that the same enemy and item locations are preserved, but all the DLC areas are accessible from the first time you find them, and the main campaign has a single new boss added. First off, let me just say that I love this game so much. DS II is my second-most-played game at 104 hours played, just under Skyrim at 116 hours and counting. I find it perfect in just about every way, from the graphics (which, while not exactly on Naughty Dog's standards, are still quite nice) to the sound design, to the area and enemy design, to the structure of the game, and so on. The story such as it is, is very deep and hidden under layers of cryptic dialogue and item descriptions, and it's fun to tease out. The gameplay is tense and tight, with every action working as it should and weapons feeling weighty and powerful as appropriate. There are a ton of areas to explore, secrets to find, ad enemies to beat up. Now, the enemies are where it's at. If you haven't played Dark Souls before, you should know that these games are very, very hard. Enemies are fast, unrelenting, and even the first enemies you find can off you in a few short moments. Unless you are well-equipped, most bosses will kill you in 2-4 hits as well, so boss battles are constant fights to avoid getting hit yourself as well as hitting your enemy. Fights generally reward patience and perseverance over bravery and wanton violence, and rushing in or shield-tanking will get you into an early grave faster than you can say 'Ouch'. The variety of enemies is also quite large, though in the latter portions of the game, most enemies and bosses start to feel like a stream of generic knights rather than a carefully put-together enemy horde. In addition, my first playthrough was actually the hardest for me. Due to the way NG+ works in Dark Souls, I came back on my second time through with endgame weapons and armor and foreknowledge of enemy and item locations. Needless to say, my second and third playthroughs, while still tough, were breezy compared to my first. Pros: Very nice art style Giant, mostly-open world with tons of secrets Weighty, well-tuned combat Awesome boss encounters Cons: Too many knights in late-game Later playthroughs are easier despite more and tougher enemies. ~~~~~ #24 - Goat Simulator July 15th, 2016 || 53% Difficulty: 3/10 Enjoyment: 6/10 What were you expecting to find here? It's a goat game. You can headbutt a car and blow it up. That's really all you need to know. The Flapmaster trophy might make you want to remove you own hand, but that's another story. Pros: You play as a goat Buggy Easy Cons: You play as a goat Buggy Easy Flappy Goat exists ~~~~~ As always, PM me with any questions or concerns you may have. Thanks for reading!
