A shmup by platinum games

This list looks tough! Beat the game on highest difficulty (hopefully some of these stack) and make it through each stage with no damage.

Hopefully you can do the 99 lives cheat (?) and play the high difficulty levels that way. I love schmups but I'm no pro at them. If I manage the platinum I'll be extremely pleased!

Edit: it's $40 so a sale will be required before I jump in. Also, there's $10 DLC that seems to be the story sold separately? Doesn't seem to be any gameplay in it, just cutscenes?

Why are shmups usually that expensive? :D

Glad to see another difficult game though, especially shmup game. I really start to love that genre, still need to play Ikaruga.

You should try the PC game Tyrian (or Tyrian 2000), if you haven't already. One of the best shmups ever made, and it became free in 2004. Has an actual engaging story with amazing writing & humor. You can get it on GoG, but OpenTyrian is probably the best experience.

Been waiting for this one and it's good to see that it has the same challenging list from steam. The pricing on these shmups are horrendous though really should be similar to indies in the 20-30$ range.

I agree. But at the same time if we want these type of games on ps4/ps5 . We need to support :)

I've been collecting shmups for a good while & the professionally made Japanese ones from companies that specialise in the genre are more often than not around 7000 Yen. Most of the time it's well worth it because you get very carefully designed games that are highly repayable & the chance of the game holding its value or even increasing in value is quite good.

I spent $120 on Ibara on ps2 back in the day, that would be a dream price for it these days. Spent $80 on Sakura Flamingo Archives on Xbox360, the price of that is obscene now. I see Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets is $300+ now, we have two copies of that here since I got one for my gf when it came out. If I went through my collection I'd have heaps of examples like that.

Ketsui Deathtiny for $35 digital might seem like it's slightly expensive, but that's half what I paid for the physical ps4 version, & that's in addition to the DS version ($100), 360 version ($80) & PS3 Limited Ed ($120) I had already purchased in the past. Well worth it at any of those prices, one of the best shmups ever made & deathtiny in particular is possibly the best choice for someone starting out due to the training mode it has. $35 is a very reasonable price point for a game of that quality. I remember being heartbroken when it was cancelled for the ps2 & at the time never would have imagined that game would be available outside Japan for so cheap later on down the track.

I've never hesitated to buy these games at full price on release because I want to support the companies that make them so they can make more. I just paid off an order of the ps4 & ps5 versions of Raiden IV along with Cotton Rock n Roll & the total was 14k Yen after shipping & tax & I was blown away by how cheap that was. I feel a bit starved of higher end Japanese shmups on ps4 TBH. The library is still nowhere near on the level of the Xbox 360, or even the PS2.

With that said I've collected all those cheap digital doujin/indie shmups as well & they're rarely anywhere near as refined & don't compare at all. Half the time they don't feel right & most of them should definitely be on the cheaper end. Apples & Oranges though, entirely different thing with those differences more & more noticeable the more premium shmups a person has played.

As for Sol Cresta, I heard there's an upcoming Japanese physical version so I'm holding off for that. Definitely looking forward to it.

Thats true and I have no problem supporting as I buy majority of my games at full price anyways but I do think that these smaller titles would benefit more if priced accordingly. In my store this game is 60$ tax included which is similar to other games of AA production or even certain triple A ones which it isn't and the fact that they're almost never on sale too doesn't help. Quality matters most but I do think these shmups should be adjusted price wise.

@CelestialRequiem how's it so far in terms of quality and challenge for platinum?

I think the quality is excellent. Had a few bugs but the game is really awesome. I'm really obsessed with it, honestly.

The platinum's difficulty is absolutely not a joke. We're looking at a 9/10 or 10/10 potentially.
