I earned the platinum trophy yesterday and decided to create this supplement to help you on your journey of becoming a master ninja! Tables of Contents Fundamentals Mechanics Essence overview Master Ninja (Advice) Recommended Boss Strategies _______________________________________________________________________________________ Fundamentals Ninja Gaiden is a game where you need to possess strong fundamentals if you wish to progress through the harder difficulties and live to tell the tale. Knowledge is only half the battle, you still need to apply that knowledge to be competent at Ninja Gaiden. I’ve listed in greater detail every tool and mechanic you’ll need to familiarise yourself with, regrettably the game lacks a dedicated training area so you’ll have to practise these in-between fights or near save statues. Movement: When it comes to movement you need to become accustomed to roll jumping. Roll jumping allows you to traverse through the levels faster which is imperative for chaining essence from room to room whilst blocking. Decision Making: Decision making is prevalent in many games and Ninja Gaiden is no exception. Every action you take, good or bad, will determine your fate because you’re committing to every button press, you’ll either reap the rewards or suffer the consequences. Mindlessly pressing buttons and hoping for the best will not get you very far. You need to think about what you're going to do next, how you’re going to approach each encounter. I-Frames: Ryu has an assortment of armaments at his disposal with hundreds of possible moves and strings at his behest however some attacks are simply better than others because they possess frames of invincibility. Performing an I-Frame attack allows you to damage your enemies whilst being relatively safe in the process. Enemy Prioritisation: Throughout the game you’ll often find yourself in a position where you have either a mage or an RPG/Grenadier taking shots at you whilst other enemies keep you at arms length. It’s imperative you focus on “priority targets” so you can deal with any remaining enemies in a favourable position. Essence Manipulation: Essence is the life and soul of Ninja Gaiden. Upon defeat enemies will drop one of three types of essence, Yellow, Blue or Red. What you choose to do next is extremely important, if you leave the essence floating around for too long it will disappear. Essence can be collected, dragged or held knowing which option to take in the heat of battle is crucial to your success. Regrettably I cannot teach you which option is the best, it’s down to you and your playstyle. Essence can be dragged to bring it closer to you without absorbing it for a UT (Ultimate technique) which is very beneficial if an enemy is close by. Collecting essence is very important because you can recover health and ki which may be the difference between life or death. Yellow essence will allow you to splash out on upgrades and consumables, after-all killing an enemy with a UT is worth 7 times its original value. On the harder difficulties holding essence is ESSENTIAL! After defeating the last few opponents if you hold block so you keep the essence floating in the air. It’s possible to make your way to the next encounter and use the leftover essence you left behind for an instant UT, making the next fight easier. This can be chained from fight to fight providing you can reach it before the essence vanishes. Video Reference Guard Break: Guard Breaking occurs when you block too many attacks or you block a specific attack that will break your guard. If you get hit whilst your guard is broken you’ll take damage however there are a few things you can use to circumvent this, you can dodge roll out of the way or you can adopt an advanced strategy known as "Guard Resetting". Take Ishtaros as an example, whilst grounded she has a triple whip attack. If you block each strike normally the first will cause a guard break and the second strike will cause you to take damage. However, it's possible to block each strike without taking damage! Once you block the initial attack, you need to quickly release and hold block again before she hits you with her follow-up attack. Guard Damage: If blocked, certain attacks will cause you to take guard damage. These are more often than not elemental in nature for instance a ninpo casters projectiles. These attacks should be avoided by dodge rolling through them at the correct time or abusing a move with I-frames. Throw Escape: If you get grabbed don’t wait for the entire animation to play out because if you mash buttons you can escape grabs therefore minimising the damage you receive. A prime example would be Spirit Doku on Chapter 17, one of his grabs sucks the life out of you whilst restoring his! Unblockables: Not all moves are blockable, the first that springs to mind is Guillotine Throws from Ryu Clones (Doppelgangers). Juggles: Certain attacks within the game will launch your opponent into the air whilst you remain grounded for instance Forward + Triangle (Hold Triangle after pressing) using the Dragon Sword. Whilst your opponent is airborne you can juggle him through the use of shuriken cancelling, however this should only be done against the final enemy because it leaves you vulnerable. Onlanding UT’S: If you're unable to perform onlanding UT’s consistently then you need to practise them until they become second nature. An onlanding UT means you immediately absorb essence from an aerial position when your feet touch the ground. Natural & Unnatural strings: If an enemy breaks through your defence and you start to take damage, you’d naturally presume there’s nothing you can do about it and you end up taking every hit of their combo. Most combo strings in the game are not true-combos therefore if you get hit by an enemy hold block whilst you're getting hit and you’ll be able to block and evade after the first hit in many situations. Hit-Confirming: Although hit-confirming is primarily a fighting game term it applies to Ninja Gaiden. You shouldn't dial in a sequence of attacks because if you whiff mid-combo or upon landing you will be punished for it, especially on the harder difficulties. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Mechanics There are many techniques and mechanics in Ninja Gaiden to keep you occupied for hours on end. Like everything in life some things are more efficient than others and these are no exception, therefore I’ve listed the most useful mechanics for your convenience. Wind Path - More commonly referred to as “bunny hopping”. Bunny hopping is under-valued within the Ninja Gaiden community. This technique allows you to jump on to an enemies back and then jump off them this provides you with the opportunity to do whatever you want to them. You can immediately flying swallow them once you land which is guaranteed to hit, you can Izuna drop them or you can pull-off an onlanding UT. Shuriken cancelling - Shuriken cancelling is used predominantly to extend your combos whilst your opponent is airborne, allowing you to deal more damage! Ninpo cancelling - A great example of ninpo cancelling is during your wall attacks in Unearthed Challenge 4. Whilst attacking at the peak of your jump or delaying your attack once you land there’s only a small window of invincibility therefore you can opt for a ninpo cancel to give you a bit of breathing room and space whilst you plan your next move. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Essence Overview Essence is the lifeblood of Ninja Gaiden, knowing when to absorb and collect it will be crucial to your success. Essence appears in a few different colours and will offer different levels of UT which will be explained below; Yellow - Yellow essence is the game's currency. If you absorb the essence for an ET (Essence technique) or a UT you’ll receive 20% of its original value. Furthermore a single yellow orb will only grant you an ET, you’ll need to absorb 2 yellow orbs at the same time for a fully charged UT. Killing an enemy with an ET will grant you with x3 times as much essence as a regular kill whilst a UT provides x7 times the amount! Red - Red essence will replenish a single shot of ki/magic upon collection however this is a rare drop. When absorbed it will immediately grant you a fully charged UT. Blue - Blue essence replenishes your health for each orb collected, however if you kill an enemy with an ultimate technique they will never drop blue essence. When absorbed a single blue orb will grant you a fully charged UT. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Master Ninja (Advice) Master Ninja separates the men from the boys, your carrying capacity is reduced, restricting your consumables therefore the game expects a higher level of proficiency from the player. From my experience I didn't find this difficulty as bad as I thought it was going to be because the missions prepared me in good stead however there are a plethora of ways to make it easier if your struggling. Unless you want to experience the hardest difficulty in its truest form, i.e. without upgrades I strongly suggest you use every accessory to your advantage. Playing through the game on Master Ninja difficulty requires you to earn a "Master Ninja" rating at the end of every chapter. Every encounter has a fixed time-limit, completing the fight within the time limit awards you 10,000 additional points. Upon clearing a chapter you'll be allocated points based on your time, kills, remaining ninpo and score. The most important aspect is your score so don't worry about anything else! Whenever you knock your opponent down its vital you perform the move "Fiend Sealer" to finish them off. Fiend Sealer is performed by pressing Triangle near a downed opponent. The biggest downside of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 on the PlayStation 4 is how the game prioritises your attacks and the camera is awful. I'll give you an example, I was trying to attack a boss on Master Ninja difficulty I believe it was Hydracubus, and the game prioritised my attacks to strike a nearby enemy rather than the boss which is the last thing I wanted to do. Play smart, make regular saves in different save slots so if you come up short, you can revisit an earlier save to improve your score. Before completing a chapter please ensure you have your ki slots intact because you'll be rewarded with 100,000 points which really helps when your going for Master Ninja ranks. Specific chapters have access to Team Ninja logos, if a logo is nearby don't hesitate to ninpo your enemies because you'll get them back for FREE. A prime example would be outside "Han's Bar" in Chapter 4, you're faced with 2 motorbikes, yes you can attempt to hit them with UT's but you risk losing the time bonus, its much easier to fire off 2 Inferno ninpos killing them immediately then replacing your ki with the TN logo before collecting the item left on the ground and finishing the chapter. Talisman's of Rebirth are a hot commodity therefore its in your best interest to save them for when you really need them. Yes you can collect a handful during your playthrough but there expensive to replace costing 25,000 a pop. I saved mine for Alma, Awakened Alma and the gauntlet at the end of Chapter 18. Naturally you'll want to utilise every costume and accessory to maximise your efficiency. Here's what you'll need and how to obtain it; Ryu Hayabusa (Recommended Unlocks, Techniques, Weapons, Ninpo & Accessories) Of the two playable characters, Ryu has the most diverse move-set. He has access to countless weapons ranging from close range to projectiles. Ryu can conjure magic to get him out of a pinch whilst inflicting damage to his opponents, did I mention he's immune to damage whilst doing so, well he is! Certain techniques and accessories have been omitted from this list because I honestly didn't find them valuable enough to mention. The White Dragon helmet is beneficial in the earlier chapters when you have base health but once you progress far enough into the game it loses its value. Wind Path (Mechanic): Without question the most important defensive tool at your disposal outside of blocking. Against human sized opponents it temporarily staggers them allowing you to follow-up with whatever you want. Furthermore against spell-casters it will cancel their chanting animation! Izuna Scroll (Technique): Invaluable against human sized opponents. If for some reason you cannot find the scrolls location like I did, you can purchase it from Muramasa for 1,000 essence. Counter Attack Scroll (Technique): Very important scroll to collect/purchase because there are a lot of enemies within the game that are easy to defeat if you learn to counter them. A few examples would be Ryu Clones, Berserkers & Gamov to name a few. Grip of Murder costume (Costume): Obtained by completing the game on "Very hard" difficulty. This costume greatly increases your attack and defence. Azure Dragon helmet (Helmet): Obtained by completing Chapter 9 on "Hard" difficulty. The Azure Dragon helmet greatly increases your attack at the cost of defence. Amulet of the Sun (Accessory): You'll have to purchase this from Muramasa for the low low price of 5,000 orbs. This accessory increases your attack power and it stacks with both the Grip of Murder costume and Azure Dragon helmet. Amulet of Fortune (Accessory): The Amulet of Fortune doubles the amount of ki you receive from Red essence. I personally only used this accessory during chapter 17 and 18 because of all the Ghost Fish. Unlabored Flawlessness (Weapon): Unlike Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, you have to spend essence to upgrade your weapons. You must purchase the Wooden Sword from Muramasa's shop for 500 essence in order to receive the Wooden Sword. Unless its fully upgraded which costs an arm and a leg its useless, however Master Ninja has an abundance of essence available therefore I strongly urge you to upgrade it. This is the strongest weapon in the game provided you have low health, it's damage output is multiplicative and stacks with the aforementioned accessories and costumes. To give you an example of how much damage this thing does with low health, I was playing on Master Ninja difficulty and I hit Doku on Chapter 13 with a UT and destroyed him! I attacked Smaugan the dragon in Chapter 15 and used Square, Triangle, Square, Square, Square when his head was exposed and I melted 85-90% of his health away in one simple combo. Dabilahro (Weapon): This should be your go to weapon once you receive it in Chapter 10, Forward + Triangle together is one of the best moves in the game. The Dabilahro's UT is very good as well, I personally used UT's against Pill Bugs, Wasp Fiends, Ghul's and the shark-like enemies to farm essence in their respective ambushes. Please note, you can miss certain ambushes out and still get the Master Ninja rating, I didn't complete the 100 Berserker ambush which is very challenging/tedious to finish. Vigoorian Flails (Weapon): Although you can use the Lunar Staff to dispatch Ghost Fish (Piranha's), I found it much easier to use the Flails. Start by neutral jumping into the air with Square, then perform onlanding Square, Square, Square, then repeat the process until their all dead. Dragon Claw & Tiger Fangs (Weapon): This weapon is a shadow of its NGS2 counterpart, the standout move for the DCTF are its 360 Triangle which inflicts a ton of damage against specific bosses for example, Yotunfrau, Alternator & Dynamo provided you stack as much damage as humanly possible. Dragon Sword (Weapon): The Dragon Sword should be your primary weapon for the majority of the game. Some good strings to use are; Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle or Square, Triangle, Triangle. 360 Triangle is especially good against Marbus & Alma whilst Failed ET is useful against Nicchae after she lunges towards you because it can knock her arse down allowing you to use the standard Izuna combo to deal considerable damage, just replace the last Triangle with Square. Bow/Strongbow (Projectile Weapon): Ryu's bow and arrow is invaluable at killing enemies from afar. You can equip either AFDS Cores or Explosive Arrows once you progress through the game. AFDS Cores are great for defeating the Tank and Helicopter whilst Explosive Arrows are very effective in Eternal Legend. Windmill Shuriken (Projectile Weapon): Similar to a regular shuriken with a few important differences. It's a single projectile that returns to you after throwing, naturally it can cancel/interrupt enemy attacks however some enemies/bosses are immune to them such as Ryu Clones (Doppelgangers) and Murai. Art of the Inferno (Ninpo): Fire Wheels has its uses but Art of the Inferno is simply better across the board. Ideally you'll want to upgrade it AFTER you max out the Art of Inazuma. Art of the Inazuma (Ninpo): Hands down the best ninpo in the game when it comes to crowd control, jewel of the demon seals are sparse therefore it's imperative you save them so when your receive the Art of Inazuma in the ice caves you can fully upgrade it. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Rachel When it comes to complexity, Rachel is severely lacking in that department. She has access to a single weapon (The Warhammer) and ninpo (Blades of Ouroboros). She's a solid enough character but she's not as powerful as her NGS2 counterpart. Her gun from NGS2 has been replaced with a wire hook which can knock enemies down which has its uses but its nowhere near as potent as the gun. She cannot twirl, dash or gun cancel out of attacks, and her failed ET lacks I-Frames. Guillotine Throw (Technique): Her Guillotine throw is very effective at taking priority targets out of the equation. Honestly I cannot recall the amount of times I forgot she had access to this because I'm so used to part 2. Warhammer (Weapon): Rachel's signature weapon has a few standout moves such as her wall jump Triangle attack, UT and Counter attack. I personally used her wall attacks strictly for Unearthed Challenge 4. Another good string is her Square, Square, Square, Square, Triangle attack that results in a grab. Biker Costume (Costume): Obtained by completing the game on "Hard" difficulty. This outfit increases Rachel's damage output significantly. Sun Earrings (Accessory): These earrings increase Rachel's damage output and they stack with her Biker costume, giving Rachel her maximum damage output possible. You can purchase these from Muramasa for 5,000 essence. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Recommended Boss Strategies In this section of the guide I'll provide my personal methods for overcoming Ninja Gaiden Sigma's bosses, please take into consideration my methods may not be the most optimal but they were sufficient enough to get the W. There's one boss in particular that I loathed fighting against because the only strategy available is luck-based, I'm referring to Awakened Alma, you simply have to flying swallow her and hope she falls down to the ground allowing you to land a small combo. On the harder difficulties it's important to note that ALL bosses will have backup, therefore you should focus your efforts on disposing them first before engaging the boss. Murai: Murai is vulnerable after both his charging lunge attack and his roll. You can use wall jump attacks to deal with him like I did but this method isn't without its risks so use with caution. The wall jump method isn't safe because more often than not your attack will whiff (miss), or he'll block it! He can punish you if your constantly spamming wall jumps because your not safe until you descend with your attack. Under no circumstances should you spam attacks whilst Murai blocks, because his defence is rock solid and he'll counter your arse! Masakado: Simply kill the spellcasters and then absorb their essence for either ET'S/UT'S with the Dragon Sword to inflict significant damage to his horse. Once he falls off and loses his trusty steed, you can kill him however you see fit. Doku: It's possible to defeat Doku using an ET loop but this requires precise timing and position to pull off. Doku is vulnerable after his AOE and breath attack, both of which can be punished with an onlanding ET at the correct distance. Hydracubus: Using the Dragon Sword flying swallow away at its tentacles, once both are destroyed you have a small window of opportunity to damage the boss. I personally used Square, Triangle, Square, Square, Square with the Dragon Sword or back to back UT's. Bone Dragon: Onlanding 360 Triangles with the DCTF Alma: Flying Swallow her with the Dragon Sword, if she falls use the combo mentioned above. Worms: Onlanding 360 Triangle with the Dragon Sword or Square, Square, Square, Square, Triangle with the Dabilahro. Occasionally I would land an ET with the Dabilarho if they hide inside their tunnels. Fiend Paz Zuu: I used a combination of Windmill Shurikens to his face, Explosive arrows whilst jumping after dodging his laser beams. Once he drops his head I spammed 360 Triangles with the DCTF. Ryu Clones (Doppelgangers): Doppelgangers have the ability to Izuna, Wind Path and Guillotine throw you. They have access to Inferno or Fire Wheels ninpo which they use in a similar manner as you, to take the heat off! My preferred method of defeating them was to hit-confirm into Izuna Drops using the Dragon Sword or using Forward + Triangle with the Unlaboured Flawlessness (UF). Ishtaros (Ryu): You can counter her claw attack however it's more effective to block it then immediately roll to the left or right and punish her using Square, Square, Square, Triangle with the True Dragon Sword. Spirit Doku: Using the UF, punish him with the Izuna combo replacing the last Triangle with a Square. Vigoorian Emperor (Angel Form): Using the True Dragon Sword (TDS) attack the chest with 360 Triangle before moving to the arms. To prevent yourself from getting knocked off the platform use the Art of Inazuma to damage him. Vigoorian Emperor (Demon Form): I used a combination of Explosive arrows, cores and Inazuma ninpo to destroy him. Alternatively you can spam level 3 Inazuma ninpo whilst standing in lava but you need to have plenty of resources to hand. If the Emperor, launches his skeleton heads at you, you can kill them with the Vigoorian Flail like you would with Ghost Fish. Then you'll need to evade his head which will attempt to grab you, if you successfully avoid the head you can deal solid damage as a reward! Fiend Murai: Forward + Triangle using the Unlaboured Flawlessness. If he summons the dragon you MUST avoid it either from a well timed jump or using ninpo because this will one-shot you on Master Ninja difficulty. Please note you can use the Unlaboured Flawlessness with low health to absolutely destroy any boss the game throws at you but this requires a deeper understanding of the game then your typical trophy hunter. This is the epitome of high risk, high reward because literally any hit will kill you! I hope you found my supplementary guide helpful, it took me a considerable amount of time to type, edit and format! Lonemankane
this seems like a good guide/ tips and so on. not many people put down things like this and it is really annoying when no one does this stuff as i much rather people make small hints and tips then guides that can be flawed or not updated in god knows how long.

Edusbr
While Inazuma is pretty good, Inferno can also be a lifesaver and it will be your main nimpo throughout 3/4 of the game, so i would advise upgrading it as soon as possible. Even then, chances are you'll also have enough jewels of the demon seal to upgrade Inazuma as soon as you get it anyways (if you skip Ice storm, as you should). I would also suggest going back to Muramasa after getting the last scarab during chapter 18 for the Dark Dragon Blade, this weapon can hit as hard as a low health UF and it'll be a great help, especially on very hard/ Master Ninja difficulty. I rarely used Inferno outside of some key fights on Master Ninja difficulty. At level 1 it was more than sufficient for me. When I played through the game on Very Hard difficulty I didn't have enough JOTDS to upgrade both ninpo's so I decided to upgrade Inazuma instead. On Master Ninja difficulty I missed a few scarabs because I was playing through the game using muscle memory so I didn't have access to the Dark Dragon Blade until the final chapter. Are you sure the Dark Dragon Blade with equipment is as strong as low health UF with accessories? I only used a handful of primary weapons on Master Ninja difficulty (Dragon Sword/True Dragon Sword, Dabilahro, Flail and UF) and that was enough to get through it without too many problems. I only used a handful of primary weapons on Master Ninja difficulty (Dragon Sword/True Dragon Sword, Dabilahro, Flail and UF) and that was enough to get through it without too many problems. I used it all the time. If you're going for MN rank you'll get more essence than you can spend, so i used to buy a lot of elixirs to spam inferno during tough fights. That's because during very hard, all ninpo related stuff are scarab rewards, so if you weren't collecting them you wouldn't have enough to upgrade both ninpos. During Master Ninja though, all JOTDS are on the same spot as they were on normal, so you can have them both maxed out during chapter 15 (the same chapter you get Izanuma). The Dark Dragon Blade has some attacks that can hit as hard as a low health UF, not all of them. Unfortunatelly you'll only get this weapon during the last chapter, so if you manage to get there already, chances are you don't really need the dark dragon blade, but it does make things easier, especially the Ishtaros boss fight where you can keep using wall attacks and charge your UT when she's spinning and let go at the same moment she lands, if it connects, it's almost half of her health bar gone. I would recommend getting all scarabs, they aren't hard to get and the rewards are well worth it. Also, not sure if this is commom knowledge, but you can get the Dabilahro during chapter 7 if you backtrack to the great plaza after getting the incendiary shurikens from the glass case, you can clean the catacoms really fast with it. ruexnimbus
Ishtaros has another opening when she raises her leg to stomp on you. It's a two-hit strike in about 1 second, first with the knee then with the foot. Block the knee to have your guard broken then dodge her foot and she will be momentarily off balance. She uses this attack frequently if you stay toe-to-toe with her. Also, I would add for fighting multiple knightmares use the lunar staff's counter-attack only. It's the only weapon and method I've found fast enough to fight them while evading the explosions they cast.
