Platinum #296 - Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster

I think I've figured out the key to getting the most enjoyment out of these pixel remasters. The key is to put off the bestiary thing until the end. Only worry about missable bestiary entries, keep encounters off otherwise. That way you can blast through everything without feeling like every dungeon is a slog. Then you just have one giant slog left at the end, but by then you're OP and can just go around collecting enemies. Anyway, I'm shocked at how much I'd forgotten about all these old FFs cause I didn't remember their stories being this good. This one genuinely had a gripping story and meaningful characters. 16/50 games complete. I earned a few badges with this one  Next up is Theatrhythm. Not too excited for that one cause I don't do music games, but it's a Final Fantasy so it must be done lol Maybe I'll enjoy it more than I'm thinking. Ima do Driveclub DLC before that anyway, but that doesn't apply to this challenge.

Almost finished with my third list as I just have my hardcore run left in Turok 2. This game was not what I expected at all and the levels are so confusing if you try to get everything, especially since I don't have very good surroundings awareness in first person view. I will see how I can go to complete the hardcore run as I somehow managed to die once to the end boss despite playing on very easy. I might need to get a bit better at shooter games 😅

 

Anyway apart from this progress I completed three more games: Sifu from my backlog, Mass Effect Andromeda that I started in February and Moonscars that was shorter than I thought it would be.

 

Not much to say about Moonscars. I don't mind the short duration but it was maybe too simple difficulty-wise for the metroidvania genre as you can easily beat every boss on first try without needing to really learn the pattern, and learning the pattern and finally beating a boss is one of the most enjoyable part of this genre for me.

 

As for Sifu, I started the game when it came out but having just played Sekiro at the time I think I needed a break from the parry-mechanic despite loving this kind of game. The new difficulties that were added are a nice addition, especially to get collectibles or miscellaneous trophies and chances are high that I will come back to play the arenas DLC at some point.

 

Lastly It took me a long time to complete Mass Effect Andromeda mainly because I was having a hard time starting on insanity from the start and was not really motivated to go through 2 playthroughs so I took a break. Then my wife played the original trilogy for the first time and literally loved it so we did a first playthrough of Andromeda together on normal before I went for insanity and missed trophies on NG+ (such a breeze compared to NG). What was really disappointing were all the game breaking bugs that are still present after all these years. The two most infuriating ones were first the final quest not triggering and having to reload an older save to redo the previous one and losing all side-content progress made in the meantime. And for my last trophy: the trophy for having six strike teams not popping when unlocking my sixth team. I can't describe that feeling when you are happy to get the last trophy that will give you the platinum and it doesn't come. Thankfully this trophy has two different requirements to unlock and I was able to unlock it through the multiplayer requirement shortly after. So a mixed bag despite liking some parts of the game, mainly because of the bugs.

 

Also I have another completion to replace a game in list 1 for new badges. I completed That's you!, a party game that requires to use external android devices in order to play. I could not fit it in any other list and I don't have any other peripheral game so it will fit nicely in the first one. I am using it as my 1/10 and moving Flowers to my 3/10 instead of Mass Effect. If I didn't make any mistake, I don't lose any badge and I get the Peripheral Master in addition to the ones I already have for a total of 17 badges on this list @Rebourne07

Finished The Evil Within platinum last night for the 10 difficulty.  I really enjoyed the gameplay, but the story was kind of a mess.  I'm hoping the DLC explains things a bit more. 

 

This is a game that relishes challenging the player and while I enjoyed those challenges I'm really glad to have finally finished the platinum.  It required 3+ playthroughs from me and my final playthrough was for the speedrun trophy, which was great because by this point I was over the base game and wanted it done as fast as possible.  The hardest challenge for me personally wasn't Akumu difficulty (take any damage at all and die mode for those who don't know) but the no upgrades run in my first playthrough.  The base abilities and weapons really suck and not knowing enemy placement or what to do in the first playthrough made it very challenging.  By my Akumu run I had a much better feel for the game and the upgraded weapons, abilities and ammo stock made the combat so much easier.  

 

Anyway I'll be working on the DLC for this game and picking away at FFVII Rebirth before starting the Evil Within 2 so it'll probably be a while before my next update.

I'm currently working through ME Andromeda going the insanity route on the first play-through and it is tough until you level your skills and gear.

I feel it's much harder than Insanity in ME1 and ME2 but that maybe due to my familiarity with those games.

 

And the bugs are very annoying:

I've had instances where every door in the spaceship wouldn't open so I was stuck on the bridge until I quit and reloaded.

I've fallen through the world several times times.

And I lost all sound in the game during a cut-scene with no subtitles so I had to reload as I had no clue what was going on.

@Shyjun I updated your list #1 with Peripheral Master. I'm so glad you're playing Turok 2 lol Imo it's the best old school shooter of all time, maybe second to Doom II, but even that's debatable. Good luck on hardcore mode! Saving frequently and reloading if you get hurt too bad or waste too much ammo is the key.

Another Update with my 5/10 completed - Mass Effect Andromeda

 

Mixed feelings about this one, because it was better than advertised but I think it suffered being over-shadowed by the original trilogy.

Story was OK but I think the exploration was handled much better.

I was pleasantly surprised that it fits between ME 2 and ME 3 in the timeline. I thought I was playing it out of sequence due to the order I needed for the OCD badge.

Bug were a bit of an issue as I posted before and I had to replay a section of the final mission because a console I needed to progress just didn't appear.

Vanquish is finished. Very good, fast-paced sci-fi shooter from Platinum Games in Japan. After I got the Platinum on PS3 last week, I immediately bought the remaster on PS4.

2nd Game for list #2 Completed today PC Building Simulator.  I don't have a lot to say about this game. It is a PC building simulator with an incredibly unstable save system. Note to anyone else who feels like building the same exact computer for 50+ hours, play this game on version 1.00. On version 1.00 you can use the PCBay Glitch to make on average $2-3k per job as opposed to 3 to 4 hundred. I can't imagine how painful of a grind $1,000,000 would be on the most recent patch.

 

On an unrelated note Star Labs for Injustice is complete. That leaves just a few small things to clean up once I get to that point in the list.

Even if it´s not an tripple A title It tells a really good story and also this game is a masterpiece and I'm very excited to see how Hotline Miami 2 will play.  Congrats! Dude Hotline Miami is by far my favorite indie game of all time. I’ll warn you though, Hotline Miami 2 is STUPID HARD. Like not just a step up from 1…I’m working on hard mode right now after giving up years ago and I’ll tell you…it’s the “not fun” kind of hard. Be prepared lol

Agree 100%. I had a hell of a lot of fun with the original. The deaths felt like fair skill checks. With 2, it just wasn't fun. So many deaths from off-screen enemies that just felt unfair. I gave up in the A+ ranks.

Quick Update: I've made a decent amount of progress on Batman Arkham Knight since my last update. I've jumped from 77% to a respectable 90% having completed the Batgirl DLC and wrapped up a few miscellaneous trophies along the way. I'm 60% of the way through new game + at the time of writing which I'm hoping to wrap up before my next update then I can move on to the fun stuff, collectibles! I'm contemplating on starting a new project to make progress towards the challenge, since I'm a bit burnt out with Arkham Knight.

 

Perhaps, I will start God of War 2018 which I heard is a banger! Don't worry I'll have RE4 Remake and Batman Arkham Knight as side projects. Regrettably in a few weeks I'll have less time to play since my niece will be off school for half term for 2 weeks which will hinder my progress so I guess it's time to put some effort into God of War 2018 boys!

Happily reporting a win with a recent completion of Do Not Feed The Monkeys, an extremely off the wall indie game where you play as a voyeur watching people in their homes through hacked webcams. You report their schedules to a shady organisation so that you can afford rent.

 

It's such a bonkers game and features some non-PC humour. After a blind first playthrough where I didn't think I was going to enjoy it, looking up some tips for trophies made subsequent playthroughs (ie trophy hunts) far more enjoyable. Have a look and see if it's your type of thing.

Nearing the end with 2 more games completed!

 

Same as before, I managed to complete my minesweeper list before my third one with Metal gear Solid, so I will invert them. Pleasantly surprised with this one as I am not a big fan of stealth in video games. That was the main reason I never played the series before as I thought it would not be my cup of tea but I quite liked this one and will gladly follow with the next ones. Still, some of those 300 VR missions were quite frustrating as it requires you to be precise but the controls aren't.

I also quickly completed The Artful Escape before it leaves PS+, replacing Mass Effect 3 on the list to avoid the Old School badge.

I checked several times to be sure I do not earn any badge on this list but feel free to tell me if I missed something. I have 5 PS4 and 5 PS5 games, and the most represented genres are Shooter and Indie (5 each).

 

I completed Thymesia as well for my 5th list. A souls-like that is quite short compared to other games in the genre. The combat system seemed quite hard at first but once you unlock some abilities it becomes way easier.

 

Also, I managed to get gold cups more consistently in Rayman Legends and will be able to get my final trophy sooner than I thought so I will include it in the list.

 

Only 5 games to go! I will most likely keep Hollow Knight for the end as it is one of my favourite games ever (who would have guessed?) and I already 112% it on Switch so I don't have any worry about my ability to finish it. On the contrary, the most challenging game left will surely be MGS 2 or Super Meat Boy and we will see if I can surmount it or if I hit a road block with those ones.
