Microsoft: Xbox One won’t hit Japan until 2014

"Tier 2" country is part of the "second wave" of console rollout.

When Microsoft announced a November launch date for the Xbox One back at E3, the company pointedly did not include Japan in a list of 21 countries where the system would first be available. Now, a Microsoft employee has used an interview to confirm that the system will not be released in Japan until the "second wave" of releases, sometime after 2013.

In an interview with Japan's 4Gamer (translated by DualShockers) that followed a financial announcement, Microsoft Japan President Yasuyuki Higuchi confirmed that Japan is a "Tier 2 country" for the Xbox One launch and that the system will be "delayed a little bit [compared to North America]." Later in the interview, Higuchi confirmed that the system will not hit Japan in 2013, and he clarified that the system's Japanese launch "won’t be delayed too much from the North American release," suggesting an early 2014 release in the country.

The news isn't exactly surprising, considering that the Xbox 360 is practically a non-entity in the Japanese market, being outsold many times over by the Wii and PS3 in the country. The original Xbox received a similarly lukewarm reception in Japan, thanks in part to the console's large physical footprint and controller, according to some reports. Japan is no longer at the leading edge of every console launch either; the country got the original Wii two weeks after the North American launch and had to wait 3 weeks after America to get the Wii U and the Xbox 360.

Still, the delayed launch isn't a very strong sign for what outgoing Xbox President Don Mattrick called Microsoft's commitment to an "important market." That statement echoes similar comments from Microsoft's Phil Spencer, who said back in 2008 that the company "remain committed to the strategy for success in Japan." And look how well that worked out.

Microsoft previously announced that other Asian countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and India, won't get the Xbox One until "late 2014." Today's indication that Japan's launch "won't be delayed too much" suggests that the country will get the system well ahead of the mainland continent, so Japanese gamers can consider that a bit of a silver lining.

As mentioned in the article, Asia can care less about M$ but its interesting that Xbone isn't even looking to compete at launch over there. . . Looks like Mattrick wasn't the only one making bad decisions at M$.

I think that's not a bad decision. Why would you spend/waste money to make consoles for a country where almost no one would buy the console. I mean you wouldn't sell steak in an area with only vegetarians ;)

And the Xbox One isn't region locked anymore, so anyone who wants that console in Asia could just order it from abroad.

This

Sony/Nintendo dominate in Japan. MS wouldn't been able to reach that level over there as much as they could try.

If you are going to make a thread about Xbox one at least call it by it's proper name instead of been childish calling it "Xbone" on the title.

And if you're going to go out of your way to correct me on the console's name than at least be grammatically correct . . .It's Xbox One, Mr. Maturity! :P

Nevermind, I prefer Xbone.

Btw, in related news, Xbone is returning to the Tokyo Game Show. It'll be interesting to see how the system is presented there, especially since it is launching there next year.

Is it childish to call it the Xbone? I use it as an abbreviation for Xbox One in the same way I abbreviate PlayStation 4 to PS4. Frankly, I think Xbone sounds better than Xbox One anyways. I'm curious to know what you think is a better abbreviation for the system.

XBOne would be better than the XBone lol XBone sounds like a dodgy 70's pornstar in my opinion

I think its just the way people write it just needs a capitol O in One not one

XBOne doesn't work because you don't capitalize the "b" on Xbox and XbOne looks stupid. I still think Xbone looks the best and sounding like a 70's pornstar is a plus in my opinion.

Don't forget that Sony launched the Vita in japan and didn't bring it to NA until the next year so this could be the similar thing. Why would MS spend a bunch of money on japan when in the past it hasn't proven a fruitful experience.

Remember despite 360s terrible Asian presence it is still able to maintain the same sales as the PS3 so it only makes sense to concentrate where those sales are guaranteed and then go after the Asian market a little later on.
