It's been a few months, so time for an update! Last time around I was on 17 completed genres, but I've managed to move up to 25. Over halfway now but my remaining genres will be much harder to find ultra rares for.

Oh snap, would you look at that. Well that's good news for anyone with OCD that really wants to do every genre no matter what. It'll still be optional, but its great to know there's an open option for it.

Oh man, Switchblade looks doable but also really scares me to start. The Steam version was taken off the store completely in 2020 and I guess they just haven't bothered taking down the PS4 version.

 

Edit: I poked through the discord server and it doesn't seem like there are any imminent plans to shut the game down. So it seems safe, for now.

I consider myself a variety gamer, I like to try different genres, not only for the video game culture but also for the challenge and to discover my limits when going for a platinum. Some personal details when I created my list:

• I already have multiple games completed for some of these genres, so I just chose one to add.

• Not only I'm going for the platinum, but also for the 100%.

• I've filled the genres I'm missing with the games I'll probably go for. Some of these might change, in case something better comes up.

• Most of the games have very rare/ultra rare platinums.

• If we are talking about genres and variety, it would only make sense to have at least 1 game of each console/platform. This includes PS3, PS4, PS5, PS Vita, PS VR2 and Playlink (smartphones). I'm going to open an exception for PS VR and only play the most recent one.

 

This challenge might take me at least 1 or 2 years to complete, but I won't forget it! I will keep updating the list until I finish everything.

Also, I accept suggestions for the ones I don't know yet below.

UPDATE 1

Almost 3 months after joining this challenge I finally have my 1st update. I completed 3 new categories and have now 10 left.

 

The categories were Pinball, Point-and-click and Romance. I had a very difficult time choosing which games to play for these categories because I'm very picky and I didn't have many games that interested me.

 

For Pinball I decided to go with "SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics". The only reason why this game is registered as a Pinball game is because of the Sonic Spinball, which I played for like 20 minutes. Overall I'm still satisfied with this choice. All the other Pinball games in PSNProfiles either don't have a platinum or are games with a 1/10 difficulty and take 1 or 2 hours, which is not challenging at all.

This game is a collection of more than 50 titles across all genres (kinda fitting for this challenge haha) from all-time classics from the old Sega console. I never played games in that era so I don't have any nostalgia but overall I discovered that I really enjoy Sonic, Streets of Rage and Turn-based combat gameplay so that's a big W.

 

Point-and-click games are basically 1/10 games, so I just had to go with something. I chose Grim Fandango based on reviews and number of owners. Honestly, I didn't enjoy it that much...the game is basically impossible to finish without a guide, some things are really weird and don't make sense. The story is too deep and for a first game of the Genre I should I've picked something more familiar like Batman Telltale Series. My journey was basically following or should I say copying a 5-hour youtube video from beggining to end, so it was a different experience for me.

 

My choice for Romance was Life is Strange: True Colors. It has a PS5 version, it is available on PS Extra and I heard some good things about it so I gave it a shot. The game is basically a Drama movie, it has a lot of quality and I can see why people enjoy it BUT it's just not made for me. It's not the type of game that makes me want to login to continue and that's ok. 

 

In general, I learned more about what I like and don't like.

Firstly, I'm pretty convinced I'll do the games marked in yellow. For TBS I had Sea of Stars but I decided to trade it with SteamWorld Heist since it's a little bit faster to complete... just in case I don't enjoy this type of gameplay as much as I'm hoping. If I do, then I'll definitely play Sea of Stars in the future as well.

 

For Educational and RTS, I really need some suggestions... nothing from PSNProfiles interested me.

Can anyone explain me how to do a research in the IGDB API? I can't seem to figure it out... maybe I'll find something better there.

 

@Copanele you suggested "Grand Ages Medieval". Is that game really worth the time?

 

@Rebourne07 I've a question, if I play the PS Vita Minecraft version does it count as 4X? The PS3 and PS4 are registered as that, but the Vita one isn't.

Honestly I enjoyed it, it had rather easy trophies too considering how painful economy sims usually are.

But uh...if you dislike those types of games...Grand Ages Medieval won't magically change your opinion unfortunately 😅
