Dragon-Archon
Happy New Year everyone, got the first plat of 2017 today: #149: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 January 1 2017 This is a fun game and I liked it a lot, except for the money grind (more about that later). I used the free Fairy Fencer F DLC to quickly get everyone to lvl 99. With a full Tera processor set those enemies do 0 damage in HDD form and Neptune gets an OP sword as a reward (it's far better than her ultimate weapon). For the credits I got a credit disc and the credit plan. With those Clione gave around 332,200 credits. With a party of Neptune, Vert, and MAGES. I could defeat Clione within 15 seconds. This was by far the fastest method to farm credits. Still took about 128 fights to get to 50 million. Then I bought and sold the most expensive clothing over and over to get to 100 million. I really don't get why this trophy was in the list as it has no purpose, just like with Diablo III. Besides the money grind this is a very enjoyable game. The story was nice, the humour is great, and I like how often the fourth wall is broken. I also created all optional dungeons and did all Colosseum fights to get all the best weapons for everyone. Though it took me a long time to realize there was a plan that added more fights to the Colosseum . The best character is hands down MAGES. I like all the Steins;Gate references and that banter with Noire being her assistant (she's voiced by the same actress that voiced Kurisu). Finding Kurisiu's outfit in the game was a great surprise too. Too bad I had to replace the witch hat with an invisible hat for some boosted intelligence during the Clione grind, though I did give Vert one .

Yep, there may be another one coming soon .
Popular Post Dragon-Archon
#150: Sword Art Online Hollow Fragment January 1 2017 This game has an alternate story and takes place shortly after beating floor 75 in Aincrad. When Kirito won the duel, the game didn't end. Instead they all have to clear the remaining 25 floors to end it. This game depicts the floor-clearing aspect well and also has a MMO feel to it. To clear a floor players need to explore it first, then find the boss room. Along the way they can also gather information about the boss, which will help NPCs during the boss raid. It's also possible to help NPCs when they send a request to help them level up. During a boss raid 6 NPCs will fight with Kirito and whoever he partners up with. Keeping all of them alive during all 25 floors is challenging at first, but becomes much easier after Kirito has leveled up a bit and learned OSS combos (chaining sword skills), but more about that later. Floor bosses also have a last hit bonus, meaning the the one who kills the boss gets a unique piece of equipment. There's also a trophy for getting them all. Besides Aincrad, there's the Hollow Area. This is a testing area that was used to test stuff for the main game and has its own story mode. After completing it, Phillia can move to Aincrad and will be available when clearing floors. The Hollow Area also has a mechanic called implements. These are basically items, equipment, and skills that Kirito can test. Once the tests are complete, they can be implemented into the game and will be available to use freely in Aincrad and the Hollow Area. The idea behind this is great, but they're way too grindy. Completing 100 out of 114 takes a long time. To make things worse, implements can only be tested during a Hollow Mission. These are timed missions that appear in the Hollow Area and requires players to beat certain enemies or reach a specific place before the timer runs out. These missions respawn after a certain time and can be done over and over. Doing 80 unique Hollow Missions is quite a lot, so keeping a checklist is recommended. Of course I didn't do that at first. Also on the Vita version the Hollow Missions in the Discard Area (which was added to the Hollow Area in a patch) don't count for the trophy, so I had to do about 23 Hollow Missions in the other 5 areas. Another grindy trophy is to kill 100 Hollow Named Monsters (HNM). These only spawn when an area rank has reached lvl 3 and are stronger versions of bosses from the Hollow Area. An area rank will increase when doing Hollow Missions. Killing 100 is a bit too much, but it wasn't so bad. It's also a great opportunity to work on implements. The last (and IMO the worst) grind are the affection trophies. Every main heroine needs to have a maxed out affection. There are several ways to do that: talk to them or spam Good during fights. I used the latter until they were lvl 4, then talked to them for 90 minutes to 2 hours to get them to level 5. This had to be done for Asuna, Phillia, Strea, Leafa, Sinon, Lisbeth, and Silica. The combat system is nicely done too. At first it seems very simple to attack, use a buff or sword skill, dodge, and parry. But the more you play, the more mechanics will be discovered. For example timing dodges/parries will result in bonuses. fighting styles and sword skills also level up through usage. Later it becomes possible to create an Original Sword Skill (OSS). Chaining sword skills will increase the damage for the next sword skill, provided sword skills aren't used more than once during the combo. Using a finisher skill ends the combo immediately and these can get a 300% increase in damage. Doing the Grand Quest in the Discard Area also rewards Kirito and his partner with an OP sword skill finisher depending on the weapon he has equipped. This one is very useful when defeating floor bosses and HNMs. Kirito can equip a variety of weapons and my favourites are dual-wielding, rapier, and katana. Dual-wield does lots of damage against single enemies, rapier has fast attacks, and the katana has lots of AoE skills to deal with mobs. After completing the Grand Quest, the Ultra Hard Quest becomes available. There are 9 quests to defeat extremely powerful bosses and getting the last hit bonus on them rewards a legendary weapon. There's one weapon for each fighting style. All in all this game is a perfect adaptation of the anime and if you like that, you'll like this game. It's quite a time sink, so people who haven't seen or don't like the anime should think twice before getting it.
Popular Post Dragon-Archon
#151: Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix January 5 2017 This is also a game that I've played dozens of times before on the PS2, so this time around I started immediately on Critical Mode. The start of the game was the hardest part, because Sora was underleveled most of the time and he didn't have that many abilities yet. Luckily, Critical Mode gives some starting abilities and increases damage inflicted with 25%. Of these abilities the 2 Lucky, Lucky are the most useful ones. Those increase the drop rate of items and synthesis materials. Having no means to dodge until getting the Wisdom Form to lvl 3 was certainly a great handicap (that form is acquired roughly 25% into the the story). I was thrilled to fight the new boss in The World That Never Was and went in completely blind .... and got destroyed the first two times . During the third time I started getting familiar to the patterns and during the fourth try there was a QTE, beating it gave sora control over three keyblades, which completely destroyed the boss. Xaldin was still the hardest boss in the story and Saïx seemed to be nerfed down a bit. After getting Limit Form, the game becomes so much easier. That form has an ability that heals Sora when using a limit and Sonic Blade grants lots of invincibility and can stagger enemies + bosses easily. The exception are the 15 OP post-game bosses (Sephiroth, Lingering Will and the Organization XIII data fights). These required lots of trial and error to get familiar with the new attack patterns. Out of the data battles, Xaldin was still the hardest one (yay for consistency ). I'm also glad to never have to do Mushroom 8 and 10 again. The puzzles are a nice addition: they reward good items and you also get great artwork.
CediFonei
You already had it in the bag, but it deserves a formal statement now that you have the actual plat; CONGRATS ON COMPLETING KINGDOM HEARTS II! That game means a lot to me as a transitional game of sorts during my childhood, helping me open up my willingness to try out less familiar games (blame Didney) and think more broadly on what games are capable of doing. With 2.8 coming out later this month, there wasn't a better time for you to get that! And who knows, maybe 0.2 will be smol enough for me to actually 100% complete myself...? >w>

Popular Post Dragon-Archon
#152: Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix February 26 2017 Finally a KH game that's completely new for me. This game takes place 10 years before KH1 and focuses on Terra, Ventus, and Aqua as they travel the worlds to restore the balance between light and dark. You can only play as 1 character at a time and to switch to another one, it's necessary to start a new game. All 3 stories must be completed to get the entire picture and each character has different events in each world, while the story converges in some small cutscenes and a few fights. Each character plays different, so they don't feel like clones with different skins. Terra is a tanky guy with higher hp and attack stats, his finisher gauge fills quicker, though he's also slow and has a terrible dodge. In fact, calling it a dodge is just insulting, it's basically a slide, as enemies can still hit him while sliding. Ventus is very agile and I'd describe him as a rogue class. He can attack very fast and dodge away too before most enemy attacks hit him. Aqua is the mage and is very proficient in magic, though does very little physical damage at the start. She has some amazing exclusive spells that tear through enemy groups with ease. I like the combat system in this game a lot. Magic and special attacks are placed in a deck and can be used after they've cooldown. With a bit of knowledge of the commands and abilities, it's possible to get strong commands and helpful abilities early in the game by melding them together. This makes Critical mode a lot easier compared to KH2, where the start is arguably the hardest part due to the lack of special attacks and abilities. Shotlocks are also a new mechanism, which are very powerful. These attacks lock on to enemies and with timed presses, it's possible to do additional damage. The third new mechanism are Dimension Links, which replace Drive Forms from KH2. Activating a D-Link completely heals you and gives you access to a set amount of commands. Leveling up a D-Link adds new commands and a new finisher. Some things I didn't like was how the stories in each world was so short (as it's divided between 3 characters). Another thing I really disliked was completing the reports with all 3 characters. This basically means getting a 100% completion trice, which is a completely pointless grind. So doing all mini-games (and there are a lot), arena matches, beating all optional bosses, getting all treasure chests, commands, shotlocks, items, and command styles, defeating every Unversed, beating every Unversed Battle Mission with the highest rank, getting and maxing out every D-Link, unlocking all finishers, and using every shotlock and D-Link finisher. This easily adds lots of hours of pointless grinding. The optional boss Mysterious Figure is also a huge disappointment as Square Enix made it a luck-based boss for Terra and his crappy dodge. With the other 2 characters it's doable in 30 minutes. Though he has an insta-death move where a countdown timer appears. It starts at 5 ticks and when it reaches 0, it's game over. Mashing will break you free. This doesn't sound so bad, but the kicker is that the maximum amount of ticks decreases by 1 every time you get hit by it. It generally takes 3 ticks to break free, though it's possible to do it in 2 when mashing the controller a lot. Besides that, he can split into 5 clones, become invisible, throw dozens of orbs that auto-attacks the player, drop huge meteors, shoot exploding orbs of fire, stop time for players while he moves, and heal. Oh and once he turns invisible he combines lots of attacks. So yeah, a terribly broken boss.
