Sunset Overdrive has proven it’s a rude game with attitude. From the mohawk-sporting protagonist to the energy drink hawking Fizzie, Sunset Overdrive is extreme to the max and it doesn’t care who knows it. Case in point, the game’s official Twitter today called out Sony for utilizing it’s font in a current horror themed Halloween sale on the PlayStation Store, stating:

Hey @Playstation. Nice font. Glad you guys are excited for @SunsetOverdrive too. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B0fVf5jIIAAgtVD.jpg:large

Shots fired. Considering this jab come from a company once synonymous with the PlayStation brand, perhaps there is bad blood in the water.

Here’s the Sunset Overdrive font and PSN sale font for comparison:

Hope this doesn't affect future Ratchet & Clank games on PS4...

Lol, I love Insomniac. Not only do they find a way to take the piss out of someone but get a bunch of free advertising for their game as people post this tweet around.

I so wish this game was coming to playstation because this is one company I try to support as much as possible

I'm a big fan of Insomniac as well but honestly I'm not really interested in Sunset Overdrive. All the gameplay videos and trailers I've seen make it look like a stylistic but generic third person shooter and I have other things I'd rather play. When it hits the bargain bin it may find its way to my Xbone.

Yeah, this seems like a little humorous jab to me, of course gaming websites are going to put a negative spin on it in order to get views though. I highly doubt Insomniac nor Sony are upset about this.

It doesn't need a negative spin on the story. Just copy and paste this thread's title into the article's title and it's off to the comments section we go! :shakefist::blah:

That is what happened with FUSE for me. I bought it for 19.99 during a sale. If I had bought it full price I would have been pissed, but for 20$ I was very happy. Sunset Overdrive is probably the same thing.

The thing is so many games (especially on Xbox) are trying to be so serious that when a 'fun' game comes around I tend to get excited.

Too bad everyone can use it for whatever they want. Meh

That's not how it works, Ben.

See, that font you linked is a fan made product, based on the font created for the title of Sunset Overdrive [iE: The logo of Sunset Overdrive is not actually a "typeface", it was created specifically for the logo.]

The only reason it's free, is because they wouldn't be allowed to actually sell it - not without permission from Insomniac.

It being free, also doesn't mean "You can use it for whatever you want" - generally, it means "You can use it for whatever you want, so long as you don't make money off of it, unless otherwise stated."

Now, while there's nothing on the dafont site, or Andrew McCluskey's own site, saying you have to pay for a commercial license - it's a font based on a copyrighted logo. You can't just use it for commercial things. If Insomniac wanted to, they actually could sue Sony for it.

However, it seems they don't actually care, and instead, are just poking fun at them using it, which gives them publicity for the title. It could also be because Sony isn't directly making money on the use of the font itself, so they've skirted by any actual licensing issues.

Whoa there Bucko. I know how it works but thanks for trying. It wasnt really the point I was trying to make.

when they realize its not selling as well as they thought it was going to on the Xone, 2 will be on PS4, since Insomniac has full control of the IP, just like Titanfall.

From what I understand it is Sony's fault for Insomniac taking the game over to Microsoft. Apparently, Insomniac pitched the IP to Sony and Sony liked it but they wanted rights to the IP. Insomniac said they wanted the rights, Sony said no so Insomniac went to Microsoft who allowed them to keep the rights.

Whether that is 100% true or not, I suppose we'll never really know.

I think you are right about that, im not too excited to play S.O. at least not on day one, ill still be busy with tons of other games that i am actually interested in, Insomniac needs this game to be a hit... i think it might be, but then again i dont know.

I don't really see anything salty about that Tweet. Seems more like friendly joking to me.

Agreed. If they wanted a lawsuit, they wouldn't have started with Twitter.

If they were looking for publicity, on the other hand, they handled it perfectly. In the days where we have shows about people who are famous simply for being famous, Tweets like this count as "News" and spread quickly.

Another reason why they need to make more Conker, Banjo, Kameo and Perfect Dark games. God damn, Mircosoft, put Rare to better use!

MS recently said they are putting Rare to work on something not kinect related...so it could be anything at this point. I just hope its not something stupid like Avatars 2.0

Or make a crappy spin-off like Nuts and Bolts. I swear, ever since Rare was brought, their games just weren't the same anymore... :(

Oh, and on topic, I feel as though Sony should of known better. >_> But like most people had said, I guess it's not a big deal...

Somebody at Sony probably called somebody at Insomniac before making that jpeg and said something like "We wanna use that font for our next promotion. We cool?"

Just to be on the safe side.
