Popular Post Mendant909
Game #8 Day 1 The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel begins in media res with teenagers and their teachers going into a battlefield. There are corpses lying about and surprisingly there's blood. I saw more blood in that opening scene than I have in all of the Tales of games I played, so kudos on showing some brutality of war. After battling a few robots the gang is unable to stop giant cannons from being fired and the screen goes white as the leader yells in frustration. The game then rewinds five months earlier and formally introduces the members of the newly established Class VII of Thors Military Academy, along with a proper tutorial of the game mechanics. That in media res section was infuriating as only knew the teachers were fighting alonside thier students and that cannons needed to be stopped. There was the option to use ultimate attacks but I had to press several buttons to figure out what each did, making me wonder what was the purpose of the beginning if we don't have proper context for the occasion or are later given a proper tutorial of the mechanics. Class VII is special in that it ignores the social class of the individual members and prioritizes their capability of combat linking, which appears to be being able to link attacks with your partners. Class VII represents two major themes that the game has brought up so far: the modernization of the military through machinery and the conflict between the noble class and the common people. The former interests me as it's a parallel to Europe before World War I, with machines having advanced to inflict massive carnage yet tactics that are outdated to combat it. Maybe the game will follow a similar path to that, questioning the usage of machines if people aren't willing to adapt to new scenarios, with magic added because it. As for class conflict, that's the basis for the Erebonian Empire as there are four noble families that own a region of the land, with one son of those powerful nobles coming into conflict with a fellow student who believes nobles just inherit their livelihood rather than work for it. Hopefully the game will build up these themes as there's a lot of talking, but it's in service of building the world and building character. Combat consists of a party of four being in a circle with various enemies and fighting them with a turn-based system. The main selling point of this game from other JRPGs is the importance of where characters are in that circle. Characters can only attack from a certain range, so you'll have to decide if you want to get your characters close to a group of enemies to perform an AoE attack, giving a risk-reward system with the combat. That so far sticks out to me as the key difference from most other JRPGs but I'll have to play a bit more to see what benefit combat linking has and how ultimate attacks work. Another mechanic available after twenty minutes of the proper prologue is the Quartz system. Basically you put certain gems into your morpher and that dictates what magic you'll use and what stat benefits you'll like. It seems that the more you use them the stronger they'll get, so this should sound familiar to veteran Final Fantasy players. One last combat mechanic I took note of is how monsters are encountered with as enemies on the field are stunned by certain weapons, so you'll have to try out which weapons would give you a head start before a battle. So far the game seems alright, with lots of talking that actually has purpose behind it. I'll try to finish the first proper chapter during the weekend, hopefully before Sunday evening. I was reminded of the Final Deletion as the word "dilapidated" was used, even though it had nothing to do with a boat. It does make me wonder how that word has become obscure.
Popular Post MStalker58
Fallout 3 Day 1 Trophies: 3/73 (2%) So I dig through my backlog in search of Fallout 3, rip off the plastic, get that new game smell that eff loves, and it's time to start my next game. Got a surprise when I realized this was another GOTY version that I had forgotten about buying. Comes with all of the DLC and there is a crapload of them. Appears to be at least 5 different DLC's with 22 extra trophies. This looks like another game that could keep me busy for quite a while. Much like the Souls franchise earlier, I had never played a Fallout game before this event. During my brief time with Fallout 3, it didn't take long before I started wondering why in the world it took me so long to play one of these games. For those unfamiliar with the game, it is set in a post-apocalyptic world that was ravaged by nuclear war. Not the most original setting I know, but I have a feeling this one is going to be special and unique. Sometimes, I feel like developers just use a post-apocalypse world as an excuse to get by with barren and empty worlds that don't require much detail. That doesn't appear to be the case with Fallout 3. From the start, I got a Bioshock-like vibe from certain parts of the game. Not in terms of gameplay or mechanics, but just the music, posters, and attention to detail in the world. I can't wait to explore it all. Our character is part of the community living in Vault 101. This was a shelter when the wars started, but the vault doors have remained sealed long after the war ended. I was born here and have been told that I will die here because nobody has ever left the vault. So we begin the game by witnessing the birth of our character. This was basically the part where you select if your character is a boy/girl, customize your appearance and build. I thought this was a cool way to do the customization and tutorial stages. In most games, you pick your information and then you start off as a middle-aged character dropped into the world. This way, you actually get to see some of the roots of your character. After my birth, we flashed forward to my 10th birthday party where I got my very own Pip-Boy and a BB Gun to use for target practice. Also met a total d-bag kid named Butch. I usually try to play the nice guy when given a choice in games, but I have a feeling this dick is going to make that hard. Next up we are 16 years old and it's time to take the G.O.A.T test to identify what job we are best suited for in the Vault. The test said I was going to be the next Vault Chaplain. Haha, yeah right. Oh yeah, turns out Butch and his buddies have formed a gang called the "Tunnel Snakes" and they are still tools. How shocking. These missions or scenes weren't very long but they provided an interesting glimpse into the background of our character and Vault 101. Finally it's time to actually start the main portion of the game. I wake up to emergency alarms going off and my friend Amata, the daughter of the Overseer, warning me that my father had left the Vault and that the Overseer was sending guards after me. It was time to make my escape. Along the way I killed some giant cockroaches and had to save that d-bag Butch's mother because he was too scared of the dark to do it himself. Was so tempted to tell him to f@ck off. After that it was off to confront the Overseer and obtain his keys and password to open the tunnels and exit the vault. I decided to stop for the day as I took my first steps onto the surface. Nothing like smelling fresh air with a hint of radiation for the very first time. voodoo_eyes
Fallout 3 That game was fantastic and it only crashed very rarely for me. I bought it when it got released, and only got the dlc last year on a sale. To my demise, it seems I have deleted all my save files.. . So I'll have to go back to go through it again at some point .
Popular Post crimsonidol38
Game #8:htoL#NiQ -The Firefly Diary- () Some random tidbits beforehand: When the game was announced back in 2014 I totally liked the main-character's styleand once I read it would be a puzzle-platformer I had to think of games like Dokuro which I really liked. I decided to pre-order the limited retail. Didn't play the game as I wanted to play it a bit later and then NIS decided to release the game in the west (download-only for Europe). On addition to that I heard that, even though the game barely contains any text, has a boss battle that requires you to answer a quiz with a time limit given. Ehm, great? I'm not able to read japanese. How should I be able answer that? I decided to switch to the download-version of the game. I only bought in during a sale, though. About the game itself: Hotaru no Nikki is a puzzle-platformer by NIS as some may now. The game features the character Mion which awakens in a dystopian like area. The girl is greated by a firefly named Lumen and your goal is, ehm, what is it exactly? Don't know as it's not told by the game. The only thing you get to know is that you have to leave the room. But you don't have direct control over Mion. Instead you have to move Lumen via touch-based controls and Mion will follow him/her/whatever. You can interact with Mion or the environment by tapping on them. If Lumen is above Mion and you tap her, she will wait and not move any further which gives you the possibility to fly around. if you are above an interactive object like a switch and tap on it, Mion will move it. Climbing ladders or moving boxes is done by pressing in the concrete direction. With all these possibilities you have to maneuver through the stages which contain several hazards. Some of them are enemies which are only placed in the shadows. When those enemies reach Mion's shadow she will be killed and you have to restart from the last checkpoint. The same applies for other obstacles like spike traps, boulders or dangerous fluids. While traversing the levels it's possible to find saplings. Once Mion reaches them a flashback will be triggered and you get to see some of Mion's memories, which seem to feature her parents or creators. In Stage 1-2 the game also introduced another firefly: Umbra. As you may guess from the name this firefly is related to the shadow realm and can be activated by tapping and moved by using the rear touchpad. With Umbra you are able to perform several other actions to clear the path for Mion. Some examples include the possibility to cut wires or activate hidden switches. Unlike Lumen Umbra can't move freely though. Instead she's limited to the shadows. But it's possible and required to alter the shadows with Lumen to create a way for Umbra. Generally speaking the game has some nice ideas but also a huge drawback:Mion is slooooooooooow and it takes some time to get the proper action done. Especially moving boxes is quite annoying. It's also some tedious work to align Mion, Lumen, or Umbra properly to solve the puzzles with the touch controls feel somehow unresponsive. And I'm already using a touch pen. As I was desperate I looked online if there's a way to alter the controls and luckily there is. If you tap on one of the arrows in the game's option menu you come to a menu which offers you to switch controls. Two of the three schemes are still using the touchpads but the third scheme offers analog stick and button-controls. Sweet Jesus, thank you! The controls are still a bit clunky but much better than the touch-based. So far the game is again one of those I'm not fond of. The game reminds me too much of Murasaki Baby and that was a big disappointment for me. Main reason for the comparison is the fact that you have to rely heavily on the AI's intelligence to do the proper action in both games. I hope this games get a bit better but I read that the biggest PITA already awaits me (some mazes). Edited July 23, 2016 by Crimson Idol
Popular Post Hemiak
Game 7Echochrome - Purchased 3/20/2015, ~$.91Update 1, 45 min played.Well, I was hoping to get a bit more time before my first update, but it just didn't happen. Yesterday my kids wanted a to camp out in the backyard so once I did my paperwork I went out to sleep with them and didn't play at all.I purchased this game last year for like 1 or 2 bucks, and then got it free on plus this year before I ever played it. :/ to start, I really really like puzzles, and I definitely it way enjoy well made puzzle game. This isn't the best game I've played by any means but it's still enjoyable so far. Like Stalker said, the menus are a bitch to navigate. Even being forwarned it took me a couple minutes to figure out where to go. (Atelier, then hit R1 to cycle from user generated, to built in levels... ) why?So you take control of a little marionette guy, who walks through the level under til he hits an ubstruction, hole, or bounce pad. He will then turn around and continue, fall through the hole, or jump. You have to rotate the MC Escher design so your person lands safely on another level. Each level begins with 3+ 'echoes', which are shadows of your person, scattered throughout the level. Once you collect all of them, one extra echo appears that you have to obtain to end the level. It's really hard to explain it as Stalker said, you use perspective to hide gaps or holes, because if you can't see it it's not there. You can also make it appear that two separate surfaces blend into each other so you can cross.I finished all 8 of the A tracks, and the first 2 B tracks. I haven't earned a trophy yet. More to come. MesopithecusUK
Fallout 3 Day 1 Trophies: 3/73 (2%) I played Fallout 3 last November and I enjoyed every minute of it Like voodoo_eyes, I didn't have any trouble with the game crashing (apart from in one of the DLCs) Been meaning to fire up New Vegas at some point. Speaking of that new game smell, I feel very disappointed with PS4 games as they don't quite have the same delightful new game smell as PS3 games. Hemiak
Fallout 3 I really loved both Fallout games. 3 > NVThey get a bad rap for being buggy, which they are, but if you keep a few things in mind they're manageable. Leap frog 2 or 3 saves. That way if you get stuck in an area that constantly freezes you can hopefully work around it. Finish the main game before doing (or even installing) the DLC. One of the DLC packs can permanently glitch an important side quest. I don't think it would stop you from finishing the game, but you'd definitely have to start over to get back to that point. The world is persistent like Skyrim. Every time you kill something, pick up, or move an object the game has to remember it. What that means is your save is constantly growing, thus taking up more and more Ram, and causing even more problems. It might be better to make an early branch save so you can finish the story and maybe a DLC, and then revert to the early save to do the rest of the DLC without your save becoming ginormous. All in all its an amazing game, and it really captured my imagination. I only had one or two issues in my whole 2 runs but I never played any of the DLC. crimsonidol38
Just wanted to say thank you for the kind words. I took voodoo_eyes advice and have been playing on my USA account, just to relax and unwind and hide away from the world for a while. With the money I won in The Lottery event, I put it towards getting Odin Sphere (my husband funded the difference) and I've been having an absolute blast on it. May even play Dragon's Crown after as a result. Your sig. I see that you like the combo Velvet + Cornelius, too. Can't wait to hear your thoughts about the special ending.

Game 8 - Day 2 Hours played: 1 Trophies earned: 7/57 I'll wrap this one up, as I don't intend to play more of it today. I focused on doing some quests this time around, which are usually the fetch kind. Expanded the town a bit more and got one more story mission done. Now I got all characters available to me. I came across one thing that annoys the hell out of me... Enemies occasionally drop money, but like in many platformers, the coins disappear after a few seconds. I can't express how much I despise that. Busy fighting a dozen enemies, while also having to worry about picking up their shit before it disappears, Why on earth is this still a thing in games? Anyway, it's time for SOMA to creep me the fuck out some more .
Popular Post MarkusT1992
Deadpool (Day 2) I played some more of the game and it's the same as befor, nothing new. I bought a new melee weapon and a new gun, a shotgun. The new melee weapon is much faster than my first one and the shotgun inflicts way more damage. The first gun is better for normal enemies though because you can aim better at the head. The only annoying part so far is that the game has mini freezes every minute or so. I don't know if it is only my game and redownloading would fix it or if it is a general problem of the game. Maybe someone here can answer me this.

Popular Post MStalker58
Fallout 3 Day 2 Trophies: 4/73 (3%) Spent most of the day exploring and doing quests in the settlement of Megaton. The town got the name because it's built around an undetonated atomic bomb. Seems like a wise decision to me. The quests ranged from mundane tasks like fixing broken water pipes, the normal video game missions like shaking down a junkie in exchange for information from a shady saloon owner, all the way to disarming that atomic bomb in the center of town. I received a nice payday for that last one as well as my own house in Megaton. Sure, it's not a very nice house but it does come with it's own robot butler and a display for my bobblehead collection. Also did my good deed for the day when I persuaded an addict to get clean and be honest with his family. True, I just wanted him to ask me for help in "getting rid" of his stash, so I could take them all for myself. Let's not worry about the motivations behind the act though, it was still a good deed. Next up I met a woman who was coo coo for cocoa puffs. She was attempting to write a wasteland survival guide and asked for my help. Basically, she wants me to be a lab rat for her research. What was the very first task you ask? Oh, just sitting in a pool of water filled with radiation. My first instinct was to laugh in her face and tell her she's crazy. But my need to complete every side mission in a video game was stronger than the absurdity of her request so I agreed to help. I bathed and drank in the radiation until I was on the verge of death and then reported back for her to study me. Apparently I have a mutation now and it's possible that my skin now glows neon, but the mission was completed. Her next mission was much more rational and involved going on a supply run for food and medicine at a nearby supermarket. I knew that watching all of those seasons of The Walking Dead would eventually pay off. I'm the right man for the job. I make my way across the wasteland and come upon Super-Duper Mart. Unfortunately, several hitmen were waiting for me in the parking lot. It was a one sided slaughter and I was on the losing end. Luckily, next time they didn't spawn so I just had to deal with the average raiders inside of the store. At first, I was trying to sneak around but I made the mistake of knocking into some fallen shopping carts and bottles littering the floor. They made a ridiculous amount of noise so there goes the element of surprise. After clearing out the enemies, it was time to scavenge the store. There were so many supplies that I had to fast travel several times back to Megaton and store the surplus before going back for more. Good thing I got that house, because I appear to be a hoarder in this game. Edited July 24, 2016 by MStalker58
Popular Post crimsonidol38
Game #8: htoL#NiQ -The Firefly Diary- () Today I was able to finish the second chapter (the game has a total number of four) and I have to say: I'm already fed up of it. Especially level 2-3 pissed me off. Mion is unconscious during the whole level and transported via conveyor belts. To bring her to the end of the level you have to move several levers in the right moment or otherwise she get's crushed, eaten or falls right into a gap. But the worst is actually a maze you have to navigate through in the last section of that level. You have to navigate Lumen through the maze without touching the borders. It's similar to a wire loop game. The first sections were ok but the last one contained two gears which moved in opposite directions. :\ Took me quite a few tries to get this section done. On top of that this maze is tied to a trophy: Do the complete maze in one playthrough without getting killed and in a specific time. You can see the maze in the following video: (section begins at 5:32min) The biggest design flaw IMO is the fact that only the borders of this maze cause an instant death for Lumen. If he touches the dark in all other areas, nothing happens. Screw you, NIS. The boss of the second chapter was ok. You had to put some explosives right in front of him so he eats them instead of you. But you had to be cautious as the boss was able to spit fire. Biggest struggle was to find out the move to let loose the explosives (you have to move Lumen in the direction Mion's watching, then going down and move towards Mion). Final thoughts: htoL#NiQ is the third game in a row that I didn't really enjoy. Puzzle-Platformers with an escort-element aren't fun if you have to rely on an AI-character which is as slow as a tank and moves like one. I could only play this game in short sessions or otherwise it would have made me rage to much. The puzzles of the game are ok but rely too much on trial and error IMO. It's no surprise that this game has two trophies for dying a specific amount of times (one for 10 times, one for 100 times). I will for sure try to finish the game sometime but similar to Monkey Island it's on the bottom of the priority list. Stats:Total playing time: ~3 hoursTrophies earned: 9 / 25Completion rate: 25%Rank: CDid the game lower my completion? Yes Let's see what tomorrow will bring. Could be a fun ride with Love Live. Popular Post effdeegee
July 22-24 Racquet Sports Trophies: +6/35 (7,626 - 7,631) I'll be honest; with the way the last three days have been going, you guys are lucky I even touched the case.Having pretty serious issues at work, the weather has been absolutely ridiculous (+30C one moment, and torrential downpour with thunder and lightning moments later, on and off for the whole weekend), surprise co-op gaming sessions, and I've been sick as a dog. I only played the game for a whopping 33 minutes, but managed to score 6 fairly easy trophies.Pardon the pun, but this game is the definition of "hit or miss." Sometimes you think it's the most accurate game ever made, going, "Wow. The game actually recognized that I twisted my wrist on that shot!" and many other times you're left thinking, "How the hell can you possibly think that THAT swing meant for the ball to go over THERE?!" Yet another Ubisoft Move game without Uplay points, so kinda bummed about that, too. Anywho. It's pretty fun, but the platinum rarity is certainly there for a reason. Broken controls that repeatedly call for precision = stab fork in own eye sockets. But yeah, fun stuff.

Noticed you have got I Am Setsuna on your list, which is one I also want but need to wait for it to come down in price a little. Can't comment on Oreshika (I know it's on my account but my girlfriend played that). IMO both Adventures of Mana and Hyperdimension are nice to play. Neptunia is a light-hearted JRPG-series and if you don't mind fighting Visual Novel-screens, Tetrominos or other obscure enemies it's a nice variation from other JRPGs as it also has a nice, action-orientned battle system IMO. But you must be aware of the fact that you shouldn't take the game's story serious. Adventures of Mana on the other hand is a nice trip down memory lane. It's rather simple gameplay-wise and the story is near to non-existent but the biggest plus of this game is the music. And you are able to experience the roots of the Mana-series. I Am Setsuna still needs to be played but it has to wait for a bit. After this event is over I want to focus on Wild Arms 3 as I want to plat that first. But I Am Setsuna is already in the pipeline, like many some other games. (Hyper Light Drifter and Abzû ),

(Hyper Light Drifter and Abzû ), I'm thinking I may go with Adventures of Mana - my plan is to have a game on each system on the go, gives me enough variety to keep me interested. I'm currently right on the verge of pre-ordering Abzû, it looks amazing
