Honor_Hand Posted August 9, 2018 Share Posted August 9, 2018 Like 2-3 weeks ago (or probably more... can't remember) I finished watching C³ (CubexCursedxCurious) and now is when I get the time to write about it. How cool is that? Isn't procrastinating things great? Anyways... C³ (CubexCursedxCurious) - (2011) Learned about this one thanks to @Leon Castle who recommended this series to me on the basis that it was published by ASCII Media Works and Dengeki Bunko, both companies from which I have enjoyed a number of other works in the past. Now, C³ was a rather interesting watch to me as I enjoyed both the characters and the setting of the story even if, by the end of the series, it felt extremely underdeveloped compared to other works. Haruaki (our main male character) is somehow resistant to all forms of curses and the story begins when his father one day sends him a black cube. This cube ends up being a kawaii anime girl who also happens to be a dark torture instrument destined to instill fear in the hearts of all humans since ages ago. Who wouldn't love a cute girl with an exceedingly dark past? ... Right? Fear Kubrick is the name of our little kawaii/evil cube. I actually liked the stark contrast of Fear's overly cutesy personality when living with Haruaki and those moments when she turned into something much more akin to a psychopathic murderer. Just seeing blood would immediately turn Fear into something much more like a monster with all sort of twisted facial expressions. Quite a contrast from the girl with the cute little fang that was eating rice cookies just minutes ago. Other dark tools eventually make their appearance in the series, either by trying to take Fear for their organizations (or to simply destroy her) or just by simple joining our protagonists for reasons that are never clearly explained. The rest of the series revolves around our main set of characters getting involved with these dangerous organizations and other Cursed Tools while in the meantime trying to help lift Fear's curse. The character designs were pretty appropriate for an action - harem series, the fights were reasonably animated, the music was pretty good (especially the first OP) and the ecchi moments were carefully and tastefully delivered. The main issue with the series is how undeveloped it feels. You have a nice set of characters and a great premise but it is as if they felt that they weren't going to last much, so everything feels rather incomplete by the end. Many of the motivations for some of the antagonists are never explained and the series just ends in a rather inconclusive way. If there was a 2nd season, I'd definitely watch it and I'm not saying that due to the fanservice but mostly because I thought the premise was cool... even if it was never developed fully. Besides C³, I also watched: Kimi no Na wa - Your Name (2016) I mean... really, what can I say about this movie that hasn't been said about it already? Maybe I can talk about its ridiculously good animation, or maybe about the high attention to detail in each and every background, or just maybe, about the fully-touching-even-on-a-personal-level songs used throughout the movie? There is really very little to not like about this movie. Wait, actually there is maybe something but more on that later. Your Name tells us a story of youth love with a really interesting catch you see. We have Mitsuha on one side, a young high school girl who lives in a mountainous region of rural Japan and, on the other side, we have Taki, a high school boy who lives in the densely urbanized area of Tokyo. What is interesting here is that somehow, both of them are able to switch bodies with one another when they go to sleep. This, initially, led to many interesting situations for both characters as they try to change aspects of the life of one another while the body switching is active. For example, Taki tries to help Mitsuha to become more popular in school and Mitsuha gets Taki involved in a relationship with a co-worker at the site he works in. Eventually, though, the body switching comes to an end and with it, many of the memories of Mitsuha start to slowly fade away from Taki's mind. The rest of the movie then goes on about Taki trying to reunite with Mitsuha and to find out why the body switching was taking place to begin with. I really cannot say more at this point because otherwise, I'd be spoiling major plot details from the movie. Now, as far as presentation goes, this movie is pretty much a masterpiece with a careful attention to detail on each and every frame, looking absolutely beautiful and well animated. The story is thought-provoking, interesting, well laid out with believable characters that deliver great lines and with a heart-warming ending. One quick note though, and this is my only minor complaint with the movie is that the romance itself, while it plays an integral part on the motivation of both main characters to meet one another, isn't really laid out extensively during the movie. With this I mean, that there was a lack of a more intimate interaction between the main characters for the romance to grow properly. The context is great and the motivations are real, my point being that it lacked a bit more of development on this part. Maybe it was due to lack of funds or lack of screentime (considering it is a movie) but It left me feeling as if it could have been developed more thoroughly. All in all, the ideas are excellent carried through and with such a top-notch presentation and delivery, it is hard not to recommend this movie as a must watch, whether if you are an anime fan or not.
