Popular Post Cave Johnson
Hidamari Sketch x 365, x ☆☆☆ (Hoshimittsu), x SP, x Honeycomb, Sae Hiro Soutsugyou-hen (finished) Spoiler A few months ago I wrote my thoughts on the first season, and most of what I said then applies to the whole series. With nearly 24 hours of episodes, I’d have to assume Hidamari Sketch is likely one of the longer slice of life series (that I know of). Despite the fact that there aren’t many differences between each season, it never became any less funny or interesting to me. Hoshimittsu changes things up a bit by adding two new characters, Nazuna and Nori. Though I wasn’t sure how well that would work at first, they fit right in with the rest of the cast. No better way to check if you’ve forgotten something than to do a Shaft head tilt before walking out the door. Sotsugyou-hen is a good place to end the anime; unlike many other adaptations it at least feels conclusive. Rather than going for some kind of cheap shot tearjerker scene, the ending is done in a very Hidamari Sketch-like manner. Even though I previously made a stupid joke about this image describing the last episode, it was handled in such a way that even I didn’t cry (and that’s saying something). Almost seven years have passed since Sotsugyou-hen first aired. Since the manga is still going, it’s not entirely impossible that more of Hidamari Sketch could be animated in the future. For now, it’s on my never ending “manga I need to read because the anime didn’t cover all of the source material” list. With that, I’ll end this with some more screenshots (in a spoiler this time to avoid taking up too much space): Spoiler ...and now for one last head tilt (from Natsume) in honor of Hidamari Sketch; may it rest until its (hopeful) return in 202x. Aikatsu! (Episodes 1 - 50) [At the time of writing this I’ve watched past episode 50, but I’m leaving out the next set of episodes as I haven’t seen them all yet.] Aikatsu is something I had been meaning to watch for a long time. The episode count was certainly not helping; to someone like me who mainly watches 13-26 episode anime, it seemed rather intimidating. In terms of length, Aikatsu has to be the ultimate cute girls doing cute things anime. That might not be the best description of it, however, as there is a plot / story progression. I’ve also seen it described as “slice of life”, which I can’t entirely agree with. Aikatsu is primarily about cute girls doing idol things, such as climbing mountains, cutting down trees, using said trees to sled down a mountain, and solving creative differences within a band fronted by a guy who happens to also be the groundskeeper of the idol academy... okay, so that’s just a few (mostly) one-off episodes. “Is this really Aikatsu?” - Shibuki Ran Ichigo is my favorite character; she’s also the main character, which I would have mentioned already if this were a coherent write up in any way. While not exactly unique, Ichigo is a very endearing character that stole my heart early on. Prior to this I wasn’t familiar with her seiyuu, so without bias I can say that her voice is incredibly cute. Her voice, appearance, and personality are all that of an angel. Part of what makes Aikatsu enjoyable to me is not just Ichigo, but the other two most important characters, Aoi and Ran. Together with Ichigo they make a great trio and are undeniably the stars of the first 50 episodes. Several characters come and go, or just kind of fade into the background sometime after their introduction. Otome and Yurika are good examples of this; they’re usually present, but other times they seem to disappear for a bit. The friendship that these three share is one of my favorite parts of Aikatsu. Oh, and Aoi x Ichigo is really cute. I tried not to look at it “that way”, but it’s difficult for me not to... Episode 50 ends the first part of Aikatsu. How do they end the first part of such a heartwarming, cute, and lighthearted show? Well… [the following contains actual spoilers] Spoiler This whole episode caught me off guard and made me realize just how much I was attached to these characters. I didn’t expect Ichigo to suddenly leave, but it seems rather fitting for her character to be spontaneous. All of the scenes leading up to the end were painful; having the upbeat tune of Calendar Girl playing in the background was kind of a funny contrast lol. It didn’t make it hurt any less, though. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t shed a few tears at this part. Maria Holic, Maria Holic Alive (finished) Spoiler I initially passed on watching Maria Holic years ago, around the time I started watching anime actually. Back then, I was going through all the yuri anime I could find and had just finished Strawberry Panic and Maria-sama ga Miteru. Feeling burned out after experiencing the mediocrity of the two aforementioned series, I read the synopsis of Maria Holic and thought it sounded terrible. However, I read about it recently and decided to give it a chance (obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing about it here). Why put a Street Fighter reference here? I don’t know either. First, I’d like to point out that this is not a yuri anime, or rather I think calling it that may give others the wrong idea. Sure, the main character likes girls (really likes them), but does just having a lesbian main character make it a yuri anime? I don’t really know nor care to argue whether something fits into a genre or not. Either way, the best description I can think of is this: a whacked-out comedy that isn’t afraid to go places some might consider “too far”. While this could be said about virtually anything, it feels especially fitting here to say that Maria Holic is not for everyone. Going by the numbers on MAL, the first season was fairly popular when it aired (5th highest amount of viewers for Winter 2009). However, it seems many were put off by the first season, since the second season saw a significant drop in viewers (nearly 90k less). I should also note that the second season aired around two years later. Upsetting God leads to horrific consequences. As seen above, my favorite character has to be God herself, also known as the dorm mistress. She asks others to refer to her as Boss or God, which considering the setting I can only assume is blasphemy to some degree. Maybe it gets a pass because it's in English「ゴッド」instead of Japanese「神」. Based on her actions and what she's shown to be capable of, the dorm mistress probably is a goddess of some kind. None of this is ever explained, of course, though that’s what makes it funny (to me, at least). Saki, Saki: Achiga-hen, Saki: Zenkoku-hen (finished) Spoiler Yet another anime I’ve been meaning to watch, though this one I put off for slightly different reasons. Anime that center around a sport or game of some kind generally are not hard to follow. For example, I know nothing about ping pong, but something like Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume isn’t hard to understand; while there is certainly technique and skill involved, hitting a ball back and forth is simple enough for spectators to get without having any knowledge of the sport. Saki, on the other hand, is about mahjong. Before watching Saki, all I could say about mahjong was that it involved tiles and looked complicated as hell. I watched the first season with zero knowledge of mahjong. Despite this, it was surprisingly entertaining even when it made no sense and seemed like the rules were changing all the time. Part of what makes Saki accessible to non-mahjong players is that it’s not exactly a realistic depiction of mahjong. One reason for this is the crazy mahjong related magic powers nearly every character has. Another would be that while most of the episodes take place at various mahjong tables, there’s enough focus on the enormous cast of characters and their respective backstories to keep it interesting. Things I learned from anime: girls with magic powers of some sort are also lesbians most of the time. Seriously though, the amount of yuri moments in the first season is off the charts; most of them are between Saki and Nodoka, but the second half introduces a lot of new characters (and potential couples). As usual I have a ton of screenshots, so here are some of my favorite yuri moments: Spoiler I’d like to add here that in the first episode of the picture drama, Yuuki determines that Nodoka is in love, to which Nodoka replies: (in a very typical tsundere way) “I-It’s not like I’m in love with Miyanaga-san or anything!” Achiga-hen is kind of a side story / sequel that is from the perspective of a different school and their mahjong club. It does have relevance to the original, as there are many returning characters as well as new ones that become important later. When it comes to the voice cast, Achiga-hen is one instance where the stars aligned and a miracle happened. I mean, Hanazawa Kana, Yuuki Aoi, and Touyama Nao are all part of the main cast… to me, that is a miracle. Although with the high amount of characters in this series, perhaps it was only a matter of time before they joined (lol). That aside, most of what I have to say is positive, though I’d like to get a few negatives out of the way first. Sadly both Achiga-hen and Zenkoku-hen were animated by a different studio than the first season, and it shows; upon seeing some of the returning characters it’s rather obvious that there’s been a downgrade in the visuals. Another problem that Achiga-hen and Zenkoku-hen have is their shorter length. I haven’t got to the manga yet, so I don’t know if those parts are actually shorter there. As I’ve already mentioned, this series has a massive cast, so having less time to become acquainted with the other teams doesn’t help anything. My favorite character of the whole series is Kuro, unsurprisingly. Sort of like Ichigo, she’s not exactly the most unique character, though that doesn’t make her any less endearing to me. From the teams introduced in Achiga-hen, Senriyama is my second favorite team, with the first being Achiga (obviously). Part of what I love about not just Achiga-hen, but all of Saki is that the other teams aren’t just opponents for the main cast to win against; they’re well thought out, likeable characters (generally) that the viewer may come to love over time. This makes it difficult as to who to root for sometimes. While I always wanted the main cast to be the victors, I also couldn’t help but think some of the other teams equally deserved to win. Obtaining the power to see slightly ahead in the future after returning from the brink of death sounds like something from a mahjong anime, right? Not only that, but Toki can also transfer that power to her (girl)friend Ryuuka because she sleeps on her lap often. This has gone on too long, so when it comes to Zenkoku-hen, I’m going to cut this part short. I already mentioned the negatives; in fact, most of what I said about Achiga-hen applies here, anyway. [Actual spoiler for Zenkoku-hen] Spoiler This is just my preference, but I was disappointed that Himematsu got to go on to the finals instead of the other two new teams. To me they were the least interesting and least likeable team. Though she didn’t get a lot of screen time, my favorite of the new characters is Toyone. Despite her rather intimidating appearance, (her height is 197 cm) Toyone is a really sweet girl who is kind to everyone. The flashback in which she meets (and befriends) the rest of her team is adorable. One other thing I should certainly mention is that Zenkoku-hen is not the conclusion to the series. Unfortunately, Saki is yet another manga that hasn’t been fully animated. The manga is still releasing, however, so the possibility of another season can’t be ruled out entirely. GochiUsa came back after five years, and that’s far from the only example of such a thing happening, I’m sure. Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho (finished) How did I not watch this when it aired? I’m not sure myself. The voice cast alone should have made me watch it sooner, if anything. Four of my top ten seiyuu voice the four main characters; that is even more miraculous than Saki: Achiga-hen. Whatever the case, that doesn’t matter now. Somehow I managed to avoid not only spoilers, but nearly everything. I knew Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho had something to do with Antarctica, and that was about it. I can’t help but be a bit of a contrarian, so when I saw that Yorimoi was widely praised and had a high score on MAL and AniList, I expected it to be okay at best. I mean, it’s on IGN’s best anime of the 2010s list, so you know it’s gotta be good. /s If this were Saki, they’d have an automatic mahjong table even in Antarctica. Since I avoided any information about Yorimoi, I had no clue what to expect. After the first few episodes I was already invested in the story and characters. I wasn’t sure what direction the story would go in, but I was very interested to find out. I think I’ve mentioned before that I tend to watch several anime at once; often watching anywhere from 2-6 episodes of one series, then 2-6 of another, etc. However, with Yorimoi I watched all 13 episodes in a row (over the course of a few days). The point I’m trying to make here is that opposite of my stupid, contrarian expectations, I ended up loving this anime. For further emphasis, I’d like to add that I immediately added Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho to my favorites on AniList and MAL upon finishing it. Though I should probably mention that not a whole lot of consideration goes into my top ten anime, I simply adjust it whenever I feel like it. My favorite character is Shirase… I think there might be a pattern here. Joking aside, this has to be one of my favorite performances from Hanazawa Kana. All of the cast is great, really. The whole “outcasts becoming friends” sort of thing has probably been done a million times before, but it is done excellently (and believably) here. I suppose Kimari and Yuzu aren't really outcasts, so it's not as cliché as it sounds. Regardless, Kimari, Shirase, Hinata, and Yuzu work very well together and are a significant part of what makes Yorimoi great. I was never a high school girl, nor did I have any friends so I can’t really say, but their friendship seems realistic to me somehow. I guess that could also be why some might not like it; if one doesn’t connect with the characters, then I’d have to assume most of the enjoyment would be lost. After seeing the title card and the part before it, I got the strong feeling this episode was going to hurt. [Spoilers for episode 12] Spoiler “‘Oh, I’m not waking up.’ ‘Why aren’t I waking up?’ I thought. That feeling never went away. It still hasn’t gone away.” ...quite a depressing note to start on. Anyone who has read my other posts knows that I’m not immune to this kind of stuff in the slightest. Needless to say, the ending of this episode wrecked me. While I have watched more anime than this recently, I’m going to cut this off here. Currently, I am watching anime at a far faster pace than I am writing this post. In other words, I’ll never finish this if I keep adding more to this list. Also, I tried a slightly different format this time by throwing in screenshots with captions intermittently. I'm not particularly good with words, so this format probably works better for me. Edited October 26, 2020 by Ariadne
Popular Post Masamune
Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei! (complete, enjoyment: 4/5) Fate/kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz! (complete, enjoyment: 3.5/5) I think I enjoyed the second season a bit more than the first, Kuro (Chloe) was a good addition to the series. The 3rd season was lacking a bit though... the first half is just slice of life fillers, things don't start getting interesting again till... the end of episode 6, I think? Overall the series isn't too bad though, but I don't know if I'll be continuing it since the rest isn't (& probably won't be) dubbed. Deca-Dence (episodes 1-6) Well it started out normal enough... gets kinda weird from episode 2 onward though. ? It's interesting enough so far though, so I'll keep up with it.
Popular Post ShonenCat
Is the Order a Rabbit? (episodes 1-24) I might of went into this with my expectations too high, but can you blame me with how kawaii it appears at first glance? It still is cute for the most part, but it didn’t quite leave me with the feel good sensation I was hoping for. I thought the whole cafe/coffee gimmick would of sold me for sure considering I’m quite the caffeine addict myself I liked season 1 quite a bit, but season 2 has a completely different energy. Chino is way too serious for her age, and I wish I could punch Cocoa’s older sister (Mocha) right in the face. She constantly steals Cocoa’s thunder and I just don’t like her. But none of those factors change how great Rize is ❤️ She is best girl by a landslide. She is the sole reason I started watching this anime in the first place ? I dare say she is too good for this show. It is my firm belief she was on her way to audition for Girls und Panzer but got lost and stuck serving coffee with the rest of these girls ? Anyway, it’s just another one of those life-of-slice comedies that doesn’t even come close to the greatness of K-ON, Lucky Star or Azumanga Daioh. I suppose I’m pretty old fashioned ? Sip of coffee for best girl ☕️?
Popular Post Venocide
What I've watched over the last few months: Blood+Total episodes: 50 / Aired in 2005 / Rating: 9/10 I can't remember how I heard about this but at some point I added it to my "Plan to Watch" on Anilist and chose it randomly one day. This show caught me by surprise, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, the first episode my catch you by surprise, it doesn't fuck around...this show is dark. Great story and animation, the backdops look superb especially London and Paris, great music as well with a haunting soundtrack. At one point in the series I was almost in tears, surprised me as well since I hate these characters at first, but...I don't wanna spoil it but something happens at one point and it almost broke me. I would easily recommend Blood+ if you like dark Anime shows, it's not just about vampires there's a lot more to it. Initial D Forth StageTotal episodes: 24 / Aired in 2004 / Rating: 9/10 Probably my favourite stage, superb from start to finish. If think there's about a six year gap between stage one and four, the animation in stage one is a little...dated, even in 1998 there many other shows that were much better looking, still great though. Watching stage four, there's a night and day difference, looks much better and the races are way more detailed. The banging soundtrack is back of course, wouldn't be initial D without it. The story is outstanding, there were times where I thought Takami was finally gonna get smoked, I enjoyed Keisuke's & Kyoko act, I swear to god these two better end up together when I finish this series! I'll be be starting stage five tomorrow which...thank to a YouTube thumbnail I happened to come across, said that stage five is trash compared to stage five, I'll judge for myself of course but that has been dreading watching it now, the entire series so far has been nothing short of amazing. Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!Total episodes: 12 / Aired in 2020 / Rating: 8/10 Oh do I love a bit of internet drama, and Uzaki-chan cause a bunch of sensitive pansy's to reeeeeeeeee on Twitter. How could you hate her? She's so adorable! And what I love in women, short hair and big tits ngl. You just need to read the title to know what this show is about, Uzaki-chan,,,just wants to hang out! Also, that cat...lol always tends to show up during the...highly sexualized favours of romance scenes, and I laugh every time but I don't know what that's about lol. Give it a try, it's a nice little rom-com and season 2 got announced as soon as it finished airing, they know we love Uzaki-chan and want more!! Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-Total episodes: 25 / Aired in 2016 / Rating: 9/10 Well, if you haven't watched this yet, do yourself a favour and watch it right now! Nothing I say can do it justice! I don't wanna say to much cause I know I'll end up spoiling it. Mid way through, I think it was episode 15...bruh, that ending. All I can say is, great plot, music, animation, all awesome! And make sure you ship SuburaxRem Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2Total episodes: 13 / Aired in 2020 / Rating: 9/10 Same reasons as season one honestly, though if I had one issue...out of 13 episodes I think the opening was played only three times 0_0 it's a great opening as well, same with the ending but I had to keep going to YouTube to remind myself how great it was lol. Also, we didn't see a certain someone for nearly all 13 episodes that understandable due to the story but still, she's best girl. Mob Psycho 100 IITotal episodes: 13 / Aired in 2019 / Rating: 9.5/10 Well, Mob Psycho 100 managed to top it's already amazing first season. Really felt a lot darker than season one and you'll know what I mean when/if you've seen it. The art, sound, animation is all superb...speaking of the art, some people say that the art is ugly? It's different but it's by no means ugly, I loved the art style so much! Season 2 has certainly set the bar, season 3 is gonna have a hard time living up to S2. Oh yeah, that opening is god tier, I can see where One Punch Man's S2 budget disappeared to lol
cr1s
When They Cry (TV, 2006) Enjoyment: 9/10 'Tis the season to be spooky, and I decided to watch something appropriate for the occasion for once. What a succulent treat this was! I really loved how it was all structured: multiple separate arcs, each providing a piece of the puzzle until they all fall together in the finale. Apparently this has confused a lot of people, but I was anticipating something like this by the time the second arc unfolded. Speaking of the second arc, I thought it wasn't on par with the rest, but I was hooked all the way through otherwise. Superb pacing, excellent cast, creepy and at times unsettling atmosphere, and intriguing story make up this anime's other highlights. I would've criticized the art style if this weren't a horror anime, but I think it perfectly complements it. All in all, an excellent anime. I haven't really delved into the horror genre, but this is exactly the kind of anime of this type I could get into, and I'll certainly be looking for more series in the same vein. But first, I'm gonna continue/finish this one, as I sure as hell won't wait until next year to do so. Edited October 31, 2020 by cr1s
Masamune
In addition to the normal weekly stuff, I recently started a couple new ones... Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World (episode 1) Only 1 episode, but it looks like it'll be pretty promising just from that. Looking forward to the next one. The God of High School (episode 1) So... why do all the characters in this have a red nose to the point it looks like they have a cold? ? Venocide
Initial D Fifth StageTotal episodes: 14 / Aired in 2012 / Rating: 8/10 I read that stage 5 was trash compared to stage 4, well I disagree, I thought it was fantastic, probably the weaker of all the stages but that's not saying much since they've all been so good. If I had one complaint, it's Ryosuke's slight redesign, his hair changed and he looked a little paler, even in flashback footage from stage 4 they kept his new S5 look. I know I'm just nit-picking but he's my favourite character on the show. "Insert LOOK AT HOW THEY MASSACRED MY BOY meme here!" Next I'm gonna start watching Burn the Witch. Phantochi
Happy Sugar Life Happy sugar life is basically a psychological story where everyone is a pedophile. While this story may not be for everyone, it does stay true to the theme of Psychological Thriller. The way that the story progresses had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The art style is something that really plays to the series, it's colorful and bright but has a very thick dark string at the same time, and the sounds and music just adds to this creppy feeling of the show, the opening for example, has a bit of foreshadowing in it's tone, going from a cute little start then adding a bit of heavier tones as the song progresses. Characters is where people might have problems. The relationship between the main characters could be seen as very manipulative in the beginning of the story. However, having each individual character have some sort of background that made their world not so pretty is something that really adds to each of the characters. Overall, this anime isn't made for the faint of heart, and if you are going to watch this, take into account that there are some very triggering topics in this anime, abuse being a very big one. If you are ok with these things then this is a great anime to take the time to watch.

Wow that's deep, I would never have gotten that impression from the image
EDGES
Kanojo Okarishimasu, I liked the dynamic between the main Rent Girlfriend and the ex-girlfriend, but the main male character and the 2nd and 3rd Rent Girlfriends made this show kinda less enjoyable for me, for the first episodes we focus on the RGF1 and exGF and it's interesting, but after that we go down a spiral of lies and confusion plus needless drama and as the shows go, the main male character becomes more pathetic, overall I would recommend giving the first few episodes a try, but if you want to drop it after that, I would 100% agree Edited April 3, 2022 by The Investigator

I was looking for a psychological horror anime to watch and this came on the search, since it's rather short with only 12 episodes i decided to watch it and damn, it's heavy. The story starts off quite boring but then develops quickly into something you may not expect by how cute it looks

Sigma999
Kennel Tokorozawa (1992) 1 episode OVA Quite average , nothing here to go for, just your typical perveted and humping dog that wants to marry his young and beautiful owner girl. I'll give it a 5/10, not terrible but not good.

Taihou
Kaguya-sama: Love is War I have been loving this, so much fun and laughter and I can't wait to watch season 2 and for season 3 to release. I have never laughed at an anime so much in my life IS: Infinite Stratos I couldn't find this in subbed (go figure) but it's not too bad. I hear people say its really bad so we'll see how it goes. My major gripe is how many times they mention they are childhood friends...it sounds like cringe porn tbh Edited November 8, 2020 by Madara Uchiha

cr1s
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV, 2012) Enjoyment: 8/10 Well, I didn't expect "Chuunibyou" aka "Eighth-Grade Syndrome" to make for such a fun anime with lots of hilarious moments. This first season also delivers on the romance parts, with many sweet moments especially later on when Rikka and Yuuta open up to each other. The specials were worth a watch too. This seems like yet another great series from KyoAni, and I look forward to watching the second season. When They Cry: Kai (TV, 2007) Enjoyment: 9/10 Man, what an excellent follow-up to the first season. Same formula but with longer arcs, a lot more mystery and intrigue, and most importantly... Rena still being Rena. Quite possibly my favorite lighthearted moment of the season. Gotta love Rena and her attempted kidnappings. One thing that was lacking is the first season's chilling atmosphere. I expected this season to have more of that, but it didn't deliver much of it. Not that big of a deal, though - it's still an excellent season all the same.

Taihou
Masou Gakuen HxH So yeah this was something....don't watch it with anyone around...seriously don't *cough* Strike the Blood I honestly enjoyed this. It has the norms of a clueless Haram MC but he still has strength. Worth a watch Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut This one was pretty alright as well. Pretty generic but enjoyable Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai?: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen What can i say, it's Kaguya-sama so it's automatically funny and amazing Machie-Doll wa Kizutsukanai I am planning to watch this starting today. The snippets I have seen have been funny so let's see how it goes
