(Rumor) Microsoft in deep thinking of buying Mojang

here you go:

Microsoft -- the parent company of the Xbox and Windows brands -- is apparently "in serious discussions" to purchase Mojang, according to The Wall Street Journal. Mojang, of course, is best-known for its massively popular Minecraft series.

WSJ cites "a person with knowledge of the matter" in their story, and says the valuation of Mojang could be more than $2 billion. Microsoft and Mojang both declined to comment to WSJ; we've reached out to Mojang for additional comment.

Mojang, founded by developer Markus Persson in 2009, has two still-unreleased games in development -- Cobalt and Scrolls -- as well as Minecraft, which it's still endlessly iterating on with updates and ports.

Microsoft's investment to purchase Mojang, if true, would give the company complete control over not only the studio's upcoming games, but it's all-important, insanely lucrative Minecraft series. As of June, the game has sold over 54 million copies, and has actually sold best on consoles, which bodes well for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Minecraft launched in late 2011 on PC, and we loved it. It later migrated to iOS and Android before coming to Xbox 360 in 2012, where it sold like gangbusters. A PlayStation 3 iteration launched late in 2013, which we also loved, and the game just came to both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. You can read our review here. The only other known, upcoming version of the game -- for Vita -- is due out in the coming couple of months.

What do you make of this news? Do you think Microsoft will purchase Mojang? If so, do you think it will benefit the company?

If it is indeed true, would it force Sony to pay royalties to MS? I would assume so, right?

Never going to happen. Microsoft wouldn't benefit from it at all.

Not unless minecraft 2 was made and was only put on the xbox.

what can they possibly add to Minecraft 2? circles? triangles? that game has reached marketing saturation, everyone who wants it, already has it on a lot of platforms. This would be a really stupid purchase... use those 2Billion to make a great studio instead

Microsoft doesn't want Mojang. They want Minecraft.

They used that logic when they bought Rare to. Except they didn't get Donkey Kong. Now Rare just makes sh**ty kinect games though.

They could open a brand new studio and make their own unique games. This is Microsoft though, so f**k that.

Well MS already pays Sony royalties for using Blu-ray discs so I guess all those Minecraft games for the XboxOne will pretty much cancel out.

Seriously though I wish MS would just start creating studios and making their own games instead of this stupid buying IPs for their console. They act like the rich kid in elementary school that really isn't good at anything but can buy the fastest bike, the best sports equipment and most high-end PC.

:giggle:  :yay:

It's obvious that Microsoft just wants the Minecraft IP.

2 billion dollars is a complete waste of money just to ensure exclusivity on a single title. They could use those to make new original IPs, open new 1st party studios, invest on R&D and what not...no, they just want something that print easy money.

It would be a very cheap move for Microsoft.

Microsoft is at it again buying out developers because they dont have enough faith in their system to outsell its competitors so what do they do ? Buy out the whole freaking gaming industry. Dr mayus is right, MS is just that spoilt rich kid at school that buys everyone and everything

I don't really see this happening, Mojang made 129.000.000 dollar in 2013 alone, as an independent studio with barely any marketing. They should be aware of how Microsoft's image problem would affect their sales. Lose half your fanbase by selling out, spend half the money on marketing, give most of the money to Microsoft, what are you left with? Also, just look at what happened to Rareware.

If the $2bn figure is to be believed then they are planning on doing more with it than just games - m8necraft could be a physical toy based empire like Lego with the right marketing strategy behind it, its like printing money what you can charge for ten-a-penny plastic blocks if kids get into them in a big way.

a little late to the game aren't ya Microsoft.. I can't see minecraft being worth 2 Bil. The profit isn't really there anymore. Mojang doesn't even have to do much anymore... sit back on their throne of cash... This is highly laughable. I also see people saying, "Well Sony got exclusive content for Destiny, so this just makes them even". Then I proceed to laugh directly in their face and reply " Sony didn't have to purchase an entire studio to make that happen". Step your game up Microcrotch. Sooner or later, you might actually have to fund exclusives of your own.
