Help Me Start My Blu Ray Collection

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, it's to the point where I'm finally wanting to start a movie collection. I have a few movies on VHS and a few on DVD but I want an actual collection now and it seems Blu Ray will be around for a while so I might as well start now.

So, here is what I have so far...

Clint Eastwood Collection

The Man with No Name Trilogy

Dirty Harry Collection

Bond 50: The Complete 22 Film Collection

Skyfall

Smokey and the Bandit

Die Hard: 25th Anniversary Collection

The Dark Knight Trilogy

I plan on adding the Alien and Predator movies when I get a chance, so those will be on my own list soon.

It's growing pretty good so far, but I never have been a huge movie buff so I'd love to hear some opinions on good movies to add to my collection. My favorite genres are Westerns and car movies but I'm up for anything me fellow forum goers consider to be good movies.

I appreciate it fellas,

Parker

I'd thoroughly recommend any of the following:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Cool Hand Luke

Lost In Translation

Road to Perdition

About Schmidt

Chinatown

Raging Bull

True Romance

Manhattan

Groundhog Day

City of God

American Beauty

A Beautiful Mind

Rushmore

In Bruges

Swingers

Those above would easily be among my favourite movies ever, but here's a few more I'd say you may have missed that are definitely worth your attention. These would be for those times that you're in the mood for something different:

Midnight In Paris

Amelie

On the Waterfront

Candy

Man on Wire

Somewhere

http://www.blu-ray.com/

If you are not using this site get on it! Not only does have great reviews for movies & hardware components, news on upcoming releases, It also tracks pricing and deals on Blu-rays from Amazon.

Blu-ray is it. Nothing is coming to replace Blu-ray because the future is all about streaming digital content. From a practical standpoint (Especially being from the midwest where I'm from originally) the high-bandwidth connections you need to stream HD content are limited, so you are safe putting some money into a respectable collection for now.

As for suggestions.......

You've already been given a lot of good action movie ideas so I'll throw in some others.

If you're looking for movies that make someone go "Holy Shit!" and then want to trash their dvd's go for these titles.
The Prestige- It's a flawless transfer and one of the best examples of picture quality. It also happens to be a great movie.
Final Fantasy Advent Children- I don't know if you're into anime or not but this movie is amazing both in terms of video and audio quality. The Blu-ray version is extended so If you saw the original the story comes together much better and makes more sense.
The Young Victoria- This might not be your kind of movie... Idk. I really liked it, plus I'm partial to movies starring Emily Blunt. This is another disc with amazing video quality and the detail in both set design and costuming is top notch.
Wall-e- (and most Pixar releases) Look superb on Blu-ray.
Jason and the Argonaughts- Harryhausen never looked so good!
Battlestar Galactica- Awesome in HD and one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever made.
Sin City- Can usually pick it up for $8 or less
John Carter- Fun action packed movies that look great
Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan- The first Blu-ray I ever purchased. Quality is good, and very interesting from a historical standpoint even if they did take some liberties with the story.

Now for just good movies
Commando- It's nothing special to look at but as it is one of the greatest Action movies of all-time it's worth it, If you keep a lookout you can pick this up for under $10 on amazon.
Austin Powers Triple Feature- As of writing this is't only $14.99 for all three movies, if your patient it will probably go back down to $9.99 which is what I purchased it for a couple weeks ago.
Moon- great movie
Sunshine- If you have a Blu-ray player other than your PS3 I'd recommend the movie. It's really good. This was one on my first Blu-ray movies, but sometime after I purchased it one of the PS3 firmware updates screwed up this movie. The special features popup during the movie and you can't turn it off so you can't really follow it because of the interruptions. I haven't tried it in a while so it's possible it's fixed.... but I doubt it.
Dredd- Just got that from Netflix last week. It didn't do well in the theaters but It's a great movie and Karl Urban makes for an awesome Judge Dredd.
Big Jake
True Grit (Original w/ John Wayne)
The Magnificent Seven
Once Upon a Time in the West-This might be one of the best looking HD movies from that era.

I would add tombstone but transfer was pretty lousy so I'd wait on that one

That should keep you busy for a little while. lol
