JohnlMatrix
My reply is a bit late but glad you're back :-). Voted for The End is Nigh. Although I can't play along because I've played the game already, I still voted for it because I'd like more people to try and experience it. This event hopefully encourages some players to do so.
Popular Post ExistentialSolid
Someday I'll have the motivation to reply to everyone in a timely manner... but it won't be today. ? Sorry it's taken me weeks to reply everyone! I've gotta start shaping up if this trial run is going to be any help at all. ? Speaking of, we have less than 2 days before our poll comes to an end, so I hope you're all ready! __ On 12/17/2021 at 10:31 PM, AJ_Radio said: I feel that with practice anything is possible, including Crypt of the Necrodancer. It takes quite a while to get the pattern down, but eventually with enough practice one can nab 1000 coins before they lose all their lives. What can you tell me about Atari Flashback Classics Vol 2 & Vol 3, provided I pick them up at some point? That's the mentality I'm looking for! ? Helping players develop this mindset is what this hypothetical event is all about. For Atari Flashback Classics Vol 2, the cloud save exploit should save you some headache just like in Vol 1, but being able to pause buffer will go a long way to making some of the trophies, "Red Sunset" especially, much easier. I have tips I wrote forever ago linked here if they're any help. ? For Volume 3, I would honestly recommend skipping this one entirely unless the series completion is important to you. The games are more obscure, nowhere near as fun, and harder to find reference videos for. The hardest trophies, "Triple Ace" and "We Don't Actually Need a Photograph," involved pause buffering and cloud save reloading much like volume 2, but, if you have the patience to earn "Red Sunset" from Volume 2, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting this one done (the difficulty between both volumes is pretty comparable). You
I kinda hope The End is Nigh doesn't win. It does look like an interesting game. But you've like, already completed about 5 difficult platform games like Super Meat Boy already, so I feel like you're gonna be able to do that one, since of course you've already proved you are good at these type of platform games. I'm just biased of course, since Catherine is a really original story, and the 3D state shift mechanics of the Cube in that game, are very interesting and unlike any other game. Plus the game is stupidly hard. lol I don't think you've played a game like Catherine before. One of the most unique puzzle games I have ever played.
AJ_Radio
Most people already know what The End is Nigh is about. Nuclear Throne is usually popular with the hardcore gaming audience. So I picked Catherine. I don't know the difference between the PS3 original and this. However I'm generally bad at puzzle games.
Popular Post ExistentialSolid
The Results + Trial Event Protocol Phase 2 of our poll has come to a close and the final results are in! Like a demon straight outta Hell, Catherine has mercilessly dominated both phases of our poll to become the community's choice in what we play next! 1st Place - Catherine: Full Body (20 votes) 2nd Place - The End is Nigh (15 votes) 3rd Place - Nuclear Throne (6 votes) If I'm being honest here, I was really rooting for Catherine to finally win one of these polls so I'm glad most of you feel the same way! This game is Perfect with a capital P for the event trial run. Unlike most of the games I've played for this thread, Catherine has a really strong narrative, creative puzzle-based gameplay, and is tough without being totally inaccessible for players that aren't used to challenging games. Thematically, it also ties eerily well to our hypothetical event; I won't spoil anything, but you've gotta trust me on this! How Will the Trial Run Work? For anyone that may be new to the thread, we're testing out an idea for a potential community event that I may try to host in the future! From today until March 6th, anyone with a copy of Catherine: Full Body (PS4) or Catherine (PS3) is encouraged to play along with me and post progress updates on their personal journey to earn the game's platinum trophy! Whether your updates are a few short sentences or long enough to fill an essay, I would love to see you participate! Please feel free to include as many screenshots, videos, and GIFs as you'd like in your updates (if you're not sure how to post screenshots/videos/GIFs, message me and I'd be happy to help you figure it out). ?Don't feel discouraged if you struggle! Your struggle to succeed is the star of the show; it builds tension and invites others to root for your success. My hope is to see you post about your struggles instead of giving up! Please remember that this isn't a competition. We're all in this together; your success is our success. If you see someone struggling, try to cheer them up! Tell them about a tip that really helped you out or show them a video that they might be able to use as a reference. The goal is to have as many players earn the platinum trophy by March 6th as possible! Do I need to enter by a specific date to play along? You can enter at any time provided you've entered before the trial event ends on March 6th! All participants will be listed in a "Participant List" that I will be putting up on the front page of this thread for the duration of this trial event. If you have an interest in joining in, simply post something like "I'll join!" and I'll add you to the list (alternatively, you can post your first progress update or message me privately and I'll add you to the list)! What if I like the event idea, but don't want to play Catherine? That's okay! Some games will only appeal to a small subset of the audience and I don't want to twist your arm into playing a game that would make you miserable. Most of you have seen first hand with my experience playing The Binding of Isaac that having an interest in a game is important in being able to push your way to the platinum. If Catherine isn't your cup of tea, I've actually been planning a second experimental project that you may want to consider. I was thinking about hosting a private Discord server for informal updates on a game I've been enjoying on the side (and that some of you voiced an interest in): Dirt Rally 2.0. The purpose of this server is the very same as the hypothetical event. We select a game to play as a group and update the group on our own progress until the game is completed. Except, unlike an event on PSNP, each game would be given a dedicated channel for updates/community support and would not necessarily be limited by an "end date" as new games are introduced in separate channels that players can visit (or return to) provided they have an interest in the relevant game. Right now, this server does not exist. However, I plan to present my idea for the server sometime in February (provided my motivation lasts that long ?) with Dirt Rally 2.0 headlining as the server's first project. If you are not really interested in Catherine, but would like to earn the "Flatout" DLC trophy in Dirt Rally 2.0, consider starting the game ASAP and earning the game's other trophies in the meantime (the game is a little grindy, so you'll want to get the fluff out of the way early so that you can focus on the main event: the "Flatout" trophy). ? Bonus ? Catherine is known for presenting a number of tough moral questions during the game's "confessional" sections. Once we get rolling with the trial event, I will be posting anonymous polls every few days consisting of specific questions from the game (I'm going to pick the questions I think are the spiciest, but I mayyyy make them spicier if they're a little bland ?). At the end of the trial event, I will be posting the results of each of the questions I've asked to see where you all collectively stand. ?Some notes before we start! I'll be putting up a "Plan of Action" post introducing Catherine: Full Body and outlining a possible road to the platinum trophy on January 10th! In the meantime, you all are welcome to sign up or start posting your own progress updates on the game! I will post the "Participant List" on the front page of the thread as soon as we have some participants! Since Catherine is a narrative-driven experience, please try to keep spoilers to a minimum throughout most of January! You can go all out in February once most players should be finished with their first playthrough! If you want to get destroyed with me, I hope to see you soon! Have fun! ? Popular Post ExistentialSolid
Catherine: Full Body - Plan of Action ?What is Catherine: Full Body? Catherine is a game... about infidelity and the ensuing guilt that can tear people apart... wait, no... about getting shitfaced and letting go of your inhibitions... no, still not right... about edging?... okay, now you're just being lewd... about desperately pushing blocks around in an effort to escape metaphorical representations of your greatest fears? Yes, that's it! Developed by Studio Zero, featuring many of the same staff that brought us Atlus's legendary Persona series, Catherine: Full Body is essentially a remake of one of the most daring games of the last generation: 2011's Catherine. Half mind-melting puzzler, half social drinking simulator, Catherine is the story of a man named Vincent and his struggle with infidelity. Dripping with eroticism from its sexually charged narrative all the way down to its controversial box art, Catherine is a game that refused to let industry norms define what could and couldn't be expressed in the medium. Full Body expands on the original with remixed puzzle design, new characters & endings, and a new "Safety" difficulty mode for players that are just interested in experiencing Catherine for its story. Don't make the mistake of assuming that this is just "some anime porn game." Even if you have no interest in trophy hunting, puzzle-games, or shameless eroticism, this is an experience I'd confidently recommend to anyone. What is required for the platinum? Earning the platinum in Catherine: Full Body will require the player to: Achieve all 13 endings Listen to every last bit of alcohol trivia Earn the "Gold Prize" in every stage in each of the game's 6 difficulty modes Complete all 128 of the "Rapunzel" arcade while collecting 8 rosaries Climb the tower of Babel What's the game plan? This may not be the quickest route to the platinum, but this is the route I'd suggest for anyone new to Catherine. If you want something a little more efficient, I'd encourage you to check out the trophy guides!Step 1: Play through the story mode blind on either "Easy Classic" or "Safety Classic" difficulty while collecting as many "Gold Prizes" as you can along the way. The story of Catherine is worth the price of admission alone and should be one of your first priorities. As you progress through the game, you'll be graded on your tower climbing efficiency with "prizes" that range from Bronze up to Gold. Don't stress about getting Gold prizes just yet! Get comfortable with the game and enjoy yourself. If you choose to play on Safety difficulty, you will not have to collect any gold prizes at all as they do not count towards any in-game trophies. Step 2: Using a guide, clean up all of the other endings. Feel free to experiment with new difficulties along the way! From here, your goal is to achieve the remaining 12 endings. Alongside these endings, you will work towards listening to all relevant alcohol trivia and collecting any optional story-related trophies. You may wish to supplement the story with the other difficulty options to keep the experience feeling fresh throughout.Step 3: Earn all of the Gold prizes on Easy Classic and Easy Remix. This is where the battle begins! You'll need to sharpen your skills to earn the gold prizes on each of the game's stages, so expect things to start getting tricky. Step 4: Earn the remaining Gold prizes on Normal Classic, Normal Remix, Hard Classic, and Hard Remix. As the game gets harder, expect heavier resistance and far more complicated puzzles. Note that video references may negate the difficulty entirely as you could simply follow along step-by-step and earn your gold prizes with ease. This is not really in the spirit of the game of course, so I'd encourage you to give it your best shot first before falling back on reference material! You will need some genuine skill at the game later on anyway, so learning along the way is going to be in your best interest.Step 5: Complete all 128 levels of the Rapunzel arcade while collecting 8 rosaries. Much like the main game, you can use reference videos to effortlessly solve your way through this arcade game if you so choose. Some of these levels can be a total pain without them so don't feel guilty if you have to peek at the solutions! Don't forget about the rosaries!Step 6: Climb the tower of Babel. This is Catherine's final test that will make or break you. There are 4 nightmarish, randomly generated stages that will push your silly lumps of gray matter to their limits. Thankfully, you can use a 2nd controller to make this step significantly easier. We'll talk about Babel some more later, but don't let this step scare you away in the meantime! What's next for you? Because I played Catherine: Full Body quite a bit back in 2019, I'm currently on step 4 of my game plan. ? Specifically, I've got to start working on Hard Classic and Hard Remix along with their associated Gold Prizes. I will probably film a few, if not all, of my remaining Gold Prizes (and I'll of course film my Babel runs) just for fun via unlisted videos, but I will probably not be posting any public Catherine: Full Body content to my channel since it's covered extensively elsewhere. My first update, which will discuss the basics of gameplay along with my dive into "hard" mode, will be posted January 17th!If you'd like to play along and post your own updates, now's the best time to join in! Since I've already experienced the story of Catherine a few years back, most of my updates will center around the puzzle-solving side of Catherine. I will leave any plot impressions and story-related breakdowns for players that dare to join in on the trial run. Thanks for reading and I'll see you all soon! ? Dzware
I have played the PS3 version of Catherine last year, and while I really enjoyed, I don't feel like buying Full Body yet, so will skip out on playing along with you guys, though I'll try and keep with everyone's progress of course. One tip I can give though is that going for gold prizes in hard is good preparation for Babel, so I definitely don't recommend using video guides for that. Everyone will agree with me though that Rapunzel is just really boring and also not worth it to try and do legit, as the puzzles there are quite different from the story/Babel, so you'll definitely not shoot yourself in the foot by not doing these properly lol. That's the same line of reasoning I followed in thinking Catherine would be the best of the bunch. ? As far as platformer difficulty goes, I've done so much already that there's really nowhere to go but down. Even though The End is Nigh seems to be a local favorite, I don't really see how the game would bring anything new to the table. Maybe I'll have my eyes opened when I play it in the future, but keeping platformers to a minimum in the meantime seems like the only sensible option since I've extensively covered the genre already. I don't want to sink headfirst into a specific niche and just be "that one guy that's good at platformers." You're right that I've never played a game like Catherine before, but I have actually played Catherine quite a bit. ? My first exposure to the game was the PS3 original when I was in college (2016). I was just playing casually, thought the game was too hard, got stuck on my first playthrough on Normal difficulty (I wanna say either stage 6 or 7?), and set it aside. Fast forward to 2019 when Full Body comes out and I was determined to give it another shot. Afraid of getting stuck, I started on Easy and worked my way up. Before I knew it, I had seen all the endings and managed to earn all the gold prizes on Easy Classic/Easy Remix and Normal Classic/Normal Remix. Hard mode terrified me though, so I thought, "Eh... I'll do it another day," but I never went back. It's going to be nice to finally see this game through to the end. There are a few subtler differences that affect difficulty like the PS4 version getting 1 "Undo" in Hard Mode, powerups in Babel, and the hint mode in the Rapunzel arcade, but these don't mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. I'm terrible at puzzle games too, but that's exactly why Catherine would be a great pick for this thread. I'm hoping to get through the game exactly as you've described. When I played through Easy/Normal back in 2019, I was stubborn about refusing to look at any reference material and I'd like to retain that obstinance all the way to the finish line. Rapunzel, however, can be a total nightmare if you try to do it all legit. I remember spending over 40 minutes on one level because I could not understand the solution for the life of me. ? I'd be here all year if I had to solve them all on my own terms. ? In Babel and the story mode, there are often many solutions to any given puzzle so experimentation and trial-and-error doesn't usually drag down the experience. In Rapunzel, as you know, there may only be one strictly defined route to the finish line that would require absurd amounts of time to parse out, so I'm not going to feel much guilt watching references to get those done. From my side, IF I manage to complete Rapunzel until 6th of March, I will consider it a COMPLETE victory.
Baker
Happy to see Catherine win the poll. Can’t join also because I already completed it years ago and I don’t stack games. I think Catherine is an amazing game so good luck and enjoy! And just like Arcesius I might join in for Dirt Rally 2.0. Seems like fun. And @Copanele if you’re struggling with Rapunzel that much why don’t you just follow a guide and get it over with? You know the solutions are set right? ?

Popular Post ExistentialSolid
Catherine and a Taste of Madness - Update #1 Trying to describe the gameplay of Catherine with words is almost as hopeless as explaining the sensation of sight to someone that can't see. At best, I can provide crude explanations related to your general goals before my words devolve into the sorts of frightening nonsense you might see scribbled over asylum walls. Catherine, to that end, goes hand-in-hand with madness, but I'll try my best to boil things down as succinctly as I can.The goal of Catherine is to climb. Whether you're clambering over a torrential rainfall of blocks or pushing and pulling your way to higher ground, Catherine is about the desperate struggle to escape the nightmares threatening to consume you. You will run, you will panic, and you will fall as your world helplessly crumbles around you. Overcoming these nightmares and persevering in the face of defeat is what this game is all about. Will you rise above the doubts chaining you down and piece your life back together or will you sink gently into the void leaving behind nothing but a laundry list of regrets in the wake of your miserable failure?Uh... cool. I learned nothing from that. Right? Catherine may inspire ramblings and word vomit, but coherence is something that can often get lost in translation. The best way to explain Catherine's gameplay is by watching some actual gameplay. Below is a video of me pushing through the first stage of Catherine on "Hard" difficulty if you'd like to get a taste for yourself. [*Note: Here's the same stage on Easy and Normal (being played by someone else) if you would like a little more reference material!] As you can see, climbing in Catherine isn't always intuitive. Block arrangements get complicated fairly quickly and will often overwhelm the player if they're not feeling particularly patient that day. Thankfully, in the game's story mode, all of the block arrangements are fixed. This means that the same sets of blocks will always be there to agitate you no matter how many times you retry the stage. Experimentation, then, is the name of the game as you try to figure out the best way to climb whatever mess of blocks guards the path ahead. Although, if you're feeling especially frustrated, fixed block arrangements also mean that you can simply follow along with a reference video on YouTube and clear any stage with no trouble at all (I wouldn't recommend this approach in story mode as you'll need skill later on, but the option will always be there). I sort of get it... so, is there an easy way to improve at Catherine? There isn't exactly a convenient magic trick that will substitute for practice. That said, the game does make an effort to teach you to get better in the form of "techniques." The characters trapped alongside Vincent in his nightmares aren't there for show. They've got a good handle on how to move blocks around and they'll teach you different strategies as the game gets more complicated. These techniques are always worth checking out so don't let their words go to waste! In the video of stage 1 I linked above, you can see great examples of two great basic techniques: the "Slider" and the "Spider." Slider Spider Have you done this before or something? Yup! Unlike any of the previous games I've played for this thread, I've actually played Catherine... twice. Well, tried to anyway. Thinking back, I guess Catherine's sorta like one of those exes you can't keep yourself away from. My first time with Catherine, back in college, I wasn't ready. The whole experience was just... complicated; I wasn't mature and I guess I didn't care enough to make sense of it all, so things gradually fell apart. When the remake came around and I saw Catherine all glammed up... godddd damn... I couldn't resist. ? I dove back in, determined to at least understand Catherine well enough to see things through to a more satisfying conclusion. I'll stop with the strained relationship metaphor, but you get the picture. ? Basically, the first time I played Catherine, I thought it was too hard and gave up. When the remake came out, I forced myself to earn all of the gold medals on Easy and Normal so that my failure would stop looming over me every time I thought about the game (I saw all of the endings along the way since I really enjoyed the story). At the time, I didn't care about earning the platinum and thought I'd save hard mode for a rainy day, which I suppose must be today. Throughout these updates, I will mostly be discussing my journey through Hard Classic and Hard Remix along with my attempts to scale the tower of Babel. The first stage on hard, which I showcased earlier, was a great warm-up level, but I know Catherine can get much, much harder and I'm looking forward to seeing just how far I can push myself in the story mode without resorting to video walkthroughs of the levels! What's next? We've barely scratched the surface of the nightmares to come! In the next update, which should be posted on January 24th, I'm hoping to showcase stages 2 and 3 while discussing Remix mode and the Rapunzel arcade. I was a little side-tracked this week with Dirt Rally 2.0, which is why I've made such little progress, but I wrapped up everything I wanted to get done, so we should see an update with more substance (and hopefully with less self-absorbed ramblings ?) next week! Thank you for reading and I'll see you all soon! ? Edited January 17, 2022 by ExistentialSolid

For me, I've had the same existential dread trying to push my way through the trials in any fighting game. ? I dunno what it is, but every time I see a screen that looks like this... Part of me dies and I want to break down and cry. Every fighting game seems to invent it's own sub-language that you need to learn and interpret before you ever start approaching mastery and I hate it. It's like I'm back in school staring wide-eyed at a chalkboard covered in hieroglyphics. ? The wounds from when I forced myself to platinum Skullgirls 2nd Encore in 2020 (with actual tears towards the end) were so fresh that, when I attempted my next serious fighting game last year, SSFIV, and saw Ryu's trials, I completely crumbled. I couldn't even finish a single character up before I wanted to send my TV sailing through the window. ? Maybe when you finish Catherine in 2030, I'll give SSFIV another chance. Either way, I'm glad to have you along for the ride. Good luck on getting through Rapunzel! On 1/14/2022 at 2:28 AM, Baker said: Happy to see Catherine win the poll. Popular Post ExistentialSolid
Catherine, Babel, and a Productive Date with Rapunzel - Update #2 Before continuing my hard mode playthrough, I figured now would be as good an opportunity as any to test whether I've retained any of the skill I'd built up back in 2019. While the story mode stages may give you a general sense of where you stand, their fixed layouts mean that puzzle-solving is often a one-and-done affair. To get a better idea of how "gud" I am at the game, I needed something that would keep me on my toes and shift the gunk rattling around in my skull into overdrive...Welcome to Babel Babel was actually meant to be the final exam on my road to the platinum—well, at least according to my roadmap. Now that I've gone back and experienced it, playing it alongside the main story might actually be a more balanced approach to improvement. Babel, unlike the main game, consists of 4 levels that are each randomly generated. In this place, memorization isn't content to be a crutch for your ineptitude; here, you're on your own. Without any knowledge of the blocks ahead, all you really have is the experience you've built up along the way to guide you as you climb to dizzying new heights. If anything was going to test just how much I've retained from years ago, it would be Babel. I started up the 1st stage, Altar, in the hopes that I was still capable of reaching the top. I successfully scaled Altar for the first time back in 2019, but I was fresh out of the story mode and had a good handle on how everything worked at the time. Would I be any good two long years later or would the "test results" show that I'm all washed up? Getting used to moving two characters at once**, something you'll have to practice if you want the least difficult route to the platinum, was jarring at first. I floundered around the base of the tower like an agitated fish and mixed up the controls often enough that my cheeks were flushed with shame... but I started to climb. Step-by-step, as though no time had passed between then and now, I trudged to the top of Altar and slammed the button with a vindictive smirk smattered over my face. I still had it. Yeah, my time may have been a minute slower than the first time I scaled Altar (5:49 vs 6:57), but my fundamentals were still intact. Altar was out of the way, sure, but I didn't plan to stop testing just yet. My next stop was Menhir, the 2nd stage of Babel. In 2019, my best run was not a successful one. According to the high score board, I made it to the 92nd step before plummeting to my doom. Determined to push past my former self, I set to work with two controllers perched precariously in my lap. I tried with all that I had to reach the top, but, after 3 failed attempts, I stumbled at the controls and was impaled by spikes on the 77th step. I was close... that's the important thing. But no matter how much I tried to soothe my ego, it still hurt. **Note: In Babel, there are two modes of play: Solo and Co-op. If you select co-op, the block arrangements are significantly easier to solve than they are in solo. By controlling both players yourself in co-op, you reap the benefits of much easier puzzles, but are handicapped to an extent by having to juggle two players as you climb the tower. If one player dies, the game is over. If you'd like to see either of the Babel runs I've talked about above in full, I've linked them below! Babel - Altar [Clear] Babel - Menhir [77 Steps]Losing Part of Myself to Rapunzel One of the reasons I never attempted to earn the platinum in Catherine: Full Body was because I was convinced I would never be able to conquer the Rapunzel arcade without referring to video guides. What is the Rapunzel arcade? Well, it's a "game within a game" sitting in a dusty corner of the Stray Sheep bar. Functionally, the game is just like Catherine, but the puzzles contained therein are more obtuse than anything you'll see in the game's main story. Check out level 56 for an example of the madness you're up against. I mean... excuse the fuck out of me? Hell no. You can't expect me to play 4D chess when I barely understand checkers. If you're anything like me, you could lose yourself for hours only to stumble onto the solutions to 1 or 2 of the arcade's 128 levels. Without any sort of reference, I wouldn't dream of finishing these in less than several hundred agonizing hours. You would need to strand me on a deserted island with nothing but the Rapunzel arcade for entertainment to catch me getting anywhere close to finishing these on my own. Anyway, the point of all this buildup is to say I've accepted the fact that I would never be able to clear these levels in a reasonable amount of time. Instead of trading brains with someone more capable, I've decided to use Rapunzel as a learning experience. I figure I might as well gleam whatever techniques I can by watching other players push through these levels instead of leaving them to rot as insurmountable obstacles until the end. So, I booted up Rapunzel, pulled up a playlist of level solutions, set the playback speed to 0.5x (so that I could mimic each action without too much stress), muted the game along with the playlist, and put on some relaxing Metroid music as I chugged through level after level. Hours passed. My decision to set the video speed to 0.5x meant I could be more attentive about what I was doing, but also led to moments of impatience. Thinking I had things all figured out, I made dozens of false predictions about what the reference player was going to do next. These moments were some of the most valuable in retrospect because I could see what I was doing wrong and understand why the "right" way works. Eventually, the school bells rung and class was over. All 128 levels of Rapunzel were finished at the cost of my pride. The question is... did I learn anything?A Return to Story Mode Babel At this point, it should have been time to return to my hard mode playthrough and get on with things. And I would have been happy to do so, except... my fragile ego demanded we go back to Babel and try to climb Menhir again. My leash is tighter than I'd like to pretend it is, so I headed straight there in another vain effort to settle the score with my former self. Could I really beat 92 steps? It's just 92. I managed 77. 92 is nothing special. Why did I even care? My ego tugged the leash and whispered, "because I own you." I yielded. Imagine being so prideful that you constantly feel the need to one-up yourself. Back in Babel's Menhir, climbing with a controller balanced on each leg, I was going to shatter the ceilings of my past whether I liked it or not. To my surprise, climbing seemed easier than it was before. Take the innermost blocks and push them outwards to help keep the tower intact, build bridges to nearby platforms to give yourself more room to work with, push blocks outward to drop a layer if you can't progress otherwise—tactics I've internalized from mimicking Rapunzel videos started to surface in my gameplay. Each step in my ascension was more deliberate than the last. Every block pushed was one small part of a masterpiece—my masterpiece. Mixing up the controls like some belligerent train conductor was starting to become a thing of the past. I settled into a groove. I was determined. ...I was furious. In less than 20 minutes, Menhir fell. Full Run -> Menhir [Clear] I couldn't stop the grin from creeping across my face. My former self was dust and I reveled in its demise. What's Next? Um... right. I didn't get the chance to showcase levels 2 and 3 or discuss some of the differences between classic and remix mode. ? I got sidetracked yelling about Babel. At least we know what's coming next! Expect the next update on January 31st with more levels, more explanations, and maybe less of ...this? I dunno. Thank you for reading and I'll see you all soon! ? da-Noob123
Loved the 4d chess comment, that was great. Good pointer on the rapunzel levels to just follow a guide and internalize the strategies. I'll probably go that route myself before tackling babel. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to join in the event. I was admitted to the hospital Monday and was discharged today so nothing truly major but definitely a large unexpected expense coming in the mail... o_O Buying another game may not be wisest decision right now but I never claimed to be so we'll see how things go. Nice job topping stage 2, I'm guessing you might go over the cliff and just finish babel off before finishing hard mode. That leash can be a witch with a capital B. But hey, if it makes you happy, go with it, your posts where you follow your desire outshine the ones where you force yourself to do something your not into at moment. Eerily enough, it almost feels as though the Babel levels were balanced to account for people using 2 controllers. There's often more than enough time to switch your hands from one controller to the other to navigate the tower, so you never have to simultaneously maneuver two characters like a lunatic if you don't want to. Figuring out a clean route up the tower without stranding either player is your biggest challenge. I can't imagine the level of synergy required for two actual people to climb Babel together though. ? I feel like most cases of "cooperation" would be the more experienced player barking orders at the less experienced player. There's not always enough room for both players to climb independently of the other, so your communication skills would need to be on point to make sure you both see the finish line. Please don't worry about the event. You stopping by (on the day of your discharge no less) is more than enough. I know you mentioned it was nothing major, but I hope everything's okay. ☹️ The only problem with letting my whims take the reigns is that my journey through Catherine is going to be more confusing to follow along with. There are a lot of little things I learned back in 2019 I either haven't explained or have barely touched on like the rules of edges, block type, the energy drink that lets you go up two steps in a pinch, etc. Not understanding these little things can gradually drive a wedge between the audience and myself until I stop being comprehensible. Before I know it, I could be off in my own little world like a 6-year old excitedly explaining the minutiae of their favorite toy. ? Then again... I'm having fun and maybe that's all the audience wants to see at the end of the day.
Popular Post ExistentialSolid
Catherine and My Extended Affair with Babel - Update #3 I couldn't stop thinking about Babel... I wanted to go back, but didn't really understand why—or maybe I did and just couldn't put into words what it was that tantalized me about the tower. Babel's unpredictability was thrilling in a way that the rest of the game just couldn't match. Every row of blocks beckoned me onwards like a Siren's song, but pushed me back in equal measure as if guarding an ancient treasure. Determined to pry this treasure from the tower's icy clutches, I made the confusing decision to venture back for another round. My obsession continues. But first... some Babel Basics Up to this point, I haven't done a great job explaining what Babel's all about. ? This section is here to help me quickly cover the essentials of Babel and fill you all in on some of the confusing gaps I've left along the way. If you already know all about Babel and want to continue the story, the "Ego or Addiction?" section below has got you covered! Like the main game, the goal of Babel is simple: to reach the top of a tower. But, unlike the main game, this tower hasn't been constructed yet. As you climb, blocks will fall in randomly selected patterns that correspond to the level you are on. Each of Babel's towers consist of 10 levels you must pass through to reach the end. To go up a level, you need to take a specific number of steps. However, a step is only considered a "step" if you move up the tower. In other words, for every block layer you climb, you'll increase your step count. Increase your step count enough and you'll go up a level. Increase your level to 10 and reach the finish line to claim victory over Babel. Each of Babel's four towers have different heights, block types, and block patterns. However, the tower's height and block patterns change depending on whether you're playing in solo mode or co-op mode. If you play in solo mode, you will face taller towers and more complex block patterns. Likewise, if you play in co-op mode, you're up against much shorter and less complex towers to account for a second climber.Tower Stats (approximate): Altar - 150 steps in Solo - 100 steps in Co-op Menhir - 190 steps in Solo - 120 steps in Co-op Obelisk - 210 steps in Solo - 140 steps in Co-opAxis Mundi - 280 steps in Solo - 170 steps in Co-op The longer the Tower's name, the taller the tower. As the stats may suggest, it is much easier to conquer Babel if you attempt to climb the co-op tower variants instead of their solo counterparts. Conquering either variant, however, will award you with the relevant trophy. We've got one last thing to cover and that's the Energy Drink. Whenever you start up Babel, you're given 3 energy drinks that can help you out in a pinch should you need them. Each energy drink will enable your character to jump upwards two blocks and grab platforms that were once out of reach. This drink can be a lifesaver, so don't forget about it!Ego or Addiction? One day had passed since I successfully scaled Menhir. I still needed a target—something that could tangibly mark where my skill level stood and motivate me to get better. Setting a bar for myself, I thought, would give me the drive I needed to push through the game's hard mode and improve at the game in the process. Surely the Obelisk, stage 3 of Babel, would put a halt to my momentum and show me where this bar lied. Obelisk differed from Altar and Menhir in that it had a cool sounding name, some icy blocks, and proudly wore the "stage 3" label. Ultimately, the differences didn't matter; it was another tower and I needed to climb it. "A few quick runs and I'll be off. Just a half hour, that's all I need." The thoughts of a hopeless addict barreled in and out of my unchecked mind. "Obelisk has broken the spirit of many a man," the narrator would gloat at the start of each attempt.Break me then.Obelisk - Full Run An hour later and the narrator's hollow words echoed along the tower's crumbling walls. I was satisfied with myself, but I was no closer to seeing where the "bar" was located. If Obelisk couldn't give me an idea of where I stood, would I need to visit the final stage of Babel? A Collapsing Narrative Another four days passed. Before me stood the last of Babel's towers: Axis Mundi. It loomed large as the tallest, and most difficult, structure I would have to climb in my journey to the platinum trophy. Even though this was supposed to be the end, the "bar" I was searching for had to be there... right? The absurdity of the situation started to weigh on me. Why did I stop all those years ago? What changed? I refused to believe a few hours of Rapunzel could have possibly been all the difference between success and failure. My rate of progression didn't make sense. None of this made sense... I began to climb. My first steps were filled with a wonder I hesitate to describe**. A calming jazz-infused track seemed to haunt this ethereal little world. As much as I denied the reality of the situation, the step counter ticked upwards without any signs of stopping—just as it had in Menhir and Obelisk. I worked my way up the tower slowly, mechanically. The music started to swell and I braced for the end. I began to accept that I may never find the "bar." Perhaps it didn't even exist. After 40 minutes or so, I stumbled over to the finish button in quiet disbelief. As I pressed it, Babel was finished and the narrative I carefully constructed around its completion had collapsed. **Note: Experiencing Axis Mundi for yourself may be one of the best parts of the game, so I've decided not to spoil it outright via gifs or video imbeds. If you'd like to see my final babel run regardless, I've linked it here! Axis Mundi Full Run. **Before we step away from Babel for the time being, I'd going to leave my initial completion times below for reference. Collapse Consequences With Axis Mundi's completion, I had gutted the climax of my own update arc. The plan of "building up my skill" in the hard mode playthrough was now a fruitless endeavor. I apparently didn't need any more skill. Babel had been devoured by my obsession. I wouldn't lose a thing if I just mindlessly followed video guides right up until the platinum popped—in fact, if I wanted, I could have the platinum in just a few hour's work... So what now? Is this the end of this update series? Do I earn the platinum and call it a day? What if I just moved the goalposts a little bit? Would that solve anything? ...Well, like it or not, that's exactly what we're gonna do. Remember how I mentioned I played the original Catherine years ago, but thought it was too hard at the time? Alright, so hear me out! I want you to take a look at the difficulty estimates of both of these guides. What do you see?Catherine (PS3) - https://psnprofiles.com/guide/6099-catherine-trophy-guideCatherine: Full Body (PS4) - https://psnprofiles.com/guide/9061-catherine-full-body-trophy-guide The original release's difficulty rating is a 9 while Full Body is sitting at a 7. Now, difficulty ratings only mean so much, but do you know where the rating difference between the two lies? That's right... Babel (additionally, hard mode has no undo option but that's beside the point). In the original release, you don't have any energy drinks to help you out of a jam and several stages have more complex layouts. I'm dying to see what Babel has to offer in the original. A New Plan I'm going to continue my hard mode playthrough in Catherine: Full Body in an effort to "build up my skill" for the more difficult version of Babel in the original PS3 version of Catherine. Am I losing it? Maybe. But hey, at least this gives us an excuse to properly play through the game without worrying about about all this Babel nonsense. What's Next? Since there's no Babel left in the PS4 release, I'm actually going to continue my hard mode playthrough this time. I'll be posting my next update on February 10th (can you believe we still haven't talked about stage 2 and 3 yet? Never mind the remix mode... what a mess).Hey, remember that Dirt Rally 2.0 Discord server I mentioned awhile back? I'm going to be making the server public on February 3rd if anyone would like to join in earning the "Flatout" trophy with me! More details will be posted on the 3rd, but, whether you'd like to play along or just want to pop in to say hi, you're all invited to join! Thank you all for taking the time to stop by and I'll see you soon! ? Edited February 2, 2022 by ExistentialSolid
You
I remember that Rapunzel stuff being very ridiculous. You have to do all 128 levels in one sitting right? And if I recall, you have to do another 128 levels.
