Wasnt that mainly developers move against second hand market and not Sony's?

Also many (if not all) ditched that model later and changed online pass free if I remember it right.

Could be, yet Sony was part of it. It prints money.

It's crazy what else they came up with:

https://www.eurogamer.net/sony-patents-tech-to-block-use-of-second-hand-games

https://www.destructoid.com/sony-ps4-wont-block-used-games/

Something I'd put in that corner is a PS5 with no disc drive...

Digital ps5 was option for some who dont buy physical games, but as far as I know Sony manufactures those models on lot lower scale than regular models. I havent seen digital models on my country store fronts but I havent been on look out avidly on either models so that basicly means nothing.

Those links do sound crazy, but second hand market is still happening on ps5.

Minor thing, but decision to lock discs to single console would ruin library's games collections. That's a thing in Finland atleast.

Come on now, I understand the sentiment towards the petition, but please don't wish for this, better to have malfunctioning servers than no servers at all, Far Cry 2 trophy hunters will tell that much.

Servers aren't made for just trophy hunters. That's an idiotic entitlement I see argued constantly in the topic of server preservation. But then we can't get trophies. Good and there's games on PC with unobtainable Steam achievements thanks to server closures and same goes with Xbox.

The fact is as trophy hunters we aren't paying into these servers, we aren't even contributing much in terms of money towards the devs as most trophy hunters I would argue are quite frugal and would rather spend less. There's literally no incentive to them to keep it open for us. And sure one could say but we still play it, that's cool there's probably always gonna be someone just playing it. But it doesn't mean that's enough player count to keep it open.

TL;DR We aren't the only reason these servers exist. So people have to stop with that notion.

Sorry, but what does all this have to do with you wishing developers close more servers because someone made a silly change.org petition?

Sorry, but what does wishing devs to keep servers open for a game no one is planning to continue to support after they've completed all trophies in it?

If you can't come up with any competent argument just like OP is lacking as too why servers need to stay up just for us. Your failing to see my point. We aren't worth it for the servers alone and we never will be.

I feel like all developers should be forced to have an EOL patch that would support peer to peer matchmaking. If I can still play the OG Age of Empires from the 90's when it was all dial up then how can I not play modern games? The only issue would be leaderboards which I feel should be a lighter load that Sony could host as part of PS+

EDIT: Alternatively allow a company to buy the rights to the IP for the servers so we can get a subscription service that keeps "old" games alive. I have personally reached out to a couple of dev's and its usually the publisher who pushes for closure....

Dedicated servers are used for two reasons, greed, and also for security. The latter is that you can't really have super multiplayer games where someone is the server due to cheating.

Like imagine if an only Casino game was not a dedicated server. That's a scam right there since one person can alter the data with cheats. Also the server can use lag switching and how are you going to stop it?

Depending on how games were made programmatically, not all games can simply have a server switch and remain operational. This is especially apparent on games where data for example is offloaded to a third party for efficiency. Like if you have AI bots in a game that are controlled by a server independent of the game using a completely different piece of software, are you gonna give that software for free. And what about the online data stored on a server somewhere, something like RE.net, or a custom client that also connects you into the world of the game you are playing.

Servers on games are a lot more complicated in many cases than most people think. You can't easily just turn them on again once they are off. And this isn't even touching on the human maintenance of said servers, which aren't just machines that are left on and unattended for several years. Someone needs to pay for that maintanence and space for the machines in the server and where they are stored. (it's not just "one server" usually, but a set of them (obviously) )

Hysterical. You said greed was one of the (only two in your argument) reasons and then proceeded to spell out many of the ways dedicated servers cost companies more money in the long run. But somehow that’s greedy. Nice job!

I guess when someone is going for the oversimplification fallacy, they’re bound to counter their own premises.
