Did a bit of reorganising on my Switch. Turns out that since launch, I've bought 42 games, of which 40 digitally.

Of those 42 games, there seem to be 14 which I haven't actually played through yet. So I guess I should focus on playing those instead of buying new stuff.

Let's see how far I get without peeking:

  1. Skyrim. Awesome game and I really should take more time for it. Played for ten hours or so.
  2. Yooka-Laylee. Fun game and I really should take more time for it. On the start of the Casino level now.
  3. Super One More Jump. Fun game, playing this on occasion. Just a quick play-a-few-levels game. Over a third of the levels are done now.
  4. Kid Tripp. Fun game, playing this on occasion. Just a quick play-a-few-levels game. In world three now.
  5. Sonic Mania. Got game over on the final boss, and as such not hugely motivated to "finish" it because it means replaying two levels of which I already know I'll die due to not having enough time in the first level, and I got killed in the boss even though I knew what to do and had a bunch of lives.
  6. Robonauts. Less fun than I thought it would be but I want to see it through. Over halfway done.
  7. Pan-pan. Less fun than I thought due to the puzzles and paths not being logically deductible from the surroundings.
  8. Forma.8. Really fun, but seeing as I also got it on PS+, I'm playing it on the PS4 and I'm saving the Switch version for a holiday.
  9. Snipperclips. Bought the DLC but haven't played through it yet because my wife is too busy with her studying.
  10. Golf Story. Wasn't good enough for the final match so I decided to grind a bit and up my maximum distance, but then got distracted by other games.
  11. Blaster Master Zero. Didn't like it as much back then but Axiom Verge and a few others got me more interested in 8-bit MetroidVania games. Should give it another chance.
  12. Snake Pass. Really liked it, but got distracted after a while when one level took too much effort and made me go to a different game. I'm in the final world.
  13. The Fall Part 2: Unbound. Really liked it but haven't taken the time to do more in it. Played for an hour or two.
  14. Völgarr The Viking. Loved it but it's a game you really should go and sit down for, which I haven't had a lot of time for. Finished one world.

I'm not sure what's wrong with me.  Every time I play Breath of the Wild, I find some new and interesting stuff to do and genuinely have fun for a few hours.  Then I spend a few days not playing the game (as life beckons me elsewhere) and I have the hardest time turning the darn thing back on.  Then in the dying moments of any given weekend, after a bit of soul searching, I say '**** it' and turn it on and play it for a few hours and it keeps me pretty darn well entertained.  I think my disdain for this brand of giant aimless open world games is clashing with the fact BotW is a really good game.  I want to hate it but I don't think I can without just being irrational about it. xD

I got the last of the towers activated on Sunday, so the map is all available now.  If I buckle down and finish up the last two Divine Beasts and maybe putz around with some more shrines or preparation stuff that I read online (since I'm sure as sugar not going to drag this out much longer than necessary by hoping I randomly stumble on certain things), I feel like I'll be in a good place to approach (what I believe to be) the finality of the main quest.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm itching to re-play Hollow Knight lately.  On the Switch, with all the fancy new content they've added since I initially played it at launch.

Sometimes it's hard to dig up motivation even for good games, so I understand that feeling. Hopefully you can stick with it and finish it up. I have the BotW DLC and I'm having trouble finding the motivation to finish it. I did do the one-hit-death combat trial part that was mentioned a lot online, but then I took a break. Sadly I have a hard time getting motivated when the "next area to go" isn't marked for me in open-world games. For me, exploring the map and going on a quest are separate things, and I want at least a medium amount of guidance for quest goals.

Not to be one of those pricks, but damn I'm bummed Spyro wasn't announced for Switch. Following how Crash went, and all the rumours, it seemed it'd follow the same path you know? Year on PS4, then drop everywhere else. I was fine with that, hell, I was expecting that, but now they've thrown me a curveball. Is this all the platforms they'll be dumping it on? Should I wait and see, or should I just get on PS4? I don't know.

I would prefer it exponentially on Switch. As I'm sure you've often heard me say at this point "I played the crap out of these on my PSP and later Xperia Play" but I did, Spyro 3 is probably one of my most played portable games period. Hell, to be honest, I'm not even sure I'll bother with the first two, like, I will, but I mean, I'm gonna be deadset jumping into the third one quick smart.

I remember way back when, we were at a market and I grabbed I think 5 PS1 games off a dude for like 7 bucks or something, back then that was a pretty good price, and they had what I thought were photo copied covers and the discs were a little odd. They had pictures but had the logo for GameStar or something in lieu of the PS1 logo we all know and love. Anyway, long story short, we eventually found out they were American discs, or copies of American discs, either way, they didn't run on my Aussie PS2, so we somehow found our way to a modchipper as every young kid once did and that led to hundreds of games from this one dude we'd meet at the local pub every now and then who'd burn them for 5 bucks a pop. Shit was dope at the time, you know, before I grew up and got my own money and realized the whole "pirasur is wrung" angle too.

Anyways, cut away from that. So Spyro 3 was one of the games from that dude at the market and every time you'd boot it, and a couple others, you'd get this minute or two long intro from PSX-Paradox, a PS1 hacking/modding/pirating group, which always had the weirdest little jingle but I grew to love it. And sometimes Sparx the dragonfly thing would tell me off for using a pirate version or something, maybe it was Zoe the fairy or whatever her name was, either way, occasionally you'd get told you can't save or something because you stole it. I was like 8 or 9, I was just spamming the skip button on them anyway.

Moral of the story? If I can buy the Spyro trilogy on PSP, PS3, and Vita for the one low price of 6 dollars, like I did years back, well, actually I got nothing. We both know I'll be buying this day one, I just wish I'd be buying it on Switch. The only reason I'll double dip on Crash is because we got it for a steal at launch back when they didn't know stores would literally be sold out of it for months and made a good deal, I sincerely doubt I'll get a deal for Spyro as good as "trade 2 PS4 games and pay 20 bucks for it" like we did with Crash, two four dollar copies of Destiny and 20 bucks? Good deal to me, when it's selling out everywhere at it's full RRP of 70 bucks, so much so that literally most stores had no copies for weeks at a time.

Looks like it may very well be coming to Switch.

I thought the Spyro games would be cool on Vita (I never had a PS1 so this was my first time playing the games), but for some dumb reason, in the USA they don't work on Vita, only PSP. I'd definitely be interested in playing the remastered versions on Switch. They interest me far more than Crash actually.

Learned that not long after posting. Definitely will be waiting on the Switch version. Hopefully they'll drop it themselves in a Direct or at their E3 thingy coming up. Do I really need it? No. Am I likely to actually finish all 3? Eh, maybe, but not super likely or super soon. Am I day one-ing the Switch version? You know it.

Dumb Story Time

So I ran out of storage on the Switch the other day. These sales been hitting me hard. (Yes, I caved and bought shit, for those paying attention, though it's all entirely already loaded up eShop cred, so no real money yet), and anyway, I finally caved and deleted my first thing. The ridiculous unwanted multiplayer 8.1gb download portion of Doom. Once again I tried everything, deleting my internet settings, using flight mode, all of it, nothing would let me play the game without the patch. Bummer. Anyway, I thought maybe it would be because I have a save file on there that was made with the patch, so I deleted all game data, deleted my save data as well (not that much of a biggee, whenever I come back to the game it will likely be to burn through the story again anyway), deleted my internet settings, put the bitch in flight mode, restarted the system, and prayed to Satoru Iwata's space ghost that it would work, and...

It didn't.

What a shock, I know. Anyway, don't think there's any way around this any more, real shame. I would have loved to be able to keep all my stuff installed but alas, it's either delete stuff or buy a bigger memory card time. However since LA Noire and Doom take up over 30gb combined I don't really need a bigger card, as without those games I'd not even have filled half my memory card. So what this whole thing boils down to, is yet again, another almighty fuck you to any publisher who cheaps out and uses the smaller size Switch cards.

Also @The Spark, yeah, Insult Simulator was shit as you said. I thought even if it was shit, I thought I'd get a laugh, but it just sucks. I listened to what you said, I took your thoughts into consideration, I took the jump anyway, and it sucked, it was only three bucks, but I regret it.

How large is your card? I've got a 128GB one and it's long from full, though I have none of the super big games.

That's too bad, but some mistakes you just have to make for yourself :)

I hope you only bought one of the two though.

I've played throug Retro City Rampage and it was pretty funny in the end, by the way. Though I still wish indie devs wouldn't just jump to 8-bit stuff

64gb. I've got just over 50 games installed on it too. Last night I did the sweep and went through the lot seeing what needs an update. Rocket League went from a nice little four point something gig game to a nine point something, sheeeet. Since I NEVER play online I probably shouldn't have bothered with that update either. Finally delete Doom, get 8gb back, waste 5 on an update I don't need instantly. Great plan. Anyway, 128gb cards go on sale here and there but the cheapest you'll ever see one is about 60/65 bucks and (before the Rocket League patch) if I took Doom and LA out of the mix I'd still have a good half of my 64gb one to go, with 50 odd games already, so I'm not gonna need a bigger card any time soon, really. ... I think I just need to hurry up and finish LA Noire, I'm about two thirds of the way through and have been for months. Once I finish that game, I doubt I'll be jumping back in super soon and I could get away with archiving it for a while.

It's so shit. Yeah I only got one. A friend actually got the second one though, I feel like both of us are too ashamed to ask what the other thought though, as we're both gasbagging about the Switch almost daily at the moment.

I feel. I've long been over the 8bit aesthetic. RCR at least I can justify because the whole thing started as one dude trying to make a version of GTA3 that would work on the NES over 10 years ago, if nothing else, that's far from lazy, which I honestly think a lot of these smaller games nowadays are. I can get down with some 16bit stuff, Shakedown looks great, if it ever wants to come out, that is. But you know what, the one good thing Vaccine did was make me realize how much I actually kinda want 32bit to become the next indie trend. That game was nothing special, hell, it honestly was pretty dodgy really, but everything about it hit my nostalgias in the gut. That style, the visuals, the shitty PS1 tank controls, all of it. I really dig it. If there was a small scale platformer like, I don't know, Super Lucky's Tale, that had a 32bit mode, I'd actually love it. All these remakes of 32bit games are nice, but making a shiny new 32bit game would be nice too, you feel?

I love 16-bit and wish more devs would use it instead of 8-bit. And stuff like Dust and Hollow Knight show that hand drawn graphics are workable for indie devs.

I just feel like 8-bit wasn't even that interesting when it was new, it baffles me that people want to go back to it. It looks and sounds horrible unless you really, really know what you're doing.

Speaking of 16-bit, I just started Golf Story last night. I haven't finished any of my current Switch games, but I figured "why not, might as well start another new game!" I am still in the beginning area; I just saved up enough money to talk to the coach, and that's where I signed off for the evening. So far the game seems pretty cool. I've never made it very far in a 8-bit or 16-bit RPG, so I'm not sure how well I will manage without some of the modern conveniences I take for granted. I do like that it has a Save and Quit function, and I noticed that it kept my money (and presumably items, once I have them) but started me in the beginning of the area. That seems similar to how Ocarina of Time did save states. I didn't notice a way to see a map of the world, so I'm not sure how that will work out for me. Maybe i'm spoiled, but a lack of an in-game map is usually a big negative for me.

... Yeah, that sounds spoiled :D

Definitely spoiled if we're talking about a game like Golf Story, which has just a few golf resorts, that aren't that big.

I don't mind not having a map as long as it's obvious what I need to do.

It's a fine line for me between "the game world is small enough that we don't a map" and "I'm making a retro game, so I'm not bothering to make a map". I guess I'll see where Golf Story falls in that regard. At the very least, it's charming and the golf shooting is fun, so hopefully that will outweigh not having a map.

For me, in-game maps are tied with save states as the best quality-of-life improvements gaming has gotten in the past 35 years, and I hate to see them missing. It made me skip Owlboy, a game I was really looking forward to playing. Sometimes I think developers purposely leave out modern conveniences just to be hipsters or something. And maps aren't even "new" - Super Metroid had the feature back in 1993.

I think maps are more important to you than they are to me.

Don't forget the first Zelda game already had an in-game map (in 1986), and I doubt it was the first to do so. And I know games without an in-game map that featured a map in their instruction manual, like Jurassic Park on the SNES.

Anyway, the addition or lack of an in-game map has never influenced my purchase decisions. I'll get Owlboy at some point, when I've finished more of the games that I already own.

I should focus some more on finishing games, Donkey Kong releases in a few weeks.

As someone who played (and gave up on the final dungeon boss gauntlet) Zelda 1 a few years ago, I did know it had an in-game map, but it slipped my mind when I made my last post. Google also failed me, as EVERY SINGLE result in my search of "games with in-game maps" and the like came up with "biggest open-world game maps". I guess it's true that the world is obsessed with size. :P So I used Super Metroid as my example since it was the earliest game I could think of with an in-game map.

Yes, in-game maps are extremely important to me. Since I have entered the "parent gaming" phase of my life, I need to be able to play games in short bursts. Things like save states and maps are a big part of that. But even before I became a parent, I placed a lot of value on these conveniences. It's unfortunate that some developers either don't take these considerations into account, or willfully ignore them. Everything I've seen about Owlboy looks like a game I would enjoy, but the lack of a map is a deal breaker for me. I need to be able to jump in and see exactly where I'm going. I tried playing Metroid 2 on my 3DS (it's an old Gameboy game), and the lack of a map made me drop the game. Thankfully I was able to enjoy the remake of the game (Samus Returns) because it featured a map similar to Super Metroid.

I've seen the claim that things like maps break immersion, and I sort of understand that argument. But at the very least, it should be an optional feature for those of us who value it. I guess immersion isn't all that important to me; if the story and game world is interesting, that's enough for me. I'll take quality-of-life UI features over immersion any day.

All that being said, so far the lack of a map hasn't been a big issue in Golf Story, so I think I will enjoy it despite not having a map. But do I think it would be better with a map? Absolutely I do. I really can't think of any games that involve exploration, that would not benefit from a map.

Yeah, I should do the same. I am slowly chipping away at the Mega Picross puzzles in Picross S, but I don't like them nearly as much as the regular puzzles. I also got stuck on the World 4 mid-boss in Mario+Rabbids (was it REALLY necessary to have 2 battles back to back with no save in between? Once again a parent-unfriendly design decision). There are other examples too; my progress in my current Switch games has stagnated a bit.

I'm just glad I finally got through Assassin's Creed Origins. Story is behind me and I'm making good progress on the side stuff, with about 60%-70% done now.

Part of my plan to buy less games is to finally get into Skyrim again.

I think AC Origins was mentioned in an article on Kotaku (or a similar site, they all look the same on my phone when I read articles while commuting), as doing away with the minimap from previous AC games and going with a compass. There is a writer on that site who is obsessed with trashing minimaps... personally I like them but I'm not 100% opposed to a compass either. I don't know when I'll finally get around to playing AC Origins. It's still sitting on my shelf in its shrink wrap. I really need to stop buying games I don't intend to play right away.

I don't care for mini maps, I'd much rather have a good full map in the menu that's accessable by the touch of one button.

Assassin's Creed Origins is easily the best AC game in years. It's very high on the list for me.

Previous AC games had a mini map AND a one-button full map. That's what I prefer. But I'm sure I'll do fine with the compass style instead.

I actually don't like too much information in my screen and I was used to turn off most stuff in the other AC games, and I do this in some other games as well. Open world games and racing games especially.

I think it's fine as long as players have an option to turn off or disable those extra on screen icons

Yeah, agreed. I generally like as much information as possible (unless it's just silly extraneous stuff), but options to accommodate different gamer preferences are always good.

To help un-derail the thread from my own derailing, I will also add that Golf Story is a very funny game. I'm still in the first area, but I've already encountered a lot of great moments.

Sure, it's just my own opinion that less is more, and I know others might feel differently. Just give me the choice to turn it off too, too many games have a non-optional hud.

You'll love the game throughout then, it's soo stupidly silly.

This is what I think of when they go with the excessive route for HUDs
