Was PS3 Friend List Limit Better?

You know the old days on the PS3, where we could only have 100 Friends on the list and had to delete others if we wanted to add new people?

Some would think damn that was stupid because they wanted to have more than 100 "Friends" on the list.

But as for myself I think it was kinda better, since you had to think of who you keep on the list or who not, not becoming and endless list of names most of which you will probably never speak again too or never play again with.

I have heard about "dunbars number" which says that humans could only maintain 150 "stable social relationships" anyways.

What do you think?

I thought the PS3 limit was 50? ?

Anyways, it doesn't really affect me personally - I don't tend to use the friends list to keep up with people, it's always been pretty much just a random list of folks who added me for reasons I don't really know... and stay on there unless they do something to warrant getting booted (which is pretty rare.)

The folks I would call real friends that are on that list I will chat to there, but all of them have multiple, better alternatives for communication.

It was 50 but then they increased it with a firmware update a few years back.

The 100 friends list limit is something I don't miss... If you ever tried to play an online game with someone on PS3 and wanted to invite them to your lobby in the games you wanted to play, they wouldn't show up for you if you had over 100 friends or if they had over 100 friends and it was a massive inconvenience. You can still set your own personal limit as to how many friends you want to have added on PSN. Of course right now I don't have over 100 friends and don't intend to because I dislike PSN as a primary means of communication with people and I doubt I'd ever have 100 people on my friends list that actively play games with me on PSN.

Wait, 150? I don't think I've even spoken to that many people in the last 5 years, let alone have a stable social relationship. But maybe it's just me.

yh PSN sucks for communication, its really outdated, thats why if i wanna play with some psn-friends i know longer we stwitched over to social media for messaging

@Silver-I-Chariot i have a maximum of one or two hands full i can call friends, u r not alone, quantity doesnt mean someone is more social than someone who prefers high quality friendshio :)

I didn't even know there was a limit, as back in the PS3 days I had like two friends on it, and one was my brother as I was never online. Now I have a lot more like from here, twitter etc. but certainly no where near 100, let alone 150.

As for a limit, I think people should be allowed to have as many friends as they want, so I don't agree with the limits and having to delete people. People who game online would probably have tons of friends. I don't do online multiplayer so I will likely never reach such high numbers of friends, but considering people have hundreds of friends/followers if no thousands on facebook, instagram etc. They probably would want to use PSN the same way

  • 1 year later...

100 is too low of a limit on PS4 and PS5 (so it's good they moved on), but I understand the 2,000 limit implemented for PSN from PS4 to the present. Though I'd truly like to know who could justify having more than say 500. I think I have around 25, and most of them I never play or chat with.

Overall I'd say it depends on the individual and/or the situation at hand. Back in the PS3 days, the friends list eventually got up into the 90s on my end. At one point on PS4, I wound up having nearly 300 people added. At one point during the mid 2010s, I had the No. 1 ranking on one of the leaderboards for Mortal Kombat X for 4 years and several people wanted to add me because of it. I don't know, I guess they wanted to say they knew No. 1 ranked person or something. Amusingly enough, that ranking wasn't really that extraordinary. I was simply the No. 1 player in one of Mortal Kombat X's five factions back then. Now that I'm on PS5, I've thinned the herd some and my list is back in the 90s. I'm also going to be quite cautious on who I add too after a really ugly incident on 4 Kings Casino a few weeks ago but that's a whole other story.

i really loved the ps3 friend list but it should of been a little more then 100. it still worked for the most part because not alot of games were out. i would log in and see what friends were on and i mostly used that list to play battlefield games nonstop. it felt more personal, i would just "chat" more often. see how people were doing, it was nice just to see people still around. now i dont have any common friends but 1, everyone else i added i facebook and they dont even game anymore

since ps4s layout i never even looked to see who was online, ever. i dont know how many friends i have added or anything. i pretty much dont look at the friend system at all. maybe because i hate mp games.

i think for its time it was good. i like the ps3 xmb menu the most because its basic and i can find everything and dont need youtube tutorials to switch a setting. with all the extra shit added now a days i guess its better. i cant remember the last time i actually deleted anyone. honestly theres games ive boosted with people for like 2 or 3 weeks and dont even remember who i finished the game with if i try to think back on it lol

I just don't know what the point of having 50, 100, 150 or even more PSN friends is... I don't know how you could manage the activity feed of all these players.

I suppose I don't play any live service games, when this might come in use.

Basically, I have real life friends & family only + any other player that I might be boosting with at the time (after that, then they're pretty much gone)...
