PSN SERVERS DOWN? 12/25/14

I'm not a specialist, but as far as I know it's bassicaly using many, many computers at once to send an 'atack' on servers of Sony (in this particular case). The servers are not able to defend themselfs and they crash

And all this just strengthens my theorhy => You DO NOT negociate with 'terrorists'. I'm using quotes here, becouse those are possibly just some dumb, fat kids. You find them, and make the f*ckers pay. That's it! Otherwise they'll come back and demand more. And that is something we do not want, do we?  No more political correctness*, no more being a nice guy. Find them, make them pay, end of story

* I'm a European, and all that 'political correctness' of US always makes me wonder. If you don't like something - say it! There's no reason to keep it inside you. But I'm not here to fight, just pointing that out :)

In my point of view that is really stupid because of what I see in the Internet the main reason those guys did what they do is to get tweets and a lots of followers on twitter or something like that, maybe they got lucky to help with those DDoS attacks idk but it´s just stupid and if those guys of "Lizard Squad" have something to do with did it they should be caught and punished !!!

Almost right!  Basically it's having thousands and thousands of simultaneous log-ins from fake accounts, so many simultaneously that the servers can't keep up and crash.  It doesn't matter if the accounts are real or not, because the server is still trying to recognize the user id and password and respond with an error message.

That's why it's hard to tell the difference between a true DDoS attack and just server overload on a busy day (like Christmas or launch day of a new MMO).  That's also why it's hard to guard against, and why "hackers" with minimal skills can pull these attacks off.  You just need a way to simultaneously attempt thousands of log-ins, and you don't even need real accounts to do it.

Unfortunately you'll always have the problem that a server can only handle so much traffic, and the "hackers" will just find a way to add more traffic than you can handle.  PS4, PS3, and Vita are definitely on different servers to manage their independent populations, and in fact, even within each system there are multiple servers.  That's why some people are getting on and others are not.

Ahhhhh interesting you sure seem to know what you´re talking about, we learn something everyday thanks to both of you for the explanation :)

I know this is off topic but I didn't want to start a new thread as it may be related, possibly.

PSN is also down for me on my VITA and my PS4 but my PS3 is fine and I have had no problems connecting that, using the store or syncing trophies whatsoever.

However, my question is regarding this site, when I go to update my profile I keep getting the following error message...

Updating is disabled due to maintenance.

As I have not seen any posts regarding this I thought I would mention this here, it only started today.

Any ideas please?

Maintenance is due to PSNP's servers getting a clean and it would be too much hassle to do many things at once. It won't be long so don't wrong.

People should have been enjoying their Christmas and Vacation anyway. It doesn't hurt to take a break from PSN :/

Well, for some people, vacation is their chance to play video games.  The rest of the time is already their "break" from PSN because of work, family and other commitments.  There are too many comments on non-gaming news sites about how we should all be thanking the hackers for "freeing us" from "sitting in dark rooms" - let's not propagate that nonsense on an actual gaming site.

Yeah..I knew what I said was flawed while writing it, but I was just too lazy to edit it.

To be fair though, there are some people like that, regarding the dark room and such. It helps some people and pisses off others, who work so much and have no time for games.

PS3 PSN down in JPN...got logged out a couple hours ago...hackers or not, i'm sure Sony is working their a$$ off to get it fixed...guess we'll just need to be patient and see what happens...it's like waiting for the bus to arrive during a snowstorm (fellow Canadians, y'all know what i'm talking about)...

can just imagine the poor Sony employees:

Boss - "Bam, need you to come into work...the servers are down again."

Bam - "But Sir, it's X-Mas holidays and I'm just about to chill out with my wife and kids."

Boss - "I understand Bam but Sony needs you right now."

Bam - "Dammit. Be there in the next hour, Sir."

Boss - "Thx Bam. See you soon then"

was able to log in just now...said my password was no longer valid...had to change then took about 10 tries to actually get signed in...see if it lasts...anyone else have success?...

I hope when they do turn the service back on they roll it out in regions like they did in 2011. If not it will get overloaded again when everyone tries to log in. It will probably be slow also especially downloading stuff. I have 3 psn cards i am waiting to use and I am sure there are a lot of others with psn cards ready to be used.

I'm in the UK and I was signed in for most of today, right now (I should be sleeping) it has decided to cut out with a message "PSN is undergoing maintenance"
Wasn't able to get online yesterday so not sure if it was down for me then but this is the first i'm hearing of PSN being down or any hacker group.
I'm on PS3 by the way.

So I've been offline on PS4 for over 36 hrs, I'm cool with it as I'm playing both Walking Deads offline. What I am not cool with is I'm apparently o my account in a group chat and I'm NOT there.

But seriously, Christmas may seem like a good time for this (hack or not) but hey we all need a wind down (some are getting wound up). Sony just better get the damn servers back up.

Sincerely, That Canadian Guy (This not at all serious)...Top section maybe.
