Popular Post ZitMeatloaf
Welcome to the super-duper official PSNP “Compile a Paragraph!” challenge! I know it's just what you've been waiting for, so let's get going! Q: Uhh, WTF kind of contest is this? Does it involve trophies? This is a trophy website, so it damn well better involve trophies! A: I’m so glad you asked! And why yes, it does involve trophies. After participating in (and enjoying) several of the other challenges on this site, I thought it would be fun to offer a different type of trophy challenge. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to compile a coherent paragraph using only the names of trophies you’ve earned on your profile. Q: That’s it, you want me to write a paragraph? A: Not really writing so much as compiling. You won’t be writing any original characters in your work; you’ll be using the names of trophies you’ve earned to hopefully put together a paragraph which tells a story. Q: Butt ZitMeatloaf, me already gud wit words. Righting words and paragrafs is ez! Y you make suck a dum kontest? A: You don’t even know all the rules yet, how do you it’s going to be easy? Also, there’s a $10 PSN gift code to be won, if that helps motivate you… Q: …fine, tell me the rules. A: You got it! For this contest, you’ll need to compile an entertaining paragraph using only the names of trophies you’ve earned on your profile. I’m only interested in using trophy names, not the trophy descriptions. For example, if you’d like to use the GTA V trophy “Welcome to Los Santos” in your paragraph, you can only use those characters, in that exact order. You will NOT be using the characters in “You repo’d a car and raced it through the heart of a sun-soaked metropolis” because those words are in the description, not the trophy name itself. The idea is to piece together trophy names in a coherent order to form enough sentences to have a full paragraph with a story. Q: Is there a minimum length requirement? A: No, but half-assed two sentence paragraphs probably won’t stand much of a chance of winning, will they? The goal is to try and tell an entertaining story. If you can form a brilliantly entertaining short paragraph using only a few sentences, go for it! That will stand a better chance of winning than a long, drawn-out snoozer of a paragraph that ultimately never says anything. Q: So I need to use the trophy names exactly as they’re written? A: Not quite exactly. It’s only the characters that must remain the same. I realize that using the trophy names exactly as they exist might be a tad too restrictive, so you can make two types of changes: capitalization and punctuation. Capitalization changes are exactly what they sound like. You are free to either capitalize lowercase letters, or de-capitalize uppercase letters however you’d like. Aside from the fact that a lot of trophies capitalize every word and nobody wants to read an entire paragraph of capital words, this also allows for some interesting and creative changes. For example, perhaps you are using a trophy name that features the word “hunter”, but you see a clever way of changing the meaning of the sentence (and enhancing your paragraph) by replacing the lowercase “h” with an uppercase one; “Hunter” has now become a character in your story! The reverse can also work. If a trophy name has the name “John” in it, but you want to use a lowercase “j” and change it to “john” because you’re really into slang terminology for toilets and you’ve found a way to incorporate it into your paragraph that way, you can do that as well. Punctuation changes are also unlimited. You can add, alter, or delete whatever punctuation you’d like. Freedom of punctuation is pretty much a requirement for this challenge to work at all, but once again this can allow for some creative changes. If a trophy name ends with a question mark, you can remove the question mark to make it a statement and not a question, and vice versa. Interrupt an already sentence-length trophy name with a period and make two sentences out of it. Going back to our hunter example, if a trophy name has the word “hunters” in it, you could capitalize the “h” AND add an apostrophe, turning it into “Hunter’s”. Now your character Hunter possesses something, or perhaps Hunter is now doing something. If you’re combining multiple trophy names to form one sentence, you’ll also need the freedom to add/remove commas and periods as needed. What you are NOT allowed to do is add, alter, or delete any characters, including numbers. You also can not interject a trophy name into the middle of another trophy name. That’s where the real challenge lies. Q: OK, I think I’ve got it. Can you give me a quick example? A: Sure. From my own profile, I have the following trophies: “Hello, Old Friend” from God of War 2018 “Thanks to You, Zack” from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion “… Has Joined Your Party!” from SBCG4AP Episode V: 8-bit is Enough With our allowable changes, I can combine these three trophy names to form the following two sentences: Hello, old friend. Thanks to you, Zack has joined your party. All of the characters remain the same, I’ve just changed the capitalization and punctuation to make it work. That’s the gist of what we’re going for. Q: So, I can only use the names of trophies that I’ve earned? A: Correct, only the names of trophies you’ve earned on whatever profile you use to post your paragraph. Q: Does the grammar need to be perfect? A: No, it doesn’t need to be perfect, but obviously it can’t be gibberish either. Use your best judgment. Q: Can I use the trophy names more than once? A: No, not unless you’ve earned multiple trophies with the same name and/or have completed multiple stacks of the same game. You can use the trophy name as many times as you’ve earned it on your profile. Q: Can I compile more than one paragraph if I want to? A: As long as it’s part of the same story/entry and you’ve got the available trophy names to make it work, you can compile as many paragraphs as you’d like. One paragraph is just the minimum. Q: Do I need to list every game and trophy name I use? A: It’s not a requirement, but it also can’t hurt. Feel free to include that information if you’d like. Q: Then how can you be sure people are following the rules? A: I’ll level with you on this one – I’m going to be relying primarily on the honor system. I just don’t have the time to be cross-checking every single entrant’s trophy lists with their paragraphs, now do I? Although really, I only need to check one entrant’s paragraph: the one I deem the winner! If the paragraph I choose as the winner seems suspiciously good to point that it might win the Pulitzer Prize, I might need to apply some extra scrutiny. Otherwise, I’ll just be spot checking some key words here and there. Q: A winner? Oh yeah, you’re giving away a gift code! How will that work? A: The paragraph I like best will win a $10 gift code! Q: What if I win the PSN code, and it doesn't work? Do I get another code? A: Nope. My wallet can’t afford to play that game! Q: What region will the code be for? Can I get a code from whatever region I want? A: This will be a U.S. code. While I recognize that this site has members from all over the world, and everybody is welcome to enter, getting a code from a region other than my own would be more expensive. You can always make a U.S. alt account to use the code (you may have one already), or feel free to trade it on your own for a code from a different region. Big games that are a bit older frequently go on sale for $10 or less, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something fun to use the code on. Q: There must be some sort of time limit on this thing. A: To win the contest and the code, yes. I realize this might take a little time, so prospective entrants will have one month from today to compile their paragraphs for consideration. That means that to be considered for the $10 gift code, paragraphs must be posted by April 30, 2023, at 23:59 U.S. Eastern Time. After that, the thread will still be open for others to post fun paragraphs if they’d like, but there’s only going to be one giveaway. I’ll bump the thread now and again to make as many people aware as possible. Q: Any tips for what might be considered a winning paragraph? A: In general, a humorous story is probably your best bet. Highbrow, lowbrow, medianbrow, whatever you’re able to make work the best. Who doesn’t love a humorous story? Although if you’re really trying to win a Nobel Prize in the field of super-serious storytelling or something, knock yourself out – maybe I’ll like it! Q: Anything else? A: Only one entry per account. And please make it clear when you are posting your entry, so I don’t think you’re just making a random comment. You can view your own trophies by looking at your trophy log and sorting alphabetically. You can also use the main list of all trophies tracked on PSNP and search for keywords within that list to see if you happen to have any trophies with the words you’re looking for. Unfortunately, you can’t search for keywords within your own individual trophy list, at least not at a site-level. After looking over my own trophies, I feel like the biggest challenge by far will be finding enough usable verbs in the correct conjugation to make sense. Just something to keep in mind to maximize the verbs you do find. Finally, have fun! Update - @Finch_III has been selected as the winner, but feel free to post new paragraphs for fun! Popular Post Charizarzar
As nobody has kickstarted this yet I'll just jump in. If this thread doesn't get many takers (which is a shame), I'm happy to forfeit any possible prize. It was fun to do anyway. My list has slim pickings for making long sentences so I just went for a conversation: "Honey, I'm home!" "Hey, good looking, I've been waiting for you. Who's hungry?" "What's for lunch, Iris? Feeeed meeeee!" "It's all coming together. BBQ spit roast sewer rat, cooked to perfection, sacrificial lamb soup in the pot, crab cakes out of the frying pan, porkchop sandwiches - my favorite when I was a kid. Bon appétit!" I thought you were tough." "I’m not scared. Silence, fool- Ow, my balls!" This is very dangerous territory, Buster. “Deeply sorry, Iris... all right, I'll give it a try”. “Do, or do not. There is no try”. *Gobble gobble* "Impressive. Most impressive. Tastes like chicken! I'm stuffed." "Just gettin' started. Popular Post Finch_III
I've only just seen this. What a great idea. I don't actually have a US account, so not sure what I'd do if I won, but it's fun enough that I'll give it a shot anyway. When I looked through my games, I found that coming up with a funny story was too challenging. So mine's, like, pretty bleak haha. I remember Phil and Jane. He's here, there, everywhere. Mr Popular, smooth talker, flirtatious. She was a good girl, no, the best girl. Kind hearted, inquisitive, committed. Just like that, there's a spark. Fireworks. We've all been there before. The end of the first year, a happy accident. "It's a healthy baby boy!". Welcome to the family, son. Married – a very special day. Their lives were intertwined. "You and me, two souls together forever, till death do us part". Year 2, everything changes. Trapped, claustrophobia, the stresses were unbearable. Two years of this. Year 4, a momentary lapse of reason: the other woman, a bit on the side. The first, not the last. A knife to the heart; some wounds never heal. There was no turning back, why fight it? "You don't have to do this. I want to talk about it. Don't go." Easy? Not this time. She didn't want to, but it was inevitable, one way or the other. "Goodbye," she quietly says.
