Naming Characters

As you know, some games let you pick the name of your character (Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, to name a few off the top of my head). I have the hardest time with this. I want the name to be good, since I'll be living with it for several weeks/months. I also prefer to have different names for characters in different games. Sometimes I'll spend the better part of my first night of a game trying to come up with just the right name.

How do you choose your character names? Do you use your own name, your PSN ID? Where do you take your inspiration from? Or do you usually go with the game's default option?

I don't really see the point in choosing a good name for MOST ps3 rpg's. Because they'll hardly get used. For example Mass effect. When in the game does you use, your own name? that's right never because everyone calls you sheppard :D So i mostly just stick with the default or just Zone.

Now i do have this problem in MMO's :D

If it's a male character I usually name him Bhekifa, however in Mass Effect I just kept the default name. Ever since I kept the default human female mage name in DA:O I tend to name all my females Solona. If it's an MMO I'll stick with Bhekifa, or BhekifaZ, or if it's a female I'll usually name them after a Pornstar such as Capri Anderson since all my characters usually end up looking like they do adult videos.

I just use my name, Predrag. It works for RPGs, since it's a unique sounding name. I can be Predrag the archer. As opposed to something like Mike or John.

On the rare occasion I play as a female character, I name her Layla. Because Layla is my favorite female wrestler, and I suck at thinking of other names.

Use to just go with the main character name, but now I name everything Odyssey to signify it's me playing if i recorded it for some reason.

Otherwise for games where you build a character like The Elder Scrolls or pick a class.

I always go for the warrior/barbarian type class and name him Guts, after the main protagonist in the anime Berserk.

I get mine from the names of characters in books I've read that I liked. For instance, the name of my sorceress in Soul Sacrifice was Whisper. People asked me if was because I liked Fable, because the name of the main character's friend in that game was Whisper. No, I got the name from a character in The Black Company by Glen Cook. Anyway, the point is I try and find a name that fits into the universe in the game.

Depends on the type of game. When it is was Mass Effect I kept it as John Shepard as I also kept in the default character look as well. I have a number of character names from my WoW days that I use in games such as DC or ESO (When it's finally out)
