What do you Think Will be Considered Mainstream/Trend For the PS4 this Gen?

Well Since the PS4 isn't a year old yet, and seeing how consoles tend to at least last 6 years.

Last Gen's PS3 had a trend of what was considered mainstream....For instance In NA(USA) its FPS games. In Japan it was RPG & Visual Novels(Kinda always is).

I don't know what was the PS2's Since Internet wasn't popular @ the time for us to know this.

Anyway what do you think will be considered Mainstream this new Gen of PS4?

If I had to make a guess it might be more "Indie games", since Sony has tried pushing them more, while gaining more Indie Developer partnerships on their side. Not to mention granting some the spotlight in "IGC".

I know some don't want that, because they still want AAA titles; but some indie games are actually Funner & Cheaper then some AAA titles we end up paying 4-6 times the Indie game's price.

So this is just My opinion or guess, so what is yours?

I used to think that FPS's were just a fad, but at this point, I think they're always going to be popular. They're going to be like the football of video games. It's the most popular sport, and nothings going to stop the millions upon millions of people from being into it. It's just not going to be replaced by anything.

So, I guess I'd have to say things aren't really going to change, but this past gen had some variety in it's "mainstream" games. There were action games like inFamous and Batman, RPGs like Skyrim and Mass Effect, fighting games like Street Fighter IV and Injustice, and of course shooters. Sure, shooters were dominant, but there was no lack of other games genres in the mainstream.

I think the mainstream type of game will be open world/sandbox

Why? Because consoles are only getting more powerful so it's to expect that PS4 and X1 can handle open world games with inside builiding free roam

^ Exactly that, Including individual interactive dialogue with EVERYONE you encounter

I think the future of gaming in these PS4 console generation is going to be COD. I know there are a lot of haters out there but you cannot deny the amazing and overwhelming success that the franchise has have since MW1 in 2007. They are either number 1 or 2 best seller every year. Bottom line, sales is the only barometer to indicate whether a game and/or franchise is successful or not. Sure, there are very successful Indie games out there and I enjoy many of them, but sales is everything. You are going to see this AAA franchise go to a new level in this new frontier we call PS4. COD will be the only large franchise (other than Assassins Creed and Sports franchises - and no I didn't forget Battlefield) to survive this next console generation.

Sales is everything, long live the greatest franchise in the history of modern gaming - COD. There's no one that can dispute nor deny the success and it would be foolish to discount their future.

Why wouldn't battlefield survive? It has been around forever and unless EA goes bankrupt I don't see why it would go away.

Also why are those the only franchises to survive? What about Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Sims, Halo, LittleBig Planet, Elder Scrolls etc. I don't really see any of those disappearing any time soon.

I think FPS games will fall out of the focus of mainstream gaming. Sure, they'll still sell like cupcakes but so do sports games and those don't really have much of an impact on gaming culture. I'm hoping for the RPG to make a big comeback since there weren't that many last gen, but considering the influence that indie games will have on this generation, i say the platformer is getting stronger, maybe similar to how popular they were on ps1. I am also curious about how art games will influence gaming culture, if they do at all. It doesn't seem unlikely gaming will have a change of image, similar to how comics were renamed graphic novels to be taken seriously as an artform.

Thank you for your response Mr. Mayus. BF won't survive because only a select few AAA titles will make it and COD will outplay BF with a stronger campaign, much better MP, and less glitchy. BF has been around but it's days are numbered as a BF game. EA doesn't have to go bankrupt for them to "go in another direction with the franchise".

Regarding your other titles; Pokemon (really? When the 5 years grow up, they will be embarrassed they even played that Dumb franchise), Mario will survive yes but with the Wii Z maybe, Zelda the same, Halo yes, LBP no way after 3, and Elder Scrolls no way after the online fails by end of year. Pull this message up when I nail down these one by one. Thanks again for responding, your answers were really cute but a little naive IMO.

What's naive is to think 1 generic series is going to define a console generation, yes cod sells but 3 months after release who still talks about it while you have games like the last of us that had/has everyone talking to this day and in my experience I can asssure u that innovation brings succes not sale numbers.

Online

Open World

Coop

Multiplayer

This exactly -Pretty much defines the directions mainstream games will go in. Some have been there for a while, but the true potential of what TheVolloxx mentioned will only have the chance to come into fruition with this gen.

COD, BF and all of these well produced cookie-cutter games will always be part of the mainstream. They are on their own track almost as they are churned out continuously and dropped. I call them fast food games. There are also many other IPs which are being heavily invested in with regards to franchise based games. Some of the largest game companies in the world are investing in other games also to create new franchises. Surivial as you mentioned has nothing to do with it.

Sales isn't everything and is by no means the only barometer to define success - a game doesn't have to sell millions to influence a large demographic of people, all it does is influence whether they buy the next iteration of the game.

Sales only dictate financial success, but the true mark of success in gaming is emulation - if a game doesn't make millions, but goes on to influence other game developers with the games they make, that is far more of a success. Leaving a Legacy that influences 5 more years of game development is far more successfull than making a throwaway game that makes a quick buck then vanishes until the next throwaway game is developed.

The way games like COD and BF are produced is reminiscent of the way movies were made in the 30's. They may display the latest in technological innovation, but they are still brought as if on a production line. Don't get me wrong, they are enjoyable (used to play MW2 alot in another life) but to say they are the 'future' is a little misguided.

[in response to xzero4812].  Wow, who's naïve?  You think because it's a fun game and everyone is talking about it gets game companies making more?  You must not live on planet Earth dude, sales is everything.  Sales drives future iterations, not "everyone is talking about it".  COD is made year after year because millions and millions of people buy it, not because everyone is talking about it.  You may not like COD but it's successful because of the amazing formula it has.  People don't continue to buy a copy of COD every year because its generic, that's a narrow-minded vision you and other "hardcore" gamers have, whatever hardcore means.  My favorite moronic argument is "it's the 12 year olds that are buying it".  Ok, even if you're right - and no one could ever prove that either way - but even if you're right, SO WHAT!  They are smart that they are producing a game that continues to evolve.  When COD started, those 12 year olds were 4 and 5 year olds (or younger) - smart companies keep their product going year after year.  Another argument is "it's all marketing".  Sure, marketing is a key to success but you have to have a good product in order to sell the "same game" year after year, as some would say.  No one is going to buy COD every year if the game was crap.  Yes, there would be sales, but no where near in the millions and millions they do now.  I love the "parents will buy it just because of the name due to good marketing" argument too.  Yep, very true, parents and grandparents and others outside the gaming industry buy games solely on marketing.  No way, though, would that add up in the millions of games sold if the game was lousy.  They would have 150,000 sales of ignorant purchasers, not 20 million each year, or more.

Thanks for playing with your one liner to set the record straight with me but your naïve vision doesn't work on me like it does with the rest of the sheep in here.  And yes, this series with a select few of the ones I mentioned above, will define PS4 and the rest of this current gen cycle of consoles/PCs.  Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good for millions of others and the industry, bro.

You say the true mark of success in gaming is emulation.  Ok, sounds great.  When you sell 20,000 copies of a game that costs you more than a million dollars to produce that will be hugely influential on the gaming industry for years to come, remember that great quote when you're shuttering your doors because you don't have enough sales to stay employed.  You'll be a great martyr for the industry.

Sure, Indie games can do well, no argument here.  And I think there is huge innovation there without them going out of business, but like you said yourself above, sales dictates financial success and sets up the next iteration. Why would the want to setup the next iteration, even an Indie game?  So that they can make MORE SALES!  Why does anyone work in this industry or any other, to make more money.

Let me ask you a question, ever turn down a raise for doing the same job you did yesterday, assuming you're old enough to hold a job?  No one turns down more money, no one goes in and says "oh no, I'm good with my current salary, obviously I was ok with my current salary since I'm still working here anyways".  NO.  Financial success is everything, thus, sales is everything.  Wrong argument, bro.

You and the rest of the cronies on this site can try and push your naïve influence on unsuspecting kids that don't know any better but I've been sent in to destroy that weak and inaccurate argument.  Good luck without a "production line" as you mentioned above, you won't have an industry without it.  Get rid of AC series, COD series, even the BF series immediately would be devastating for the industry.  Yes, it would survive, but not the way it looks to us today.  You'd have a bunch of awesome innovation and a very small group of players playing them because you'd lose the major (i.e. mainstream) audience.  Like E3, gone!  Like the awesome competition we see today, gone!  COD will define this generation console, whether you come kicking and screaming or not.

Sales is everything, remember that.  You will never win an argument or in life without it.  I hope you win the lottery because that's what you have going for you right now.

So if you're looking to troll this isn't the site all I'm saying is that call of duty is not a great game its a good game. I never once mentioned age demographics and for anyone to say that call of duty franchise was the defining game of last generation is completely off base and disrespect to the countless other developers who brought entertaining games
