Maybe the graphics look "crisp" but they are dull and boring. Shades of green and brown is about it

Separate graphics and art direction in this argument.

Sony has had a monster of awesome exclusives in the past four years, you can cross play without needing your TV via the Vita and now we have PSVR. This might possibly be Sony's best console after the PS1, compared to the lackluster PS3 where they were slow out the start, expensive, and behind the XBox360, I completely disagree about Sony being lacklustre, to me it feels like the opposite.

Granted, I'd also love to see new ISP, but look at the XBone for exclusive games and new IP and you'll see what I mean, practically none over there...

Don't even get me started on that one.

  1. Starcrunch purchases game he's been waiting on for months.
  2. Races home, nearly killing himself in the process
  3. Opens box, puts in disc (anticipation GROWS!)
  4. Installation of game begins (oh, come on!!!)
  5. Patch 1.01 must download, and install (<sigh>)
  6. Starcrunch decides to watch porn instead, and vows never to buy a game on day 1 again

Which is why you wait a few weeks. If you have to have the game, then wait a few days.

This is why I don’t buy into the preordering crap anymore. It worked back in the PlayStation 2 days and early Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 days. Nowadays AAA games have become so big and such a big risk to make that it’s very rare for any of them to be finished on launch day. Which goes back to the Day 1 patches.

The way I buy my games is either during a sale, several months after the game is released, or when a GOTY Edition has been released. Kingdom Come: Deliverance I had my eyes set on well before release, but once the reviews and news poured out that it was a giant broken mess I waited. Now there’s a Complete Edition coming out with all DLC included, and with the bug fixes. If you were interested in the game, now’s the time to think about it.

I miss the days when a game was complete, and you had one or two expansion packs at most. My how the times have changed.

I miss the variety of the PS2 (or even of the PS3) era. Don't get me wrong, some of the games that have come out recently have been absolutely mindblowing and there's no doubt about that, but I feel like Sony (and all the other big publishers) just don't care about variety in their lineup anymore. Sony, for example, used to have Arcade Racers, Racing Sims, FPS, JRPG, RPG, MMOFPS, TPS, Platformers, Action/HnS, all that stuff. Now it's down to TPS, RPG, JRPGs and the occasional racing sim (GT). R&C is supposed to get a new entry by the end of this gen according to leaks and rumors, so I guess you could add another platformer to the list. I just feel like Sony doesn't wanna have a wide portfolio encompassing all kinds of tastes anymore. I'm happy with what I have, but I wish there was something more.

The last few years have been slow in releases but last year was a great year for games. This year, however, with the exception of KH3, there really hasnt been much to look forward too and the ones that have come out have been getting questionable reviews. Example, Anthem and Days Gone have been getting reviews that are not up to what the hype was when these games were first shown. The OP is complaining that we are getting a lot of the same stuff, which is fair, but as other people have said this is an industry wide problem. Also, I think Sony is pumping the breaks on what they are showing because they want to put the games they are currently working on for the PS5.

Still have to download the patches whenever you get it, waiting doesn't change that. Only means there'll be more when you do get it.

But yeah day one patches are annoying especially when a game has been continually delayed.

A number of these have gone to the indie game market and get a lot more success on Steam.

Cities: Skylines looks intriguing and is basically a modern day SimCity, after the complete disaster that was SimCity 5. But apart from some new releases I really don't feel excited about any of it anymore.

Ratchet & Clank 2016 did have some platforming, but it was definitely a lot easier and a lot less grindy than the PS2 era Ratchet & Clanks. It's supposedly based on the movie, which absolutely sucked. Plus I hated the way they redesigned Dr Nefarious.

Eh, indies have most of the time absolutely atrocious production values so that stuff I usually don't touch.

Indies are more than just old school Metroidvanias. Saying that is a bit short sighted.

People need to look beyond that and expand their horizons. I played Furi recently and I consider that to be an excellent indie game. There’s plenty on Steam that people just skip because it’s either not popular or it’s too niche.

Seeing that you play almost nothing but AAA games, I can just as well say most are all just glorified open world polished turds wanting to grab more of my money. I’m just as guilty by saying that, but it’s simply my opinion.

There’s nothing wrong with having more variety, but I think we can admit that this generation is focused on what the OP was talking about, rather than the variety we got back in the day.

If you include Indies I'd say this generation was pretty diverse, at least far more diverse than the sixth gen. Indies have come into their own now and while a large chunk are shovelware trash you get really good unique gems like Cosmic Star Heroine and Celeste. As for AAA gaming today, I'm fine with it for the most part, you're not going to see anything groundbreaking when a game has a budget that's almost in the hundreds of millions but it's delivered solid games like God of War and REmake 2. My only beef would be with the Battle Royale trend and the push for games as a service and the shoehorning of multiplayer in games that were really meant to simply be single player. EA says single player is dead but Capcom just made millions off two single player games, hope that sends a message.

Well as I said indies are more than just old retro 2-D platformers and Metroidvanias, if you dig deeper you'll find more than that. But I understand that indies aren't for everyone, and I will argue that they have always been pretty niche to begin with.

Cosmic Star Heroine and Celeste both take on what video games of the past did. Cosmic Star Heroine being of course a flashback to Chrono Trigger, which I consider to be the most iconic JRPG of all time, back when Square was the shit. Celeste is an extremely challenging 2-D platformer without Assist Mode, and it pays tribute to games like Super Mario Bros 3, which I appreciate.

Comparatively, AAA games especially these past two - three years are just too much of a big risk to try anything substantially different. Back in the PlayStation 2 era you had all sorts of AAA games with a big variety. Metal Gear Solid 2, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, Hitman: Blood Money, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, none of those games were anything like each other because they were all different.

Nowadays you have the same uniform controls and setup for virtually the vast majority of AAA games. I'm a long time fan of God of War, but God of War 2018 took on a more formulaic approach even though Santa Monica basically drove the Greek mythology thing into the ground. I appreciate that it does something a bit different but I found the gameplay to be boring and dull. Days Gone from what I'm hearing is much of the same as Marvel's Spider-Man, the big difference is the setting and the aesthetic. The PlayStation 2 era and early Playstation 3/360 generation had different enough games to where I felt they didn't just blend in with one another.

It's mostly TPS, FPS, third person open world games and JRPGs.

I'm not just talking about old school metroidvanias. What I mean is that few indies look as good as Hellblade (if we wanna keep it in the indie space). I play indies or generally experiences I wouldn't risk adding to my PSN profile on Steam, so i stand by what I said because I know what indies look like most of the time.

As for my games, you're half right. Some of those are ows and are empty and barren wastelands with some busywork on the side, but others are linear racing games, platformers and whatnot. Even then, among the ows there are still some very good ones.

What I was saying in my first post in this thread is that AAAs should be more varied (and particularly Sony's first party offer), because as I said I don't count indies, as they aren't really able to compete on production values. From my point of view, this generation isn't very varied, because indies might as well not exist, the way I look at the gaming market.

Yup I feel exactly the same, I'm hardly "hyped" for any of the games that are about to come out for their CensorStation and the more I think about their horseshit with censoring Japanese games the more I think about moving to the Nintendo Switch. I really miss the times when getting a new game was exciting and I knew what I'm paying for is a full experience.

Whaat? Did you even experience the PS2 era? It had more variety than any other gen. There was so many games in so many genres that you simply didn't know what to get.

That’s fine if indies aren’t your cup of tea. But not all of them are low budget.

People look at games like Undertale that had literally a shoestring budget attached to it and think “this is what I expect from indies”. But it got warm reviews when it released, and I definitely plan to buy it in the coming future.

Saying indies shouldn’t exist according to the gaming market is a bit brash. I know, a lot of people out there don’t bother with most of them, but there’s a lot more than just old retro 8-bit, 16-bit styled platformers and Metroidvanias.

Sony did offer some variety in the first few years. But ever since Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn it’s been the same open world fare. Detroit: Become Human at least offered a visually stunning linear experience, as The Order: 1886 and Until Dawn did before. From what I heard a number of people didn’t like Detroit.

I will take a linear experience over a boring open world that drags on after you do the main story. Ratchet and Clank 2016 was just the right length. It didn’t pad itself with a bunch of collectible crap and it didn’t have 50 - 100 sidequests spread out over a huge map. It was fun, enjoyable and didn’t take itself too seriously.

People have praised the shit out of Assassins Creed: Odyssey, but it’s far too big and of course, like other Ubisoft games, there’s a ton of crap in it. That’s just me. But this is what we’ve seen a lot these past couple years.

Honestly I just don’t see the point in preordering. Waiting a few months gives you amble time to buy the Complete Edition of a game that has it’s bugs and glitches patched out, making for a better experience for you as the player.

I used to preorder to get the sweet collectors edition statue for game franchisers I like the most until I realised you can wait, get the game later with all the glitches/bugs fixed and then purchase the same statue on eBay for usually a cheaper price.

Seeing Day 1 patches and having to download them at launch day is rather ridiculous to be honest.

I like pre-ordering because I lack the self control to wait even longer after waiting months or years for a game. Plus collector's editions are awesome and now season passes are becoming part of them too.

As for glitches, always been pretty lucky and never had too many dramas with them.

100% agree that day one patches are a pain in the arse and really shouldn't be needed. Game should be complete when you buy it but unfortunately this isn't how things are anymore.

Preordering GOTY and Complete Editions seem to be the only valid choice.

As I mentioned, it worked early on in the PS3/360 generation because you can expect most games to be finished via retail. You didn’t have to download 10 - 20 updates, and DLC was generally rare. By the latter half of the generation we started seeing a lot more updates, as well as two - three DLC packs for some games.

Today you can expect Ubisoft to release at least two - four DLC packs, which comes at a price of $30 - 40 for the Season Pass. Add the $60 price tag for a new AAA game and that’s over $100 to get everything.

So why in the hell would I pay that much for one game when I can wait? The Complete Edition is not only generally cheaper but it comes with all DLC content, so they are better value. Yeah, by that point the game isn’t new per se, but I very rarely play any new game.

Preordering works for people who only buy 3 - 5 games a year, play them for the story and the multiplayer and moves on, not bothering with anything else. For people like myself, that is rather counter intuitive.

I'll say it again, I know not all of them are low budget but a large majority are and I really can't be bothered trying to dig the few rough diamonds from the pile.

Then you're just lazy, because you can't bother to do your research to find a hidden gem.

I say this all the time to people on Twitter who bitch about modern music. They need to do their research and not just assume all modern rap is the same gimmicky garbage.

I agree with most that Lil Wayne, Future and Kayne West are all shit. Their music sucks, and one easily thinks Hip Hop is basically that because they listened to their music and didn't listen to anything else. There are rappers out there who do good music, but it's probably likely they're not the ones selling millions of records and setting some YouTube phenomenon because their music video got over 100 million views.

There is shit in the underground music scene, but there's some pretty good music that I frankly think is better than most of anything out today that is mainstream. And I feel the same way with video games.

People who say they're tired of the AAA game industry need to look beyond what Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Square and Konami put out. Capcom has made some good stuff but they still make a lot of crap, I just think they're a little better than the others. The Yakuza series looks far more interesting and I hope to play those games at some point.

Of course, I have a soft spot for the older games, because they were from a simpler time. That's just me.

After reading all ten pages in this thread, there is a common misconception here. People blaming industry/devs for focusing on DLCs/Season Passes/crappy MP games rather than new IPs. This is the gamers' fault, we are to blame. We vote with our wallets and simply because people choose to pay for all DLCs/SPs, etc. the industry is going to be pushing it more and more because it generates enough profit for very little work. It's exactly the same situation as with lootboxes; the problem is people buying them.

I think there are still plenty of awesome games being published, maybe you just don't want to see them.
