[Resolved] PS3 P2P Online Games Currently Down - Trophy syncing unaffected

Haven't tested Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, but I'd assume that's down too.

Peer to peer still needs a central server to function, or else nobody will be able to find each other. All the games now down probably use a PSN service for that to function. Unless it was willfully and silently shut down to mess with us, I expect it to come back online whenever the server in question gets rebooted.

It might be a sad thing to think about - particularly for many trophy hunters who still use their PS3s (of which I'm one, at least occasionally)...

...but I do think this is something of a "wake-up call" (or, at least, a "check your bags call"!) for PS3 players.

 

Not because I necessarily think this is the actual beginning of the end for PS3 online, but because I think this has to be seen as portent in some respect.

 

 

This might not be anything permanent this time....

... but I do suspect that when (not if, when) the PS3 online functionality does end, it will probably look like this initially.

 

I doubt there will be some grand announcement and lengthly advance warning - more than likely it will start with a glitch or hiccup, some servers going down, and eventually Sony just announce that it it isn't worth the trouble to bring them back.

 

 

 

I'm not sure what the current numbers for PS3 online active users is right now, but I do know that it was in pretty steady decline for all of 2021-2022 (courtesy of the Leaked internal chart below)....

 

 

 

If that trend continued in the same manner (and I would assume it would, as the line was pretty steady), then it wouldn't be outrageous to assume that now, in mid 2024, the number of PS3 active users is likely in the hundreds of thousands, rather than the millions.

 

 

That is not nothing, of course - its still a pretty sizeable chunk considering the age of the console -  but it would place the number of PS3 online active users at less than 1% of total PSN users...

...and there is almost certainly a threshold percentage on a chart somewhere within Sony where the "cost/benefit analysis" shows the goodwill they accrue by keeping those servers active is less valuable to them than the cost of running and maintaining them, and where the number of users drops low enough that they don't see sufficient downside to disappointing them.

Only just heard of this issue right now.

 

Even though I got nearly all my online trophies done on PS3 (only need Borderlands Presequel when I get around to it), I really hope this isn't a permanent thing.

 

I'm sure if Sony had plans to shut down the PS3 online, they would have made a major announcement about it rather than quietly shut everything down at once without notice. Which is why I'm hopeful that whatever is going on is a temporary issue and that it will go back online!

 

My biggest fear is PS3 and Vita trophy syncing not working in the near future. That would just be incredibly sad because I still need to get through around 80 PS3 games in my backlog to be finally done with the console.

Brutal Legend also gets an error while trying to access custom or matchmaking. 

 

I think it's safe to call anything without dedicated servers boned.

Not sure why some of you are panicking. If you can still access the ps3 store and buy dlc for the online games affected then it's all good unless Sony plans to refund everyone. 

 

You can't sell dlc for games that no longer works and it's not legal either.

 

I'm sure it's just a bug or maintenance.

Deadfall Adventures: Heart of Atlantis PS3 also don't work. When you try create or find lobby you return in main menu.

Deep Black PS3 wont work either, error when you try select Multiplayer

For Deadfall- makes sense. Players host a room in any of those modes. Odd timing to have helped players with the 6 player trophy for that game the other day. This now reminds me to message them this thread.
