WHITE: Night in the Woods

This might sound odd, but I loved the sense of melancholy in this game. I didn't drop out from college like Mae did, but I was the only one in my weird group of high school friends to go more than an hour away for school, so I related to the whole 'returning home and everything is the same yet also changed' vibe. The game's dialogue was well done, and I appreciated playing the game through a second time and picking up on lots of the foreshadowing. Getting through Day 4 two additional times for the platinum was a bit annoying, though. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this game.

 

BROWN: Concrete Genie

I picked this game because it was on the PS+ Catalog and a lot of other people used it for either Tan or Brown on their Kaleidoscopes. I was pleasantly surprised by this short game. I had fun 'painting' designs on various wall surfaces and how the art had a magical/moving aspect to it. I'm also a sucker for anything where you get to make your environment a lot more colorful. ? The plot is definitely meant for more of a preteen/teenager demographic and its simplicity annoyed me a bit, but it was also mostly absent from the majority of chapters which was nice. Being able to free-roam at the end for any missed trophies is always nice, too.

So... Kena probably will be after this one (I will change my black for that one) and then... Transistor->yooka and Laylee -> arafel. Yeah, that seems right. For now, I'm going to change the order for sure, I always do that hahahah.

Another colour is knocked off the kaleidoscope card, this time it's Blue for Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC.

 

I don't have too much to say about this one. It's very much the same as the base game for Horizon Forbidden West, and I found that game only ok. I don't know why, but the magic from Zero Dawn just isn't there for me with the sequel, and while it was nice to have some new content (the final boss fight was actually pretty good), everything else just felt pretty mediocre. 

 

On to the next one!

Almost May update!

 

So, for my YELLOW entry, I present Tales from the Borderlands.  Set on the planet Pandora, you play several roles with the main one being the company employee, Rhys Strongfork. Teaming up with a few questionable characters, which are also known as vault hunters, your search for the keys to open the vaults starts your adventure.  Enjoyed the game and I found myself laughing at the dialogue and storyline.  QTEs not difficult and the game has a robust save and well placed checkpoints.

Purple: Life is Strange True Colours

 

 I really like how they did the story in this one and the improved facial animations really help to heighten certain story beats in this one. I don't want to go into the story just in case of any spoilers, but if you liked the first game I think you'll like this one too, it's an improvement over LIS 2 for me easily. The graphics in this game are really beautiful too, and the soundtrack fits the game really well. One of my favourite things about the LIS games is that they give you the ability to 'vibe check', just sitting in to take in the atmosphere of the game, in a beautiful gaming scenery, with music in the background that fits, with just you and no other characters around. These quiet moments really give you the time to think about what's happened, or it does for me anyway, and it's something I really appreciate about these games.

After getting the platinum in GTA IV and feeling a bit burned out I needed a game that was pretty relaxed so this was the perfect fit!

 

Tan: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

 

This one was an interesting detective style walking simulator game. The atmosphere was really creepy at certain points, which definitely fit well with the tone of the game. This game looks beautiful considering it came out in 2014. I played this one just in time before it went off the PS Premium/Extra tier. If you like walking simulators give this one a go!

I'm not 100% sure but I believe AstroBot will only count as black because of the background.

Best to wait for the Doc to confirm it though ?

It's been a while! But, second game done: Transport Fever 2 for light blue. I think it's most fitting because of all the blue colors in the sky and on the train, however I think light blue outweighs just blue, objections welcome though. Initially, I thought about building a Vita-only chart but I failed this challenge at game #2 already but TF2 is too good to not be part of my chart and since it's not available on Vita... ?

 

If you liked Cities Skylines but always felt you want to have more control about how transport is done this might be the game for you! A thing that always bothered me about CS was that I can't really control how and where transport is happening and TF2 just nails it. You can place signals for railways and build turnout tracks, control where trucks/ships/busses drive and the best part, most of the time vehicles don't drive into or through each other. It's not perfect but the... let's call it "scenery realism" (if that makes sense) is on another level. I could sink hours in CS to "just do a little bit here, optimizing something there" but TF2 gives you so much more options to do that, and to sink even more hours. I spent hours just optimizing stuff and admiring my progress afterwards, and it happened more than once that I forgot the time and fiddled for 5+ hours even though I just wanted to "fix it real quick", and that is a good thing! If you're into CS-typed games and are more interested in the transport aspects rather than citybuilding definitely have a look at TF2. I'd recommend to start the game with the (quite lengthy) campaign because it acts as a tutorial but also as a little history lesson about how transportation evolved in the world. After the campaign you can jump right into free game where the game unveils its full potential (well you could before but the mechanics will be overwhelming without a tutorial first). Trophywise it was fun to just play and don't concentrate on trophies imho, even though some trophies were a little out of place because it's unlikely you'll get that in a normal playthrough. But most trophies are very much attainable on a blind playthrough and I really liked that aspect.

Yeah, Astrobot should be a Black, as it is a black and white only image, so the colour falls to the background.

 

I don't like to only say no though without offering some positives...

... I think shifting Astro to Black, Hogwarts to Blue, Gleylancer to Light Blue (as it's darker than Hogwarts,) and Monsters of the Deep to Grey, would let Toem slot into White, which feels a little more on point.

 

If you'd prefer to keep as is though, Astro could always be a hold-over for Black on a second Rainbow... ?

Had planned on saving Blue for Horizon Forbidden West.... but what the hell - since I'm now playing FFVI, which will work for Maroon, decided to kill two birds with one stone this time, and fill both the Blue and Deep Purple slots!

 

A decent, if slightly too streamlined campus management sim, in the old Bullfrog "Theme-Park / Theme-Hospital" model.

 

Pretty charming, nicely set up, and fairly funny in an incredibly British-y way - it does suffer a bit from a lack of depth in the actual simulation, but makes up for it (to some extent) by just being silly and fun, and pretty fast-paced as management sims go.

Knocked out maroon today and orange yesterday. I never planned on playing Tales of Arise but after having so much fun playing Scarlet Nexus I decided to give it a shot given that it's the same developer. I definitely made the right call, both games were a blast to play. Scarlet Nexus is currently my favorite game of 2023.

 

I'm dreading going back and finishing up Valkyrie Elysium. I may have to swap that out for another deep purple game.

I mean, the frame of the photo is definitely brown, I'd say it's not a stretch.

An update at long last! Since these are all RPGs, don't expect too many updates before the holidays.

 

 

Complete Games (and the Legendary Pokemon represents):

• Light Blue: Asdivine Cross (Dialga from Pokemon Diamond)
• Orange: Disgaea 4 Complete+ (Solgaleo from Pokemon Sun)

Finally finished a BEAST of a Disgaea game. For those who think Disgaea 5 is easy, be grateful you didn't touch Disgaea 4 or this title, which is Disgaea 4 + DLC. The trophies are a bit easier than the original Disgaea 4(you don't have to defeat every type of Pirate) but it's still grindy, requiring you to get every weapon and item in the game, see every skill, and collect all of the pirate ship parts. Oh, and you have to kill two superbosses in Land of Carnage mode, meaning they have max stats.

 

It took Green Z-Saber 40 hours to earn every trophy with a speedrun set of mind. This took longer for me as I don't have the mental capability to do a speedrun.

Not really seeing Elden Ring as a Yellow, but...

 

...if you stuck Artful Escape into Yellow, Moved ER to Green, Void Terrarius to Light Green, and Eiyuden Chronicle to purple, that would keep all the same games, and work better, I think!

Nice list! I finished Scarlet Nexus this month. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan – and I have Tales of Arise locked and loaded too, so now I'm a bit hesitant to start it if they're quite similar!

Good call. I'll swap colors and repost after I get another plat or two. Maybe I'll finish up Subliminal this week. I hate having to watch guide videos for collectables but at least it's short.

Very similar, at least in terms of story telling. Tons of side dialogue and I'd say Arise has more anime tropes than Scarlet Nexus did.  Combat is simplified in Arise as well. Towards the end I was spamming the same two abilities when farming levels and endgame content.
