Yeah, it's this. What makes Death of the Outsider a "side game", but God of War Ascension not a "side game"? For that matter, what makes anything a side game/spinoff? I think Uncharted is a good example of the series feature. The "main series" includes all four numbered games, plus Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy. Namely, Lost Legacy was originally planned as DLC but eventually released as its own mini-campaign, just like many others. But all six games are shooter adventure games within the same story universe. The only "side game" is Fight for Fortune, which is an entirely different format (a card game?) with Uncharted branding slapped onto it.
