PS4 Announcement - Thoughts

Coming from someone who was skeptical and pessimistic on the next-gen and what they had to offer, I'm truly impressed mainly with the PSN "Profiles" () system with you being able to upload your picture and having more of a personal "connection", per se, with your friends. As for a person who consistently replies to messages and am always helping with games that others require assistance on, it gives me the sense of joy being able to connect more to others and what not.

However saying all of that, can someone please answer what's the deal with backwards compatibililty? I can't play the amazing jaw-dropping Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception on the PS4?! I had stuff to do and was immediately tuned in when I got the chance, sorry for the idiotic question. Also, will the PS3 still be able to upload trophies and connect to online even when PS4 is availible? Or is it dead day one? Online only and digital games? New games only? What's the deal here?

Sorry for all the questions, it seems like IGN is only hype rather than actual answers to my questions.

P.S. David Cage will always have my money

Don't worry, they want all PS3 games to playable on phones, Vitas, tablets, PS4 etc., all thanks to Gaikai. Also when they were showing the PS4 interface I saw a profile with 3,500 something trophes....regardless I saw trophies, so they ARE coming back and appear to carry over....(not that I doubted this would happen anyway). Your other questions were not answerd, we obviously will have to wait for E3 when they have a full massive reveal. I fricking excited with what I am seeing. DAY 1 BUY!!! In fact, I'm gonna go pre-order it as soon as I get paid the 100 dollars I am owed.

of all the 3D images I've seen, I like that old man the most. Capturing the reactions based on what it was feeling. I must say I got inspired & motivated finishing my 3D Optimus prime head project when I saw that old man B)

I won't buy PS4 on lunch since I'm sure that would another ps3 lanuch situation & at a price of $400 - $500 with the issues and all that stuff i don't want to be dealing with, I'd just save my money.

With that being said, I'd rather stick and play on my ps3 with my classics which have more to offer. Still not ready to migrate to ps4.

Yeah, that isn't cutting it, VT. More than likely we'll see what the HD Collections have done which is re-charging consumers what they already paid for which is what I don't want to see.

Wow, you're seriously pre-ordering already? There's what? 3 or 4 games hittin' the scene from what we know and everything's what they "want" to do rather than what they can possibly do? I'm pick on up next Summer as it'll hopefully be cheaper by then and we could visualize what more can be offered in the market. No offense whatsoever but by pre-ordering this system, that just shows how you could be manipulated easily without actually having seen anything what so ever.

I've games I would like to play, so my PS3 will be kept to use before the release, and definitely after :)

Meh...... Nothing really impressed me too much with the PS4.

Once GTA V comes out I'll be pretty happy with my PS3 for a few months.

I don't mean to sound like a party pooper, but why play PS3 games on the PS4 when you can easily play it on your PS3? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Saves having to have 2 consoles, I can imagine when I get the PS4 I'll still be wanting to play PS3 games and in my opinion I don't really want to be switching back and forward between the 2, would rather just play both games on the 1 console.

I remember watching this on the IGN livestream with a bunch of my buds and we were going ballistic. Basically we were happy about the overall changes and the social features PLUS the games. The ones that really caught my attention were Watchdogs, inFAMOUS: Second Son, and Destiny. As I mentioned before, I was VERY excited about inFAMOUS as inFAMOUS 2 is probably one of my most memerable experiences on the PS3. Also, we were CONSTANTLY stating that the Xbox couldnt top this (which hopefully will be true) and at one point one of the guys got retweeted by the Xbox support team. Again, I was very satisfied by this and Im looking forward to a price hopefully under $500 and more epic titles to come.

I really like the look of some of the games: inFamous Second Son's, Watch Dogs, Deep Down :holy:. The social features will probably not see much use on my PS4, but I don't mind that they're including them. Some people like that stuff, and I don't believe that any feature that I won't use shouldn't be included. I'll most likely get this on release or soon after. I'm sure I'll be playing my PS3 more for the first few months, so I don't mind the non-BC. I'd rather play PS3 games on my PS3 and not have to deal with some of the BC issues that PS2 games had on my launch PS3.

Say what you will, but I have always been a PS fanboy. I grew up playing the PS1, PS2, PSP and now PS3 and Vita. I have never gone wrong with buying a Sony console/handheld, and buying first has never dissapointed either. I got my Vita the first year and have found plenty of enjoyable games to play. Day 1 buy for me, and if for nothing other than Killzone and Infamous. :) I know I am going to play the shit out of this system (even though I'll be married within it's lifecycle lol)

Technically, the only truly backward-compatible Sony system was the the PS2. The PSP has it to a degree. For the first-gen PS3 (60 GB model), you had have an install, so you could play your PS2 games in the first place. The PS3 was expensive to make in the first place with the production costs of making the system, which is why it cost $500 or $600 (US) in the first place. Sony still lost money, even with the price that high. I understand that most consoles initially lose money at first, but the PS3 really suffered for years. It wasn't until maybe '08 or '09 that Sony got its act together. I understand that it was the lack of games was a cause of it suffering as well, but the price was the real killer. You remove some pieces, the production cost to make the system goes down, which in return will sell for a cheaper price. You noticed when Sony removed the PS2 backwards compatibility and other pieces that the cost to buy one literally halved compared to the initially launch date? I understand that people still want to play their PS3 games. Perhaps I shouldn't have said what's the big deal about it because people simply don't know. I hope I explained this well enough.

It was said that the system isn't backwards compatible, not that you couldn't play PS3 games on your PS4. I'm guessing this is what this Cloud service is for.

I knew that my expectations were to high, but overall i am very disappointed with the PS4, they focused it too much for the "casual player" with all that simple and social (two of their goal) crap. I mean i rarely use facebook or any other social network and i really dont want to spread everywhere what games im playing.

That controller looks awful and expensive, since they changed the dual shock 3 to put that touchpad crap they could have tried a new design.(i really hope the new controller will be slightly bigger than before).

The share button

Far too much emphasis on the sharing function imo. I don't play games for socialising, the only social feature I want is multiplayer and a messaging system. If I want to watch gameplay videos I'll go to youtube, I don't want everyone's 'epic headshots' being thrust at me all the time.

My thoughts exactly

And finally the single stupidest idea that can really make me not buy a PS4, the function that allow other persons to do stuff in games for you, seriously i heard rumors of people buying plats in PS3, and now Sony find a way to make it legit, yay, keep up the good work.

The games looked good, but nothing that really amazed me

Has made me decide on not buying day 1

  • No PS3 capabilities (and no I'm not going to buy all my games again just so I can stream them)
  • 'DS4' looks ok especially triggers but will probably need a loan to purchase extras
  • Vita streaming - oh yeah, coz you did what you promised with PS3 ...
  • phone streaming - get ready to have those things on charge all day :P
  • game 'share' aka as how to have your home network hacked in under 60 seconds :P
  • None of the new games are getting me going

All in all - I'll wait for decent games to drop price or GT6 to be released before purchasing a PS4 !

However Microsoft need to annouce soon or they'll lose in the hype wars, hype will now only build up for PS4 until lanch

To be honest, I am slightly disappointed / underwhelmed.

Sure, what Sony have confirmed seem to be cool features and the controller looks a lot better than the prototype we saw, but I was disappointed we didn't see the actual thing.

For me, that was one of the main things I was looking forward to. I also don't remeber seeing too much about specs and what compatibility is like for used / previous gen games.

So all in all, I like whhat we heard but would have liked a bit more detail and maybe sort of reveal of what the unit will look like.

Bit underwhelmed about the whole thing too. Didn't help my feed of the annoucement on my PS3 was nearly unwatchable and locked my machine at one point!

Seemed a lot of philosophy talk and game trailers to hide the fact there was a lack of concise details on price/release dates/hardware spec/etc...

Basically they just confirmed what we already know from leaks - PS4 is coming, end of 2013 maybe, x86, controller, 8Gb RAM, will have some driving FPS games at launch.

I assume they didn't show the look of the console and firm hardware specs as they'll be hoping these intended components will improve in next few months in size & performance so they can make the new box as slim/efficient/cheap as possible.

The lack of backwards compatibility is a shame but no surprise. It would bump up the cost of the unit and really 95% of people would never play PS3 games on it anyway. I had the original PS3 and never once put a PS2 game on - the PS3 ones were so much better looking! And I guess that's why I'm feeling so underwhelmed, when they showcased the PS3 it was such a huge jump in visuals and additional features (Blu-ray, home networking, etc) I counted down the days until release but with the PS4 it's nothing that groundbreaking. Don't really give a monkey's about social networking side of things and that seems to be it's selling point.

I will probably still buy one on release day and I would wager that'll be over 1 year away for us Euros for £299.99. It's going to interesting to see what Xbox 720 is like though seeing as PS4 is going down same road now in regards to game development.

Not sure why it's good in the long run grimydawg - basically means I will not buy ps4 until a Gran Turismo is launched (although I'll admit I'm a tight person, well I won't invest when not happy with my bang/buck) as PS3 games will be 50% cheaper than PS4 games and there is a huge catalogue :)

As I expected, an announcement of an announcement. No real detail throughout, and from what I'm seeing, I suspect my console days will bow out at the end of the PS3's cycle and I'll return to PC gaming.

As for the social media/sharing side of things, I don't want a "facebook" console and I suspect all the next gen consoles will have some aspect of this.

I watched the big show last night and in the end the whole thing was like a striptease. Except the PS4 just about got its coat and gloves off and that was it.

Now I can understand why they didnt show a console and didnt give the tech details but all the previous chat was about 4GB of GDDR5 memory and it turns out to be 8GB - that was a surprise, a quick flash of thigh if you will.

The whole "social" aspect I am not sure about. I this website is about as social as I get so it would appear that the majority of its features will be lost on me.

The mate looking over your shoulder idea is very old school, when you used to share a sofa with friends playing games and it might be fun, but all the crying about it potentially affecting the "legitimacy" of trophies is petulant beyond belief. Honestly what can you do with a trophy? You dont get discounts from stores for it, girls wont swoon over you and offer you action in an alley and the vast majority of people think you have too much time on your hands. How is this getting a mate to help any different than say joining a level 69 player in Borderlands against Crawermax and levelling from 1 to 69 in a couple of hours? (Oh this gets you about 10 legit trophies too....) So what is the problem with getting help from a mate to get through a tough part in a game.......

Backwards compatability - I own a PlayStation (actually 2 of them but never had a PSOne tho!), 4 PlayStation Two (one might have been a PS2) and a PlayStation 3 and in all that time and all those games - over 400 between all consoles - I can only once ever recall putting a game from a previous console in to a subsequent machine. It was Gran Turismo into the PS2 and it looked like shite.

So I couldnt give a monkeys about backwards compatibility and since I think I have played every game that they have released so far on the HD remakes thing first time around I cant be arsed playing them again.

I am a different person today than the one that played those games and as far as I am concerned the past is a country that I have been barred entry from.

Maybe this is all because I am pushing 40 but fu*k it - its my money, my time and by God I am going to enjoy filling every second of it with new experiences as I wont ever get to live this life again.

I have said before my first PS, PS2 and PS3 were all in around £300 - a bit more with extra controllers and games -and I don't really expect the PS4 to be any different. With that said.... I have £500 waiting in the bank for April 2014 (expected Euro launch!) cause those Watchdogs, DriveClub and KZ games looked amazing!
