This platinum is ridiculously INSANE!

I have to warn people about this games platinum trophy, I would advise if you haven't started this game and are reading this to NOT begin the platinum for this game if you care for 100% trophy completion. If you don't care you can go ahead and play it for the story and world the first time like I did when it came out. 

 

I will try to keep this shorter than it needs to be but it might be pretty long because this game pissed me off, it will take a part of your soul with it when you finally platinum it. The only saving grace is if you are reading a guide from the get-go starting the game which will save you some headache and time. You can get the gold medals this way so you don't have to go back to missions and also there is a MISSABLE trophy where you have to do 5 CAMP REQUESTS. I know someone who missed this.

 

The MP trophies, some of them are annoying. Mainly the level 50 rank which is a grind on top of a grind and also the "all's fair" trophy where you have to kill a rival posse member doing specific missions which no one plays anymore (this was launch day stuff). You will have to boost this one like I did or beg someone in the lobby to help you with it. The other one is win MVP in a game 3 times, You can try boosting it but it can be annoying from my experience but another trick for that is you wait for a game of hostile territories where you attack and defend people's zones e.g. A,B,C. And you just stay in and defend your zone, don't go out of it and you should get MVP.

 

For grinding to level 50, for the last 15 levels I just went to Van Horn Trading Post, turned auto aim off so you get double xp and just went on a rampage and kill all the NPCs there. No cops show up for a while and there is a lot of enemies there that give you a lot of xp?. In the bar sometimes 10 of them spawn, I chucked dynamite ? on them. When cops came I let them kill me because they give you shit all xp and rinse and repeat.

 

So now I write about the worst part of this, the singleplayer grind and oooh boy is it a big one ?. You have to get 70 gold medals which I did 1st after doing to MP stuff. If you are still insane enough to want to platinum this though I would advise you go for the gold medals at the same time you are doing the 100% game completion so you even them out. I did them all first before doing anything else and it started getting ridiculous. A lot of them have 10 minute horse rides where you have to tapping X all the time and listen to them talk and talk and sniff their own farts on and on. And if you fail you have to restart those levels from the beginning. There is up to 2-5 or 6 requirements you must fulfill and I mean ALL of them for the whole run of the mission. And a lot of them have speedruns with ridiculously tight times, like hardly any room for error which is kinda hilarious because it just goes against the level design and it's stupid they want you to rush through their game.

 

The next big hurdle which is the biggest one is getting 100% completion and studying and skinning every animal required. You don't need Guarm animals and really small animals that you just pick up like small birds and frogs you don't need to skin. The only side quests that are bad are the hunting quest and exotics quest. The hunting quest you have to find and kill small animals with a 3 star pelt, this has 5 parts and has really bad rng, like for me I had frustrating trouble with a 3 star Opossum and Skunk. They will waste your time. The ending of the quest was kinda funny and rewarding finally getting the squirrel ?️ statue. Then I started the exotics quest where I thought it would be short but nope it has 5 parts and you got to collect 200 items all up with rng, orchids and bird plumes to finally be done with that quest for a shitty pistol.

 

All these side quests I guarantee you will need video guides for all of them which makes it even more annoying. Another big side obstacle is you will need to complete 10 sets of challenges with 10 challenges each. Some of the ones to be wary of is gambler 8 and 9 where you have win 3 blackjack hands while having 5 cards which can take 2 hours like it luckily did for me or it can take 8 hours from what I have heard of it. For 9 it's winning 3 dominoes games in a row which I didn't know how to play so this one took me like 5 hours. Then there is herbalist 9 which requires you to pick up ALL plants disregarding all the ones you already picked up and NOT giving you a checklist for it. What were they thinking with that one sadistic bastards. I had to write a list and line them off after I did them. You will need another annoying guide for this if you want to save yourself some headache and time. Then there is the last horseman challenge which has some of the stupidest rng in the game. You must study 10 horses, again disregarding the previous ones you have done. This was the last thing I needed for 100% and I was over this game way before this point.

 

For all this you are "tapping X" like a madman trying to get your horse to run so a TURBO controller would be helpful for this game. And you are setting up camp and travelling like crazy for the 100% and animals. 

 

Studying and skinning the animals was not so bad for me because as soon as I finished the gold medals I studied and skinned every animal that I could which meant I only had like 30 left to do by the end of it. I think why it's more notorious is because people didn't do that as much going for 100% and also because the rng for animals the first few months of launch was bad. The fishing at the start gave me trouble until I learnt to do it again, you have to just very lightly rotate the rod and they will bite very fast.

 

All up it said I played this game for 270 hours and the platinum when I went for it took me about a month playing it at least 6 hours a day which is why it was crazy. So yes be warned if you are thinking of starting this.

your a bit late half the world already complained about these same things when it came out. it took me i think 2 months straight and every single thing you said was spot on. the worst was the mp trying to grind that out while everyone else was trying to kill me to take the grind spots. and then some of the animals would never appear ever. i think it took me 3 real days to find the last animal. and also the challenges were a nightmare for me as well. i think playstation said i put in around 400 hours at the end of the year on it. it was worth it and i took my time but the mp, the animal, and i think it was the stupid flowers you got to collect really made me leave the game with a hatred

I will say you did go about grinding level 50 in the most unefficient way possible.  I did the treasure hunting role and knocked it out in a few sessions.

 

From what I've been told from friends who've played the game, only the gold medals are a problem,  the hunting wasn't too bad.

wasnt there a helpful trick to the gold medals. i think if you re did them during the story youd have more ammo or something i forget. and i think they might of did a patch. all i remember is i had to redo them afterwards and it really sucked and was harder. but honestly im shit at games. if i can finish it anyone can

I think some people are not built to plat these kind of games and should probably stick to shovelware 1 min plats. This is one of the best games ever made, is it grindy? Yes is it a bad kind of grind? No absolutely not. Don't let a snowflake dissuade you from playing this gem.

Watch out people, don't play the Witcher 3 because it's long! Definitely have a 10/10 plat for these insane amounts of hours required.

For someone complaining about spending too much time on the game you sure did spend a lot of time writing about it. Your post basically translates to "some of the trophies are grindy and some of them are annoying". You could have saved yourself a lot of time by trimming your post down to that and putting it in a status update. Further, most games (the ones worth playing, anyway) have trophies that are either annoying and/or grindy, so that isn't anything new. 

 

RDR2 is a masterpiece. I have it as my personal "Game of the Generation". I spent almost as much time on getting the platinum as you did and I can honestly say I was never once bored or annoyed by any of it. Absolutely loved every second of my time with the game. The platinum takes time and effort (again, most games worth playing do), but it's a great and satisfying platinum to have and unlike you, I urge everyone to give it a go.

Yes the MP kinda blows, but the game is fantastic and I was happy to get to spend so much time with it. Just gotta be patient and enjoy the ride, partner!

I've been playing for 200 hours so far, and the only part which actually felt a bit grindy so far were the exotic requests. A few gold medals early on were a bit annoying with the long horse rides and hard objectives with bad deadeye level, but if you're only going for the trophy you can easily skip missions like those. 

 

Did you save everything for the endgame? If so I can imagine getting quite burned out by it; I've been doing my hunting and challenges in between main missions, and just letting myself be immersed in the game world. Really glad I played this now, I was kinda doubtful seeing as I really didn't like the direction Rockstar went in with GTA5. A benefit of playing it in 2023 is not only the 2019 patch which made the replays way easier, but also that the game is extremely well-documented; it's easy to find guides for all the gold medals (these should be cross-checked as well - some labeled as hard in one is not in another), as well as good spawn points for the animals.

 

...the downside of that is that for some reason people want to comment about the ending in gold medal vids for chapter 2. ? But I guess that's my thing to get the ending spoiled in RDR games; for the original one it happened through an non-spoiler-marked topic on the GameFAQs forums.

I don't see why you would discourage people to platinum one of the best games on the ps4? Sure it is tedious - but also very enjoyeable, i had 0 issues going for the platinum.

 

Also for grinding to lvl 50, Rockstar has added the collector role and makes a significant difference to when i did it on release.

 

I wouldn't even mind a PS5 version to redo everything from scratch.

Honestly this game was one of my favourites all time. Yeah it took forever to complete it, I still need like 10 gold medals for platinum but I paused the game just to enjoy it all again when I get back to it.

 

There were some frustrating times while looking for 100% completing, especially with some grindy challenges #blackjack, but gosh I'd love to rediscover this masterpiece like the first time! Time consuming platinum, but so much pride to get this done as well! Reading your post kind of convinced me to get back at it as soon as I'm done with Horizon Forbidden West haha

What gets me with these threads is the arm twisting and telling people to avoid one of the best games I played in my life not because of a game breaking bug or something but because the trophies take effort, I got the platinum within a few months and sure it was long and took some time but it was damn worth it, I enjoyed every second of the journey....just the online I could do without, it was long, boring and repetitive but the main story is so amazing that I would do it again on PS5.
