Final Fantasy XV

I know that 9.25 seems too specific a rating, but I couldn't shake the feeling that a 9 was too low for this game, and that a 9.5 was perhaps too high. Anyway.

 

Beginning with my 30th platinum trophy, Bastion, I've done a little write-up on here for every game I've completed from that point. Assuming my maths is correct, that makes this my 25th pseudo-review. It's been fun, and a really nice way to chronicle my gaming over the last year. I've got the platinum trophy for a few other Final Fantasy games in this time, and in the unlikely event that you recognise my name, you may also remember that I absolutely adore this series. My first was FFVIII, which I played as a very young child - I was too young to understand the game fully, but I was old enough to be absolutely awestruck. The scene where you land on the beaches of Dollet during your SeeD exam, paired with that amazing music, just blew me away. I was obsessed and that obsession has never left me. I know for sure that there are a lot of people here who understand exactly what I'm saying, and as a consequence of that, know how long 10 years can feel when you're waiting for a game to come out. But anyway, let's start.

 

Fuck yes, this game was great. I was so apprehensive that it just wouldn't live up to my expectations of the Final Fantasy name, but it did. Hearing that Yoko Shimomura would be taking the helm for this game left me feeling some relief - and hearing that opening theme let me know that this game would be good. It was evocative of the main theme for Xenoblade Chronicles, an astonishingly good game, during which I had a similar feeling. Funny enough, Shimomura composed that one too. What a woman. The music in FFXV was very good on the whole. Not as memorable as an Uematsu soundtrack, but nonetheless very good.

 

The story of the game was good, I think. A brilliant premise, and executed well. Unfortunately, I had one of the story twists spoiled for me (a certain event in Altissia, for those who have played the game), yet this moment still managed to affect me even though I expected it. The story became, in true FF fashion, progressively more confusing as it goes on. As far as I'm concerned, FF stories are never incomprehensible, but you do have to think about it. I've always found subsequent playthroughs to help. The main issue with FFXV's story was the pacing. The game has 14 chapters. I spent about 50 hours on the first 8 of them, and maybe another 10 on the remaining 6. This was a bit weird. I'm not saying that every chapter has to be the same length, and for story reasons I understand the discrepancies (the open world was a bit more restricted later into the game), but it came across as perhaps being a bit rushed to me. Not unfinished, but maybe rushed. I also did not enjoy chapter 13 - a 2 hour stealth segment? What the fuck? Nah. Having said this, I still enjoyed the story. There were plenty of nice twists, and I had a good time.

 

The characters. I just loved them. They were amazing. 10/10 characters for me. I've always maintained that even though FFX is my favourite, FFIX had the best cast. Their developments were just phenomenal, and I struggled to see how it could be beaten. Well, this is how. Not by 'out-developing' the characters in FFIX, but by the four friends having the most organic and genuine relationship that I have ever seen in a video game. I believed every single second, and I loved every single second of it. The voice actors were phenomenal (not just for the main four, for everyone) as well. They all balanced each other so well, and you legitimately felt part of their friendship. It was absolutely wonderful to play. Ignis was my personal favourite, but perhaps that's just the Brit in me. I would say that Noctis is also one of the best and most multifaceted protagonists I've ever had the pleasure of controlling, and by the end of the game I felt legitimately proud of him. Is that weird? Maybe. But it's testament to the game's ability to make me feel real-life emotions about these characters. Also, props to this game's villain: he's fucking great. Second best FF villain of all time in my opinion, only behind FFVI's Kefka, who is as far as I'm concerned the greatest fictional villain of all time. Yup.

 

There's so so much I haven't touched on, but the heating in my flat is shit, my hands are freezing and I want to stop typing. I'm sure you'll forgive me. This platinum was a joy to get, and definitely one of the easier FF platinums. If you've never played the series, sort that shit out and get on this game. Really really good. There really is so much I haven't mentioned. Maybe another time.

I had played this game on the PS3, but it was through PSNow, which sucked (constant crashes and slowdown). It turns out, this game was a lot better than I thought. It's still not great, but it's quite good.

#33 Zero Time Dilemma

 

 

Enjoyment: 8/10

Difficulty: 5-6/10

 

   Well, what can I say? Never thought the day would come when this amazing trilogy would end. Great characters, and an impressive story, but this last title wasn't near as good as 999 or Zero Escape, at least for me. I don't know, it didn't have the same "magic" as the others. The story in this one wasn't as surprising, though it had its moments, and the end felt very weak, in comparison with zero escape ending. I also didn't like that all the story were in form of cutscenes. This time the puzzles were much easier, so I didn't have to rely on a guide for most of them, but two of them were really hard. It was also much shorter than the others. Still, a very impressive game I'm glad that I played, but it could have been much better, just felt a bit like a letdown.

Yet another easy FF plat. The game was really fun though I feel like story telling could have been told a little better but man that ending. I hate Machina but after that scene, I forgive him. Will do a 2nd playthrough next time around when I have time

My 98th platinum, Dishonored was honestly a blast to play through. I really enjoyed the story, I liked a lot of the characters, I enjoyed the weapons and abilities you have in the game. I liked how your actions, effect the enemy layouts in later levels.  don't have any qualms with recommendng the game, except maybe to pick up the PS4 version, as it'll look prettier ^^I

This was my first ever time playing through Final Fantasy X as I originally missed it during the PS2 days due to it not being my type of game back then and boy I sure did miss an absolute gem of a game when it was first released  The pacing throughout the whole of the story of this game is amazing and it never had a dull moment throughout the 100+ hours of game time I put into this game. I had played through this masterpiece of a game using the PS4 edition of the remaster so I was more than happy to see an option to listen to the original soundtrack for this game as it is nothing short of perfection especially the infamous track 'To Zanarkand'. This game really is a roller-coaster of emotions and I am not ashamed to admit I shed a tear for this game during the ending for it as you feel so emotionally invested in each of the characters in your party and grow a genuine bond with each one of them  

 

Now it's time to find the courage to start Final Fantasy X-2 as I hear that is also a mountain of a game to try and platinum

My third Platinum of the year. This was a very odd game. I enjoyed it though. It's currently on sale on the EU store.

 

There's an excellent video walkthrough with commentary on YouTube that I used....

 

 

I messed up on the "Around The World In 80 Puns" trophy though because I missed a couple of dots on the map, so I had to chapter select for that one. Overall a 1/10 for difficulty. I definitely plan on stacking the NA list at some point.

Wow, that is was a great game. I really wish that I got a chance to play it at launch, instead of waiting a month. It was a easy platinum. The only hard part about it, was the fight  with the adamantoise, because I was so underleveled, it ended up taking me 3 hours to finally kill it, and I never been been happier to killing a hidden boss in a video game, before. Now, it's time for Steins;Gate 0 or Freedom Wars.

Yay, first plat of 2017.

Shantae: HGH is IMO one of the better 2D-Platformer/Metroidvania-games and I really enjoyed playing through it for a second time after playing the game on the Vita. The 2D-sprites look really gorgeous on a big screen and even though the 3D-models used for the environment are rather simple it still looks much better than the other infamous game with the pizza-explosions *cough* Shitty No. 9 *cough*.

The only negative aspect I could say about this game is the story which directly shows that Wayforward wanted to add at least two more levels but the KS-amount didn't get high enough. Still I don't mind as I think the game is still pretty solid and a platformer shouldn't be critized for a rushed or illogical story. The gameplay itself is real fun and the music by Jake Kaufman is great, once again (although I have to say that some samples reminded of of his Shovel Knight-tunes ). It transports the overall positive vibe of this game rather well and there are a lot of catchy tunes.

 

Trophy-wise the game was really easy with the only "difficult" trophies being the speedrun-trophies but only if you don't use the Gem Jug-trick mentioned in TheFinalEmblem's guide (a thank you for pointing that out). Otherwise the game is really easy and getting 100% should be doable for anyone as there's only one (or maybe two) collectibles where you have to link two objects that aren't directly side by side (damn you Gallery Key in Tassel Tower ).

 

But even though I enjoyed playing the game on PS4 I have to say that I enjoyed the Vita-version even more. It may not be as fluid as the PS4-version due to the lower framerate but it's still a good port for the Vita and proves that there are still western developers who care about their handheld ports. Oh, and it has the neat benefit that the in-gamer timer actually stops when you go to the home screen so your speedrun time isn't total crap. 1:51 hours on Vita vs. 2:04 hours on PS4 although I was faster on PS4 but made a short break in between.

#28 The Bunker. Not hard at all. I actually like Full Motion Video games. If you don't use a guide, it could be frustrating as there are some missable trophies. Using a guide you can complete it in under 2 hours. It was kiND of like watching an interactive movie.

#124 - The LEGO Movie - Videogame on PS4 (1st plat of 2017) - 32.60% UNCOMMON

 

The game itself was a huge amount of fun to play. I like the Lego games as a rule and nothing at all difficult in getting the platinum but guess the mid range % for completion is that folks just did not bother with cleanup on the free play levels. If you liked the Lego movie and you like the Lego games then this is a must play.

 

Overall 8/10 enjoyment with a 2/10 for difficultly
