Xbox Is Cracking Down On Easy Achievements

TL;DR: Xbox is updating the certification process and will fail games that can have their achievement list completed within a few hours of starting the game. The following are new rules:

• All achievements can be unlocked within a few minutes of starting the game
• Achievements do not represent a thorough exploration of or engagement with game content
• Achievements can be unlocked without any (or minimal) user input unless required as part of the core gameplay loop

 

I think this is something that has been needed for years on PSN, and wonder if Sony will follow suit. What are your thoughts?

Probably too little too late, but it’s something that I would be on board with.

 

While I do think that everybody should be able to game as they see fit and play whatever they wish for whatever reason, that doesn’t necessarily mean that 5 minute plats need to be a thing either.

No, they went in a different direction and tried to prevent asset flips. I.e A jumping Taco is too similar to a Jumping Pizza. This is directly targeting the requirements for Achievement lists to be approved.

Problem is it's far too late. Damage is forever done. It would take many lifetimes to play normal games and catch up to the shovelware players.

Sony needs to grow a pair and not only remove all this garbage from the store... but also remove the trophy history from PSN and all accounts.

 

A minis section should be re-launched -- or some sort of amateur community for early projects / tests / shovelware / super low budget games where people can pay for access to get all available content (or maybe even free) -- but WITHOUT trophy support for the games. Some of these titles can exist there.

The damage has been done so the only way to fully course correct, is to nuke all this trash into oblivion, then create strong enforced policies for the content approval process to ensure this can't happen again! I also approve of the idea of bringing back the Minis project so if someone does want to create something along the lines of the Jumping games and put them out there for people to play, they can but without trophy support.

 

The trophy and achievement systems need a ground up rethink, because they're a complete and utter mess right now with a ton of inconsistencies and contradictions that have long since worn out their welcome.

Maybe it’s not the smartest thing to brag about cheating, especially in a thread where a member of the CRT has already posted. Of course, someone who cheats, claims not to care about leaderboards while simultaneously piling up pay-4-plats, and can’t be bothered with little things like grammar, spelling or punctuation is probably not in the Quiz Kids club to start with.

Kind of torn on this issue. On the one hand, technically you still own the game and can still play it; removal of the trophies is not impacting the functionality of the “game.” That would say “nah, no refund; you still own the product.” On the other hand, everyone knows the reason people buy these titles is for the trophies, so it could be argued the core functionality is buying trophies; no trophies = refund. It would be interesting to see how it goes down if something did happen.

 

So far as the OP, parts 2 and 3 are fine - though I wonder how much of a game would be considered “thorough” and what impact that might have on collect-a-thons that sometimes don’t ask you to find all the Shiny MacGuffins (Dead Island 2 comes immediately to mind; it’s fairly forgiving in that regard.) The first one strikes me as potentially worrisome, however… where does that put games that, while not shovelware-style, might just be short games? It’ll be interesting to see how this goes over in Xbox Land, and what - if any - response it provokes in PlayStationville.

That's a decision Sly would have to make and there's likely some complications doing it. It also wouldn't necessarily solve the issue if other trophy sites don't follow suit.

No - anyone who bought them should be able to re-download them. They'd still have the license for their purchases. That's all they're entitled to. Any changes to the network and general ecosystem are irrelevant.

 

I mean if Sony decided tomorrow to end their trophy system completely would people still expect refunds?

This will never ever happen, as Sony gets money from this, and even promoted it with Access, but for the sake of the discussion, Sony should not be refunding anybody, removal of trophies does not mean removal of the games you bought, you can access them anytime, if, your argument is people playing those games only for the trophies, what about people playing titles only for the multiplayer, and then those servers dying? There’s a long  list of people buying gta 5 for the ps3 only for the online, should they be refunded now that the online has ended? No, the online there is, simply put, a part of the game with an expiration date, the trophy craze would  also be a part of the game (not the complete package) with an expiration date, you still get access to the gta 5 and jumping tacos game you bought.

No need for a refund, the players can still play their "game" lol
