Microsoft's plan to buy Discord

I enjoy using discord & sadly "It's oh so tiresome...?"   something is created that is awesome & useful  then gets acquired by a company that has endless pockets of cash then that service becomes less liked until something else gets created. I stopped using Teamspeak or Skype years ago.

JustinTV to Twitch  for example.

But I still use Twitch & discord but always mindful of using other programs like Odysee.

I have no loyalty to Discord. I only use it since it has become conveniently status quo but I am ready to abandon ship if that day does come. I do want to use another messaging app that is not resource-heavy and does not have too many unnecessary "bells and whistles".

Genuine question; why does this matter? There's no Discord app for PSN, and there probably was never going to be because it directly competes with Sony's built in messaging. Being owned by MS doesn't change that. And Discord on PCs and phones isn't going anywhere.

Are people here really so anti-MS that they avoid all MS-owned products? Are you going to stop using Discord because MS owns them? Why?

If ever Microsoft implements a subscriber paywall via XBOX Game Pass or Microsoft Account to be able to use Discord, that alone would make me jump ship.

I don't necessarily hate Mircosoft, as I use Windows 10 on my laptop and desktop.  I just do not want to open another account nor pay for another service that I will hardly ever use.

I can't imagine they'd put a paywall to use Discord if they bought it... but I could see a Microsoft account being required.  And having some unappealing levels of Xbox Live integration for people who don't play on Xbox.

The way the battle lines are being drawn, I really really really really hope Sony doesn't become the console of cutscene simulators and $70 "movie games."

What does this have to do with Discord? xD

Just everything from the last 2 weeks taken into account holistically.  :)

Was a thread started yet about Sony shutting down Communities soon?    Such a shame.

I am fine with Sony remaining the console that has games worth buying.

Ok that's a pretty good reason, but that would be a completely insane business decision. MS isn't full of idiots, and they already did this with people's Skype accounts. So they'll have the data to know exactly what would happen if they force all discord users to use an MS account, and it's probably not good.

Buy acquisitions, milk them for all their money, make it so others can’t provide proper competition, run them into the fucking ground.

EA after they purchased Westwood Studios and Viscereal Studios is proof of this. BioWare after EA bought them hasn’t been the same. Blizzard Entertainment has suffered many employee layoffs since their merger with Activision.

And we all know how well Skype did after Microsoft got hold of it.

These companies need to be broken down.

Microsoft is in talks to acquire Discord. Not good news for folk such as myself, who uses Discord as an alternative to PSN Messaging.

Article from Ars Technica

Microsoft destroy everything they touch. They are a garbage company and a terrible software developer. Discord itself is pretty abysmal, if you follow YouTube you will see that many YT personalities get wrecked by setting up their own Discord servers, which invariably lead to them being implicated in sexting/child porn/underage grooming/doxxing or other horrific scandals. I only have a Discord account because sometimes the crypto airdrops I use demand you have one.

To give just one example of what I am talking about, one of the YTers I followed, Dishonored Wolf, tried to commit suicide because of the toxic lunatics that joined his Discord. He is a smart guy who wrote a novel. If this can happen to him it can happen to anyone.

Let MS buy it. They will break it beyond recognition within three years and it will be abandoned by everyone. Skype used to be awesome. Linkedin was never great but it is now worthless. If MS buys Discord then another company will pick up the pieces and do a better job within two years.

The only good acquisition MS made recently was Bethesda. Now XBoxers will get to beta test Elder Scrolls Six for two years for us and then us PS users can get a polished product when the time-limited exclusive expires.?

It’s a sign of the times.

It’s just getting pathetic at this point.

All of the major corporations are hellbent on censorship. I have seen some pretty weird shit go on in Discord servers but I never delved beyond just glancing at it then moving on.

After what happened to Boogie2988 I suspect every other YouTuber who has a big following is either going to get into serious trouble, or be slowly pushed away from the YouTube platform.

It’s all about money and acquisitions, then making it so other companies can’t provide any means of competition. I have little doubt that The Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be a disaster waiting to happen. Such a 180 from how great Oblivion and Morrowind were, spent countless hours on those games on the PC.

Discord I only use for trophy boosting. That’s my only reason. Everything else can die on it for all I care.

For better or worse, it's actually the objective of many start-ups (and their investors) to be acquired by a big company before they run out of incubation money.
