Popular Post Super-Fly Spider-Guy
Firstly, YOU CAN JOIN AFTER JULY 1, 2016!!! Sure, it says financial year, sure, it's designed with that in mind, and sure, starting later kind of defeats the point of the name, but it doesn't defeat the point of the challenge. If you want to join up for this challenge on the second of August, go ahead. You wanna join up on Christmas day? Be my guest. If you do however, the date you joined (in AEST) will be placed against your name in the list below. Second, HERE'S THE ACTUAL RULES. So the deal is pretty simple, you have to try to go the next financial year without spending anything on games. Get it now? Because it's financial, and money's involved? And I'll move right along with it now. The goal is to spend no money or as little money as possible on games, and also try to clear out your backlog. There will be prizes and shit, and they will be outlined below. Now, obviously, realistically no one will make it the year without buying anything, so there's a few concessions that will be made, namely... I. YOU ARE ALLOWED 3 GAMES TO PURCHASE, regardless of price, and they will not affect your standing in this challenge. Generally, these are things that aren't out yet, but that you know you want, however, let's say you don't have a lot of money and you were saving up for a copy of Just Cause 3 or something, that's cool too, when you have the money, you can buy that game and it's thrown on your list, you're fine to have it. These games DO NOT need to be picked before entering the challenge, essentially it's 3 chances to buy something without feeling any judgment. Something awesome on sale for the first time, or a new release in a franchise you love (I'm looking at you Duke Nukem 3D's 20th (anniversary) re-release), you can cough it up 3 times before we figure out a punishment. II. FREE GAMES & PS+/GWG GAMES (which aren't free since you have to pay, but whatever) ARE ALLOWED, so if you just loaded up Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, which is one of July's PS+ games for PS4 (which I recommend you do, I had a blast with that game), then that's perfectly fine with this thing. III. THIS IS ACROSS MULTIPLE CONSOLES, meaning you can't just skip out on buying PlayStation games, and instead play on your Xbone for a year. This also applies to the third main point coming up, more information there. IV. THERE IS AN ALLOWANCE FOR DLC (and other random shit), and that allowance is agreed to be $20. This 20 bucks can also be extended to other things like if you find a rare or hard to find game at a yard sale or something, but remember, the idea is to stop spending, not find a bargain. If I see a copy of Spider-Man 1 on PS1 for a decent price, I don't care how many challenges I'm in, I'm buying it. This allowance is to cover your ass for such things / DLC content you really want. V. PHONE GAMES COUNT. Phone games are getting better and better, the last Grand Theft Auto for Android was Liberty City Stories, it was $7.50 at launch, it was awesome, and it was a full on game. For that reason, we are not allowing PURCHASES of phone games as most of the more legit games on phones aren't free, however, you can play as much Candy Cock Saga or any other free game as you want. IN APP PURCHASES WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM THE DLC ALLOWANCE THOUGH. VI. GIFTED GAMES ARE COOL. If someone buys you that cool new Bareback Simulator for Christmas, that's completely fine. If you really wanted, you could abuse this and, say, have your girlfriend buy you Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and say it was a gift, but although that's not directly wrong, I mean, it really is cheating and if you do that then what are you doing here? Update: I didn't ask for it, but this was kind of abused by me when my girlfriend got me Just Cause 3 and Disney Infinity 3 for my b'day. VII. RENTALS AND / BORROWING GAMES. The idea is to spend as little money as possible during the challenge / event / thing. Paying 9.95 to borrow a game for a week is spending, isn't it? And rental prices is bullshit as it is so it's not something you should really do anyway unless you have a good place or something. Anyway, free rentals / borrowing games is perfectly fine. It's not ideal, and it was banned at first, but I'm gonna say fuck it, because at the end of the day, you may not be cutting your backlog, but you're saving money, which is almost, or maybe even more important. VIII. PLAYSTATION NOW / EA ACCESS / ANY SIMILAR SERVICE IS NOT ALLOWED. The reason being, that you are paying for that service, when all you get is games, meaning, you're paying for those games. PS+ and GWG are cool because you need those things to play MP, which I still object to, but completely understand if you shell out the money for that, and the included games are just gonna become part of your backlog anyway, but PSNow and EA Access are effectively just rentals, and according to VII, there's not to be any money spent on a rent. Al. IX. YOU WILL NOT BE KICKED OUT FOR BUYING ANY GAMES. Ever. The goal is to not buy games, but you're forgiven if you do, we're all human. However, you will have to list your failures in your post, but there's more on that below. You will also probably not be kicked out at all, unless you're going around spreading kiddie porn or something, you'll be fine with everyone in here. X. HARDWARE PURCHASES ARE COOL. Cool, sure. Ideal, not really. I mean, let's say you've been saving for a PS4 and you finally buy get all the money next week, feel free to buy it, feel free to use up all your 3 games on the thing too, it's all good. It's not really advisable however, that you spend your money on a new machine when you've already got one or more (how else did you get here?) with a stack of games to play anyways. Throwing up the cost in your overall expenses is probably worth doing though, just because it's cool to keep track of stuff like that and compare and shit. Third, here's a tutorial, this is HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHALLENGE. For the challenge, you have try not to spend money on games. Pure and simple. Just kidding, there's more to it than that, like this stuff. I. You should make a list of your games that you've played and completed. Use as much or as little detail as you want with it, you could say you spent 5 minutes playing Crash 1 the other day, or you could ignore it. You could say you beat every level in Crash 1 and leave it at that, or you could record your percentage and the gems and whatnot that you got (or the trophy count, if the trilogy on PS4 comes out before this ends). Being a trophy tracking site, trophy tracking is the most common progress tracker so far on this. My list for example, is only updated when I beat a game, I play way too many not to completion to bother writing up that much stuff, so mine is like I beat this game's story and this one and got the plat in this etc. yours can be whatever you want it to be. II. You should also list the games you intend to pick-up (if you've already picked them), or the games you bought along the way, like the other day at Cash Converters when they had another bargain bin thing and you thought I didn't see you go in there but I did, I saw it. III. Next up is to list all the DLC and / or other shit you caved in and bought despite the challenge, also with the console of choice it came on, like how you saw Vice City was on sale on PS4 and couldn't resist that glory that the game is. Oh, and the prices you got them for / total money spent, in AUD pls, so I don't have to do currency converting because I'm lazy and it keeps us all on a fair level field, except that money value is always in flux and one week might be a particularly good one for the dollar and the next may be shit. IV. Finally, you can list your total expenditure if you want. You don't have to, the first three you do though, anyway, the total / overall expenditure is a cool thing to look back on a year later, I'd say do it, but then, you should ideally have nothing in there. Got all that? Here's how your thing should look then Your PSN user name Games played Goat Simulator PS3 - platinumed Spider-Man 2 PS2 - beat the story Pepsiman PS1 - beat the story Halo 2 Xbone - beat the story Call of Duty 2 360 - 1000 GS'd Pick-ups Spider-Man PS4 Crash Bandicoot PS4 Gravity Rush 2 PS4 Cave-ins Robot Arms: Glitch in the System PS2 - $3.50 DLC Goat Simulator PS4 - Goat MMO - $7.50 Fourth, PRIZES AND REWARDS and shit. I bought the Capcom Humble Bundle at some point in August for a friend as a gift and when I started typing the codes into a USA account for them I got like 2 or 3 in and realized the games they have no interest in would make better prizes here, since they would have never played them anyway. For this reason, there's a couple that unfortunately aren't in here, they mostly would play Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, but there was some other budget looking PS3 game I typed in and Strider and Megaman that are now unable to be given away because of my lack of foresight. Anyway, they were stoked on Resi and DMC, and I told them to try Strider because it's a dope ass game. Anyway, the list of games is in the spoiler below. NetEntity
Hm. This, actually, is a great idea. For me, personally, it's more of the problem to keep the amount of unplayed games from growing, rather than money spent, because I keep getting new games for my newest consoles while the old ones stand in the corner untouched for months. And since my combined backlog for PS3\Vita has reached a whooping 150 titles, my poor PS1, PS2, PSP, Cube and Wii will stay untouched even longer... and each one of them has their own gigantic backlogs. And since the JRPGs are the prevalent genre across all backlogs... yep, I'm doomed. And I feel really, really guilty about it. So very guilty. Good luck on your challenge. Saionji
Good luck to anyone attempting this if I see a good price on games I m interested in there is no way to stop me from buying it, nice idea but not for everyone
Mcbeanstr
I had a good ol' chuckle at that (possible) typo in the first paragraph and Candy cock saga Now OT: This sounds like a very good plan and I can definitely relate to your plight . I purchased some games years back and haven't gotten to them yet. Ni No Kuni and Splinter Cell Blacklist comes to mind immediately. I shall make up a list and see where it gets me
GoldenShaka
Doctor spidey, that's a good therapy for all those lost souls which cannot stop buying games in general, but more important that cannot resist a great deal. Because even when those are your exceptions for purchase a game, let's be real, -unless you're a purist that only play one genre- it's very hard to not find a good deal every month. And little by little your backlog will continue growing. Still thinking about what to buy from the E3 sale :/ All our prayers go with you.
DetectiveCJ
Thankfully I have a child, so I mean, that takes up a lot of my time anyways. Anywhore, here's the challenge I surely hope your kid doesn't read this post as you have "whore" in your words and we adults know what a whore is. Regardless, I don't think I can do this challenge as I plan to buy a new 2DS soon and get Pokemon Moon and Kingdom Hearts 2.8, but I wish you good luck. xFalionx
Wow, I'm scrolling through the forums and what do I find? An average year in my life challenge! Since I have a yearly income of 0 units of any currency in the multiverse (give or take 50 cents) this challenge is gonna be surprisingly easy for me. I mean I am gonna get some gifted games for sure but the only game I would get myself this year is Pokemon Moon. Most of my time is probably gonna be spent on anime and Osu! instead of my backlog, though. But I do have a few games that I either still need to finish or want to platinum in the near future. And I don't even have to care about the android clause since I don't own any android devices. But yeah, it's gonna be one heck of a normal year for me. Games played: PC: Block N Load [F2P|Steam] (27/64 - 42%) 101 hours ; now: 101 hours | 01/07/16 PS3: [planned] Rune Factory Oceans (17%) PSVita: Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (72%) 134 hours ; now: 134 hours | 01/07/16 [planned] Persona 4 Golden (18%) Pick-Ups: Pokemon Moon My little sins: Nothing yet (Legend: Game name (Achievement/Trophy progress X/Y Z%) playtime at the start of the event A hours ; playtime now B hours | first time played in the event DD/MM/JJ Edit: -Updated game lists (I'm gonna do this pretty frequently (whenever I start a game or once every 1-3 days) so check back here from time to time Spider-Guy) I'm not listing all of my games since I want this list to be diary style. I've pretty much started all of my owned games except for Jak 2 and 3, and Terraria. Might have overlooked one or two of my unstarted games, though... And I can happily state that the only DLC I own are the free DLC from SAO: HF. Changelog: 01/07/16 Changed layout of "Games played" added SAO: HF, P4G, RFO and Block N Load Edited July 1, 2016 by xFalionx
Super-Fly Spider-Guy
Ayy, some other people are down. xFalionx
Actually regarding the played games section:I think I'm probably gonna do it like this: [Game name] [progress% / story done / platinum trophy] And I'm probably gonna make separate sections for PC and consoles, because otherwise it'd be pretty easy to get lost in a years worth of games. I might even include a little personal rating of the games to make it more interesting. But I'm not the biggest fan of the time idea so I'll most likely be leaving that out of my posts. Well, maybe I'll make an exception for steam games since they basically time themselves. Edit: Now that I think about it: would you call getting the new WoW expansion buying a game? I think that's some grey territory. I'm gonna leave it off my list for now since I'm still not 100% sure if I should get it. ghostehkins
I think I'd like to try this. It will help me get through all these PS+ games, and save some money in the long run. Evil_Joker88
Quickdrawjoe mentioned something important i think... i just bought DLCs for Crysis 3, Kingdoms of Amalur and Dante's Inferno... but should i consider these as bought any game? I guess so, because albeit they're cheap i spent some money on these games... and this challenge shall prevent me from buying too much/ unnecessary things, right? Ratchet2425
I'm going to start adding in games to my Games Played section over the next week or so, and since this challenge is about clearing out backlogs I plan on adding everything in my collection (including purchased games that I haven't downloaded/started yet) that I haven't completed which I plan to complete at some point. As to the question of does DLC count, I would think that smaller DLCs like skins or maps wouldn't count as they're not "new games", but expansions and biggers DLCs that have trophies associated with them might have to go on a case-by-case basis, although I'm good with whatever interpretation you guys feel is appropriate. Jacob_Neal01
I can't do this... 1, I don't have enough games to last me until next year 2, I impulsively buy things on sale 3, I always forget about these challenges and leave them hanging halfway through

At the end of the day, it's your list, so it's up to you, if you were to include DLCs and the sort, I'd at least put in brackets that it is DLC, but to me, and I stress me personally and not this challenge thing, I'd consider independent releases, like the GTA IV episodes, the inFamous Festival of Blood and First Light DLCs, & Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, that function without the main game, to be their own game, but again, just do whatever you think is right. In terms of DLC purchased though, that's a tough one, I'm going to put forth that we count DLC purchases as half a game, mostly so as to cover Quikdrawjoe who has 4 purchases listed. Edit: I forgot to add that I'd like you guys' opinion on this, we'll figure it out however you find to be fair. Backlog: Assassin's Creed Revelations God of War II Time Crisis 4 Arcade Version Dark Void Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Bioshock Infinite Rocket League Razing Storm Deadstorm Pirates Destiny: Rise of Iron (already purchased available 9/20/16) Planned Expenditures: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (DLC) Rocket League (DLC) Watch Dogs 2 Destiny 2/any Destiny expansion/DLC Guilty Pleasures: None Love the enthusiasm with the backlog list, and if you're 100% you'll play all of them I'll leave it as is, but the idea was to write down what you played as you go, kind of like a diary, but fun. If I told you the length in kilometres of the list of my backlog, that's one thing, but saying I'll get through them all in a year? I just won't, and I'll wind up probably playing a third of them if I'm lucky. The point is, if you're sure you'll play all of these, like 169% sure, I'll keep it, but it's meant to be added to, because realistically we're not gonna finish up our entire backlog, that's all Edited June 20, 2016 by Super-Fly Spider-Guy

Great... that means that i may buy one smaller DLC in the upcoming year And the names i listed are mostly games i plan to complete within until End of August as part of the Summer Backlog Challenge, so i'm dead confident i will play these ... but more gonna be added in the next months... cuz i have hundreds of games lying around ... i bet you know what i mean

I mostly included Watch Dogs 2 because I might buy it but it's unlikely. DLC is for the 100% completion goal and as I said I plan on playing only Destiny I'll continue buying expansions/DLC as they are released. With only 9 games on my entire backlog that gives me around 40 days to play each game and I've already got a head start on Bioshock Infinite (started the Clash in the Clouds DLC).
