Popular Post Slava
Caddyshack I haven't watched a live action comedy film in a while. Was in a bad mood lately, needed to raise my spirits with something dumb, so I dug up this old comedy from the bottom of my watchlist. Caddyshack fit the bill, even though it's not a perfect film. Multiple plotlines center around (mostly) crazy people at a golf club. The club owner and another rich man are having a feud, a greenskeeper (young Bill Murray) is at war with a gopher, a young caddy is worrying about his future career, and Chevy Chase is mostly just dicking around. There's so much going on at all times, that at some point you forget who the main character is and what the movie is about. The middle of the film feels like a collection of random comedy sketches. But you kind of don't care about that when some of these people are on screen. The moment Murray, Chase, or Dangerfield start talking, your attention falls under their control. Here's all you need to know: Caddyshack is the kind of movie that uses an animal puppet Caddyshack is the kind of movie where some names of places and characters are dirty puns Caddyshack is the kind of movie that shows boobs more than once Caddyshack is the kind of movie where a character acting like a lunatic for two minutes is the joke, and it's actually not even bad. Not exactly my kind of humour, I guess, but I had fun watching Caddyshack. I should probably watch more 80's American comedies, so I can at least compare it to something. Oh, and Kenny Loggins was killing it on the music. Such good songs.

If Chevy in Caddyshack made you laugh, I recommend starting with Fletch! Once of the best 80s comedies, and a personal favourite! Also, if you are at all interested in “how the hell did a movie like Caddyshack come about?” I’d recommend the very funny, and pretty good recent Doug Kenney Biopic Netflix made, called A Futile and Stupid Gesture. It’s a very watchable, interesting and funny look at a somewhat forgotten comedy genius- who created the National Lampoon, Animal House… and Caddyshack!

The Netflix biopic sounds interesting, but I'll pass for now. I sense that it'll be a kind of film to sit in my watchlist for 5-10 years. I've watched very few 80's comedies made in NA. Never seen anything by National Lampoon, Never seen Chevy Chase films before (Caddyshack was my first). I haven't watched many 80's movies in general for that matter, including action classics like Predator and Die Hard. Not to mention horror. It's like a white gap I've been slowly filling lately starting with Scorsese's works. Anyway, what I mean is I probably need to educate myself first, then I could generate enough interest for a lookback like A Futile and Stupid Gesture. That’s fair - I think A Futile and Stupid Gesture can work without that background knowledge… but you definitely get a lot more out of it having seen more of the films and stars it is referencing. My wife didn’t know a lot of that stuff, and did enjoy it… but on the other hand, she did have me sitting next to her to answer her questions as she had them… and there were a fair few as I recall!
Don_Chipotle
Godzilla Minus One - Wikipedia This is without a doubt one of the best movies of 2023, the chemistry between characters, the plot, the action, the love for the details, the feels, i think its a simple yet complex film that totally deserves the praise and can be considered one of the best godzilla for the simple reason it makes you care for little details, even when godzilla steps towns filled with people it feels totally different because its made great. Saw X - Wikipedia And lets talk about my first letdown of 2023/2024, this film was going great but the third act its total crap, it looks like it was made by totally different persons who didnt know how to finish the story or how to advance the plot, its one of the most laziest and biggest letdowns, when you think its going to take a turn, its just a "captain obvious" moment, and many things that are let in the air, it looks like they pretend to do XI, but i hope not because this was just bad for that closure, yeah, there are great moments and the camera work its great, way better than the other films, if you are curious about the new traps just check them by skip forward the film, because its not worth yout time, and its a total shame. Popular Post Slava
Bound The Wachowskis are so good at directing thrillers, how come they haven't made another one like this? This is impressive, especially for a directorial debut. There's a lot to love about the writing, camerawork, and editing in Bound. The acting is decent too except for some underdelivered lines. There are hints of the Wachowskis' aesthetic that later develops in The Matrix as well, like a lot of metal, black clothes, a close-up of a gun barrel. Also, if there was an eroticism meter device, the beginning of Bound would make that thing combust. Imagine watching this in a movie theatre with other people. I can't.

Such the perfect mix of diverse characters and personalities. Great cast chemistry and dialogue. So funny and so full of heart. Popular Post Redgrave
The GOAT video game movie adaptation that I still think hasn't been topped. It's pretty much lightning in a bottle with how well everything lined up for it in terms of cast, the setting, and the soundtrack. I mentioned it in another thread but it was a few wrong decisions from being not as great since the Scorpion fight almost ended with Johnny shadow kicking Scorpion and the Reptile fight almost not happening at all but thankfully there were test audiences that they listened to. Probably the only really negative thing I can say about it is that Sonya's arc kind of feels like it ends halfway through when she beats Kano, and in turn Kano didn't do very much. Despite that I still love it and Reptile's theme is a banger. I also love how when he's introduced you hear the announcer go "Reptile!" and a part of me kind of wishes that happened with all the opponents but I think it works so well with Reptile because of the buildup and the music kicking off. As for Annihilation it had been a while since I saw it and I wanted to see if it's really that bad and while it does start off decent enough apart from Johnny Cage getting killed off, I was surprised that they actually stuck close to the story from the games by mentioning Shao Kahn breaking the rules and trying to merge the realms even to the point of mentioning Sindel's role in it. It felt like it was actually trying to be faithful to the games up to a point, but once Scorpion and Sub-Zero disappear from the movie, it feels like the movie starts doing this thing where it is quickly rushing to end. This is very apparent when there are scenes where there is mention of things happening off-screen and characters that are unceremoniously killed off as quickly as they are introduced. The first example being Rain who mentions how he beats Kabal and Stryker off-screen and then is killed in the same scene by saying he spared them. Like alright, I guess we'll just glance over Kabal and Stryker being somewhere in the world. Another being how Baraka and Sheeva are killed off right after another, but at least Baraka got to have a fight whereas Sheeva just dies in a comedic fashion. Ultimately I feel like this would have worked better as a mini-series since I think if it wasn't rushed so much and characters getting killed off so fast it could have been decent. Although I think Shao Kahn was miscast. I think he should have been played by someone that's 6'5 and built like a truck, looks like he could stop one, and never removes the helmet. He also doesn't use his sick warhammer apart from one scene but it doesn't look like it should. Other than that, the fights are mostly fine even as weird as the Raiden and Reptiles fight is, the soundtrack is at least good. I figured I may as well watch this one too despite hearing it wasn't too remarkable. I think the beginning part where it shows Scorpion and his family was cool and I probably would have just preferred it if the movie was just a ninja revenge story about Scorpion. The poster even makes it kind of come off like it would. Instead I guess the main character is Cole Young who is unfortunately not named Kole Young like you would expect him to considering the Mortal Kombat naming schemes. To be honest I didn't understand what his power was other than it being literal plot armor. Aside from that there is the other characters. I think Kano was probably the best one and I didn't mind Sonya too much although I feel like they swore way too much and I hate to sound like "Ooh I don't like swearing" but I do think there is a such thing as too much. Hearing them say the fuck word every couple of seconds got kind of tiresome to where I started tuning out of the dialogue and it just made me think of that meme about how if Vivziepop made other series. Otherwise Liu Kang was fine and I like that Kung Lao got to do something for five minutes before Brooklyn Kabal had to remind the audience we were watching a Mortal Kombat movie and that he was going to get Soul Sucked™ by Shang Tsung. Overall I feel it could have been better. Edited January 8 by Redgrave
wolvieware
Watched a couple over the weekend: Fast X: Surprisingly better than I expected. By all measurements it’s a pretty bad film (plot, acting, cgi) but it delivers the entertainment value with some decent action. It also doesn’t let up at all, constantly on the go. Jason Mamoa unexpectedly original and looks like he’s having a blast. Ghosted: Apple TV movie with Chris Evan’s. Generic civilian caught up in spy caper with gender roles kinda reversed, Chris Evan’s is the civilian who doesn’t know what’s going on. It was light hearted and easy watch but nothing special.

Popular Post Slava
The Matrix The 90's were the peak of counterculture, and the decade was topped off with The Matrix. The frustration with the establishment gave birth to a lot of cool stuff, but the Wachowskis took the "fuck the system" idea even further. The main characters are hackers, the bad guys are cops and agents, only in this case the people are slaves of the system in the most literal sense: we're stuck in a simulation while robots are using us as batteries. Of course, when Morpheus says that people are fooled by the system and we have to "free the mind" and the camera switches to a policeman, the Matrix is probably not the only thing you'll be thinking of at that moment. That's one of the reasons why I like this movie's script. There's usually something to unpack. There's also enough philosophy in this film to fill a 15 hour long video essay on YouTube. What is reality? Is it just what our brain tells us it is? What is the nature of prophecy? Can you reveal the future without influencing the outcome? Was the human race doomed the moment we gained consciousness? Would we be satisfied with a perfect world with no suffering? Is the human nature compatible with such reality? The Matrix tickles your brain so many times. But it is also a feast for the eyes. One of the most important qualities of a filmmaker is the ability to generate ideas. The Matrix is filled with interesting visuals. Not just in terms of designs of the robots, ships, the characters, but also the visual language stuff like all the reflections, camera going in and out of a computer monitor, the ripple effects, and of course the iconic bullet time - a crazy trick that is achieved practically with a whole bunch of cameras placed in a circle. It's used perfectly for bullet dodging scenes. The shootouts are no exception. The use of slo-mo is tasteful. It's cool to see the wall turn into dust from gunfire in incredible detail. The hand-to-hand combat would look goofy and over the top if flying around and kicking your opponent 10 meters away didn't make so much sense in a simulation. The obvious rope strap use just adds style points, honestly. Everything somes together so well, including the cast. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving are so cool. You can't imagine this movie with anyone else. I liked them all, but Weaving's performance probably takes the cake for me. That one monologue close to the end was so strong and memorable. Keanu is also doing well here compared to something like Johnny Mnemonic. The only thing I didn't believe was the romance between Neo and Trinity, but I guess it's more of a writing problem than an acting one. Great movie, very rewatchable. P.S. It's funny to notice now that most of the symbols on their future screens are just katakana. P.P.S. Next time I'll try to watch a verison without the green tint. For me, this one is a masterpiece. But anyways, what were your thoughts and why only 3 stars? Yeah I didn't leave a review out because I didn't felt I had much to say about the movie after it ended, but sure I can share some thoughts on what I thought about it. I liked that the film didn't hold back from the dread and misery of the situation through the first half, which made the small moments of optimism and much hopeful tone towards the end stand out more in contrast, I also though the scenery of the mountains throughout the film was quite pretty as well. The reason I didn't fully vibe with the movie was because at a certain point after the crash I felt the movie has lost it's steam and a bit of my interest, after all the movie is mostly just the victims and survivors hanging on to the crashed landing point. It would've helped a lot if much more was happening to feel more attached to the story and it's characters, though with the little they gave the main group of victims the movie did focused on, it did slightly helped and I did like the idea of all the names of the fallen victims appearing on text as the movie went on to make up for their absence. I totally get if the movie may be more accurate to the true story like this, but had it handled the story in a much interesting less repetitive way I would've appreciate it much greatly for it. As far as movies based on true stories go I'd rather have them feel simultaneously authentic and riveting, if not I can always just watch a documentary that goes in-depth about what really happened or read about it. In the case of Society of the Snow for me ultimately it still felt somewhat authentic and satisfying, and I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a good survival movie based on true events, even more so if they're already familiar and much closer to the story itself in which case they'll get more out of their experience like how yours did. And as far as that reveal with the narrator went, I felt indifferent about it aside just being an interesting choice in the movie. I guess it was made to really express how this story is about all the victims who went through that time. Edited January 9 by Crzy Minus
Don_Chipotle
Retribution (2023 film) - Wikipedia What a weird film, but yeah, watched it and its not a awful film, but it somehow feels a little weak in story progress, and characters sometimes feel like out place, like it was meant for another person sometimes, and its not the most action packed movie of Liam Neeson Edited January 9 by Don_Chipotle

RadiantFlamberge
Terminator: Genisys It starts in 1984, at the time of the original Terminator's events. The timeline gets heavily altered, thanks in part to Skynet now resorting to attacking a 9-year old Sarah Connor back in 1973. One of my favorite things here is seeing Sarah take a few levels in badass. Not living in fear, but rather declaring war on Skynet and those Terminators who serve it... and waiting for Kyle Reese to show up so they can kick its ass together. Sarah and Kyle also have a T-800 on their side. Genisys kept a decent pace and was a pretty good 2 hours. This one has several antagonist Terminators in it. Not sure it's the best Terminator movie, but I liked it. Spoiler When Kyle Reese makes it to 1984 to save Sarah Connor from the original Terminator, she's already helped her T-800 ally Pops wreck it. In fact, she even gets Kyle out of a jam. The classic "Come with me if you want to live" is her line now. There is a particularly tragic twist that happens in Genisys. I'll not reveal it here, even in a spoiler.
