Does unplattable = unplayable?!?

Unplattable Games - Collect Dust or Play Anyway?

It depends why it's unplattable, the following will be reasons why I'd still play if it was unplattable;

  • Closed servers, but the game can still be played
  • Glitched trophies (as in the trophy just not popping)
  • Difficulty beyond my ability (if I still enjoy the game on lower difficulties)
  • Bugs and glitches that can prevent trophies, but not make the game uncompletable (Items/NPCs not appearing, doors not opening, dialogue not occurring, etc.)
  • Requiring an online pass and only the account that redeemed it can access the online (damn you, Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. :shakefist:)

As for when I will not play it and it's unplattable

  • Closed servers that result in rendering the game unplayable (see basically every F2P)
  • Game-breaking bugs and glitches
  • Infuriating difficulty to the point of it no longer being fun

Probably best to avoid every Free to Play game unless you can jump on those early and know you are capable of getting the platinum. Otherwise don't bother (Socom is a good example).

There is an immense satisfaction when you beat an extremely difficult game. But I understand that those are not for everybody, most people have a breaking point when it comes to difficulty vs. fun.

It will collect dust for me but this rarely happens as I'm careful about my purchases.

I tried before not caring about trophies and buying a game anyways but it ended in a disaster.

Soo... I learned that I like trophy hunting and should avoid unplattable games.

Games that are unplattable should still be played. A perfect example of this is Ghostbusters The Video Game. I got that game 2 years ago and I already knew prior to its arrival that the online servers were shutdown. But that didn't prevent me from enjoying the game and earning all the offline trophies. Made one of them my 3000th trophy milestone by the way. As others have previously stated you shouldn't let online servers determine whether or not you should play the game. Unless the only way to play is through online servers. So again the choice is up to you but that's just my two cents. :)

I deciding If I should get all the trophies I can get on my unobtainable plats or if I should hide those games

There's no need to hide those games. Unless it was something like Hannah Montana which I can understand why some people would want to hide that game.

As others mentioned, DON'T LET UNOBTAINABLE TROPHIES STOP YOU FROM PLAYING.

The only game that nearly made me cry because it got unobtainable was FIFA 14. I am a super Football fan and I was almost proud to make it my first platinum. Until today, I only have 1 trophy left for the platinum. Although the FIFA games will keep getting unobtainable in the future, I will keep buying them. I currently have FIFA 16 in my backlog, but I will soon get back to it and plat it. It's good to hear that there are no more "Challenge" related trophies in the game, which by keeping my hopes up, it will never become unobtainable. However, if it becomes unplattable someday, I'll still play it.

As long as I enjoy the game, the unobtainable trophies won't stop me from playing it.

I think that's how the system works for me :).

I played a a few games that I would never consider attempting for the platinum due to it either being to difficult or time consuming. I just played them for the story, gameplay and characters, e.g. Tales of Zestiria and Symphonia, Disgaea 4 and D2, Kingdom Hearts games, FFX. I would also play games I'm interested in even if they do not have a plat. At least you get trophies. I would never buy a game that I won't play eventually at least, that's just a waste of money and space.

Absolutely not. (Not that I'm one to talk, since I lack the skill and patience to plat anything beyond a Danganronpa game.) If it matters that much, play them on side accounts. No game should be passed up simply based on a trophy. You could be skipping something you end up really enjoying.

I don't give a damn . Ifi want to play i'll play , no unobtainable trophies  gonna stop for at least enjoying the SP campaign and modes since online is shut down . I have Darksiders I & II for PS3 anx even tho II is a impossible plat now on PS3 i intend to play it nontheless . I don't strive for 100% trophy list , some games i started long ago like PES and FIFA games are already impossible plats due to severs shutted . And even without any unobtainable plat on my list , i wouldn't even try to 100% all games cause i'm too far behind with less than 60% overall completion and i wouldn't bother myself to go back to many of my past games and plat them and having the trouble to get and re-bought many of them all over again .

I'm fine like this so i'll just keep on gaming and getting trophies as much as i want and feel like .

I start most games fully aware that I probably won't get the platinum due to my limited skill and lack of interest in completely mastering a game to the point I'd be good enough to pull off more difficult platinums. So already without servers being closed, or bugs, most platinums are already out the window for me and that's absolutely fine. I don't need a platinum at the end of it to enjoy myself.

I mentioned in another thread that some trophies encourage exploration, making different choices and sometimes screwing around. I've taken that on board and that's a natural part of the way I play now. So platinum or no platinum, I get the absolute most out of my games and enjoy it. That's what matters most to me and if it makes my stats worse than they already are, so be it!

I don't see the point in having a 100 percent profile. Sure there are people out there who are dedicated enough to get it, and are generally successful in reaching that plateau, but the vast majority, including myself, will probably never reach that pedestal.

Trophy hunters are already a small minority among all Playstation gamers, less than 10 percent of everyone if my guess is correct. Take all the trophy hunters including myself and count how many people that have or are close to a 100 percent profile. Very few of us. If you have a 100 percent profile, and you have a good collection of games under your belt (5000 - 10000+ trophies), then congratulations. You are one of the few and proud, and you should take that with great honor because people like me don't have the will, patience or time to bother getting to 100 percent.

I do plan to get all trophies in Super Meat Boy. It's going to take a hell of a lot of dedication, a few balls of steel, and real courage to even attempt to get that platinum. But when I do it will be the greatest accomplishment in my 25+ years of gaming. It will trump the 7500+ hours I poured into Runescape, going after goals and reaching certain levels so I can go back and say I was truly proud of myself for all the work I had done.

My trophy plans will probably change as I get older. I simply don't have the time I used to have 10 years ago or so when I was attending High School. But just be aware that you know your own strengths and weaknesses. There will always be someone better than you, but don't let that deter you from your goals. You just need to try your best.

I'll share it with you in spirit

I mean, I suppose my profile isn't that bad so far but you'll never see the likes of say, Super Meat Boy or something of similar difficulty getting platted on there. I'll play difficult games if it's something I'll enjoy and try for the platinum like I did with Metal Gear Rising, but as you can see from that game I came a little short. I played through and finished the game on hard difficulty but it's the specific requirements that stop me like take no damage from the bosses on Rising or finish this in under two hours like ICO.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'll keep working on it!

The part I've highlighted is another reason I forgot to mention as to why I might not platinum a game. Working full time, attending uni and socialising means I'm fairly limited in how much I can play, usually I can manage one day a week, sometimes two days and maybe an hour some evenings if I'm not too busy. While I'm happy to spend a few weeks or even months on a game assuming I'm enjoying it, what I won't do is use that time to master a difficult game like SMB so I can platinum it as I said above. Reaching that level of expertise isn't really that much fun to me, and with the limited time I have it's important that I'm enjoying what I'm doing.

P.S. Good luck with your SMB platinum!

Even as a trophy whore there is only one thing that matters and that is the number of trophies. 100% is an artificial invention and because it includes DLC I have no intention of buying already renders that target obsolete for me. I am going through by back-catalogue and have a number of games with closed servers such as Pro Evolution games that I am going to earn anyway because I want to show off that I played them. Sticking to 100% only limits your ability to play games you would enjoy otherwise.

It's a big risk. I feel that unless you're extremely careful with the games you choose, you may very well screw yourself because you may put a game on your profile that has glitched trophies, or you didn't quite play enough of the online before the servers close down, making the platinum impossible.

I'm happy enough with say a 90 percent completion rate. It shows you play most of your games thoroughly, regardless if you missed out on a trophy or if you're not willing to dedicate the sheer amount of time it takes for a certain objective.

I love The Witcher 3. I think it is the best RPG this generation. But the time it takes plus it's DLC is going to be a major task especially when I have so many other games that I want to play first, either because they are a lot shorter or because they have been sitting on my shelf for two whole years. I will get back to that game, but with a real life schedule I have currently going it may be a bit of a challenge.

Is it a good game anyway? I'll play it. I have my Road to 100 Plats planned out and beyond that I have more than enough "plattable" games to get me to 200 as well and beyond. But I will play games that are unplattable or have no trophies at all (I still have to play Heavenly Sword and plan to do so very soon!) and I will get on the Ghostbusters game (the one based on the original movies, not the steaming pile of shitty poo crap that came out last year.

If a game is fun, I play it. The trophies are a nice addition and something to remember the game by, but they aren't my reason to play a game. I don't look at trophy lists beforehand anyway because it spoils things, and I can't imagine it would be fun to make the first playthrough sticking to a guide instead of discovering the game the way you want.
