Popular Post Aranea Highwind
More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5. Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset. We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience. One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences. There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality. We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future! https://blog.playstation.com/2021/02/23/introducing-the-next-generation-of-vr-on-playstation/#sf243317607
DaivRules
If VR 2 is PS5 only, this might bode well for a price drop on VR 1 and continue to offer two VR solutions for Playstation gamers. That would help further VR adoption and give gamers a less expensive option to get into VR gaming. Excited to see what Sony does with the second generation of VR hardware and the capabilities of the PS5.
Popular Post MikeCheck--
Exciting news that it is actually confirmed! Never had a doubt in my mind, until I played on my Vita for that reminder. With how well the PS5 plays with the PS4 I am expecting most games from the PSVR1 library to function and work on the PSVR2. The only question is whether Sony will keep using an external camera or switch to the more recent inside out tracking. If the PSVR2 still uses an external camera (newer one obviously) then I don't see why backwards compatibility wouldn't function just fine with PSVR1 games using the DualShock and Move controllers If the PSVR2 uses inside out tracking then there are really two options: Sony allows the PSVR1 camera to work with the PSVR2 so that PSVR1 games can be played via backwards compatibility with the Moves and DualShock 4. Sony abandons the PSVR1 camera. This would mean developers would have to patch their game to the PSVR2 and update their controller layouts from the Move to the new controller. This is much more tedious and requires more resources. I see option one as most likely from both a business & technical standpoint. I also would only see the big games doing this = profitable. For now this is all speculation. It could have B.C. to a degree, or none at all. I'm sure it's much more difficult to pull off with Virtual Reality. If they do confirm backwards compatibility, it is a day one buy for me, easily. It would be way too tedious to revisit PSVR1 games if it isn't. So we have: Better tracking (MAYBE inside out tracking, no camera) Not wireless, BUT only one cord! New controller incorporating some DualSense features Not releasing 2021, so likely holiday 2022. I've got plenty of VR games to keep me busy until then! Hopes are high for backwards compatibility for most VR titles! BlackCatBurrito
Still having a cable is very disappointing, it completely holds back the device but better quality VR on Playstation is only a win.
JavaNext
Awesome news, Ive been holding off on PS VR because of this. Very curious about the new controllers, hopefully they have some kind of index like tech.

thefourfoldroot
Fuck yeah!!!!! Astro Bot Rescue Mission 2 at release please! Really needed those better controllers. Hopefully with inside out tracking. 35 minutes ago, BlackCatBurrito said: Still having a cable is very disappointing, it completely holds back the device but better quality VR on Playstation is only a win. No it’s fantastic news. It means it’ll be using the power of ps5 with no lag, and no need for expensive on board processors. Also implies no breakout box. kingofbattle8174
I just got first gen last year, and I was blown away then. Gen 2 will maybe make my head explode from awesomeness.
sepheroithisgod
I might be interested enough to buy the VR this time around assuming it can play older VR titles. I think the library is starting to get big enough to warrant the purchase, which was my major complaint. That said, if it doesn't support older titles, then it will have the same issue for me.
milanbarca82
Great news. I hope it's gonna be as good as its PC counterparts.
dannyswfc9
Wow where as 4 years gone. I thought that vr2 was gonna be wireless unless that was just pure rumour. Hopefully they support the current vr a bit longer but im afrad they wont due to the fact its not compatable with ps5 unless you use a special adapter. Hopefully vr2 will have a bigger choice of games and some freebees on plus in the future. I have always been excited about the future of vr. Even tho the current vr was mind blowing, its got so much more potential

parkerdip
Just one cable is a dream. I can’t bring myself to set up vr on my ps5 because of all the cables and with ps5 taking up more space having to fit in that processor unit. if it was wireless it would be more expensive and I’m sure they want to keep it an affordable option plus there are advantages to a cable as has been mentioned about lag. me_is_caveman
They really should make the headset wireless for the VR 2. That wire dangling from the headset can sometimes feel like it gets in the way when playing.
Beyondthegrave07
Good to see Sony still supporting VR. As a VR owner, I'm excited to see how it evolves. Hoping that PSVR 1 will still be supported though even after it's released.
DrBloodmoney
Awesome! A new silly hat for me to not buy, and to lock out a few more ?%’s behind a £400 paywall in real games that have a tacked-on, 5minute VR mode ??? I like to try and be positive about things on here, but this does seem like flogging a dead horse. I mean, good for those still hanging on the the VR dream I guess, but I fear that ship sailed some time ago... ...if even a new Half Life can’t coax out a bigger audience for VR, i’m not sure what can. ?♂️
Xylobe
Would love if they mentioned whether they're aiming for any kind of PSVR1 backwards compatibility, but I guess it's still too far out for those kinds of details.

We got plenty of time to figure it out though. Nothing set in stone! Haha. ?

If they had a wireless option I'd want there to be a wired one as well - the wire is not that big a deal; and it's definitely worth being able to binge Skyrim VR for hours on end. I can't imagine the headset would be nearly as efficient or lightweight with relying on battery power.

I suppose for next gen it’ll be “PS5, VR.” Even if backwards compatibility works, that would fall under “PS4, VR.” Thanks for the input ?
TrophyChief
Excited to see this! I have yet to purchase a VR set but will wait until the next version officially comes out now. Was in no hurry to get one and was late to the party when they first came out. Nice to see that Sony will continue to invest in the VR gaming medium. I have a feeling it will be PS5-only, as it will probably need the horsepower and other features of the PS5. I really hope PS4 VR gets a big price drop as well, around $200 or so for a bundle. I've wanted PS VR for over a year now, but I can't justify the price relative to how much I'll get out of it.
