The worst collectibles trophy you've gone for

I'm sure @MikeCheck-- and @KyonKuchiki can agree with me that the Windlands 2 collectibles were pretty terrible to do

Sadly no one will ever feel our pain.

- Open world

- No mini-map

- No in game help or hints

- The only help you get is a slight 'noise'.

- It's in VR.

Yeah, easily the worst. People on here complaining about games that have collectible walkthroughs or in game mini-maps with icons lmao.

Pretty much any Assassins Creed game or Ubisoft game in general. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is another contender for the sole reason it has buggy collectibles that might lock you out of platinum forcing you to restart the game.

But the only game i've given up on the collectibles that i can think of is The Witcher 3. I hate Gwent. I went for almost every non Gwent trophy but didn't get a single trophy related to that travesty of a card game. Also tons of them are missable. Missable collectibles is my nightmare.

any kind of game that doesn't have a chapter select or makes you collect everything in one run, amnesia for example because I missed out on a couple of notes in a blind playthrough and had to go back, also Trine 4 was very annoying (even though you get level select) you don't get chapter select and levels on that game can get boring going back over them

I'd go for riddler trophies on Batman Arkham City.

So many of them to find and then having the opportunity to go for the riddler side missions.

Too bad because those missions are good but getting the 282 riddler trophies was way too boring (knowing that the gameplay on this game is really outdated); killing the 200 flying rats on GTA IV was even better because I had fun to explore and walk around in Liberty City at least...

I'm still working on it periodically, but the gold crowns in Monster Hunter WorldBorne.

You have to capture/kill every monster in the game both as big as they can be, and as small as they can be.  They have a very slim chance to spawn whatever size, roughly 3% but there's tricks to boost this upwards a bit.  I've over 430 hours into this game on my file, but I've spent more downloading cloud saves for investigations so I've easily spent 200+ hours on this alone.  I only have 6 monsters left but even then I was grinding to a crawl where I'd maybe get 3 crowns after 12 hours.  So many Seething Bazelgeuses and etc.

you can also roughly measure the monster (i.e. run up to it and compare it to a You Tube video) but the amount of times I was so certain it was crown sized, only to be told it wasn't is enervating after awhile.

a few other notable examples:

  • Tomb Raider Underworld: the last collectable glitched, and I had to do an entire second playthrough.
  • Valley: there's no in-game counter, nor is there a way to know where you have and haven't gotten certain items.  I followed a youtube video, twice, because I skipped over one.
  • Tales of Symphonia: Titles.  This meant 150+ hours, 4 FULL playthroughs.  My second playthrough I didn't even have enough grade for stuff like 6x exp.  Doesn't even matter because the dungeons in that game are so puzzle-focused a playthrough is dozens of hours long (as opposed to new tales games dungeons which are basically linear)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: not really a collectable, but getting every ending badge meant playing through that game 8 times.  I did 9 because the first one was purely blind.
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Getting dog tags mean having to play through Raiden's Chapter on each difficulty, and beating it, *while* shaking down every single guard by sneaking behind them, lightly pressing the x button (pushing it harder meant shooting the gun and tranq/killing them.  oops.) and then forcing them to do a little dance and drop their dogtags.  the hardest part is actually beating the game on the hardest difficulty, because you'll basically have the number of tags you need for the last cheat item to unlock by 20% into the story, but you *need* to fight all the ridiculously hard bosses.  I actually cheesed most of them and wrote a guide on gamefaqs about this years ago when I did it.
  • Nier Gestalt / Nier Replicant: Not necessarily a collectible, but getting all the weapons up to max (twice) meant days and days of farming materials.
  • Assassin's Creed Unity: Chests.  Not too hard in theory, but playing that game is like sliding on sandpaper for miles.
  • Night in the Woods: getting Mae's notebook filled out trophy meant 4 playthroughs, playing a *very* hard twin stick shooter in her room, and waiting for dev's to patch it before reattempting.
  • Until Dawn: perfect example of not knowing which way is exploring, and which way progresses the story hard locking you out of where you just where.  impossible without a guide.
  • Terraria: Getting all the pets, all the armors.  I have distinct memories of hours of reloading, exploring ice caves to find a baby penguin pet.  Whenever the game updates, these trophies got harder, too, because it required 100% as is, not as when the game released.
  • Tales of Xillia 2: Not a collectible, per se, but some of the trophies require you to grind out skills that characters can do hundreds of times.  There's 9 party members.  One trophy is for doing a specific move 4050 times.  I spent a month on this I think in college with a skill that made me only do 1-damae per hit, and just going ham on monsters for hours and hours and hours.
  • Mini Ninjas: There's numerous collectible types in this game, and if you reply a level it overwrites what you had at the end.  There's also no way to track this.

Love to see AC Rogue being mentioned... I'm currently playing it ?

Need for Speed Payback has a trophy for collecting all casino chips (which doesn't serve any purpose). Some of these chips are mid-air placed which can only be reached via a very specific jump and with the correct speed and angle. Sometimes it takes dozens of retries.

All of them. I respect when devs put "find 50% of collectibles" in, that's doable even without ridiculous scanning of every inch of a level. But every single collectible? I don't recall collecting 100% of collectibles in any game without help unless they were marked on map. So in the end, it's just sitting X hours with youtube guide on a laptop next to me. No challenge, no fun, nothing, just bullshit.

honorable mentions
GTA IV and GTAs in general - IV's shoot 200 pigeons is pretty infamous trophy, but other GTA titles aren't much better. In older games, collectibles at least stood out, in GTA V, they're basically slightly illuminated litter on the ground
Mafia II - if devs wanted players to hate them and their faces, they succeded. Remaster added even more bullshit.
Jedi Fallen Order - this one is here for the awful unreadable map rather than actual collectibles, making finding them harder than it should be
Arkham Knight - all Arkham games suffers from Riddler's trophies, but Knight adds insult to injury by hiding true ending behind those 243 green shits
random bullshit from AssCreed games - from feathers to chests, pick your poison
and probably the actually worst offender for me - Skyrim and its Barenziah Stones - while probably not the most annoying hunt with a guide, but good god, I feel like it was put into game just to fuck with players. My favorite part was that once you put a Stone in your inventory, you can't remove them and not only that, but they don't stack either, so you can't even ignore them. At least there's no trophy involved.

Tech Orbs from Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Do I even have to say anything about that? Having to replay one of the levels at least 5 times or so just because I missed a couple of Orbs was really aggravating.

I just wrapped this one a couple weeks ago. You pretty much have to follow a video walkthrough, because it’s next to impossible to find all of them by yourself without any help.

The big open area at the beginning of Chapter 5 was painful. Also there is a glitched orb in Chapter 9 that only seems to show up whenever it feels like it.

Ubisoft and collectibles go hand in hand.

I loved Gwent. Thought about picking up that one game based off of Gwent but the online was already shut down by the time I considered it.

Trine 2: Complete Story has far worse collectibles. Trust me.

Arkham City was very well done. Decent open world without being too convoluted.

A portion of those Riddler trophies were practically puzzles. I eventually did them all by myself, but a few almost had me looking at a video guide.

Regardless, Arkham Knight has worse Riddler trophies. Some you have to combine the Batmobile and some of Batman’s personal gadgets to obtain. Made for some good times.

The pigeons were horrible in GTA IV. Been a long time since I played the game.

The original Assassin's Creed on PS3.  No trophies for this game, but I tried to find every single flag in the game without a guide.  I almost finished it too, but couldn't find the last few.  So I gave up.

Xbox 360 has 44 achievements for this game, including the stupid flag collecting. Easily the worst collectibles in the franchise. Makes those feathers from Assassin’s Creed 2 like child’s play.

The blue crystals in Infamous 1. My dumbass must have clicked R3 1000's of times, hopping from rooftop to rooftop looking for that last blue crystal.

It was the most fun when you knew there was a shard in the area, but the game couldn’t register it after pressing R3 because it was at a higher level of ground than you.

I’d rather replay inFamous 2 two more times before finding all 350 blast shards again.

Tearaway unfolded. The amount of collectibles you have to get to 100% and platinum the game is ridiculous. A lot of them are frustrating to get like confetti where if you are missing one, you'll have to go through all areas in the entire level because theres no way to tell which one it is.

This is another game on my backlog. Between this and Knack and Darksiders 2, collectibles are a bitch.

I ended up liking the original Tearaway on PS Vita. Not sure how this one compares.

To be perfectly honest, collectibles suck the fun out of a lot of games for me. It’s awesome when you’re just missing a few for a trophy and you’re forced to replay a giant portion of the game for that platinum.

There was absolutely no reason to add additional posters in Mafia II. Yet when it launched, they somehow made the remaster look worse than the original on the PS3/360.

Those damn pigeons in GTA IV, there was no in game counter, and it was up to Jesus if you would get it or not, for me the trophy never popped.....fml never again.

Ha, that was mine too.  I did about 15-20 pigeons back in the day and was like no dawg, this isn’t for me.  Not sure you can say I really tried for it but that was enough….

EDIT - For one, I went for and achieved, you might be able to say Ultimate Collector in NBA 2K20 (Rarity of 0.39%) except that I honestly enjoyed building up my collection through completing challenges, events, and working the Auction House.

To me anyway, it was more enjoyable because you work to it through natural gameplay even if it was a long grind (over many months).

Collecting all the Crystals in Fe. You need them to unlock all the abilities in the game (trophy)
I usually love going for collectibles so this was a really bad one for me, the counter can also glitch which makes it even worse. Visuals won't help for spotting them and the best bet one has is to use a video and try your best to understand where they are

Animals in RDR2, because you are relying on RNG on top of the usual grinding and watching videos. It took me probably two weeks to get the freaking bull moose to spawn. Also the squirrel statues where you have to collect perfect hides/carcasses. Those two things alone would make it bad but then there's like 4-5 other collectible type things you need to go for as well.

Honorable mention to any long game that has permanently missable collectables (looking at you, Gwent...)

The stupid figmies in pshyconauts , destroy the platinum for me, i hated the just cause 4 collectibles because there are many ridiculous stunts, in GTA V the motherfucking jumps were the worst because the jump to the lighthouse was very annoying, sometimes for me the collectibles are at the same level of online trophies

I'm playing NieR Replicant right now.

I have notes. NOTES on materials and where to find and how many of an item I need.

Also they are grindy, did all of the junk fishing (Rusted Clump was a pain to get), black pearls and Machine parts (A Shade Entombed mission helped) today between missions.
