Welcome back, animal lovers, to another year of Gaming for the Animals!

 

Didn't participate last year? Here's a rundown of how this event works: I am yet again looking to symbolically adopt an animal, but it's up to you guys to help me decide which one! How are you gonna do that? By platting some games that feature animals!

 

This is how the event will go: every completed game counts for one vote towards the animal we will (symbolically) adopt. You do not have to donate anything to participate in this event, I will be the one paying for the adoption kit at the end of the allotted time.

 

You may ask: what's in it for me? Well not only will you get to have input on how I spend money, but if you complete three games you'll get a nifty badge to show that you participated!

 

Start Date: July 4th (your own timezone)

End Date: August 15th, midnight (also your own timezone)

Animal choices here! (Deadline to vote for a new animal is August 1st)

  1. What do you have to do? Plat a game that has an animal in it! Obvious choices include mascot games like Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, etc, but I'm not gonna be too picky. You wanna play Digimon, Nexomon, something like that? I'll count it. Is there an animal sidekick thing like in the Tales games? Yup, it counts! As long as the animal itself is a prominent feature in the game AND you do not kill them, it's fine!
  2. Every game you play does NOT have to feature the animal that you want to vote for! Do you want to vote towards a dolphin but played a certain PS mascot series that features a certain raccoon? Go ahead, vote for Ecco!
  3. EZPZ games will not count. What does this mean? If the player uses Autopop, OR if the fastest (not obviously Autopopped or cheated) time on the Fastest Leaderboard section is under 30 minutes, OR the 50th place on the 'Fastest Leaderboard' is under one and a half hours, it will not be counted.
  4. When you complete a game be sure to let me know what animal you are voting for! Here are the options in case you're on the fence!
  5. Last year's winners cannot be voted for! That means any votes for the green turtle or the capybara will not count, and I will ask you to pick another animal from the list. On the plus side, if you're a fan of one of those two animals I hear the badge this year might feature them...
  6. Speaking of badges, this year you will need to have completed three games for this event to get a badge!
  7. Plats that were achieved before July 4th will not count. It's cool if you want to continue a game you already started, but for it to count the plat must be popped between July 4th and August 15th.
  8. You can play a game that does not have a plat, but in that case you will need to 100% the game, including DLC. If the game has a plat, however, you just need a plat. DLC alone will not count for this event
  9. Do you want to vote for more than one animal? Well... Sure! You're welcome to vote for multiple animals, but to get those votes you'll need more than one plat. Remember: each plat = one vote.
  10. Please wait a week after a game is released before claiming it! This gives me an idea of how fast a particular platinum is :)
  11. You are limited to ten votes, so use them wisely!

 

May I use the game if...

 

  • The animal is the main character? Of course!
  • The animal is a companion to the main character? Yes!
  • The animal is fictional/extinct? Yes!
  • The player can summon the animal? Yes!
  • What about characters like Spiderman? Yes!
  • Humans that have animal traits in general? Humanoid animals? Sure!
  • The game is about learning about animals? (Games like Beyond Blue) Absolutely!
  • The animal is ONLY an enemy or obstacle? No, unless they become friendly afterwards AND are prominent throughout the game.
  • The animal is set dressing? No.
  • The game is about hunting animals like those Cabela games? Sorry, but absolutely not :(

 

My two big things with this is that the animals must have some sort of significance (not something like "oh I had to sneak past a dog in level x") and you don't kill them. Again, I can be convinced in special cases, but if you use those two points as guidelines it should be fine.

Hi guys! I know I've posted this year's Gaming for the Animals a bit early, but that's because I have a change to the rules that may mean people need to plan a bit more: to earn a badge you need to finish three games! I've added a couple of new things to the FAQ, so be sure to read them over :)

 

Start date is July 4th, so you have plenty of time to save some games up! Get excited for another fun summer event :D

I assume that's finish 3 games - non plat games would still count for the minimum badge requirement rule?

Oh, this looks really fun, plus it's a great cause! I'm going to join as well. (Plus I'm a sucker for events with badges, lol!)

 

Just for clarification, I could have games with partial trophy progress before the start of the event - I only need to pop the platinum on or after July 4th, correct? 

 

Though, I didn't realize that there are so many animals to pick from! A maximum of 10 votes feels cruel! ...Though, I haven't even looked through my backlog to see if I have enough games that are eligible - so my voting choices might be even harder to make. ?

I did not realize that bees and cobras were endangered species! We need to protect the bees, without them honey cannot exist and we would all die from lack of oxygen due to massive plant extinction due to lack of pollination!

 

Oh, and I love snakes, so sue me if I want one of the most poisonous snakes to not go extinct, especially since it inspired a Pokemon called Arbok, one of my favorite Pokemon. :)

 

Since I don't know how much it costs to join you in symbolic adoption, I might as well just participate in this event. World of Final Fantasy has a lot of Mirages which look like animals and you can capture them and raise them like Pokemon as allies, so I guess that game will go on hiatus until Independence Day. Fair enough, it'll let FFXII: The Zodiac Age get some work in.

Bumblebees are a dfferent set of species from honeybees. Domestic honeybees are fine, but most of their wild relatives are suffering from stuff like being affected by chemicals that are supposed to kill pests - and sometimes even from lack of food due to the sheer number of honeybees humans bring eating it all up.

 

Not all of these are directly endangered as species, some are stand-ins for their natural habitat which is shrinking or other larger issues.

E.g. peacocks are fine and common throughout Eurasia (they were introduced in europe as pets, mostly present in castles where they roam freely among the tourists), but the jungles they originally hail from are in danger.

OH YOU KNOW I'M UP FOR THIS! and I couldn't help but laugh as I saw the rule that got added cause of me last year xD

 

I already have a few games planned, F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch , Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series + 2, Crash Bandicoot: Warped and the Shantae series as Shantae herself can transform into Animals through the POWER OF BELLY DANCE!
