Jim Ryan is retiring from PlayStation

While I'm neutral to this, I'm happy for Jim Ryan's retirment and hope for his future. Let's hope the new CEO can do Sony better.

Jim Ryan wasn't completely useless, but he was so wrong for PlayStation. 

Yes, he's not some totalitarian who made the vast majority of top to bottom PlayStation choices. But he still said and did a lot of stupid things.

His attitude about classic games was beyond stupid. It's one thing to not support them enthusiastically on your newer hardware (even if it is a problem). It's another to ask why anyone would play PS1 and PS2 Gran Turismo games. Though that comment was before he was at the top.

He also ignored initial complaints about the paltry storage of the PS5 SSD and no other way to store PS5 games at launch. It took until April 2021 to store PS5 games on HDD. And it took until September 2021 to support M2 SSD expansion (which itself has plenty of issues). Xbox is so much better in this regard. You could store Xbox Series games on an HDD at launch and use the SSD memory cards at launch as well (though they are very expensive when not on sale).

He said PlayStation would never recover if PlayStation versions of COD were worse.

And of course, the recent big PS Plus price hikes, and other stuff I haven't mentioned. 

All in all, I am glad he's leaving. However, I hope someone worse doesn't replace him.

Well, one thing is for sure. You can't say he did a bad job. His work in Europe before becoming boss absolutely crushed Xbox and then as boss the PlayStation has only grown stronger and stronger. While the Live Service push is a good start to becoming more like Nintendo in being immune to whatever Microsoft might try, hopefully someone more able to handle that situation takes over. My hope is someone with a more gaming background takes over who expands 1st party studios into all genres and gets more Japanese studios working. Someone more able to handle Microsoft's PR machine also. Jim Ryan took the high road on all this and largely just ignored Microsoft's efforts, which is admirable, but as we can see in this very thread, it can lead to a lot of negativity as you've allowed them to spread that garbage unchallenged.

Imagine saying this when Xbox is ran by Phil Spencer, who even if you believed his obvious fake persona before, is now completely exposed. The PlayStation brand is stronger than ever today while Xbox's has only grown weaker under Spencer's reign of failure.

The sony PS4/5 exclusives have all pretty much launched bug free day 1 with zero microtransations and the worst scored was days gone that still got an 8.5/10?. It could get so much worse if one of those guys like Bobby K takes over.

 

He did some gaffs here and there, doesn't put on an act of being your gamer friend like Spencer, and as he rarely speaks it makes him appear distant as people will naturally compare him to Spencer who does nothing but speak. Microsoft's astroturfing machine has also been targeting him for years to drive up hate against PlayStation to Xbox's benefit (they hoped, a failure as usual for team green), but it's only effect is what you'll see from reactions to his retirement. A bunch of people online thinking he was a bad boss (simply factually wrong), and everyone else not really caring all that much because Jim Ryan to them was just a faceless guy who was in charge of PlayStation and seemed to do a good job considering PlayStation has been doing so well.

Unlikely. The Live Service games are supposed to help reduce Sony's need for third parties, something you want to have when Microsoft is out there buying everyone up.

In my opinion, we need someone who actually plays video games and shares the level of passion that we do as gamers, and gives us the services, experiences and level of customer satisfaction that we deserve. Sony need to remember they are "for the players", and that tag line needs to be honored. However, no hate to Jim Ryan, I hope he made the best decision for himself. As long as he's happy, then who am I to judge?

People buy into all sorts of things. The matter of who has done better for the brand is a factual matter however, so they are simply wrong, and to do anything other than accept that is to deny reality.

The problem is... are the demographics really in favour of that. That is my worry. It ain't complete death like Xbox, but the number of buys on PlayStation for those games by comparison to Nintendo tends to not look great. PlayStation still gets most still, but there are misses.

Yes, please do. I've seen a lot of people who bring that up and then don't go into why exactly it is some great evil.

Take it as a learning experience. Being angry/annoyed at what Microsoft has done is correct enough (though this thread isn't on that subject directly), but no good comes from looking bad yourself by targeting others without much reason. Happy retirement Jimbo, while some of his takes were rather stupid you cannot say he did nothing for PlayStation, and he isn't like you know who at the other company that being said good luck to the new person hopefully they're a gamer at least as that certainly helps with the job at hand.
