Big Ol' List of Upcoming Horror Games

Recommended Posts

Special Game Awards 2021 update. Today was The Game Awards event and there's been three changes to the list:

-NEW: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Game added

-Untitled Bokeh Game Studios Game is now titled Slitterhead. Trailer added.

-Alan Wake 2 moved from Rumored to Confirmed. Trailer added.

I'm surprised and happy for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre news. The original 1974 film is my favorite horror movie all time and despite there being some cheesy entries, I enjoy the series as a whole. There's a new movie coming to Netflix in February. I played the heck out of Friday the 13th: The Game and if TCM is anything like it, it should be a good time.

Stay tuned. The next update could be in about a week. On Thursday, December 16th there will be the Madnight 2021 Horror Showcase and possibly some games announced for consoles then.

Christmastime update (The slay bells ring)

10 new games have been added!

Confirmed/Announced

Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare | Chasing Static | Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle | Dying: 1983 | FOBIA: St. Dinfna Hotel | Injection π23 – Ars Regia | In Nightmare | Opus Castle

Rumored/Likely/Console Plans

Paranoid | Tormentor

Other recent changes

-The Signifier: Director's Cut added to different genre games list

-Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach released. Removed from list & archived

-System Shock Remake consoles updated, release date added, article added, 2nd video added

-Slitterhead third person info added, article 3 added

Also, the previously mentioned Madnight 2021 Horror Showcase event took place Dec. 16. It was an interesting presentation with a "Hell messenger", actors, NSFW scenes, and other weird stuff. It showcased many upcoming horror titles from Madmind Studio and partners. Platforms were not listed but most are for PC and a couple are for console. There was a VR version of Agony, an autopsy simulator, a torture themed game, and other unique titles. The two games set to appear on console (PS5) are Paranoid and Tormentor. The showcase can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/8GEG_QbPqyg

Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare has a bit of controversy attached to it. It's being worked on with the director of Cannibal Holocaust. Par for the course. Chasing Static's retro aesthetic is charming but it's published by Ratalaika and is a short game. It's currently on Steam. There's more games to explore but that's it from me for now.

Merry Christmas ya filthy animals and have a happy new year. A new year with a new batch of that sweet horror goodness is on the way.

January & February Roundup

I updated the list the past two months as the horror game news came in and piled up. Here's what's been added and changed.

Jan:

  • NEW: Do Not Open added. The list's first VR only title!
  • Dying Light 2 2nd and final trailer added
  • In Nightmare release date, article, and 2nd trailer added
  • Paranoid new article 1 and moved to Confirmed/Announced

Feb:

  • NEW: MADiSON added. This one looks like a cross between Visage and Fatal Frame and it looks phenomenal. Definitely looking forward to MADiSON!
  • NEW: The Dark Pictures Anthology: Season 2 added. All five names of the Season 2 titles were revealed via a trademark filing.
  • Dying Light 2 released. Moved to archive.
  • Evil Dead: The Game release date changed. New release date is May 13th, 2022
  • Ikai release date changed. New release date is TBA. It fell out of it's January 2022 release window.
  • Martha is Dead revealed to have censored content on PlayStation but not XBox or PC. Article 4 and the now closed PSNProfiles topic 2 added.
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Game revealed to be 3v4 asymmetrical multiplayer and article 2 added. Judging by the game's cover art it will be four survivors running from three killers: Leatherface and his two brothers, Drayton and Nubbins Sawyer. This is definitely a unique setup and I don't think it's been done before. Can't wait to see more! As an aside, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film is out on Netflix in just a couple days (Feb. 18). Gotta watch that.
  • Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle 2nd trailer added.
  • Atomic Heart, Chernobylite (PS5), Ripout, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 added to different genre games list.
  • Messing with font sizes. Using 22 for new categories and 18 for games. Everything is not 14 anymore. Hopefully it looks better now.

Thanks for the info and also ty for the being the first to contribute to the list! Now I need to make a credits section :highfive:

That looks interesting. I like the gritty WWI setting. We’ll see how it turns out. I’ll add this in the next update. Saw it’s coming to Steam and GOG but didn’t see consoles confirmed (unless you know otherwise?). The creator did say they will do everything they can to port it so this will find a place in the console plans category nicely. Hopefully we see it on PS.

I'm a backer and the dev told me it will come to consoles just a bit later than on pc. Nonetheless, still a great game!

Horror Games Roundup from the last ~60 days

(In time order to show what happened when)

State of Play in early June then Summer Game Fest 2022 produced noteworthy news. It was awesome to see so many horror games highlighted in both. Mostly due to Callisto Protocol and all of the various Resident Evil titles.

April

  • Fobia: St. Dinfna Hotel possible release date, preorder link, and video 2 added
  • The Quarry video 2 added
  • NEW: Conscript added. Thanks to Ptirle for info and the addition! This looks like a cool top down horror set during WWI.
  • Chernobylite for PS5 released. Moved to different genre games archive
  • Evil Dead: The Game video 3 added
  • Injection π23 – Ars Regia May 23rd release date added
  • The House of the Dead Remake released. Moved to different genre games archive

May

  • Resident Evil Re:Verse added to different genre games list. There was recent news about this forgotten shooter set in the Resident Evil universe and now more than ever, it looks like it could release this year.
  • Dead Space Remake release date and article 4 added. Also a non-important video was removed to tighten it up
  • Evil Dead: The Game released. Moved to archive. This one was reviewed well and popular with players. Always good to see.
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre video 2 added. A game vs. original film comparison video. It's unreal how authentic the locations are going to be in the game.
  • NEW: The Chant added. A trippy and good looking third person horror game coming out this Fall for PS5
  • NEW: Silent Hill 2 Remake rumored game added. Supposedly it is a PS5 exclusive from Bloober Team. If true, this would be a dream to many players. SH2 is a classic and one of my favorite games also. Rumors should be taken with a grain of salt though. Then you won't be disappointed if doesn't happen.
  • Fobia: St. Dinfna Hotel June 28th release date, article 3, and video 3 added. This is turning out to look like a pretty good RE7-like horror game.
  • Injection π23 – Ars Regia released. Moved to archive
  • The Quarry multiplayer update delay info, article 3, and video 3 added. Online multiplayer will be added to the game via update by July 8th. Local multiplayer is still available day one.
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre console (PS5), a link to "The Hub" (official website with more info), article 3, and PSNProfiles topic added. Moved from Rumored... to Confirmed.
  • NEW: White Day: A Labyrinth Named School for PS5 added. PS5 version of the already released PS4 game.
  • Saint Kotar moved from Rumored... to Confirmed. Consoles, October 14th release date, article 2, and video 1 added
  • MADiSON two week delay. Release date changed from June 24th to July 8th and video 3 added. Still hyped for this one.

June

  • Resident Evil 4 Remake moved from Rumored... to Confirmed. Console (PS5), release date (March 24, 2023), article 3, and video 1 added. The start of the crazy, fun June news!
  • NEW: Resident Evil Village for PSVR2 added. This is supposedly a port of the PS5 game for use with the upcoming PSVR2. It's strange how they didn't mention it to be an update to the existing game. Guess we'll see.
  • Callisto Protocol release date (December 2nd), article 3, and videos 2 and 3 added
  • NEW: The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution added. This was a nice surprise. Coming out on PS4 & PSVR late 2022 and early 2023 for PS5 & PSVR2
  • TAPE: Unveil the Memories for PS5 added to different genre games list. PS5 version of the already released PS4 game coming out this Fall
  • Abandoned article 2 added. This game is looking... well, abandoned.
  • NEW: Overdose rumored game added. Supposedly the new horror game from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions
  • NEW*: Untitled Layers of Fear Project renamed Layers of Fears and moved from Rumored... to Confirmed. Console (PS5), release date (Early 2023), article 2, and video 2 added. The lid has been lifted on the new title in the Layers of Fear franchise and it looks great! *Kinda new
  • The Quarry released. Moved to archive. This too was reviewed well and is popular among players. Great to see.
  • System Shock Remake video 3 added. This game's come a long way.
  • Resident Evil 2 for PS5 released. Moved to archive.
  • Resident Evil 3 for PS5 released. Moved to archive.
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard for PS5 released. Moved to archive. Capcom Showcase at Summer Game Fest: 'Surprise! All three are out today cause why not'
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre video 3 added. Gameplay with violence and kills is shown.
  • NEW: Signalis added. A gnarly looking indie retro-style third person sci-fi survival horror inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Too many descriptors, ahh.

Misc

  • Credits section added. Ptirle is first member to suggest a game that was added to the list!
  • Changelog and Archive separated. Makes things easier and is better organized.
  • Added Bonus section with another big ol' list of horror games. This time by a user on IMDb who lists over a thousand horror games dating back to 1972. It's interesting and a trip back to memory lane.
  • Added a Stalled, less likely to release, or has not received updates category. There have been no signs and no news to change anyone's mind on the outlook of these titles. It is unfortunate but it might be best they receive their own category near the bottom of the list. Good thing is the games that are confirmed or likely to release will be easier to see. I hesitate to add a title to this category. There must be no updates in a long time or in Abandoned's case, reports that it's stalled, been placed on hold, or otherwise looking all doom and gloom. Hopefully some of these titles will be able to break out of this category and I will move them accordingly.

The games moved from Confirmed category to the new Stalled category:

Abandoned, Borneo, Do Not Open, Ghosts, Opus Castle

The games moved from Rumored category to the new Stalled category:

Once Upon a Time in Roswell, Project Nightmares Case 36: Henrietta Kedward

Edit: Just realized I’ve been doing this 6 months. 6 months and we have 69 total games guys. Also if the mobile phone doesn’t load this have to restart phone to get the memory back. It’s gotten too big.

Another follower here :)

The Callisto Protocol, Dead Space Remake, Alan Wake II and Resident Evil 4 have all peaked my interest.

Even Layers of Fears looks more like the first game (which was better than the second imo) so I'll probably be picking that up too.

A very good year for us horror fans!

Horror Games Roundup from the last ~60 days

(In time order to show what happened when)

A bunch of new horror game announcements this round but surprisingly, not many announced for the soon-coming spooky season. With Halloween just two and half months away, there's only been a couple titles announced for release in the Fall and a couple with October launches. None specifically mentioned Halloween. Until now! Excellent survival horror The Beast Inside has been announced for Halloween '22. The next scheduled roundup due mid-October should be interesting. Maybe we'll see a lot more games with October or Halloween launches. The best time of the year is near!

June

  • NEW: DreadOut 2 added. Two years after releasing on PC, players will see a port of the Asian and picture-taking third person survival horror on July 20th.
  • NEW: Bloodwash added. Revealed at the Puppet Combo Direct Show and releasing Fall '22. Puppet Combo's old school vibes are charming and this first person survival horror set in a laundromat is no exception. Get ready for retro laundry terror!
  • Fobia: St. Dinfna Hotel released. Moved to archive
  • The Chant article 3 and video 2 added. We see what the story is about and some creature designs. The Chant is looking fantastic.
  • Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle release date change. It slipped out of it's Early '22 release window and is now targeting sometime this year.
  • NEW: SENSEs: Midnight added. The sequel to Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story is out on PC and planning a console launch but nothing announced yet.
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me release date (Fall '22), article 3, and video 2 added.

July

  • Last Days of Lazarus added to different genre games list
  • Inscryption added to different genre games list
  • MADiSON released. Moved to archive
  • Ad Infinitum consoles (PS4, PS5), release date (April 20, 2023), article 2, and video 2 added
  • NEW: Yomawari: Lost in the Dark added. This third person isometric and animated ghost tale is the third in the series and is releasing Oct. 25th and Oct. 28th, depending on the region.
  • NEW: Untitled Single Player, Action-Horror Aliens Game from Survios added. We know this will be a new storyline set between the Alien and Aliens films, who the developer is, and that it's being built in Unreal Engine 5 but that's about it. It sounds promising but we need more information.
  • Kona II: Brume added to different genre games list
  • Paradize Project added to different genre games list. This one stands out because it's from the team behind the How to Survive series and it pretty much looks like what How to Survive 3 would look like. If you like zombies and survival aspects, the HtS games are good fun. Especially when played in co-op. This one's due out next year for PS5.
  • DreadOut 2 released. Moved to archive

August

  • White Day: A Labyrinth Named School release date added. The PS5 version of the creepy, Korean chase-and-hide horror game will be releasing September 8, '22.
  • NEW: Outbreak: Shades of Horror. The typically underwhelming Outbreak series is getting a big boost with this new title. It's the team's biggest and most ambitious game yet. You can toggle first person, third person, or retro-style fixed camera modes. It is coming to PS5, will have online and offline co-op, and they are launching a Kickstarter here on August 31st.
  • Sherlock Holmes The Awakened added to different genre games list. Sherlock Holmes games developer, Frogwares, will be remaking their 2007 title from the ground up. It's coming to PS4 and PS5 in 2023. Early art and video of this Lovecraftian adventure looks amazing. As of right now, there is a Kickstarter campaign underway here and they have raised $174K of their $72K goal with 19 days to go. Two stretch goals have been unlocked, including the option to play as Dr. Watson. They are seeking additional funding due to the hardships of developing in Ukraine and the war with Russia.
  • NEW: Alone in the Dark added. This remake of the 1992 PC title went from rumored to confirmed in a matter of days. In early August, a German website stated a new Alone in the Dark was to be revealed soon. Then it was expected to be revealed at the THQ Nordic showcase on August 12th and a leak with screenshots appeared a day prior. It was one of the first games shown in the showcase and it looks good. The Alone in the Dark series is one of the first survival horror games (as we know them) and set the standard for games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Newer titles in the long running series panned but early titles were decent and important for the survival horror genre as a whole. Hoping for the best with the remake.
  • NEW: The Beast Inside added. This port of the highly regarded 2019 first person survival horror game for PC is due out Halloween '22 and is coming to PS4 and PS5. Consoles were always a goal, ever since the Kickstarter in early 2018. It released on PC and enjoyed success there but there was no word on the console versions. Finally, just recently, the team announced that console versions are coming Halloween. The Beast Inside has great graphics and an intriguing story line that gives the ability to play as two different protagonists in two different timelines. Also, fans of period pieces will enjoy playing as the character from the old times. It was really immersive.

See you in October!

Horror Games Roundup from the last ~60 days

(In time order to show what happened when)

The big October update! The last two months was teeming with horror game news. It started with Gamescom '22 and the surprise announcement of Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game as well as the long rumored Dead Island 2 being revealed. Then there was PAX West with some nice, interesting indie game announcements for PlayStation and PC and Tokyo Game Show '22 was after that. Finally, there was some renewed Silent Hill mumblings before the big news: a Silent Hill showcase that presented three new Silent Hill games as well as a streaming series and a new movie in the works. If you missed it, you can watch the Silent Hill Transmission showcase here. The following day we had a Resident Evil showcase that showed off Village's DLC and the Resident Evil 4 remake among other RE bits and bobs. So, back to back Silent Hill & Resident Evil showcases. What year is it anyway? Lots of interesting looking games including The Chant coming out in the next couple of weeks so look for the red coming soon release dates in the list and see if anything tickles your fancy. And this list finally hit 100 games total. It's at exactly 100 as of this update. Alright, let's get to it.

Older news (slipped through the cracks)

  • NEW: Gravewood High added. A mostly multiplayer experience currently available on PC
  • Paper Cut Mansion added to different genre games list
  • Sons of the Forest PC release date changed from October '22 to February '23. Still waiting for the good news that it's coming to consoles

August

  • The Chant release date (November 3rd), article 4, PSNProfiles topic, and video 3 added
  • Scars Above added to different genre games list
  • The Callisto Protocol video 4 added
  • NEW: Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game added. This was a totally unexpected announcement from Gamescom. KKfOS will be a 3v7 asymmetrical multiplayer title. All of us 80's kids can now act out the iconic and cult horror movie!
  • The Outlast Trials video 3 added. Fresh from Gamescom. Still waiting on console news for this one as well
  • NEW: Dead Island 2 added. Finally, after 8 years, the game is confirmed at Gamescom. The gameplay and trailers look beautiful and looks like it will be worth the wait. The release date is Feb. 3rd, 2023.
  • Layers of Fears article 3, PSNProfiles topic, and video 3 added
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me release date (November 18th), article 4, and video 3 added
  • System Shock video 4 added
  • Outbreak: Shades of Horror release window added. It is planned for Nov. 2025 (!)
  • Inscryption released. Moved to different genre games archive

September

  • Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open added to different genre games list
  • NEW: SCP: Secret Files added. This one has console plans, but none announced yet. It looks like a great way to experience the lore of the SCP universe
  • White Day: A Labyrinth Named School (PS5) released. Moved to archive
  • NEW: Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse added. Another remastered Fatal Frame title coming to current consoles. Nice.
  • NEW: Saturnalia added. This one looks absolutely intriguing. It has a roguelike element as the village you traverse is transformed and changed whenever you take over a new survivor to play. The art style is trippy too.
  • NEW: The Dark World: KARMA added. It's worth watching the crazy trailer from TGS '22 alone. It looks nuts and surreal but how or what it turns out to be is anyone's guess.
  • Resident Evil 4 console added (PS4). This is in addition to the already announced PS5 version
  • NEW: Unholy added. Not a lot to see with it's short, lone trailer but the visuals are gnarly
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Game release window (2023), articles 4 and 5, and video 4 added. It's an extended hands on preview so lots of gameplay shown and it looks like heaps of fun.
  • NEW: The Store is Closed added. Another game based in the SCP universe. This one has you surviving in an Ikea-style furniture store
  • NEW: Silent Hill: The Short Message added. This rumored SH game recently appeared on a Korean ratings site
  • NEW: Charon's Staircase added. A horror mystery tale coming Oct. 28th
  • NEW: The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation added. This Asian psychological horror looks fantastic and I am absolutely looking forward to it. It has a Very Positive rating on Steam so just hoping the port is done right. It appears you must run and hide from creepy doll-like monstrosities as they stalk you and it has a mannequin room. Mannequins that start with subtle movements. My weak spot. Yep, you heard it here-mannequins get me every time and send chills up my arm. (Thanks, BioShock)
  • NEW: Creepshow added. This intends to be an anthology style collection of game experiences just like the film it is based off. It is being headed up by DreadXP who have a lot of experience with their Dread X horror game compilations on PC along with the developer of the scary PC game, The Mortuary Assistant. It does plan on including other devs providing their own experiences and they all should make for an interesting final game if they can pull it off. Multiple consoles are planned.
  • The Callisto Protocol video 5 added

October

  • Dead Space video 3 added
  • Silent Hill 2 article 2 added. Silent Hill game rumor mumblings
  • Do Not Open moved from Stalled to Confirmed. Consoles, release dates, article 2, and video 2 added. This title has had a unique run on the list. It was the first VR only game to make the list then there was no news on it for the longest time. It seemed forgotten and was added to the list's Stalled category. Finally, all was revealed, and it will be releasing soon, on PS5 at least. It became the first game to move back out of the Stalled category. Supposedly, it is releasing on PS5 on Nov. 15th then early '23 for PS4, then sometime in '23 for PSVR2. It's unknown whether the PSVR2 version will be a standalone title or an update to the main game. It also mentioned making the PS4 version VR compatible. It's quite the confusing one but we'll see how it all works out soon enough. It should also be one of the very first PSVR2 horror games to release so it's worth keeping an eye on.
  • Bloodwash released. Moved to archive
  • The Chant video 4 added. Lots of gameplay shown including the combat system
  • Saint Kotar delayed two weeks and the new release date is Oct. 28th
  • Silent Hill 2 moved from Rumored to Confirmed. Console, info, article 3, PSNProfiles topic 2, and video 1 added. The big one from the Silent Hill Transmission stream. The rumored game from Bloober Team is official and will be making it's way to the PS5 sometime in the future. If Bloober Team messes this up they will never hear the end of it from the fervent Silent Hill fanbase.
  • NEW: Silent Hill Townfall added. Also from the Silent Hill Transmission. The teams working on it is all we know about this one
  • NEW: Silent Hill f added. Again, from the Silent Hill Transmission. This is a completely new story set in 1960's Japan and is from the developer of RE Resistance and RE: Re:Verse
  • Resident Evil 4 article 4 and videos 2 and 3 added. One with extended gameplay

Misc.

Buried in Ice moved from Confirmed to Stalled

Chasing Static moved from Confirmed to Stalled

Clarity on release dates in the list added to introduction

Possible Parasite Eve sequel or whatever called Symbiogenesis from Square Enix  https://thegamespoof.com/gaming-news/parasite-eve-could-return-thanks-to-square-enix/

Another good find, thanks Ptirle! A new trademark is a good sign. Ill keep an eye on it and if turns out to be a new entry in the Parasite Eve series I’ll add it and credit you.

Sorry for the late reply, ive been having the toughest time getting this list to load on my phone (newer iphone). I use to be able to restart phone to clear memory then pull it up in Safari but that stopped working. Firefox wont load it properly. Only one i found so far is Puffin. Not ideal and editing op seems like a lost cause. List has gotten too big. If anyone has suggestions how they load it on a mobile device id love to hear them. Loading and editing on PC is still fine.
