We are thrilled to announce that The Witcher Remake is being worked on! That's right, the game that started it all is being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. 

 

The game is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, where veteran Witcher series staff are involved. We, as CD PROJEKT RED, are providing full creative supervision. 

 

The Witcher Remake is what you might know by the codename “Canis Majoris”. It’s still early and we want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail, therefore, while we’re excited to share the news with you, we want to ask you for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail.

 

“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio, CD PROJEKT RED. “Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

Cool news but CDPR is putting way too many irons in the fire at once.

 

They couldn't do their newest IP justice and now they wanna do everything at the same time?

Oh man this will be amazing! And unlike other remakes, they can only improve from here (Witcher 1 was an amazing narrative game but it was a disaster gameplay wise).

I only hope they will keep the "nice" romance cards in  the game?

They recently said something along the lines of having a 6 years release window for the projects they're currently working on, and they hadn't announce this Remake yet, so it might at least be PS6 material, for sure.

OG was obviously never on consoles, and even with a good program it's kinda crappy with a gamepad (in my experience anyway), but that's mostly because the combat was rough regardless. Unlike most remakes, this is one that actually makes sense. Can't wait! Hopefully they don't "rewrite it for a modern audience."

Certainly, this is the kind of game that deserves a remake. It's a dated experience with great potential. 

 

But after CyPunk77, I'm not holding my breath. Interested, but will largely be forgotten for the next 5+ years it takes to complete it.

Maybe they've cut back on bring your cat to work days. So they will actually realise their concepts this time.

I kind of lost faith in CPDR with how disastrous Cyberpunk 2077 was. But i'm hopeful none the less. If they match the gameplay to the same standards as the withcer 3 then we surely will have a good time.

I never played the original, my first was Assassin of Kings, I wonder if it will be a more contained world or a big one like Witcher 3, regardless I'm pretty excited I love the world of The Witcher, finally enough games to warrant a PS5 for me.

The disaster of Cyberpunk wasn't entirely on them, there was some bad decisions coming from higher ups, ofc they decided to go along with it so I'm not saying they are blameless,  they did us right until the Witcher 3 which is one of the best games I have ever played so I have high hopes.

Excellent, it's about time that a game in actual need of a remake gets one! I hope they do the same for the sequel as I was always bummed about them not being on Playstation. I second the romance cards @Copanele! ?

This is... problematic.

 

You can tell when they made it, they didn't give 2 craps about the lore. Either they pull a Ratchet and Clank, where they change a huge part of the story... or they show the world, that at one point, they cared less about the lore than the Netflix series.

 

Don't get wrong I'm pretty excited. I just played 1 for the first time recently and loved it, despite that one glaring issue.

So codename Canis majoris/big dog is a remake of the first Witcher, that is fantastic. The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf  was a console port of the Witcher 1 that was to release in PS3 and Xbox 360 but was cancelled. The next decade will be interesting.

Makes sense, it’s a giant RED star, and Witcher 3, a part of the Witcher series, is the game that catapulted them to stardom.

Remembered watching a playthrough on YouTube on the Witcher 1 and having played The Witcher 3 a few years later, the difference in overall quality is huge. This game definitely needs a remake and one that I’ll definitely be picking up. ?

Not a huge fan of the Witcher series. I liked the first game when it released and remaking it makes more sense to me than remaking Dead Space (which I love) or TLOU (which I also love, but I'm incredibly sick of). Still, my first reaction to this was a laugh. Another remake/remaster/director's cut... 

It may be good, might even play it, but that's not the point.
