RPG Mania 2023 - The Octo-Path to Redemption

Do you like games where you follow a strangely effeminate man through a journey of intrigue and betrayal?

Do you enjoy grinding battles against masses of monsters to gain that one item you need to make an unbreakable scarf?

Do you find yourself drawn to games that challenge the very limits of time and space?

If you think I am describing the RPG genre, you would be right and if you enjoy these games, this event might be right for you.

This is a laid back event where everyone plays for fun and competes against each other only for the pride of playing RPG's and showing off your own prowess.

If you would like to join, signups will begin from posting of this thread until the event starts on April 1st at 12am UTC.

So there has to be some requirements right, so here is what direction I am leaning in.

Spoiler

1) Please have at least 6 months forum experience on the current profile you are using. I say this because this is a year long event and having someone drop out because the they get deterred with their account and having to readjust afterwards is not something that I want to deal with. If you are competing, please also be sure you want to commit.

2) To determine what games qualify, it should specify RPG on this site under Genre on this site. There will be instances where some games will have RPG as a genre but have no RPG elements or even actually be an RPG. In this instance, check on the thread or use one of these three websites to compare between to come to a consensus (PlaystationTrophies.org, PSNProfiles and TrueTrophies).

3) For a game to count, the Platinum trophy needs to be achieved. For individual DLC in RPG games, they will score points individually when completed and 100% games that might not have a Platinum (because they need love too) will score a little differently but still count (more on scoring later).

4) The scoring system will not be too complicated, because Maths is hard. Points are awarded for completing the games and modifiers will be added to increase or decrease the score based on difficulty, length of time, amount to be completed and infamy.

5) I am the final decision maker for any disputes or questions, but I am not a tyrant. There are people who will know more about RPG’s than I do, and in these instances I will trust the judgement of the many or of the well informed.

6) Enjoy the games, challenge each other, give each other pointers.

If you have any other suggestions or questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Scoring

Spoiler

Platinum scoring would have a base of 100, adding trophies earned during competition, minusing Platinum rarity% and minusing any points based on percentage of the game already completed before the event begins.

0-10%: -0 points

11-35%: -10 points

36-60% -15 points

61-80% -20 points

81% +   -25 points

Bronze = 1pt
Silver = 2pts
Gold = 6pts

Example: Disgaea 6 Complete100 (base score) + (3xG, 9xS, 19xB) = 55 (trophy points) - 28.41 (platinum rarity) - 10 (14% completion before event) = 116.59 points scored.

Non Plat scoring base of 75 + trophies earned during competition - rarest trophy % - points deduction per percentage completed.

Example: Caravan Stories: 75 (base score) + (2xG, 3xS, 3xB) = 21 (trophy points) - 2.12  (rarest trophy %) - 0 (0% starting percentage) = 93.88 points scored.

DLC will be counted separately from the main game. Each DLC will be counted per trophy that has been earned after the event starts, with each trophy having a flat score per type of trophy.
Trophies are worth the same points as above.

Bonuses:

Double Point Game - You can nominate two games that are worth 2x the regular points score. They cannot be a Most Wanted game and they cannot stack bonuses with the seasonal multiplier. These games can be amended once during the competition.

Triple Point Game - You can nominate one game that is worth 3x the regular points score. They cannot be a Most Wanted game and they cannot stack bonuses with the seasonal multiplier. This game can be amended once in the competition.

Most Wanted - There is a list of the most notorious RPG’s around and I’m calling on YOU to help me tame them and lock them up in the vault for good. These games will require lots of effort and time to complete and you should be rewarded for completing these. Each game on this list has a 5x bonus for beating it into submission.

Series Stacker - A points bonus for games in a series with more than 3 games. Each game completed in the series is worth an increasing amount of points but must still be classed as an RPG.

Example:
Kingdom Hearts 1: No bonus
Kingdom Hearts 2: 25 point bonus
Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories: 50 point bonus
Kingdom Hearts BBS: 75 point bonus

Kingdom Hearts 3 100 point bonus
Etc until there are no games left that count as RPG’s in that series.

New Game - A 50 point bonus is rewarded for any game beaten within 30 days of being released.

Speed Run - A bonus of 50 points for completing a game within the top 10% of completed players. If there are less than 200 completions of the game in question, for the point bonus to be added, the time must be in the top 25 completions.

Call Out - A competitor can choose any game from your backlog to complete. This bonus will be 3x the regular points scored. You may only call out one other person who is competing and only call out games that can be seen on their backlog.

Seasonal Stacker - Every month, there will be a theme or a seasonal bonus that can be applied to the scoring. This will be similar to the Series Stacker in that for every game that is completed with the theme, a bonus of 50 points will be awarded. For every game after that which fits the theme, an increase of 25 points will be added to a maximum of 125pts. A maximum of 4 games per month can be used for the Seasonal Stacker.

Other Score FAQ’s

Spoiler

You cannot receive a negative score.  If for some reason your subtractions would make you go below 0, that is where you would stop.

There is no stacking in the event. Remasters and games with similar naming conventions (eg. Soul Sacrifice and Soul Sacrifice Delta) which share the same base game with no real difference in gameplay or content, only one can be considered for points.

Autopopping games will also score no points.

Seasonal Stacker - April: Rebirth

                             - May: Traditional Dancing

                             - June: Racquet Sports

                             - July: Unexpected Vacation Spots

                             - August: Festivals

                             - September: Fun School Activities

                                   - October: Pumpkins!

This is a fun one, hope everybody has a good time!  I'd join but knowing me I'd probably end up dropping mid way through again.

Looking forward to see what sort of high scores the FF Pixel Collection brings about with the series stacking bonus points.

I'll join so no one feels bad about getting last. :P Though, I have 2 plats earned this year and both are RPGs...

Will you be keeping score for everyone after we post a completion here or do we do the Calc ourselves and you just eyeball it?

Also, if we declare a game double points (we get 2) do those games apply to everyone who completes said game or just me?

Yep, I'd say that's MORE than six months on the forum. ^_^

I wouldn't worry too much about that. All the games I have my rucksack qualify as RPGs. :P

Not a problem, these are all games I intend to conquer this year.

Don't worry, I'm an expert at Maths, so if you need any help, I'll be there to help! ;) (I got bored by algebra in high school because I knew all the theories before anyone else, that's my cred. xD)

Hey, I won't be rocking the boat here. I'll be polite if I know something you don't about a particular game.

That's why I am joining this event. :D

I really enjoy how the banner has Nintendo RPGs in them(Octopath Traveller and two Pokemon references :D).

Unfortunately, Wild ARMS is not joining the event because that was my last RPG I platinumed(the PS4 version, I did the PS5 one months ago) but I have a few big fishes to catch, so sign me down for this event and I will get my list sorted. ^_^

I keep a spreadsheet to track the completions that are posted here.

The Double and Triple points games are yours alone, you get to pick which games you feel most excited about, most interested in or want to get off your backlog. The decision is all yours!

Guided Fate Paradox

Oooooooh, I remember that ? game, all of the insane ?it gave me, and the complicated piles of ? and ????!!!!

Mini-Me: "Are you all right?" :(

Yeah, I'm fine. Is something wrong?

Mini-Me: "No, no... just... are you okay?" :(

(Re-enactment of Jhobz cussing out Dark Souls 3 when KungFuFruitcup showed a picture of the cathedral during a guessing game back in SGDQ 20019.) xD

But seriously, if anyone wants to suplex that roguelike from Nippon Ichi(all I played was the first dungeon and it was about a loser who won a raffle and was rewarded by becoming God and answering people's wishes :P), then be my guest!

As for me, I think that might renew my Square-Enix account and take the bounty for FFXIV, even if it means I will have forever incomplete in my backlog due to all of the insanely difficult savage raids I'd leave behind. I really enjoyed that MMO. I'll have to nuzlocke myself to avoid spending money on the cash shop but I'd be willing to get another Lalafell through Endwalker after Cici Arashi's tragic demise. :(

Not sure if Disgaea 4 Complete+ counts for Most Wanted, though.

Please sign me up! This is the perfect kicker to get me working through the backlog.

Question: Are The following games considered part of the same series:

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

Soul Hackers 2

Persona 3 Portable

Persona 5 Strikers

Please let me know :P

Final Fantasy XIV

You know, I really enjoyed FFXIV last year and even got a character(who has been deleted due to boredom and regret as I funded it with level skip money) past Endwalker. I'd like to redo the experience from scratch and maybe even form a free company with you once i got my Grand Company rank up. And yes, that means going back into my Square-Enix account and redownloading FFXIV's launcher. However, due to the community taking on the challenge from Yoshida not to hack by hacking, I heard that people are selling offers to plat the game for newbies with their illegal 3rd-party devices. If I do decide to restore my FFXIV account, it'll probably be this summer since I have a few games on the docket.

Since I assume Psy will be adding me, here is the list of games I have already created for the event and ones I want to contribute later this year in the order I plan to do them:

1S8ee169.png
Hogwarts Legacy: I am going on a mecca to Universal Studios Florida, spending the morning at the park absorbing the atmosphere of the recreated Hogsmeade and Diagon and the afternoon in the hotel playing this. I was going to do the trash files for the three houses, but decided that I will just go all in and start my adventure during my vacay after flying to Florida on the 20th and then finish up cleanup when I return the PS5 back home on the 24th. ;)

1S9b1ce4.png

World of Final Fantasy: Just recovered my save at Pyreglow but might start a second file from scratch since I forgotten how many chests I have opened and will probably need a checklist anyways since you have to empty every treasure chest. Since this game failed to be budged in my last Backlog participation and cost me the 100% list in Winter Backlog 2022, I'm going to make this one of my Double Point games just to have a bounty on it.

1Sb1f155.png

Disgaea 4 Complete+: Not sure if this counts as Disgaea 4 for the Most Wanted title, so I didn't make it my second Double Point game. I intend to get the platinum soon. Might just restart to follow the Green Z-Saberv Twitch of his speedrun of platinum% of this game.

1S083ec3.png

Ni No Kuni Remastered: One of the hard copies I have and while I will miss the death dupe glitch for selling tons of Sage's Secrets, I'm assured that spending time in the skeleton casino gambling on a card game isn't as bad as I thought. :P

1S18f799.png

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. The other hard copy I have. I played this for KYC2022 and want it off my backlog so this is going to be my Triple Point game. I've seen zer0skar speedrun the platinum and Order of Ambrosia categories and he put down a spreadsheet of notes for the platinum trophy% so I will be referring to that. Might restart the game as I am out of touch with my save data and would like to redo Vaan's license board but over all, wish me luck. ^_^

1S957d5f.png

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix:This game was going to be my vacay game because my initial plan was to spend the mornings at Disneyworld. However, Disney Co. are greedy landsharks and after hearing that it costs $10,000 to have a hotel there, we changed the plans to Universal insted. :( Because Disney are greedy bastards, this game goes on the sh** list as my second Double Point game. Also, because the game has six superbosses that could one-shot me and I have to complete Proud Mode anyways, this deserves to have a bounty.

1S22745e.png
Kingdom Hearts RE:Chain of Memories: I got the plat in this on an alternate account. I can do this. Also, card battling isn't just for 10,000 year old Pharoah ghosts. xD

1S732db0.png
Dragon Quest XI S: I love Dragon Quest, and yet I have no mainline DQ to show for it. That changes this year. No questions allowed. I'll earn all of the trophies on 2D Mode if I have to, even though people say 3D is better. (I completed this game's story on the Switch in 2D and enjoyed it.)

And here are all the games I haven't even touched yet outside of Hogwarts Legacy which I promised to play and backed out on:

1Sf0c83b.png

Rogue Galaxy: AKA Dark Cloud 3. I actually completed this game a long time ago and enjoyed it despite having to switch guns when I had to fight an enemy with an energy barrier, a common occurrence in the final dungeon. :(

1S62be61.png1Sb4c851.png1Sa7d0c1.png

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD

Kingdom Hearts III

I intend to hit every KH game I can... except KHII. I love KHII and would love to hack the game into my computer to join SpikeVegeta in the KH2 Randomizers, but sadly until I can conquer Yozora, I am not even confident I can handle KH2 Critical Mode. (I did get to Roxas in that mode but rage quit because I didn't realize that I needed to slam Reflect magic the instance he shouts his attack to deflect that one-hit-kill he starts with. :()

Finally, some games I want to touch on in the future...

1S3d12b8.png1S1618a6.png

Persona 3 Portable

Persona 4 Golden

I'm done a lot of P4G in older accounts on the Vita, but Risette always scared me away. Now that the Vita store is pretty much doomed, the only digitals I have left on my Vita are P4G and Minecraft, and I bought them just in time. Now with P3P and P4G on the PS4(yeah, that's a lot of acronyms xD) I am hoping to jump back in and try to have these classics join my two stacks of P5R. ;)

1S771e39.png1Sdd4e85.png

Wild ARMS 2

Wild ARMS 3

I want to try these games now that I platinumed the first. However, since they don't have exploits, it will take me a while to warn up to them even though WA3 had been on PSN since PSN existed as it was introduced with Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 as a PS2 classic.

are the last 3 assassins creed games origins odyssey and Valhalla also rpg with the lvling up system ?

Check their genre in their pages. If they have RPG in their genre tags, they are, but I think these are more adventure games.
