Popular Post patrickogorman19
Triple A games has been going on downward slope in quality this year. 2019 is worst probably one of the worst years in gaming history seriously there hasn't been great games unlike last year you had a few decent games like GoW,RDR 2 and Spiderman. More games this year seam to be getting terrible reviews. Will games improve in the next 5 years because the way we this industry is heading games will be more broken than ever.

Popular Post DrBloodmoney
It’s peaks and troughs as always. 2017 was one of the greatest years for big games ever, rivaling 1998, so I can’t personally subscribe to the idea that it is a downward slope, I think there are just some years where more comes together than others. Pessimism always feels easier to find than optimism, but optimism is far more often proven right in hindsight. plus, the year isn’t over yet
Popular Post mitch2161998
Next year should be good, Cyberpunk, watchdogs legion, Vampire: the masquerade, Doom, Pshyconauts 2, new oddworld, wasteland 3, dying light 2, the friggin last of us 2 and the marvels game which could suck but I think that's an insanely good line up, then you got the ps5 at the end of next year so assume that should revive the dev cycle. But yea this year hasn't had many standouts.
AK-1138
If those games only qualify as "decent" your standards seem unreasonably high. Some four-five games a year that stand the test of time as classics has, unfortunately, become the norm since approximately 2007. This year has just had more high-profile failures than usual, is all.
Popular Post Fr_0zt
A plague tale: Innocence Control Remnant: From the ashes Days Gone Metro Exodus Sniper Elite V2 remaster Death Stranding, SW: JFO (maybe), Afterparty, Medievil, etc coming soon this year and still have to get KH3 and BL3 (maybe). There were also many other great releases this year, so nope, gaming is still pretty good to me. All you have to do is stay away from the evil 7 (EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Activision/ Blizzard, Take2, Konami and Epic) + and you'll be fine.
Popular Post Arcesius
Looking only at AAA games is quite the narrow view. As long as there are still developers like Supergiant Games or Team Cherry, we will keep getting amazing games. It's up to you as the consumer to decide where to put your money and which companies or studios you want to support. Personally, I look at my backlog and some upcoming games I'm interested in (for example Eitr or Elden Ring) and don't worry even a little bit.

It'd be great to do an actual comparison, even if it'll always it'll always be completely subjective based on personal preferences.
Popular Post RevengeancePrime
What are you on about? There have been several amazing games that have released this year that are just as good if not better than the ones you listed. Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 2, Sekiro and Days Gone to name a few. We've also got Outer Worlds and Death Stranding releasing soon and they're both shaping up to be some great experiences. The only games that are complete garbage are generally the ones being published under the usual suspects like EA, Activision and Ubisoft.
DEI2EK
idk if every game from here on was a total flop i'd still have enough games on my shelf to last me probably the rest of my life Not all AAA games are bad, but try and branch your tastes out a bit OP and look at smaller games as well
Popular Post Dauersack
It will continue to go downhill as long as people still buy games from absolute shit companies like EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, Capcom, 2K games, Konami, Gearbox(those were just the worst I could think of right away) and worst of all Bethesda. They do what they do because it works, they can deliver half assed broken products and cramp them chock full with microtransactions to get that sweet whale and spoiled kid money boosting up their revenue by a hell of a lot because they don't lose anything of value by doing so, most people still buy their shit even if they wait a few weeks doing it. They get the best of all worlds, they can throw products out faster, cheaper, they have nearly the same customers and they can make many of these customers pay to deal with many of the roadblocks they themselve implemented, selling timesavers or quality of life improvements for horrendous prices on top of skins and progression, not even mentioning so many pre order and collectors editions you need a spreadsheet to even understand what you are dealing with there, sometimes even adding additional paid dlc that is not included in the games freaking season pass. Bethesda even wants to sell premium subscriptions for the most bashed disaster game in living memory now, so severe is their lack of respect for the dumb sheep that are still their customers, and I hope they shit on them even more because the people still playing Bethesda games really deserve it at this point. The online outrage will not chance anything, they probably consider it good PR at this point and dry their tears with money bills because most of the people complaining about their newest disaster actually bought the game day 1 and will buy the next game day 1 as well. Only way things change is by seriously reducing the sales numbers for these companies, either not getting their games at all or when the itch really needs to get scratched then buying it physical used from another gamer who just wants to get rid of the shitty thing already, and then not paying for anything the game offers ever. The way I see it, companies are currently testing how freaking low their effort can be before they actually notice any downside of shitting on their customers, they wanna maximize their profit and sadly for us the customers of today are setting the bar so embarrassingly low that I expect the downwards spiral to continue for at least 2 more years before we hit true rock bottom. Actually there might be another way things change radically, if government get involved and regulate this completely out of control monetizing bullshit, especially lootboxes. I am never a fan of governments meddling in such affairs to be honest, but if this shit gets any worse I honestly hope the government goes in and takes these companies asses dry because many of them do not even pay taxes anyway, yet still claim they need additional monetization to survive, as if that wasn't proven to be total bullshit several times in the past.
firemannxxcd
Gaming has no future there are games like Fortnite which are the wrong role models to the great firms.Everyone copies the things and that is why the future games will mostly be bad. I hope the trend Battle Royale will end soon because, it is only a huge cashgrab.

Even just this year you missed a bunch of good games. Also I reccomend trying out some indies Remnant from the ashes and Risk of rain 2 are a lot more fun than most AAA games I have played recently. Of course they're not going to be as recognized by the casual audience over games like FIFA and CoD, but they're not some niche titles that are only selling a small number of units. FIFA and CoD selling well every year doesn't come as a surprise to me. Casual audiences will eat up whatever these franchises spit out every year. I don't blame Activision, EA or any of these other companies for trying to implement microtransactions or cut corners when there are a bunch of players that are willing to support them or forgive them for whatever they say and do. I would say that's what makes the future of gaming seem bleak in addition to the PC culture that's been invading Western games in particular.
dannyswfc9
People probs thought same near end of the ps3 cycle. A new generation of gaming is on its way and they will beable to do alot more with games. Hopefully alot less broken games on release. Judge it in a few years when ps5 is totally up and running. Popular Post Helyx
Remember guys, you have the option to speak with your wallets. If you don't pre-order games, purchase tacked-on DLCs and gobble up micro-transactions, we may get better games.

Popular Post YTPerfectParadox
While i agree in principle i think it's worth noting that the quality of reviews have been in a big spiral too so if you're skipping games that don't review well you're probably missing out on some classics.
Gommes_
I kinda like that the games industry is turning into crap. Let's be real, every gamer has a backlog which provides him/her with thousands of hours of gameplay. You also don't feel the need to play new stuff anymore and you are not afraid of missing out new things if almost every new game is bad. Let's have another game crash, focus on what's really important and we will be fine. Furthermore Nintendo and Sony are still great companies who release fantastic games. So only focussing on them and some other small companies should be okay. And if you have played almost every game buy old consoles. What I find pretty sad is that the middle ground seems to be gone in terms of what kind of games come out. In the PS3 era you had games like Driver San Francisco, Enslaved, Majin and the Forsaken Kongdom, Nier, Alice Madness Returns and so on. Now it's either indie or Triple A.

ThatMuttGuy
This year has had a lot of good AAA games as well as some really bad ones (mostly EA or Ubisoft titles). 2020 is going to be amazing so I'm not sure what this thread is about. Kapika96
Your logic is flawed. Games getting worse review scores doesn't mean games are getting worse. Review scores count for... well... nothing at all actually. Actually play the games yourself and value your own opinion over the opinion of some rando that you've never met on the internet.
