Platinum Difficulty Challenge 2023

After the long wait for October my first list is completed. I finished Until Dawn this evening which gets me to Platinum Tier and 3 new badges. @Rebourne07

 

I'm not a big horror fan but it was fun revisiting Until Dawn even though I had never played it myself.

My wife is a casual gamer and we co-op some games together (which is the main reason I have so many Lego platinum trophies )

She is also a massive slasher movie fan so I bought her Until Dawn when it released as a present and said we had a new game to play. but she was going to play and I was just going to watch.

Being a little slow with QTEs meant a no death scenario for her was out of the question. But no one watches slasher movie to see everyone survive so her inability to save everyone was actually perfect.

@Rebourne07 I have a question regarding Metagame as a rating source. Sometimes there are two ratings for the same game.

 

For example: Xeno Crisis has a "Game Difficulty" of 10/10, and a "Trophy Difficulty" of 9/10. Can we use either rating?

As of a couple hours ago, I recently completed GTA 4's base game!


Very lucky that there's a guide that rates it a 10/10 from all those years ago! 😂 I've got to give my thanks to @PlutoRico and @YaManSmevz for helping me with the online! The multiplayer trophies were the one thing stopping me from playing this game for a long time since I always feared a hacker ruining things, so I was very fortunate to have these two trustworthy friends to play with, and it made the entire process more fun!... Except those races for the AWP trophy, those races wear anyone down. 😅 This was my first GTA game, and it was an awesome experience! I loved the characters, roaming through the main islands, and listening to some sweet radio tunes all the while.

On another note: Overwatch 2. Since OW2 is really just a glorified update, it carries over the same trophies as OW1, and it's because of this that I noticed OW1's PlatPrices rating was listed on the original post of the thread, so I couldn't pass up the chance to include that for my 9/10.  😅 With my 8/10 and 7/10 also done, I've covered the hard games! Just got 1, 2, and 6 to go!

@Yuber6969 That is a GREAT question. Metagame is kinda the sketchiest rating source that's still allowed. I'd never even noticed there were two ratings for each game on there. Once you said that my initial reaction was to say the trophy difficulty would be the one that is accepted...but upon further inspection that'd alienate a lot of existing lists 🤣 So either rating works. Metagame goes against the standard rule of "either a published guide or a community poll" because its an aggregate algorithm that is automatically calculated based on source sites. But...to say that's not allowed would mean PlatPrices wouldn't be allowed since it does the same thing. And since PlatPrices is by far the most searchable resource...MetaGame slides by on a technicality haha In short, use whatever metagame.guide rating you'd like.

I got a couple more completions to bump me up to gold tier on my 3rd list. Rayman Origins is another one I've played before and one I knew didn't deserve its 8/10 guide difficulty. It was fun to play through it again and nothing really gave me much difficulty. Catherine was new to me and it was tough. I wasn't super good at the block puzzles, so thankfully a majority of the game can be done following video guides. I dread to think of solving all 128 Rapunzel stages on my own. Babel was pretty challenging since you're basically required to use 2 controllers on the PS3 version. I think ultimately Obelisk was the most challenging but Axis Mundi certainly seemed ridiculous on my first few tries.

 

I think after Vanquish I will probably call it quits with 3 lists completed. I would just be missing 4 unique badges, which I think is pretty good.

 Been busy with work here lately - so my time has been limited and Final Fantasy XIV - raiding the newest savage weekly re-clears (and patch) happened. 🤣 

 

I do, however, have a question about one of the games in the difficulty 9 & 10 tier list: Vanquish. Does it really deserve the 9/10 or 10/10 spot? Is this difficulty based solely on the psnprofiles (or PST) guide? The thing worth noting in Vanquish are the challenges and those challenges mainly being Challenges 4 & 6, the other 4 are simple enough, but I would not say Vanquish is a 9, let alone a 10; if anything, I would say a 7 (or 8 at best) to avoid an argument; personally, a 6 makes more sense (in my opinion) for Vanquish while MGR:R seems about right. Not sure if this has been brought up before in the past, but figured I'd ask now. While it will make no difference, just curious. In addition, one could also argue Evil Within's spot, but that is another topic for a different day. Idk - Akumu mode after completing it felt more like Trial and Error, but who knows that is based on my experience.

@x410xDragon Good points on Vanquish and Evil Within. That's the beauty of the challenge though, no one can determine their own ratings, we just accept the ratings of guide writers and community polls so if a game was considered a 10 at one point but now, due to strategies and exploits discovered afterwards, is easier...so be it. It's still a 10 for this challenge Good job on Evil Within, I think you're the first person I've heard say that wasn't as hard as they expected lol

Only one I'm iffy on is injustice due to how long it may take. But for now I'm planning on it. Thanks for the help guide

Is it possible to get Jack of All Trades and One Trick Pony on the same list? Asking because 6 of my games share the adventure genre ?

With how long it has taken me to get through this list, I got to plat Outlast 2 a few days ago which gets me the Spooky badge that I wasn't planning for when I made the list originally   I remember playing it when it first came out but I forgot how dark it is, made the chasing encounters a complete nightmare because I kept bumping into shit, made my heart race a few times lol Also got the Cuphead plat like 20 minutes ago after 3 long hours of fighting the devil, I was so ready to give up for the day, persevere and conquer I guess. That means I only have 2 more games to beat so I can finish my first (and only) list. I might actually end up swapping RDR2 for Fall Guys, I don't think I have the will or time to spend like 200 hours on RDR2 (maybe if I had started making progress earlier during the year), I only have one trophy left to get the Fall Guys plat, let's see what I decide on after I do Celeste

I have no idea how long your 4,9 and 10 games take, but Tony Hawk will take a hell of a long time. The grind to level 100 is madness.

Finally have another update to make:

 

First up, I'm swapping out my 4/10 (Two Point Hospital) for Anno 1800, which I recently published a guide for. All of the badges for Two Point Hospital are redundant with other games on the list, so nothing changes there. 

 

Next is my last game on the list: Returnal, for 9/10. Frequently very frustrating but always a lot of fun, this one was quite a mountain to climb. The collectibles grind was pretty terrible, but the gameplay being so smooth and addictive made it (mostly) bearable.

 

With that my list is complete!

I'd had some plans to maybe do a second list and get some more badges, but I got a little obsessed with that guide I wrote, and it ended up eating too much of my free time. Whoops. So.... next year, I guess.

 

Anyway, this challenge was a lot of fun! I do feel a little guilty because the "hard" half of my list is generally over-rated difficulty wise, but you take what the internet gives you. Most of the joy actually came from just scouring lists trying to find all the right numbers amongst my backlog and such, and setting it up to get as many badges as possible. On top of that I had a lot of fun writing my first guide, revisiting a favorite from my youth (FF8), trying things outside my usual gaming wheelhouse (TOEM, 13 sentinels), and finally getting around to playing a couple oldies I've been meaning to try for ages (Vanquish and Metal Wolf Chaos, both of which were great.)

 

Thanks @Rebourne07 for creating and maintaining the event, and cheers to all the other participants (some of you guys are impressively insane, lol.)

OK, I didn't think I was as close to finishing Godfall but as it turned out I was.

 

Godfall is a sort of poor mans Destiny with melee combat instead of guns. There is no PvP or Raids, which were the main things I struggled with in Destiny, so I enjoyed it.

I thought the 20 levels of the Ascended Tower solo was going to be a bit of a chore. But it wasn't as bad as expected. So, that is my 6/10 on my second list done.

Injustice is long, but there's afk for the longest trophy thankfully. Destroy all humans is like 20 hours maybe? And Celeste from what I've read is a little longer than that. If it's that bad I might just postpone it for another game.

Celeste with cheats (I used them, no shame) is very quick. Injustice platinum is less about the level 100 grind and more about Battle Mode. Good luck!

Never considered the badges before now, but the idea seems very fun! I may have to consider my next few carefully!

Trackmania is 9 or 10 depending on where you look. Came out in May.
