Popular Post wolvieware
Watched The Flash this week, and I’m not sure why it seems to have a negative reputation as I quite enjoyed it. Unlike many of the DCU movies, it actually had a decent plot I was invested in (although I’m not sure the time travel stuff truly made any sense) but even better, it had a sense of humour! Having Michael Keaton in quite a large role was a plus (he’s my favourite Batman) although other cameos as such were kinda pointless. But overall thought this was one of the few DCU movie highs.
Slava
13 hours ago, Redgrave said: Thought I would watch it since @Slava mentioned it and it was available on HBO. I thought it was good even if it's got that "movie you pass by regularly while browsing at Blockbuster" kind of quality to it. The mob characters were pretty funny especially when they are looking for Ghost Dog and they wind up at the wrong roof a couple times, and then there is also the one that likes Flava Flav. There's also a part where Ghost Dog gives the book Roshomon to a girl and while watching I was wondering why he thought it appropriate to give that to a kid but I guess the book Roshomon and the movie are different. I also couldn't help but think the movie title and the setting sounds like it would have been made into a PS2 game that would have gotten 4/10 ratings on IGN. Nice. I guess this movie can be described as a cult classic. Judging by its box office ($9 million worldwide), it wasn't very popular. So it's good that it was brought back, at least here. What's interesting, which I forgot to mention in my write-up, is that the theatre crowd was applauding when credits rolled. The only other instance of that happening that I can remember was all the way back in 2012 when I watched The Dark Knight Rises. Something about Ghost Dog resonated a lot with our locals 🙂. Popular Post Pray_4_the_End
Poor Things This movie was great, I can see why Emma Stone won an Oscar for her role. I wasn't expecting it to be nearly as trippy as it was, and it's VERY trippy. Kinda wish I'd have known beforehand, I would've micro dosed some mushrooms or something and had a REAL blast watching it lol.

Obviously, the movie has a very strong feminist message but I just wasn't able to put my finger on it. Like, what are the makers of the movie trying to say? Women are free to make terrible, dangerous, life threatening choices? Well, sure, they are, but unlike in the movie where it all works out for her in the end, in real life there are consequences. Pretty weird way to show emancipation of women, tbh.

TheDarkKratos
The Flash (2023) For me the best part by far was seeing Michael Keaton reprise his role as Batman for the last time.

The OST is made up of basically all dissonant chord progressions and it sounded pretty haunting, yet intriguing. I dug that a lot, and of course the visuals for the movie are like a long acid/mushroom trip and it threw me off guard in a good way. Other than than that I just assumed it was a Frankenstein inspired trippy movie.
Popular Post HellcoreFire
Inhuman Kiss. A Thai supernatural movie about a krasue. Some scenes (the kissing scene especially) could have been a bit shorter but all in all it was pretty good. Always nice to learn some folklore from other cultures too.

Popular Post POEman553
Few more since Sunday: Jackie Brown (leaving Netflix at the end of the month) - One of the more story driven Quentin Tarantino movies that doesn't go over the top with 'shocking' material and told a competently well done story while keeping Tarantino's worst impulses in check. Amsterdam (leaving Max on March 19) - Beautifully shot and at times competently directed but such a waste of time for everyone involved. Spoiler The movie spends much of its time making a mockery of war wounds and play it up as a farce rather than focusing on the central plot about the committee to install a general as president. If you don't like Taylor Swift (somehow), you'll be happy to see her get killed in the first 20 minutes. The setup of the movie would lead you to believe that everyone would potentially be out to get the three main characters but undoes that half way through the movie. Late August, Early September (leaving Max at the end of the month) - Deadly boring at times and an hour and half movie that feels longer. How these people in this movie all aren't dead I don't know. Anne (Virginie Ledoyen) is allergic to paying bills apparently while looking hot and Gabriel (Mathieu Amatric) can't decide if he wants her or not. Dude is moody as hell and probably needs to have someone shake him. Spoiler Then he tries to convince himself that Adrien (Francois Cluzet) is a great writer and great person to be around, while he is insufferable and is fine with dating a 15 or 16 year old girl (Mia Hansen-Love). Why none of Adrien's friends were like "Bro, dating a 15 or 16 year old girl could get your ass to jail or get you killed by her parents" or got him on a watch list, I don't know. If he's courting a 15 or 16 year old girl, you better hope moody writer guy isn't trying to go after girls younger than that. Instead, writer douchebag dies and people are upset about it and talk in vague generalities about their feelings or why they are leaving this person without their being actual emotional investment involved. The film manages to reach a destination without really leaving. Their time and your time are wasted. Then the ending has Gabriel eying the 15 or 16 year old girl walking out of a restaurant while talking to a woman about an actual fucking job. Which most people in this movie seem allergic to having too. My reaction was "Oh, don't tell me you want to hook up with that girl too?" The Promise (Max, leaving at the end of the month) - Great movie with great acting and superb location shots. Shame it didn't make more money at the box office. If it came out 10 years earlier, it would have made gangbusters. It belongs in the same class of historical 2000's era big budget movies like Troy and Gladiator. Movie is a bit long, but nothing is ever boring in this movie and it holds a person's interest throughout. If there weren't a love triangle story, it would have been 10x times better. The Naked Kiss (Max, leaving at the end of the month) - Introductory credits and opening of the movie are incredible. The setting for the movie is quite ahead of its time in the '60s. Creepy song half way through the movie too. Constance Towers is a great actress and rises above the pulpy material. Brian And Charles (Peacock, leaving at the end of the month) - Rather short movie but beautifully done with Welsh landscapes and houses. Humor is a bit dry. It was described in a review online as being like "The Office but for introverted depressives." Xanadu (Criterion Channel, leaving at the end of the month) - Either the greatest musical movie ever or the worst. There is no in-between. Spoiler First off, the movie makes zero sense. It's not supposed to. Michael Beck is a bit of an ass. That's fine. The scene transitions are annoying and feel like they were done on Final Cut Pro. The story, if you think about it, doesn't hold up. Questions like "How were Sonny and Danny supposed to make money?" Or "What happened to Sonny's boss? His co-workers?" None of that matters. It's the overall composition, makeup and vibe of the movie that matter. Also, ELO/Jeff Lynne could make songs about a cake recipe and it would be the most emotional cake recipe ever. Olivia Newton John is absolutely gorgeous and could stand there and smile and I'd be okay with that. Gene Kelly was great in the movie too.

Popular Post TheDarkKratos
Thanks. I will try n remember that thread next time. Just watched Roadhouse (2024) exclusive to Prime Video. As I expected it was pretty mediocre compared to the original. The 1989 version was better, more fun, exciting, and memorable, and I have seen it a few times over the years. Still enjoy it. Remake is meh. I think it got a 3/10 overall. And it's well deserved. Jake Gylenhaal's character is flat and uninteresting. The writers of this film have no clue. And it shows. The fights were boring. The acting was average. Overall, it was just forgettable. But I kept my hopes high, seeing as I like the Patrick Swayze version. It just goes to show you that modern remakes can suck. I won't be viewing this movie again. The only reason it went to number 4 upon its release is because it's new. Not cuz it's good. Popular Post ChilledBrandon
Femme (2023) This had me captivated right from the start. Incredible performances from Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay. I was so impressed by their acting in this. They both play really challenging roles and just knocked it out of the park completely. The story and characters were so well-written and it really keeps you gripped from the start. It's a very tense watch overall.
Popular Post POEman553
Since Wednesday: Snowpiercer (Peacock, leaving at the end of the month) - Very different movie with Chris Evans and....he can actually act? And he's not acting like Captain America throughout? At times, it was "Hunger Games on a train," but a lot more grime than that. Spoiler The ending was not what I expected with Curtis and Walston both being dead. Snack Shack - Just saw this in the theaters. Charming John Hughes-eque movie in a post-American Pie world. The movie says both main characters are 14 but they act like juniors in high school. Spoiler The movie goes hard at the end. Worth checking out. Belle (2013) (leaving Hulu at the end of the month) - Great movie and loved the story behind it based on a woman in a painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle. I will definitely seek out more movies from Amma Asante. She is definitely a great director. The Favourite (leaving Hulu at the end of the month) - After watching Poor Things, The Favourite is a parallel companion piece in a lot of ways. It used some of the same shots and ideas for its story - 'fish's eye' lens in a few of the scenes, debauchery everywhere, and sending up of societal norms. The story for both are vastly different though with the relationships involved. Emma Stone is completely amazing as is Olivia Colman as Queen Anne and Rachel Weisz as Sarah Churchill. Nightmare Alley (2021) (Leaving Hulu at the end of the month) - Not the original 1947 version, but the Guillermo Del Toro remake. A bit long tbh. Spoiler The first hour of the movie was great and lead you to believe that the movie would be about the cast of characters with Bradley Cooper trying to figure out his place with them. Instead, the movie is about Cooper's character Stanton Carlisle doing a 'big score' to pull over a judge and an industrialist. The ending was fatalistic but the best ending possible. Revolutionary Road (Leaving Max at the end of the month) - It wasn't too bad. I haven't seen Titanic so I'm not familiar with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio together in that movie. Michael Shannon was the best part of the movie as were Kathryn Hahn and David Harbour. David Harbour literally looked like Michael Shannon at first. Spoiler Most of the movie consists of Frank Wheeler (DiCapiro) and April Wheeler (Winslet) yelling at each other or about to yell at each other while they talk about moving to Paris. Everything around April's abortion is a bit anachronistic given the time. Ismael's Ghosts (Leaving Max at the end of the month) - Rather long movie from Arnaud Desplechin starring Mathieu Amalric, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Best way to describe it is as a French version of Adaptation. Spoiler At times, the movie didn't make sense even with the 'film within a film' motif that was going on. Interesting to watch this movie with having watched Late August, Early September. It does a similar 'story told out of order' but was easier to watch in comparison. Jennifer's Body (Max, leaving at the end of the month) - Darkly funny horror movie with Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. Megan Fox did this while being in between Transformers movie. People hated it, but I found it pretty good. Late Night With The Devil - Just got back from the theaters. GO SEE THIS NOW. It'll be on Shudder next month.
Popular Post Juzota
Inglourious Basterds - Masterpiece The Land of Happiness - Reminds me of summer 12 Angry Men - This movie has been on my to-do list for a long time, did not disappoint Django Unchained - Not gonna lie, I kinda wanna replay RDR2 now for some reason

Popular Post Redgrave
It was an A24 kind of weekend. I will start with A Ghost Story which I remember reading was scary but thinking back it may have been a joke that went over my head. I like the idea of it where it's about a guy that dies and so he winds up becoming a stereotypical ghost that's just a sheet with eyes cut out. However I feel like this was something that was more of a 30 minute indie project kind of thing that got extended to over an hour because there are a lot of scenes that linger for what feels like ages. The most questionable one where the ghost's wife is eating pie for five minutes. I mean, I get that it's supposed to show her grieving but I don't think we needed to see her eat pie for that long. If I want to watch characters eat I will just watch The Sopranos because they at least say funny things while eating. I did like some of the sequences though, like where the ghost is skipping into the future and eventually sees a futuristic city where his house was and then goes back in time to the old West. I also like that it at least has something that I assume was a happy ending. I just think I would have liked it more if it was shorter. High Life is another film from A24 where Robert Pattinson is isolated somewhere, except instead of a lighthouse with Willem Dafoe it's a space ship with his daughter. I can only imagine how insane it could have gotten if Willem Dafoe were there and they both have to take care of an infant with no outside communication. Without saying too much it does pretty well starting off seemingly normal but each twist reveals a more messed up backstory to the whole thing and you find out why Robert Pattinson and his daughter are the only ones on the ship. I feel like the story was darker and more depressing than A Ghost Story though, especially with one implication near the end where they come across another ship with nothing but dogs on it. Of the three, I liked The Ballad of Lefty Brown the most since it's just a simple western and I think Bill Pullman did great playing the Lefty Brown character and how he was a friendly lawman kind of character even during really dire situations. Like mentioned it's a western but it has a murder mystery angle to it since Lefty Brown tries to solve who murdered his partner and along the way he partners up with a kid that thinks he's tough and they have a good dynamic. Normally I don't make a deal of it but I saw that this had a budget of about $8 million and only made over $7,000 at the box office which is kind of sad to see since I thought it was good and it feels like it's underappreciated. I guess the other thing is that A24 movies at least at the time it was made weren't super huge hits either.
wolvieware
Watched a couple of movies this week: Irish Wish - Rom com with dubious morals. Not a whole lot to recommend this one. Dull plot, not remotely funny, nonsense fluff. It had some nice Irish scenery I guess. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - The most recent Turtles movie I think, and while not a bad film it wasn’t for me…it made me feel old! It was clearly aimed at a teenage crowd with its dialogue, references and attitude so really not my demographic. The animation was kinda weird as well, it could be stunning looking in places but then oddly crap in others.
