Civil War

 

 

Civil War is neither another "War is bad" movie nor an exploration of American politics. It's closer to Nightcrawler. It's about being good at taking a picture of the most fucked up thing. The difference is that the photograper in this movie is not a psycho, and gets traumatized and desensitized throughout the story.

 

The movie says pretty much nothing about the sourse of the conflict (to the point of making me think that the title is kind of misleading), but that's not something I was thinking about after the credits rolled. It made me think about people behind the camera - the war correspondence. Risking your life and trying to make people care only to hear "It's happening over there, it's none of my business" is not a new idea, sure. But it's very relevant, and personally resonates with me. Knowing that one of your neighbours died in an ongoing war, then seeing someone you know post "The last two years have been great, just ignore and abstract" online is frustrating. The moments in Civil War where you hear funky music after a horrific scene try to bring out the same frustration, similar to "This is America" MV. There's lots more to think about, especially the ending, but that's what stuck out to me.

 

The movie is not easy to watch. Some parts are more quiet and nerve-racking (reminded me of Nocturnal Animals), other parts are loud and exhilirating (this is not the kind of movie where you would be able to hear characters talk over gunfire and helicopter sounds). I think I'm desensitized to on-screen violence, yet Civil War managed to stress me out.

There are some things I wasn't a fan of. One scene, I thought, didn't fit in terms of its tone. There was also a part that was missing - a plot point gets introduced and resolved off-screen. The sequence at the tail end was not very believable to me. Although, at the same time, who knows how things would go in that scenario.

 

Overall, I think it's great. Go watch it, and ingnore the "It doesn't talk about politics, so it's bad" BS.

Disappointed with GxK. The writing has always sucked across all Monsterverse movies, but I usually enjoy the Kaiju action. This time around, though, not only did the movie cut away from half the fights, but even the third-act beatdown was very uninteresting. GvK was camp but fun, but Wingard went too far with this one, it's just a dumb cartoon now.

 

Kong channeling Kratos saved it for me. Also loved his "too old for this sh*t" energy.

Technically it would be Yukio Mishima's Patriotism, but as that one is only half an hour, the last feature length film I saw was Dune Part 2.

It's Spirited Away so I don't think it really needs much introduction and I don't think there's anything new I could say that hasn't already been said about it. I haven't watched this since around the time it came out but it's something I put in the timeless category and is something that you can appreciate better when you're older. The animation is great especially during the train ride part where I feel like it's the most beautiful part for me. Ghibli could just make a movie where it's two hours of scenic views with nice music playing and I would watch it in theaters.

 

Along with that the characters are all nice and memorable. I'm surprised I remembered most of them apart from a couple after all this time but I like Kamaji because he looks like Dr. Robotnik if he were skinny and had multiple arms along with being a nice grandfather kind of character by the end. And of course there's No Face who I remembered liking back when it came out too since I thought his design was cool but seeing him again I like that the idea about his character is that he comes off as bad but he just doesn't know any better and so he thinks he can win people over by giving them gold. It's nice seeing him near the end when Zeniba lets him stay and help her craft stuff. Also he's even cooler now because his mask was the basis for Darth Nihilus' mask in KOTOR II.

 

 

I guess this is the new DC Animated series timeline after Apokolips War since I think this was meant to lead into that new Crisis on Infinite Earth's movie that isn't on HBO for some reason. Either way this starts off being three separate stories involving Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman in different scenarios. Wonder Woman gets an Old West kind of scenario where she looks pretty good in a Cowgirl outfit and it has Jonah Hex so I like it for those reasons. Batman gets a pretty sick Conan the Barbarian design, and Superman is in a 1950's detective sort of thing where he goes to a diner to investigate a UFO sighting. I was expecting them to drop the "among us" line at some point but it sounded like they got very close to.

 

Overall I thought it was fine even if I figured the twist pretty early on. I feel like you wouldn't know what was happening if the Warworld title didn't sound familiar but I know of it from the Justice League animated show even if it's presented a different way. I'll at least give it credit for the Cowgirl Wonder Woman and Conan Batman designs as well as having Lobo and Martian Manhunter make an appearance.

Past week watches. Watched a great indie sci-fi called Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

This film. It was alright a bit disgusting at some parts. I dont really like horror for that fact, it is mostly gore and just nasty instead of scary. Although this film was scary at sometimes. I would rate it an 7/10. If you like horror id suggest it.

Wish - the latest Disney animation was surprisingly bland. The animation was an odd cg but trying to look like it was hand drawn. The best thing about the movie, as it was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the company, trying to find Easter eggs from Disneys history throughout - much more entertaining than the film itself.

Monkey Man

 

 

Watch Monkey Man if you want to see good old revenge porn, hot Dev Patel, cool monke, and Indian spirituality and folklore. If you want martial arts, your time will be better spent elsewhere.

 

After watching this film and comparing it in my mind to John Wick, I thought about one thing. The difference between action scenes in a movie directed by a stunt man and a movie directed by an actor is very noticeable. Patel's camera spends a lot of time in close-ups capturing the feel, the emotion. While the focus on street food, tree roots, sweaty fingers, and scars fills you with the rich sense of the portrayed world, the same approach to action scenes makes you wish you could see the actual moves better (and Patel definitely got the moves). More often then not, I wanted the camera man to take a step back, go wider, and let me see the full body do the work. I got maybe 3 seconds of that throughout the movie. In comparison, John Wick is better at showing off the fight choreo, but maybe not so much the feel.

 

It's good for a directorial debut. I am glad that the film made it to the big screen. But I'm gonna go and add a couple Hong Kong action flicks to the watchlist now.

 

P.S. I never used Hanuman in SMT or Persona, maybe I should consider bringing monke into the team.

Not gonna lie, I was very excited when I found out a new Kung Fu Panda movie was going to be released, but when there was no Furious Five in the trailer I knew I was in for disappointment. I don't know, there just wasn't anything that would reel you in, Viola Davis is great but the Chameleon was very boring and bland, and in a franchise like KFP where you have some really well written villains like Tai Lung, they really missed the mark with whatever they wanted to do with Chameleon. Zhen was very [vague hand gestures], maybe that was just me, I'm not really a fan of Awkwafina. The score was pretty underwhelming as well, and when you have Hans Zimmer as your composer, that's kinda sad. Fortunately, Jack Black will always make an amazing Po. The credits song alone saved those dreading 90 minutes where I laughed like, 3 times.

Got my second Hellboy fix with these. I assume they are their own thing that were used to promote the movies since I don't think they tie into them but they are good for what they are and it probably helps they got Ron Perlman to be Hellboy again while keeping the humor from the movies. I think I liked Sword of Storms the best between the two since it dealt with Hellboy dealing with Japanese folklore stuff and it felt like a bigger adventure. Blood and Iron was good too but I think in comparison to Sword of Storms it felt more contained but I appreciate that it also felt like a classical horror concept with the vampires.

Along with that the animation was pretty good and had they made an entire show animated like this I definitely would have watched it. I also didn't pick up on it right away but the Oliver Trombolt character was voiced by Crypto from Destroy All Humans.

 

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - Chapter 1

 

I now have an excuse to talk about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure since I saw this was added as a movie you could watch for free on YouTube. If you haven't watched JoJo's Bizarre Adventure then this whole segment is going to sound like a bunch of nonsense. Anyway I already knew of the liberties they took at the end but as far as I can remember the ending is the only thing they heavily change but I'll get to that. Otherwise it's basically a condensed live action version of the beginning of Part 4 where Josuke fights Angelo and ends with the Keicho fight.

As far as the characters and their portrayals go I think the characters were portrayed as close as possible and they got the look mostly down. I suppose I can't be too picky on the looks because it would be very hard to find someone to be as wide as Jotaro and someone as short as Koichi the way they are portrayed in the manga/anime. I hope we see Shigechi in one of the sequels too just to see how weird he would look. I feel like the guy that played Koichi did really well getting his mannerisms down. The guy that played Josuke did pretty well with that character too, so really despite how live action adaptations usually go I think they did well enough with the characters personalities at least and getting the looks down.

One thing that I feel like they did add was Angelo and Keicho interacting with each other more. There is a scene where they are talking with each other in a restaurant which I don't remember happening but it has been a while since I have seen Part 4. Along with that, the Stands looked good with what they did show of them at least in regards to Star Platinum, Crazy Diamond, and The Hand. The way they moved and punched looked fluid.

However, I must say that in terms of sound design they should have taken cues from the anime. Star Platinum or Crazy Diamond's punches don't sound like rifles going off when they connect with something for one thing. Perhaps the biggest error of all was not having Jotaro yell out "STAR PLATINUM: ZA WARUDO!" followed by a dubstep clock sound. Instead it doesn't make any noise at all but I appreciate that they at least do the color effect of time being stopped. Also, Okayasu's The Hand doesn't make the "BMMMMM" sound when he swipes.

 

Now for the ending of which they took the most liberties with.

I assume this is because it's a live action adaptation with a budget but it seems like they are going to cut out quite a bit. In particular they show Sheer Heart Attack kill Keicho at the end instead of Red Hot Chili Pepper which implies Kira is covering his tracks even though at this point in the story he shouldn't even be aware of other Stand users.

 

This also probably means we won't get to see Red Hot Chili Pepper along with Akira Otoishi's sick guitar solo along with the other Stand users that are around Morioh.

Either way though I would like to see the second part of this should they ever get around to making it. I mostly just want to see how Yoshikage Kira is portrayed and seeing Killer Queen in CG. That and it would give me something else related to JJBA until Steel Ball Run gets animated depending on which one comes first. I also wonder if they will even include Rohan Kishibe and I would love it if they included Antonio's restaurant.

But if there is one thing that this movie did wrong, it's that they didn't have the Morioh Cho Radio jingle at any point. So upon further reflection this actually makes this movie TERRIBLE! But if they will make a sequel perhaps they can remedy this by adding it in during the appropriate parts.
